Mark….so you want OBP guys and contact hitters? What good does a run here or there do if you have no one else to drive them in? Speed + Power gives you the option to come from behind in games or create a big lead. Not to mention a better chance on defense. I’ll take 3 30/20 guys any day all day over 1 or 2 9/20 guys.
I have a feeling the brothers playing together would be a good thing. Like Amber says they would challenge each other…they would keep each other level headed (as possible) and honestly….This Braves team needs a little Attitude. Nice guys finish last right (except in one scenario lol)? I want someone coming up to the plate that knows he’s better than the pitcher and he’s gonna prove it.
We already have too many swing for the fences type guys. Too many Ks. Have to have some guys to get on base and move runners. Thats why during games last year so many times many on the blog wanted Prado up rather than the big boppers. Have to have some balance.
I get the balanced approach, but a guy like bourn all of a sudden turned into a strikeout machine last year. All I’m saying is it can happen to anyone even a Marco Scutaro type at one point or another in someones career. If that is going to happen I would much rather have a Masher with Speed. My 2 cents. The glaring weakness on this team for YEARS has been Power and Speed. It’s time we change that. I dn’t think 1 or 2 OBP guys do that. I don’t buy into that at all.
I’m old school. I do like speed. Take Otis Nixon or Grissom and BJ Upton for example. Nixon/Grissom utilized his speed much more than Upton has so far because he put pressure on defenses with bunts, groundballs.
Might also add that we won more when we had those guys with rbi guys in rbi spots than we do now with akk these K Masters.
@Golden Sombreros Give it up with Mark. If every player was over 35 and slow as a turtle then he would be happy. Have Wren make the deal. Win the WS and mark would still not be happy.

Swisher would be a great addition if Wren could talk him into playing left instead of right. Plus he could give Freeman a break at first every once in a while. Has a big bat with power, over 30 hrs a year for last 4 or 5 years.

Do you remember how you loved a 40 year old player last season?
You take your old men to “The Field of Dreams” and I will take my kids all the way to the WS. This was a good signing, LIVE WITH IT. Now go get his bother. Save all the old men for the Yankeesw or your “Field of Dreams”
nothing wrong with Victorino, Amaro expected him to carry the team last year in Philly, but that team was not the same without Utley and Howard. Once Victorino got to LA he had a decent season
Amber, nothing wrong with youth, but you need experienced veterans to keep the youngsters in perspective, Victorino has plenty of playoff experience and world series experience, which the young players need to feed off, also Victorino is a great leader in the clubhouse, those things you have to learn through experience
Having brothers has not helped the Braves. Already been tried three times already with the Niekros, Mahrers and the Aarons. Won’t happen again. One will get mad if the crowd is on the other for not trying hard enough.
I’ll hang my hat on last year’s team. That was a great squad and I can’t help it that they’ve made a bad playoff format that will only last a few years at most.
I’ll hang my hat on last year’s team. That was a great squad and I can’t help it that they’ve made a bad playoff format that will only last a few years at most.
Wow….tell a few UGA fans to stick to baseball on a baseball blog and you’d think you started WWIII. I kinda thought these things were for baseball and Football blogs were for football. Go figure.
Sign a veteran to man left field. Braves organization has two good players in the minors who will be ready in 2014. 32 y.o. does not make you old by the way. Ricky Henderson still had lots of speed even in his early 40’s. Plus he didn’t strike out as much as the youth you have mentioned for being on the Braves (ie J.Upton).
Many Braves blggers like the Ugglas of the world for some reason. Striking out 1 out of every 3 ABs don’t bother them as long as they hit a HR 1 every 25 ABs.
Tommy Boggs When you take your “Field of Dreams” team. Take Dawgs with you. They are both losers. I don’t know whether I want to talk to you anymore. You most be a pedohile flirting with a 15 year old. What are you? 60 something.
I think talent wins out over experience if the experience is old and less capable than the talent. I have always thought Victorino is a good player but it seems he is in serious decline and will be over priced for what we’d get. BJ Upton has had great postseason numbers and Heyward and Freeman are stepping into leadership roles now. They will lead by example because they are hungry to play at a high level. I’m loving the movement to get younger and faster by the Braves. I really hope we don’t trade Simmons because the Braves will have plus defense from SS and CF which are the two most important positions to defend well. Simmons gives us an elite defensive SS that should be a perennial Gold Glove and All-Star contender.
Rather than overpaying Victorino who will get north of $10 Million per year it might be smarter to sign Kyle Lohse or Sanchez to be our #3 Starter and be able to trade Delgado or Teheran for Wil Myers or even go after Stanton from Florida and have an outfield set for the next 4 to 5 years. We’d be trading the years we’d have Delgado or Teheran for the years we’d have Stanton or Myers and have a proven major league pitcher to keep us in games every 5 days.
I enjoy the dialogue but I hope you’ll refrain from the flirting type talk. Nothing good can come from that on here. This is a baseball blog so people can knock around ideas about the Braves. There are other sites available for the other stuff. Hope you stay here though and talk baseball.
Mark, you just traded your two most major league ready shortstops to the Diamondbacks for Justin Upton. What are you going to do now? You won’t be going to Disney World!
BravesFaninNasheville….I agree. Throw J upton and Alex gordon in that mix for me though. All of those possibilities are intriguing. I like the idea of staying younger and more athletic. Victorino…Ross…Pagan….Ludwick…etc just don’t get me excited for some reason.
Amber Girl why are you letting Tommy Boggs get to you? Not worth it…. I like your ideas about keeping the agenda to make the Braves younger and faster. Let’s sign athletes with great baseball skills and IQ’s.
Seriously doubt this time the Marlins would trade to divisional foe. Plus doubt they will trade Stanton until the last minute when his contract is about to lapse.
Since we are gonna stay young lets just trade for Trout too. While we are at it lets get Harper. I’m sure they’ll send them to us for little of nothing.
@Mark andBravesFaninNashville. I came here to talk baseball. I will continue to talk baseball as long as Tommy Boggs gets off my case. He is the one that flirted. I am done with everything else except baseball as long as he lays off. OK?
Brves may have “owned th 90’s and early 2000’s, but look at all the disappointment they had in the postseason. Mainly due to lack of production from dynamic players. Anyone that has watched the Braves at least from the 80’s knows what I’m talking about. Time to change things up and get athletic and young.
@Mark Will it please stop. I thought you said talk baseball. I doubt if we could get Trout and Harper, Let’s get serious people. Victorino might be OK . I just don’t know if he is a good fit. That is just my opinion
What’s interesting about Amber Girl is that she signs off around 7:30 to 8:00 most nights to go to sleep but that’s mid-day in New South Wales. So she goes to bed around noon to 1 P.M local time. Very early bed time for a 15 year old. Hmmmmm???????
my gut tells me that Victorino is exactly what this team needs to pull the team together, remember when Schuerholtz signed Bream and Pendleton then went for Belliard to pull the team together, I feel that Victorino falls into that same category as Belliard
No one flirted with Amber Girl. Amber Girl knows nothing about baseball. Amber girl has been removed from the list of T-Shirt shooters.
Mark Richt is still on the list. So is Justin Beiber. Amber Girl is excited about Justin Beiber.
Have you forgotten that Gant (Mr Can’t) and Justice (Mr Octoberless) were young and athletic when they were on the Braves. It was the veterans who carried the team. You thinking youth is the way to go is way off base.
Thanks for chating everyone. Sleepy time. Good nite from New South Wales. Go Braves!!!!
Just one of many posts from Amber Girl signing off with “Sleepy Time”. I’m in central time in Nashville so this is 7:51 for me.
I just checked on the local time in New South Wales and its around 2:25 P.M. on Sunday so that means they are 17 hours ahead of us or 16 hours ahead of Atlanta. Very interesting to me that she usually goes to sleep in the middle of the day even on weekdays. No school Amber?
I’m not saying any youth. I’m saying dynamic youth. Yea you can say our past players did this and that and what did it get us? A bunch of division titles (when there was hardly any competition) and one WS title. Ron Gant is one of my all time favorite players, but this isn’t 1992. This is 2012 and things are much more cometitive and the landscape has changed. The Pirate vs Brave days are over! Time to try new things. We always hold onto verterans and sign Ho-Hum players. Look…I’m seriously the biggest braves fan in the world (I know I know…everyone is), but I’m seriously a die hard. I watch every game. It means a lot to me for this team to succeed. The lacking parts of our team haven’t been leadership or a guy that was a “winner” on an already “winning team”…..it’s simply Speed + Power combo. I know those players don’t grow on trees…which is exactly why we need to do what we have to do to acquire that type of player.
So that last post that I cut and pasted from Amber had her going to bed at 12:51 in the afternoon. I’m starting to agree that Amber Girl is a dude in a recliner in Georgia getting a lot of entertainment from a fictional character he created.
Either way I agree with you Mark and let’s keep the blog to Baseball…
one thing the veterans bring to the tables that the youth do not have is EXPERIENCE, and the youth need that so they can maintain during stressful situations, you have to learn that
@BravesFanInNashville.. I will make this statement and leave you guys alone. I thought you wanted to talk baseball. BravesFan Have you ever heard of nite school and in home school.Thats OK you dont want to talk baseball aNYWAY. yOU ARE RIGHT WE ARE 17 HRS AHEAD OF YOU.There are other things going on. I am not going to defend myself anymorwe. I want to talk baseball only.PLEASE
one of the most exciting players i saw that Schuerholtz got was a player he got for nothing, and he was the spark plug that made the pitching staff on that 91 team and that was Greg Olson an he was a exciting player, not a superstar, but the player that pulled that 91 Braves pitching staff together, they only had one veteran pitcher, and that was Charlie Liebrandt, the guy who got the blame for losing the world series, but without him the Braves would not have made it to the world series, he was the veteran that that young pitching staff needed to lead them to the world series
On a serious note. Braves would have won the division last year had we cut down on our Ks by just 1/4. 1 in 4 thats it. So many times we would have runners in scoring position and we can’t even make a productive out but K,k,,k,k,k,k,k, and k some more.
Now we sign a guy that K’d one more time than even Uggla did. I just can’t understand thrir thinking on this signing.
The worlds full of young athletic guys but most of them can’t hit 90 plus FBs.
Show me a team that was completely young that went to the World Series or even won it. Nada. Teams that won had youth and as well had veterans (those over 30 who some think are over the hill). Even the Nationals with all their youth have veterans such as Werth and vast majority of pitching staff. The Giants had both on their winning team as did St Louis in 2011.
Good ol Charlie Liebrandt….Pitched as a Lefty and Hit as a Righty. Just like me! Like I said though basball as a sport is changing. Just like football. You cant expect the same results from the same constructed teams. I know some things never change, but just getting one unnamed player who has no superstar potential, but rather the look of someone who would sell you tires is an extreme shot in the dark of that ever having any true impact. You NEVER know what you get with those players. I think any Braves fan would agree that we were simply destined to have a good run with the fortune of all that young great pitching and “good enough” players to back those pitchers up.
The Braves need a player who makes contact with the ball, not someone who whiffs alot. The 30 hrs during the season doesn’t atone for all the runs that could have been scored had they hit the ball instead of striking out.
What is all this verteran talk? You can be young and still be a “veteran” with experience. BJ has been in the MLB system for 8 years now. B-Mac has been in the playoffs. Tim Hudson has been in the playoffs. We have verteran players. That is a tired argument. Just because people advocate for “younger” plyers doesn’t mean we mean players straight out of HS that are over hyped. Look at the type of player Trout is….would you call him experienced? I mean yea he’s a phenom, but thats the point.
Got another idea you will all hate. Go ahead a trade simmions and delgado for j upton. Then tade eof and his 4 mill to the la yankees for dee gordan. Then sign jp howell for 2 mill to replace eof. I think gordan will bounce back and be a solid 340-350 obp lead off guy with 60 steal potential. hate away

Amber, nothing wrong with youth, but you need experienced veterans to keep the youngsters in perspective, Victorino has plenty of playoff experience and world series experience, which the young players need to feed off, also Victorino is a great leader in the clubhouse, those things you have to learn through experience

Brves may have “owned th 90’s and early 2000’s, but look at all the disappointment they had in the postseason. Mainly due to lack of production from dynamic players. Anyone that has watched the Braves at least from the 80’s knows what I’m talking about. Time to change things up and get athletic and young.

I know those players don’t grow on trees…which is exactly why we need to do what we have to do to acquire that type of player.

one of the most exciting players i saw that Schuerholtz got was a player he got for nothing, and he was the spark plug that made the pitching staff on that 91 team and that was Greg Olson an he was a exciting player, not a superstar, but the player that pulled that 91 Braves pitching staff together, they only had one veteran pitcher, and that was Charlie Liebrandt, the guy who got the blame for losing the world series, but without him the Braves would not have made it to the world series, he was the veteran that that young pitching staff needed to lead them to the world series
