The guys on this team already know that strikeouts are an issue. The guys have decided that on alternating trips through the batting order they will all strikeout together, next time up they will all crush the ball together.

This way you look dumb one inning but man are they gonna rake the next time up!

Every player is different. Just because Francouer fizzled as a Brave does not mean that Simmons or the other young players like Heyward and Freeman will fall back. There seems to be great optimism from may baseball people that Simmons is the real deal. As a team whose financial picture compared to other teams will diminish in the coming years, they must take more chances on their younger and affordable potential stars.

patrick I actually think that Upton and Heyward are pretty similar.

well, he hits for better average, gets on base better, and slugs better, but other than that i guess so… :- )

i suppose i could see the comparison in some ways. ill say we will have to wait and see with heyward. we only have 3 season to go by, one where he was injured most of the time, so unless you want to weigh his minor league stats and what they tell us (i do) we’ll have to wait and see.

I don’t know that we’ve seen enough of Simmons yet to compare him to anyone…

we know enough about simmons to say what i said. from his minor league numbers and what he did in MLB last year, we know he puts the ball in play. doesnt walk much, doesnt K much. those types of hitters tend to have a high average that drives their OBP. he might not be a great hitter, but we know he will put the ball in play.

But strikeouts in general, are going to be a real concern with this lineup-I think.

maybe. probably not much worse than last year.

Yep… but if the Angels get him, that means my man is available. And they need another starter… Maholm, Delgado, Gilmartin… pick one. Bourjos, while a CF by trade, would be great in LF and could possibly be a leadoff hitter for us, allowing us to keep Prado 2. Or he goes 8, Simmons up top, whatever. 10-15 HR power, .400+ slugging, and should be able to hit for a .255 avg. His defense is lessened a bit by playing in the corner, but still pretty good. Speedy, RH bat.

Go Angels, then go get him Frank!

posted a .327 in 2011 when he started everyday… I’m sure he can do better… showed better plate discipline in the 2nd half of the season. Had a .346 from June 1 to season’s end… May was really only his bad month, where he posted a .257. Posted a .316 in September, but in the other 4 months he was .333+. He’s got room to grow, and is a young player. He should get better with more playing time; I think he would have had a good 2012 season if he hadn’t gotten hurt and sat for Trout.

Bourjos is cheap and plays better defense…

.271/.327/.438/.765/ .338 BABIP

Sure he likely would fall from that a bit, but I’d take him on the team… not looking for a superstar in LF, better than Constanza, Schafer… just give me .255/.330. He improved his eye at the plate in the 2nd half of 2011, .346 OBP. He’s not terrible, and is cheap.

.247/.301/.402/.703 with .301 BABIP is his career line… that should improve, and certainly that OBP will. Better option than Schafer/Constanza for sure, plays better defense, and no need for a platoon. Solid 8 hitter at least.

But when he started every day in 2011, .271/.327/.438/.765 116 OPS+, BJ Upton hasn’t hit a 116 OPS+ since 2009 and in the last 4 years has posted .242/.316/.420/.736 and costs 15mil AAV. One big deal is we wouldn’t see Constanza, Schafer, or Bonifacio out there. He’s a great outfielder who with Upton and Heyward would make one H of a defensive OF. And he has the potential to hit lead off and can steal some bases and is young, plus he hits RH which many fans on here seem to think is ideal for this team.
