Keep the supplemental pick. Go with Gattis and Francisco. We keep hearing about replacing Bourn, but from the beginning of July through the end of the season, he hit .234, .340, .328, – Really not all that impressive and they aren’t going to move Upton to LF.

Statistics cannot fully predict any particular year a player can have, only what they might have in the light of past performance.

Baseball is about probabilities and likelihoods, and some folks here tend to forget that, Gary. I like to remind them, sometimes. :-)

If the Braves are willing to lose that draft pick in the compensation round and Bourn is willing to agree to a one-year deal between $7 and $10 million,

This can’t be correct. Losing a draft pick for re-signing your own free agent player would make the union go pitchfork-and-torches.

From what I [DOB] gather, the Braves would be fairly comfortable going into the season with Martin Prado splitting time with Reed Johnson in left field and splitting time with Francisco at third base, and saving the extra funds for a big in-season trade or two as needs arise.

Actually, not a bad approach, if circumstances dictate.

If the Braves don’t add another bat and they go into 2013 with a platoon how can anyone say this team will be anywhere close to the 2012 team. Lets say that Upton replacing Bourne is an even swap which I’m not sure it is we are replacing a hall of famer with a platoon of Francisco and Johnson???? And let’s not forget losing the best backup catcher in the majors for who???? What a joke so much for not shopping at Walmart.

“Bourn is willing to agree to a one-year deal between $7 and $10 million”

No point in even reading past that line.

Totally agree. He turned down one year, $13.3 million, but now is going to sign for less than $10 because “he made close to $7 million last year”?

He made close to $7 million last year because he had to go through arbitration and hadn’t hit free agency. Arbitration artificially keeps player salaries lower than they would be on the open market. Had he been a free agent last year, he would have made close to twice that amount on an annual salary (maybe more).

There may be a scenario in which Bourn would return to Atlanta in 2013. But if such a scenario exists (which I doubt), it involves either a LOT of deferred money, or the Braves moving some salary to free up more money to pay Bourn. $10 million doesn’t come close to getting it done.

You aren’t replacing a HOF performance from the HOFer. He hasn’t put up a HOF performance since 2008. You’re replacing a team icon who will be in the HOF in five years and who had not been all he was for quite some time. And as for replacing him – we replaced him for fifty games last year.

Murph

Bourn isn’t signing for much less than what BJ signed for. Makes no sense for him to do so, especially on a short-term deal where his age isn’t really a factor.

I can see him signing for less on a long-term deal due to the fact that his legs won’t be what they are now in 5 years… but the Braves wouldn’t do that.

Zero chance he comes back to Atlanta. On par with the Braves trading for Stanton. Ain’t gonna happen.

Disgusted: You miss the whole point of enjoying music and that is finding the good songs that were not hits or never got radio play. I have 1000’s of albums going back to the 50’s and before, and many of them are by artists most have never heard of or were not hits. And many of those are among the best songs and artists in my collection, but they weren’t stars or hits…and the cool thing is YOU know it was a great song, album, or artist before anyone else does.
Go to You Tube and listen to “Stone Cold Sober” by Crawler from 1977 or ‘78, it should have been a massive top 40 and FM hit, it has everything you want in a 70’s Classic Rock song…but for some unknown reason, is didn’t make it and the band broke up because they knew they had a killer song, and couldn’t make it a hit.
It’s the exact same principle as drafting and trading for baseball players. some will be stars and some will be bumbs, ie: Hayward and Schafer. Except a great song will always be a great song, you just have to find it, and thats the fun of it all. And don’t depend on a radio person to tell you what music you are supposed to like…they are influenced by all kinds of pressure from all sides to only pick certain songs. They have a lot in common with a baseball team front office and look how many draft choices make the show? Not too many and not too many of those that do are really good…same with picking hit songs.
A good rule is if you hear a song or singer you like, you will prolly like other songs by that same singer, so check them out.
And that concludes today’s sermon, which in all likelihood will be my last. I plan to enjoy they rest of my last day on earth and I hope you do too.

jfp do realize how freeman, upton, mccann followed by uggla would cog the basepaths? A slow runner behind a fast runner could work,

i dont think constructing a lineup fast to slow is the right way to do it. gonna have to have fast guys behind slow guys somewhere.

nolie why would you put Upton with his crappy OBP at second ahead of Uggla who actually has a much higher one.

youre just looking at 2012. upton and uggla have pretty similar OBP for thier careers. i think they are the same type of hitters, and can be interchangeable in this lineup, honestly.

First, again, I think going with a plan of Francisco/Prado/Johnson to cover 3B and LF with Gattis lurking is completely workable, even intriguing in the sense that we get the chance to see how Francisco will do with a lot more ABs (and possibly Gattis at the majors level as well). ESPECIALLY given what’s available to the Braves in trade and at the high cost we keep hearing and the lack of a good FA fit.

Second, unless we have more than one significant injury to our starting rotation, the Braves are going to be in contention right down to the wire, and I expect them to earn the 1st WC again (finishing second to the Nationals). I just don’t think the collection of aging spare parts the Phillies are putting together is going to get it done over the long haul.

I have been. I do that to steady the nerves with regular basis. Evan has done what he has done in fewer PA, fewer seasons, etc. Scott took forever to hit the majors, which was a mark against him. It is that mark many point to when utilizing age in a discussion of Gattis. But, even still, I can’t yet shake the ghost off. He’s faint, and only Gattis mashing will completely vanquish the ghost.
I think it is largely born out of the Braves need for a LF, looking in the off-season for just about anything, while having a minor league option and potentially heading into the season with it.

December 20th, 2012
11:32 am

You know how sometimes you wake up in the morning and sticky problems you’ve been noodling over for weeks are suddenly clear? It’s one of those mornings for me.
1. There will be no more “premium” players signed or traded for this winter. Wren judged value, and then made his offers. BJ’s the only deal that worked out for him, and that’s the way it is.
2. There will be no platoon with Prado rotating between LF and 3B. Spring training will feature a competition between Gattis and Francisco for a starting job. If Gattis wins, Prado plays 3B and Juan goes to the bench. If Juan wins, then Prado plays LF and Gattis stays in the minors (for now).
3. The other featured competition will be between Delgado and Teheran. One stays, and the other goes down. At mid-year one will be traded for a more established (dare I say “premium”) starting pitcher from some team looking to shed salary. That’s where some of the money will go.
4. Schafer will make the team, but will never be considered for a starting job. He is insurance against injury to the outfield starters. Say what you want about his hitting or his personality, the dude can play defense. Pinch-run, also.
5. Uggla is going nowhere. In fact, he will have a monster year and make many of you look foolish.
6. Simmons will be given every opportunity to show he is a number 1 or 2 hitter, but it’s probably not going to happen for him this year. Don’t be surprised if he his no. 8. Prado leads off and Upton or Heyward bats no.2.

Did I miss anything?

For a leadoff hitter I like Will Venable, Padres need offense every one of their hitters are leadoff types with the exception of Headley, Alonso, and Quentin. They really don’t have quality pitching, and well if they don’t get that, they’ll never be anything other than a 4th or 3rd place team in a tough AL West.

Anyways Will Venable had a solid year 264/335/429 plus 24 steals playing most of his games at Pecto park.

Look at his home road splits.
Home: 239/301/340 (641 OPS) career (675 OPS)
Away: 286/365/509 (865 OPS) career (799 OPS)

vs ATL pitching by the way 293/376/547 (923 OPS) 8 for 8 SB

I’d be happy with this lineup:
LF Will Venable
3B Martin Prado
RF Jason Heyward
CF BJ Upton
1B Freddy Freeman
2B Dan Uggla
C Brian McCann
SS Andrealton Simmons

Samardzija, Garza, Jackson, Baker, Feldman, Villanueva and Wood as rotation options for the Cubbies. Not too bad.

Enquiring MInds – Yeah, maybe, but what happens if both Gattis AND FRancisco both have good Spring Trainings? Platoon with Martin.

@Lew — that would be a nice problem. I don;t know what to do about that — there might be a chance to make a trade if the opportunity presents itself but what needs would we have?

Braves solid almost everywhre.

Depth is never a bad thing. Some one who deserves to be on the big roster might start the yr in AAA.

Lew, that would be an embarrassment of riches. If that were to happen then Gattis goes down for seasoning. Juan’s out of options, no? Gattis plays in AAA until someone gets hurt. Someone always does.

We are better off with what we have now than pursuing Will Venable. Seriously, I am not kidding on this.

Lew they don’t need another leadoff type is what I meant, but we do, and they need pitching more than offense for the first time in years.

Disgusted – Atrade if they both did well? Why would we need to make a trade in that scenario? Seems we’d already have what we need if they both were that good in ST.

They have had interest in Venable before, so that could be a fit. He’s a Super 2 guy, so this will be his 2nd year of arbitration and he is controlled through 2015.

Career .253/.324/.415, 106 OPS+ hitter. 86 for 104 in SB’s over five seasons – 83% success rate.

Career .276/.344/.455 away from Petco Park. .261/.330/.441 vs. RHP’s. .216/.295/.287 vs. LHP’s.

What are the odds Corky catches longer than Jamie Moyer pitched? Once went 1 for 55 in big lgs over 3 years (’04-06) – & he’s still playing!

Venable isn’t a bad option. Not sure I’d have him in there vs. LHP, but he’d be a nice addition. Scheduled to make $2.5M through arbitration for 2013.

CB yeah thats right I forget about him and I kind of liked him in Cincy, Its interesting IMO how Theo is starting his rebuilding of the Cubs…not spending money like I thought he would!
