What is the love affair with Shane Victorino?

…the guy made 9.5 mil last year while hitting .255. Just yesterday most of you will kinning Wren about Upton’s BA and the amount the Braves committed to him.

Good move getting rid of Hanson. He will be out of baseball by age 30. Hope the Angels sign him to a huge contract! The missing piece of the puzzle for Atlanta is now that left field/lead off slot. If they can get a guy who can fill both roles, the Braves will give the Nats a run for their money next season. A good contact guy with speed would do it. The lineup has plenty of power. I wish the Braves would start drafting more position players. They need to develop more Heyward/Freeman type players for the future.

Great trade. Hanson has lost his velocity, could not hold runners. This now gives those younger guys a chance. I would like to see the Braves get Headley. Looks like we have one more major move to make.

Now THIS trade I like. Good move, Frankie. Good BP arm that could also get flipped.

If he is able to wrangle away Justin from the backs, I’d say, in hindsight, the BJ deal was a multi-layered move with sights on his brother and would be jaw-droppingly brilliant.

I doubt that’s what this is, but regardless, today is much better than yesterday.

After thinking this over, I like this trade. Hanson has just been a disappointment past two years and we did need another setup guy for the bullpen and freeing up the cash to get a LF is huge. So, who will that OF be? That’s the big question. I hope it isn’t friggin PAgan. Victorino is a Braves killer so if he goes to AL, fine, but I wouldn’t be sad if they grabbed him. But the best option, of course, would be trading for Justin. I’d pass on Hamilton. Jason Heyward is pushing to get Justin Upton.

From MLB article on Braves getting Justin Upton: But before doing this, the Braves would likely need to remove some payroll by trading pitcher Tommy Hanson or another veteran player.

“To pull those kinds of strings, I’m glad it’s not my job to try to make that happen,” Braves outfielder Jason Heyward said. “That sounds like it would be a heck of a move for all of that to go down. Nobody would be mad at that. Nobody would be disappointed in that at all.”

Dan: With Bourn being a Boros client and given the Braves have tied uo over 15 mil per year for 5 years on Upton, I for one sure hope not. They need the extra 4 mil. and more to use to sign Prado, Heyward, and Freeman to long term deals.

Dan T , the great thing about shifting Hanson( and getting a decent return on a guy whose upside has taken a big hit) is thatmany more things are now possible that weren’t just a few hours ago. Justin would be a great get in my opinion but there are many options now. Thankyou FW

While I am not really upset the Braves traded Tommie as I always felt he wasn’t the pitcher advertised. Even at his best he was a #3 that had fallen to a 4- or 5. I do feel like the Braves should have gotten more for him. It seems like the Braves always over buy and undersell (see both Texeria deals).

The thing about about prospects I would think Bethancourt would be the only untouchable because he will take over for McCann because unless there is a career ending injury where are you going to put these prospects? Everybody on the team that starting is in their young 20’s? BJ Upton is like the old man on the team. So if we trade to get Justin its worth it.

The Braves claime Carpenter off waivers to bloster their starting pitching, just uin case the youngsters are not ready for prime time.

Hanson was traded because his salary was ready to baloon upwards, nothing more & nothing less than that. Had his salary still been in the 500k range, be’s still be wearing the “Script A” next season.

Atlanta will probably unload McCann sometime this year. I don’t see them signing him to a long term deal. In the deal with the Angels, I would have personally liked to see the Braves ship Uggla as well and grab Kendrick in return. That would have freed up about 5 million or so that the Braves could use and imo, Kendrick is better than Uggla.
Having Tehran in the minors for a 3rd year is bad juju and look for him to be in the mix for the rotation or as part of a trade once Beachy comes back in August.

this is a solid move. Hanson isn’t as good as projected and will never be a top starter. Walden has explosive stuff. (we should have gotten him in the Tex deal instead of the other reliever Marek who is now gone). Walden can close when needed. we will dump Moylan, another injury waiting to happen, and save even more money.
we don’t need C martinez either frankly, another possible non tender pitcher.
Wren is hot now.
PS Meyers from Nats is worth more than Hanson. Twins would not take Hanson over that 6ft 9in top prospect who is app 22 with no arm/back issues.
we can sign Ross or , if necessary, go after Swisher.

Guys its soooooo Obvious!! Braves traded hanson to free up cap space to SIGN Shane Victorino. We need a leadoff hitter which he gives us and he is a switch hitter! He is a 2 time allstar and a three time gold glove winner! Yea he had an off year but he will bounce back because he is a world series winner also would give us enough money to go after bench players most likely resigning reed johnson.

Justin Upton would be a great addition but he could be very costly and we would be giving up our best pitching prospects to get him you have to consider this will be tim hudson last year for the braves so we would need one of our prospects to replace him(teheran/delgado) and if paul maholm doesnt have a good year for us he would need to be replaced as well. With those two salaries coming off the books that would give us enough money to resign martin prado and probably a big free agent signing. With all that being said it should be a big year for the braves cant wait for the season to start! Go Braves!!

A trade for Justin Upton would be flat out incredible. That would be such an obscene amount of talent in one outfield. Wren will probably have to give up a bunch of good pitching if he wants to keep Simmons, but I cannot see how it wouldnt be worth it.

Relievers are a dime a dozen. Frank Wren is wrongly praised b/c he is simply doing everything based on a budget. Dumping salaries wont get the Braves past the wild card. When the Braves find more Hudsons’ to compliment their staff like they did when they got Maddux to go with Glavine and Smoltz then they will be doing something. They need pitchers that are capable of pitching 8 innings w/o missing a beat. The Braves pitching staff outside of Hudson is unproven and always subjected to injuries. Quite frankly the Braves conditioning of pitchers as gone down hill in the last decade.

Of course. now that Tommy has been moved the problem with havingal either Teheran or Delgado spend another year in AAA has been alleviated, moving another of two isn’t as pressing. Braves To Non-Tender Jurrjens, Moylan

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [November 30 at 4:10pm CST]

The Braves will non-tender starting pitcher Jair Jurrjens and relief pitcher Peter Moylan, David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (on Twitter). Both players will hit free agency.

Jurrjens started ten games for the Braves in 2012, posting a 6.89 ERA with 3.5 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 in 48 1/3 innings. However, he earned $5.5MM this past season and would have earned a similar amount in 2013 if the Braves had tendered him a contract.

Moylan, 33, appeared in just eight games in 2012. He spent much of the season recovering from rotator cuff surgery that took place last October.

Not sayin I want him necessarily, but Frank likes to get dudes that have multiple tools because we have such limited budget. If there is younger, faster, better hitter, lets get him. I just like the professional established hitter on a team. You don’t need 8 of them. But one older hitter is usually involved in some type of rally. We can’t continue to go up in the CLUTCH moments and expect Uggs,Free,or J-Hey,to go mammo. It just doesn’t happen enough. I’d rather get the dink & steal & dunk to get it done. One of the best moves the Braves have made lately. I am no expert but when I first saw him pitch I commented to friends that he would have to have arm surgery soon. Until he learns to throw with his body and legs he will continue to have problems pitching in the majors. If the Braves could get Upton’s brother without giving Simmons that would be super. I like this deal. Dumps Hanson and his “I need 100 pitches to get through 5 innings” arm onto the Angels (in addition to freeing up $4 mil in payroll). While I wasnt expecting a power arm in the bullpen in return (would have settled for a bag of balls type return..the main goal was getting rid of Hanson)…I have my doubts as to how effective Jordan Walden can be..given his Hanson-like dip in velocity in recent years.

Cant help but chuckle at Frank Wren’s insistence that payroll flexibility wasnt the main goal. I’m actually ok with this being a dump job. It makes perfect sense, if the money is used to get a legit left fielder and a couple of strong bench players.

“We have power and now we need someone who can get on base with regularity. OBP is going to be vital for whoever we get this time.”

Yeah, he can watch Uggla and Upton strike out from 2nd base instead of the dugout.

Yea Guys, I just heard Braves are talking about trading Simmons. They say play Prado at SS and Francisco at 3rd. Take Teheran, Simmons and Varvaro to Arizona for JUSTIN UPTON. Personally I say no. What do you think?

Hopefully the Braves will be able to bring Peter back not only he is a good pitcher when he is healthy but he also a very good person.
