Golden Sombreros. Totally agree about the pitching the Braves had and the rest of the talent being just “good enough” .. Also Smoltz was by far the most successful in the post season of Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz because he was a power pitcher. Even though Glavine won the most important post season game ever for the Braves 1-0 and “Thank You Tommy for that”, he and Maddux didn’t pitch lights out like some of the real horses that could put a team on it’s back and win a game when it counted most. I remember Glavine starting out almost every year 3-0 because the hitters didn’t have their timing yet. Later in the year he had more of a challenge because he couldn’t throw the ball by hitters like Smoltz, Clemens, Shilling and so forth. We were blessed to win all those divisions in a row and Andruw Jones was around for 10 of those and his defense in CF contributed greatly to the success of those pitchers. I remember countless nights Andruw would turn in a highlight reel play with 2 runners on base to end and inning. Most other CF’ers would have not gotten to most of those balls and it’s a different inning.

Really I think BJ Upton will be fine. We don’t have a choice but to give him a chance. I agree with Sombrero. He has been around awhile. Maybe our hitting coach can help.

Egg Zackly Nashville….Seems like everyone thinks we just go get a veteran player or a no name player and we magically turn into the 90’s braves again. News Flsah….we don’t have that pitching staff right now….our pitching is decent, but no where near that good. We also have some nice complimentary players, but we LACK that super star that this team so desperately needs. Look I’m not saying J-Upton is the next K-Griffey or Pujols or whomever….but he or someone like him would be the closest thing we could get for our team as currenty constructed with being owned by Lackluster Media. I’ll take those chances over the gamble on tire salesman any day of the week.

rainman34… I think I like all of that if it could work out except I don’t love trading Simmons because I think he could have the same effect as Andruw Jones in CF all those years for the Braves. His defense is that special IMHO. What if we could trade for another SS the D-Backs would take through a 3 team trade?

my gut tell me that Wren will be allowed to spend some money on this team because I feel that Liberty Media will sell this team this year, seeing as they can sell now and not have to pay taxes on the sale, they will probably sell now before Obama tries to get that rule changed, and Liberty will want a good to excellent to entice more buyers to look into purchasing team for more money

I love simmons as much as anyone but upton is 25 with massive power even though he only hit 17 this year. Put him on the same team as his brother and see what they can do then. Trust me you never want to get outdone by your brother lol. The hardest thing to find in baseball is power the bad thing is next woud be a great all around short stop and simmons may be that if and thats a big if his bat gets to that point.

Well I’ve been saying it for a while now….I wouldn’t be surprised at ALL to see a 3 way trade involving….Asdrubal Cabrerea….Alcides Escobar….etc. for J-Upton or someone else of significance while keeping Simmons which everyone covets.

Golden Sombreros….. I think that would be a win for everyone as the D-Backs get a SS and the Braves end up with a young RH bat that could be a superstar AND we keep Simmons..
If that happens I’d say Frank Wren has had the best offseason by any GM so far this year..

Yea I hope he could pull something off like that. If not then maybe the only way would be some sort of trade with Simmons for J-Upton straight upish (1 other player?) and then replace SS with a bonafacio type or someone who is decent. Like everyone says you have to give something to get something. I’d personally like to keep Simmons, but I think it’s a little premature to annoint him for half of last season. I remember when Attitude Escobar was fist came up and everyone including their mother was saying the same thing about him. The following year he underperformedand the rest is history. I know Simmons supposedly has a better attitude, but unfortunately attitudes don’t count on the stat sheet as much as we want them to.

I watched Escobar play here for years. In fact, I’ve seen Sonny Jackson, Jeff Blouser, Furcal, Belliard, Renteria…play SS here and Simmons made plays last year during his limited time before his injury that none of those other guys ever dreamed of making.
Anyone that suggest trading him looses all credibility in anyhting else you post. ALL CREDIBILITY

everyone seems to forget that we probably have the second best fielding shortstop in baseball as a backup to Simmons, he gets knocked because his bat is not that strong, but trading Simmons for Upton would not be a bad deal at all, Janish played a hell of a game for us last year while Simmons was out, and Janish did come through in the clutch in a few instances last year, at least he was not a strikeout batter

Golden Sombreros… true about Escobar but there are some really respected people in baseball that think Simmons is already the best defensive SS in the game and are heaping the same kind of defensive accolades on him that Andruw Jones got early in his career. There is a reason the Braves don’t want to trade Simmons and I think it’s because they know it would be harder to replace him especially considering he’s really cheap for 4 or 5 more years than it would be to find someone of Upton’s abilities. I’d rather they trade Teheran for Wil Myers because he’d be cheap for enough time to allow us to lock up Heyward, Freeman and Prado. Just a question but would you trade Simmons for Justin Upton straight up?

Mark I agree.. We’ve never had a SS to come close to Simmons abilities.. The ONLY defensive player we’ve ever had to compare to him was Andruw in CF and that was something of beauty to watch. Teams win with pitching and defense up the middle why would we trade the best defensive SS in the game when it’s that much of premium? Makes no sense especially for a corner OF that could be replaced with many other acceptable solutions.

Look….I’m not advocating trading Simmons. I simply said it was a possible avenue to get J-Upton. I respect the opinions of people in the business, but I’m sorry I will not label Simmons as the next coming of Cal Ripken or whomever people wish to label him similar to. He needs to PROVE it first. However, I do see something special in the kid or at least it appears there is. I would definitely get a 3 way trade involved to get Upton so we could keep Simmons, but I’m also cool with other possibilities if it means our ball club is in a better position to win more games for the LONG term. I guess what I’m saying is I’m open to all scenarios until they don’t make sense for the Bravos.

I say no to Victorino and Schafer has already proven to be over hyped. If we want to make a BIG impact then we need a BIG Impact Player. I dont see Victorino as that type. I think he was a nice complimentary player on a winning team. Nothing more. I want to see something that invigorates fans not just all the die hards.

And someone PLEASE get the people down at the TED to amp up/change up how they get the crowd involved with the chop. It’s so lackluster it’s ridiculous. I remember going to the games in the early 90’s and Fulton County stadium would be ROARING with the chant and he Ohhhh ohhh Ohhh etc. It doesn’t have the same umpph anymore. I’m not saying we should get some idiot that constantly hits an oversized drum like hte Indians have at their stadium, but SOMETHING that makes it more fun. We need to get the Braves fans into the games the way the Falcons fans were creating all that noise against the Saints on Thursday. The kind of hype that keeps people doing the chant all inning long. These people make million dollar decisions and they can’t even figure out how to make it more fun or applicable to get the crowd more hyped up for man than 1 out.

If Arizona wanted any of those mentioned ss they would have traded J-Upton for them. Think people think. Ariz wants a big package deal like we sent to Rangers for Teixiera which also included a ss Elvis Andrus. Ariz. wants Simmons, Minor, Beachy and Delgado. Upton is not worth it. His contract runs out in two years.

Leadoff is important, justin would be great but Frank Wren can’t lose his head and overpay.
Simmons is great but Janis plays great defense and can hit 8th. I hope FW gets someone no one has thought about.
Has Ichiro signed yet? Could he be a good addition for a couple of years or atleast until Gattis is ready?

Mark, you’re wrong about the spike. Same play call after a spike still would have resulted in the same situation because it was a tipped ball. Once the ball was caught in bounds, time was going to expire.

Would have been nice to spike it, huddle up and think it through better. We were panicking, hurrying around and the spike would have made it 2nd and goal with 10 plus seconds. That was the thing to do and you see it done all the time in college and pros.
That said, it was the heat of the moment and Murray was trying to make a play to win the game. After the game Richt backed his QB which is what he should have done. He is a fine man and I hope he stays at UGA a long time

Bowman said on MLB today..Wren was after a lead-off hitter. I believe he is also after power.
Also heard rumor from Blue Jays that Rajai Davis could be traded. He had 46 steals last year second in AL.Thats all I know about him except he hits R .
Wren has a plan..we’ll see soon.

I don’t really think we need a leadoff, I think we should go after either J.Upton (try to make a 3 team deal) or C. Headley. Both cases our farm system will get hit but I think is worth the risk since they’re both under control for the next couple of years.

Remember the old Ketchup commercial, (back in the 70’s, & part of early 80’s), might’ve been Heinz(?) ketchup, the song goes; “Anticipation, it’s making me wait”, jingle, then the ketchup was so slow & thick, or so thick, wouldn’t come out of the bottle, msde my food cold wait’n for that sucker, or was it the other brand name? Somebody throw me a bone here, help me out, if you were around back then. But that old jingle – Anticipation, it’s making me wait, is what these winter meetings remind me of.

I think Liberty Media wants to bolster the team, because it is my belief that they want to sell fast, while they can sell the team tax free, I am pretty certain that Oblamer wants to take that deduction, and I feel they want to offload before the tax law is changed and they have to pay tax on the sell

Blanks was not scared off, Liberty was part of Warner and took the Braves as part of their buyout, as far as I can remember Blanks was in there wanting the team till the bitter end

@bbblauser; Mark Cuban would be awesome, but he turned down a petition from Bravo fans few years ago. Word got to him that atl fans wanted him to buy the braves, & he appreciated the fans request, but politely refused & said he was lookin’ to own a struggling franchise that was in hardship & take ‘em to the top. But I think other owners have something against him, or Bud selig does & somehow blocks him from buying a team.

Hey bbblauser; I wish they would, partner up buy’n our bravos, & atlanta would be free, the fans wouldn’t feel hijacked about there baseball team. Arthur would have the right people in place, the right players in place. The right Coach in place, he had to go through some growing pains w/ the birds, but he’s determined for them to get to the superbowl. He’s a very passionate man, he even said he loves Baseball more than football, & he loves football.
