so are you saying a fast switch hitting infielder or outfielder would not be a good pick up?
No. I’m saying that Bonifacio would not be a good pickup. All the positional flexibility, switch-hitting, yada yada, won’t mean much if the guy makes outs like he gets gold stars for ‘em. And that’s the one thing he’s proven to be consistently good at.
We keep hearing about players maybe being favorably affected by a change of scenery. Consider that Fowler is in the middle of pretty constant chaos in Denver with little chance of going anywhere near the playoffs and couple that with the fact he’s from Alpharetta, just married his girlfriend who is also from Atlanta and that both of their families live in ATL – maybe he’s the perfect candidate for a change of scenery having positive effectson his game.
Is that what the Braves offered for Choo, Efrim? Gilmartin+?
That’s what my offer would of been, Jason. But Wren hates the stop gap types it seems, so maybe it was even less than that. Aggressive could mean he offered prospects in bulk like he did for Bourn. Tough to say.
I have been reading the blog for a couple of years and vaguely remember Lentz. Just remember that he would always pick a fight with someone and then take it to grade school level when things didn’t go his way.
Hello everyone! Gordon from the Royals, was mentioned, as a possible interest too, so Gordon, Folwer, Bonifacio. I would be O.K. with. I’ll welcome either of them to the team too. All, hang in there, an be cool…… Talk tonight, and Peace my friends, and “Go!!!!!Braves!!!!!”
ncscoots, all I’m saying is the potential upside is there. It should be and probably is a last resort kind of thing. But is it happens, it won’t be all bad.
Thanks, Efrim. I thought I might have missed a post that talked about the actual package. Lew, I think you are correct about Dexter. I think he might pick it up a notch being back home and in his prime years.
Geez, before long, one will have to give up whole farm teams to get an actual, legit player.
I cannot envision giving up one of my top two pitching prospects for Dexter Fowler. I can’t get there. I’m not even saying that it won’t happen; just that I couldn’t pull the trigger on such a deal.
One of Delgado or Teheran needs to be traded. A third year in the Minor Leagues for either one of them will do no good for them or the organization. There is only room for one of them in the rotation this year. Not to mention, Beachy will be back around the All Star Break. So, I look for one of Teheran or Delgado to be traded.
Delgado is overrated IMO guys but go ahead and kill me on that one…his mechanics are not very good, but maybe he proves me wrong and I cheer for him in game 7 of a wolrd series victory!
Dentz is a weirdo fake, he can go nuts here and still talk normal(for him at least) elsewhere. he is just a poor pathetic lonely person who gets no attention at home, and negative attention is better than no attention at all. the question to me is is it sicker if he is really sick, or if he is not really sick?
We’ll hold on to Delgado and Teheran so we can once again have good pitching but struggle to score runs. Been the story of the past few years as Wren is always afraid to pull the trigger on deals that could help our offense.
Maybe the FO really believes in one of the two to take hold of the #5 spot and believe that one of Gilmartin, Spruill or Graham aren’t that far away if needed early on.
ncscoots, I agree with you that we shouldn’t give up Delgado or Teheran for Fowler. But the Rockies are going to want a lot for him. Just hope we don’t get desperate and do something foolish.
People get hurt over the course of the season. Bonafacio ability to play multiple positions could be beneficial. And obviously he’d be the guy to replace when you make a midseason move. For all we know the guy could come in and kill it. Bonafacio isn’t a terrible option.
The problem is those idiots in Colorado have a clouded vision of what their players are worth. Remember they asked for Minor AND Teheran for Fowler weeks ago. Maybe if Wren threw in some “premium” green they would lower their demand. Seriously, if they don’t lower their demand from that I don’t see a deal with the Rockies. I remember they asked for Prado and JJ for that Wheeler kid and Smith I believe last year at this time.
Fowler out of Coors concerns me, but i do like that he’s young and controllable. Has that speed and power combo and from Atlanta, but we cant view him as a sure fire upgrade, Delgado isnt exactly proven either. Not that Id personally make that swap but it seems fair for both sides.
Bonafacio produced well when given the opportunity to play everyday, can play 6 positions, switch hitter, and blazing speed. He could be a guy we give a shot at being our leadoff guy, while having him as a utility guy as a fallback. Certainly would be a solid addition to the ballclub in my opinion.
Y’all – about this administrator thing – might help if you included who you are here on the blog or we could end up with Lentz right back being Lentz. I know who some of you are from sending out artwork, but I just got a barrage from folks I don’t know.
Wren needs to be focused on a Stanton, Upton, Hart, or Willingham type hitter. Not a bench/super sub like Bonifacio. Get Willingham and then go get Bonifacio for the last bench spot. Thats were Bonifacio would add value.
Bonifacio and Fowler dont help the offense. At least not enough to justify trading for them
Depends on who we trade. If it’s the Minor-Delgado package Colorado reportedly asked for, then hell no. Trading just Delgado would even be tough, but I don’t think it would be the end of the world. The Braves have plenty of organizational depth at pitcher. Gilmartin and Spruill are close, Graham a little behind them, and Sims and Wood should come up through the ranks quickly.
Based on the reports out of Dominican, I would hold tight on trading Teheran. He might be working his way back to the “unreachable” category again.
I am not the biggest fan of Fowler and surely would not move Teheran for me, or Delgado. Colorado will want even more along with Teheran or Delgado. I dont see a match
Plenty of reminders this off season on the importance of not being cheap in the draft and player development areas. Free agent prices are so high and trade demands are so high that it is so difficult to obtain the pieces needed to win the championship unless you are the Dodgers, Yankees, Rangers, BoSox, Angels.
With Beachy coming back around mid season I think we could afford moving Delgado for the time being. I don’t know about next off season though when Huddy and Maholm are free agents. My guess is that Hudson will be back if he has another good year with us.
In regards to Fowler or Bonifacio, to me, it depends on what they would cost. Fowler may cost someone like Delgado. I don’t know what Bonifacio would cost, but I doubt it would be anyone that we would lose sleep over.
I am glad to see Wren is actively engaged. I do not believe Fransisco would last the year at third. Plus I would like to keep Simmons down in the order and Prado in the two hole. If the price is right we must make a deal.
The Rolling Stones have jumped aboard the already rock star-studded lineup for next week’s benefit concert to raise money for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.
The Stones join previously announced performers including Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, Kanye West, the Who, Roger Waters, Chris Martin, Alicia Keys, Dave Grohl and Eddie Vedder.
The show, called “121212: The Concert for Sandy Relief,” will start Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time at Madison Square Garden and benefits the Robin Hood Relief Fund. It will be carried on dozens of broadcast and cable TV channels nationally and internationally, including CBS, HBO, VH1 Classic, EPIX, Fuse, AXS TV and G4 and internationally on A&E International, the American Forces Network, Sony Entertainment Television, HBO (Latin America) and 37 MTV channels.
The music also will be carried on Clear Channel Radio stations and streamed on various websites including Yahoo, YouTube, AOL, Vevo, Hulu and MTV Networks. Event organizers say the show will be accessible to 2 billion people worldwide.
The concert will be simulcast to dozens of movie theaters in affected areas of New York and New Jersey, and free tickets will be distributed to residents of those regions.
Some notes from a CAC contributor to 2 winter league games they saw Mr. Francisco play:
Francisco hit cleanup for the Licey team in both games. So far in 108 at-bats, he’s posted a .315/.375/.565 slash line, with 7 HR’s and a 11/31 BB/K ratio. He is currently leading the Dominican League with a .940 OPS. From what I saw, he looked similar to the Juan we saw in Atlanta this season. As you’d expect, he had a very hard, pull-heavy swing (he lost his bat into the stands once). Overall, he did make some solid contact that resulted in a couple hard hit balls.
Again, this is a very small sample so it’s tough to put much, if any, weight into this. The numbers do look good, but I would avoid getting too giddy and temper the expectations until we see him in the spring for a month. If anything, a slimmed down Francisco is the strongest take away. This would also undoubtedly improve his range at third, where he already possesses a very strong-arm.
Had to leave to go cut down a tree for Christmas. It has become a great tradition for us. Something which 10 years ago I would have told you was not anything I had any interest in doing whatsoever. Our oldest is off at school as a freshman taking his first finals, and he asked us to send pictures of the tree cutting trip. He’ll be home next week. I think he’s a little homesick. Lots of California, NY, NJ types at his school. I think he’ll have fun hearing, “What the hell is a Christmas tree farm?”
Back to Juan Francisco. I see two notes on my obsession.
First, that just changing a few pinch hit numbers doesn’t mean much. But Juan is a little odd in that he had a ton of pinch hit chances, and he started a lot when Chipper was hurt. Last year he had 151 ABs at 3B, and 41 as a pinch hitter. And he sucks so incredibly bad as a pinch hitter, the ratio is close enough that it kills his overall numbers. I will also note that he is doing no pinch hitting this winter, which might explain a lot of why he is having such a good season down there. Coincidence?
Second, the BABIP monster reared its ugly head. I get the basic idea, but that’s about it. Is it normal for a guy who kills righties to have a higher BABIP against them? Anyway, Juan has only two years of meaningful MLB stats. Here are his BABIP numbers for the last two seasons:
YEAR/VS. LEFTY/VS. RIGHTY/COMBINED
2011/.222/.333/.316
2012/.280/.326/.318
Someone please tell me, does this mean one would expect Juan to regress or improve or stay the same against lefties or righties in 2013?
I note that Bill James is projecting a 2013 BABIP for Juan of .327. Does that mean he projects Juan’s numbers will go up next year?
I think Johnson/Francisco is the best we’ve got right now, easily. I’m not opposed to Fowler. I am sort of impressed that his very recent stats away from Coors are not really terrible. Honeslty, Wren knows far more than we do. I’m inclined to support whatever he does.
Efrim:
Go to the door marked “EXIT,” then go up the stairs. You will find the roof. Please don’t jump. We love you dearly.
I’m wondering if Wren hasn’t gotten into the same situation some of us here have. Early on, two players were imperative. As things progressed initially, other GMs had nutty demands for trades. Then Gattis did well, Francisco did well, and suddenly Teheran turned it around. Then when clubs began to get more realistic, Wren felt like he was less needy and less willing to part with assets. His urge to get the second guy via trade was a little diminished. Maybe we would have beat the Red’s offer on Choo 4 weeks ago. Today, Wren is less willing to part with someone like Teheran.
I hope he doesn’t make a rash move just because 6 weeks ago he publicly stated he needed to get a second “premium player” via trade or free agency. In baseball, especially with young players, things can change in 6 weeks. Part of Wren’s job is to stay on top of that.

Dang BABIP.

The Bill James BABIP projection for Francisco is an overall number. Not even he has time to do projections of BABIP splits.
