jeffrey d- I keep hearing how we can’t replace Chipper as if he were still playing a full season and putting up HOF numbers.
I never said Chipper was putting up HOF numbers.
You said it was crazy for anybody to think that the Braves wouldn’t score runs.
I said the Braves were 7th out of 16 in runs scored last year. They lost Chipper (led the team in OPS last year). They lost their leadoff hitter Bourn. They gained BJ Upton who hit .246 and in 34 more games just drove in 16 more runs than Chipper.
Yeah, I think Choo made the most sense for this team and Frank Wren knew it. Bauer was just more than we had to offer, and is probably a better pitching prospect than Teheran or Delgado.

Braves need OBP and a little pop in LF to make up the remaining slack in offense.
If McCann and Uggla come back to career norms and if Heyward, Freeman, and Simmons take steps forward, this offense will be much better than last year’s, even if they put Franscisco/Constanza/Schafer/Johnson into the eight hole.

Hopefully DOB knows something and is preparing us for Bourjos on the Braves. He’s read how many people are against it and he’s trying to calm those haters down by posting some nice stats for the guy. Personally I would like the guy on the Braves, another great fielder and pretty good hitter when healthy.
Bowman says he believes we could get Trumbo for either Teheran,Delgado or Gilmartin. I would do Gilmartin plus another prospect for him. He fits a lot of our needs.
Upton replaces Chipper’s lost power, while maintaining Bourn’s OBP.
Oh I get it. Upton is the perfect player. He replaces Chipper’s power with Bourn’s OBP and he’ll dye his hair red to replace Hanson.
I have high expectations for Upton (and we should considering his contract) but the truth is that he hasn’t hit over .250 since 2007. He’s OPS’ed over .800 in 1 season out of 8.
Again, my comment was only in reference to Lew’s “What idiot that doesn’t agree with me thinks that the Braves won’t score runs this year??”
The Braves were 7th out of 16 teams in runs scored last year. When you lose Chipper and Bourn and replace them with .246 hitting Upton, can’t you compromise that there is some room to argue that there’s a question mark concerning the Braves’ offense?
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Authorities in Alabama say a man opened fire in a hospital, wounding an officer and two employees before he was fatally shot by police.
Birmingham Police Sgt. Johnny Williams says the officer and employees suffered injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
Williams says police were called because a man with a gun was walking through St. Vincent’s Hospital on Saturday morning. When he was confronted by officers, he started shooting and wounded one of the officers. That’s when the second officer shot and killed the man.
If FW were to send pitching to LAA for either Bourjos or Trumbo, I wish he would sign Kyle Lohse to replace the pitching he is trading. Lohse would give an established veteran starter. Maybe a little less than Hudson caliber, but would still be a great signing. What kind of $$/years would it take?

I wonder if Fowler is still in play at all? Rox can’t be serious about that asking price. I like Dexter’s .389 OBP and the fact that he is from the Atl and good friends with J-Hey. As Lew pointed out a couple of days back, he may be one that would truly prosper from the ol’ change of scenery.
That’s an insult to put Clemens above Maddux. It shows an ignorance of pitching value and contributions towards winning games, and let’s not forget he’s an obvious cheater regardless of legal findings.
Forget 73 homers. In 2004, this guy reached base 376 times, walked 232 times and was intentionally walked 120 times. In one year. And here’s my all-time favorite Bonds stat: Even if he’d gotten no hits that year, he still would have had a higher OBP than the player who led the league in hits. –Jayson Stark
If FW were to send pitching to LAA for either Bourjos or Trumbo, I wish he would sign Kyle Lohse to replace the pitching he is trading.
I was staggered by the Tigers signing Anabel Sanchez for 5 years/$80M. He not even a .500 pitcher over his career with and ERA around 3.75 and a WHIP of 1.29.
Lohse went 30 – 11 with a 3.11 ERA, 400 IP and a WHIP of 1.13 the last two years.
I don’t know what he will sign for but those stats don’t sound like something the Braves can afford.
You wouldn’t sign Lohse to that contract. He’s not a stud #1 but he would fit nicely into this rotation. With Hudson he would add another veteran who knows how to win.
Unfortunately true. I wish FW could figure a way to sign him. I just think another established started would be great. It would also take a lot of presure off Medlin and Minor.
Joey G…I agree. I was hoping FW would find a creative way to trade for Willingham and sign Lohse (early on), but alas, not happening. We either trade prospects for a LF or we go with what I feel are the dreaded internal options.
I do think that credit should be given to Mejia, Francisco and White Bear for playing so well in Winter League ball that they have forced the Braves to reconsider options. If they were struggling, I’m confident we would already have another bat by now.
I believe a lot of you idiots created Lentz. You push his buttons and then complain about the responses you receive. Told this weekend that no trade talks brewing w Braves or Rangers on Fowler. Thought something might percolate. Rox source said no
It is looking more and more like internal options are going to win out. Shame, really. Money and prospects, but a worse team. Oh well, good enough to compete.
Paul Lentz actually has randomly messaged me on facebook talking crap about a 3 year old boy…. He’s sending these messages days after our last contact. I’m not egging him on at all. The guy has SERIOUS ISSUES. I went back and read his facebook wall and he has mentioned about going to his shrink and so on. The dude is a looney. You can’t even disagree with his baseball opinions without getting personal attacks as a response.
He basically called DOB and all of us on the blog morons and so on, All I said was “your the moron” and he totally took it 100 steps further. Actually talking crap about my girlfriend and her son and so on. After we had those comments on the DOB page, I stopped all contact and then a couple days later received a random message from him. Saying “How’s that retarded inbred bastard kid your raising doing today?”
Personally, I don’t put a lot of stock in Winter league stats. Heck, Constanza has had a couple of great seasons in winter ball…
not do I Jason, AA level at best
Totally agree. Nice to see it, but I would never not make a move because of what I’ve see there. They have been in the minors or majors long enough for evaluations. A small sample of winter league games should not sway front office folk….and if it is, well, then that is truly a shame.
“It is looking more and more like internal options are going to win out. Shame, really. Money and prospects, but a worse team. Oh well, good enough to compete.”
Something has to give. $12-15 mil left to spend and no LF. I could see going with internal options if we only had $4-5 mil left to spend. But you don’t save the kind of money we have right now for the trade deadline, it just don’t happen and it won’t this time either. Wren will get someone.

If Bill James is right, and 7 of our guys together generate .255 more OPS points, what exactly is that?
Well, take last year’s team, except give Jason this line:
.340 .430 .640 1.070
Pretty ridiculous, but that’s an extra .255 OPS points. If Jason had done that, where would we have finished up in 2012?
So the people who say we will score runs next year may have a point.

If McCann and Uggla come back to career norms and if Heyward, Freeman, and Simmons take steps forward, this offense will be much better than last year’s, even if they put Franscisco/Constanza/Schafer/Johnson into the eight hole.

Bourjos had impressive stats in only full major-league season in ‘11 and throughout his minor league career. Only time he didn’t was when he was a part-time player in ‘10 and ‘12. Ton of speed, lot of triples and stolen bases and good average and OBP in minors (nearly .360 OBP over his last two seasons in minors).
Hopefully DOB knows something and is preparing us for Bourjos on the Braves. He’s read how many people are against it and he’s trying to calm those haters down by posting some nice stats for the guy. Personally I would like the guy on the Braves, another great fielder and pretty good hitter when healthy.

As Lew pointed out a couple of days back, he may be one that would truly prosper from the ol’ change of scenery.

abwright … “Braves need OBP and a little pop in LF to make up the remaining slack in offense.”
jeffrey d … “can’t you compromise that there is some room to argue that there’s a question mark concerning the Braves’ offense?”
I’ve consistently said that the Braves’ ceiling is lower right now than it was in 2012 … because they’ve lost 120+ games of Chipper’s OBP.
However, that loss will be more than made up if the Braves players who under-performed (drastically) return to their career norms.
Not 1 out of 16, but better than 7 out of 16.
Of course, if everybody under-performs, Braves won’t score worth a d**n.

Totally agree. Nice to see it, but I would never not make a move because of what I’ve see there. They have been in the minors or majors long enough for evaluations. A small sample of winter league games should not sway front office folk….and if it is, well, then that is truly a shame.

Something has to give. $12-15 mil left to spend and no LF. I could see going with internal options if we only had $4-5 mil left to spend. But you don’t save the kind of money we have right now for the trade deadline, it just don’t happen and it won’t this time either. Wren will get someone.
