I do that deal, easily. May just be 1 year of Choo, but he’d be 1 helluva player for us, and gets us back in the LF market for 2014, when there will be quite a few good options. Plus we get the draft pick when he leaves. I don’t know if you were a Willingham fan, but ‘d argue that 1yr of Choo and getthing that top40 pick is more valuable than 2yrs of a middle-aged Willingham; Teheran was a name bandied about to send back to Innesota.
December 4th, 201212:17 pm
“Haren is about as risky as banking on Medlen and Minor to be as good as they were last season”
December 4th, 201212:19 pm
but ‘d argue that 1yr of Choo and getthing that top40 pick is more valuable than 2yrs of a middle-aged Willingham
Argue it all you like, but that doesn’t make it sensible.
The Braves aren’t trading Teheran for one year of Choo. That would be ludicrously stupid.
December 4th, 201212:20 pm
“The fact that he’s made 64 starts in the last two years, despite the lurking back problem, leads me to go with “reasonable”.”
He dropped 62 innings in only 4 fewer starts. That’s an early warning signal. As I said, I warmly encourage the Nationals and all other NL East teams to keep taking these “reasonable risks”.
If Wren was willing to deal Delgado for a couple of months of Dempster, Teheran for Choo should be no problem
December 4th, 201212:21 pm
scoots The Braves aren’t trading Teheran for one year of Choo. That would be ludicrously stupid.
so why again wont they do it? ;- )
December 4th, 201212:22 pm
Yes. Especially when it comes to Minor
December 4th, 201212:25 pm
Wow – If Wren was willing to deal Delgado for a couple of months of Dempster, Teheran for Choo should be no problem
I think Wren saw an “in form” Dempster as a way to put the Braves over the top in the short term view of 2012. The deal for Choo involves more of a long-term view. While I may not go so far as to say ludicrously stupid, I do believe that Teheran is too much to give up for such a one-year rental. Perhaps it would be moderately stupid.
December 4th, 201212:27 pm
Just a thought but it seems that Texas may have interest in moving Michael Young. He wouldn’t be a bad option if Texas eats some of that salary for this season. RH bat that hits LHP pretty well. Only one year removed from hitting .340. Plays 150 gms every year.
December 4th, 201212:28 pm
Let’s see if this version escapes blog moderation…
I get that Justin Upton is a dynamic player and a very good fit for the current ATL team, but I think the fact that we already have his brother on the team actually HURTS his chances of being signed by the Braves.
If both brothers are playing well, then everything will be peachy… But if one brother is underperforming and gets dropped in the line-up (like Uggla, McCann, etc.) or gets benched for extended periods of time for the hot hand (like Heyward a year ago), then we could potentially have TWO disgruntled players when either one is slumping.
Or what if J. Upton is having a great year in his contract year, but the Braves are [blankitty blanking]? Can they trade him away midseason without seriously [blankitty blanking] B.J.?
December 4th, 201212:29 pm
Wow – no was Meds and Minor are not as risky as Haren – Minor has no injury history, they were both healthy last year, and together cost less than a third of what Haren will cost Nats next year…with Meds and Minor there is only upside.
I don’t recall ever seeing Choo play so I can’t comment on that. The only thing I know is his numbers from last season. He played in 155 games which is great, his OBP appears above average from the stats I’ve found, and he had a decent BA. But it’s the 150 strike outs that concern me. I don’t like the strike out, but even if I didn’t care about the Ks, that would put 4 players in the starting lineup that had 150 or more Ks last year, with Freeman approaching that number. That’s a little excessive in my opinion.
December 4th, 201212:30 pm
As I said, I warmly encourage the Nationals and all other NL East teams to keep taking these “reasonable risks”.
It’s a one year contract. You’re acting like it’s a three or four year committment.
December 4th, 201212:34 pm
Minor has a history of being crappy
what do the Braves think of Olt? I know they would not trade Simmons for him but would they trade Delgado or Teheran for Olt? EOF or Venters for Olt?
December 4th, 201212:35 pm
Choo, Toby Choo
December 4th, 201212:36 pm
Although the D-Backs have been aggressive in shopping Upton in Nashville, no team has stepped up to offer a frontline shortstop, tweets Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
Hopefully that means they will eventually realize they need to lower their demands or they probably will end up keeping him.
December 4th, 201212:37 pm
Do you think the Braves would have interest in Michael Young of the Rangers? Veteran player and historically has been a very good hitter. Coming off a down year for his standards but still hit LHP very well. If the Rangers were to eat some of the contract would the Braves get involved?
December 4th, 201212:39 pm
tony austin, I honestly couldn’t care less about SOs if a player is still putting up a 380 OBP.
December 4th, 201212:40 pm
So if we have to trade with the Rangers, how do we decide between the Young and the Olt?
Wow – sounds like you just don’t like Minor for whatever reason, but the guy 24 and pitched better than any other starter not named Meds in the 2nd half last year. Granted, small sample size, but again, he’s 24 so I fail to see where the risk is unless you are just assuming he will regress.
What’s up Braves fans? I’m at 30K feet heading towards the desert. Anything happening down in Nashville? I sure hope the Blue Jays decide to go all in now that the Yanks are in a world of hurt and give the Mets good value for Dickey.
December 4th, 201212:44 pm
I lean towards Choo
for Teheran, straight up!
I bet that deal is in place as a back-up plan if Wren can’t find a better player with longer control.
I bet this deal is NOT in place.
Haren- Proven vet, durable starter. #2 or strong #3
Medlen and Minor- young starters, and Minor pitched horrible to start season. Both guys only have an insanely good 12gm stretch under their belts… Mid to low-end #3 for Meds, #4 for Minor.
Crap – Turbulence. They want everything shut down. I’ll catch up with you good folks later.
December 4th, 201212:47 pm
Nothing like doubling upon your negativity…
December 4th, 201212:50 pm
Both guys only have an insanely good 12gm stretch under their belts… Mid to low-end #3 for Meds, #4 for Minor.
That’s a bit harsh. I think they both can be capable of a step up from those projections.
December 4th, 201212:51 pm
Nick Cafardo @nickcafardo
Red Sox didn’t like what they saw on Dan Haren’s medicals on his hip.
Rick… Exactly. He has an elite OBP. And it’s over .400 against RHP. He slugs .500+ against righties, creating a .900+ OPS. Still has a good OBP against lefties. Hile it may be just for 1 year, I’d pay the “ludicrously stupid” price of Teheran for him.
Anders – Nothing happening on the Braves end. I hear they’re about to start folding up the tents and head back home to get ready for their Dominican trip this weekend.
Have a safe rest-of-your-flight.
TOBF – I think you are underestimating Meds and Minor. Yes they did have an insanely good 12 game or whatever stretch but I do not think it is unreasonable to project Medlen as a solid #2 and Minor a #3.
Aside from not throwing 100 mph, I am trying to figure out why many continue to be so down on Minor. He added velocity 90-93 on his fastball. He has a great changeup. He does have a breaking ball. He gets strikeouts. He is figuring out his command. He is young, left handed and a starter who is affordable for years to come. I hope people keep selling Minor short and he keeps proving them wrong like he did at the end of last year
December 4th, 201212:54 pm
Scutaro would be a solid pickup for the Cardinals. Allow them to hav Matt Carpenter and Daniel Delcalso coming off of the bench, which is really strong. Both those two can be starting infielders for a lot of teams.
December 4th, 201212:55 pm
Jerry Crasnick @jcrasnick
#Redsox, #Cubs and #Yankees also checking in on Victorino. #Braves and #reds .. not so much. #Phillies interest is tepid.
December 4th, 201212:56 pm
Paul McCord @jpmccord
#Braves new centerfielder BJ Upton played 428 of 492 minor league games as a shortstop.
Looking more and more like we won’t get a LF at the meetings.
December 4th, 201212:57 pm
#Indians have emerged as a prime suitor for Victorino. Terry Francona reached out to him personally earlier in offseason.
And we get Choo
December 4th, 201212:58 pm
The Pagan & Bourn deals appear to be helping Victorino’s market. He’s now looking at a 3- or 4-year contract.
December 4th, 201212:59 pm
MLB Trade Rumors @mlbtraderumors
The Mets continue to push for Wil Myers in trade talks with the Royals, according to ESPNNY.
Per mlbtraderumors, Mets possibly looking to trade Dickey to the Royals for Myers.
December 4th, 20121:00 pm
Brava, you edged me out!
Kevin McAlpin @KevinMcAlpin
Fredi says Bradon Beachy should be ready by late July/first week of August. #Braves
He added velocity 90-93 on his fastball.
According to Fangraphs, Minor averaged 90.3 mph on his fastball in 2012. I’d say his range is more 89-91mph based on that.
December 4th, 20121:04 pm
Well, I think we can all agree to be happy the Nats signed Haren, rather than Greinke. Of course, he may not pass his physical.
December 4th, 20121:06 pm
Smart move by the Mets… Myers is going to be a valuable asset for years to come.
Like I’ve said before, it’s not every day that the minor league player of the year comes available. I wish the Braves were chatting with the Royals to at least see what the asking price would be in terms of Braves players.
Maybe they have, though… doubtful, but maybe.
December 4th, 20121:07 pm
Maybe I am being harsh on those two… still want to see some more from them
If the Mets can swing Myers, wow. He’s gonna be a beast. Myers, Stanton, Heyward, Harper… 4 ggreat stud OF in the NL east. And the Mets would have the RH, possibly more powerful “Heyward”. They will be on the rise, especially with those good hardthrowing young arms they have. Trade Dickey.
Tomahawkin (Suffering Fan)
“Jerry Crasnick @jcrasnick

Dammit, I want VIC NOW!
December 4th, 20121:08 pm
Constanza should at least make the team out of ST
December 4th, 20121:09 pm
I would not trade Wil Myers for one season of R.A. Dickey. No flipping way. And I would not trade him for Jon Niese either, even though I like him as a solid mid-rotation starter. Niese sounds more likely as he is controlled for a while, I believe.
Daily DOB…REALLY?? — Nowhere man
If it would help ease your mind, could just file whatever new thing I’ve written each day for past week or so under the Daily DOB tag? Would that make things less confusing for you, make you less anxious over the fact that the new story I spent hours working on yesterday — trying to find information, making calls and texting folks, then meeting with Wren before sitting down to write — was filed not under the Daily DOB tag but under a simple headline?
Or if we just remove the “Daily DOB” tag, would that make it all better for you?
Or should I just skip pursuing actual news here at the meetings and skip writing a story for the paper each day in order to do a “Daily DOB” blog so you can have a clean slate that might load faster and you want have to figure out which of the other blogs to comment under?
December 4th, 20121:11 pm
what would it take for the braves to get Dickey?
December 4th, 20121:13 pm
Not, me, T. I HATE Victorino. Hope he signs a 4-year deal with the Indians and we get Choo through a reasonable trade.
December 4th, 20121:14 pm
Dammit, I want VIC NOW! – Tomahawkin

Statistics show, double ear-flap helmeted switch hitters are consistently more productive than the single flappers.

December 4th, 20121:15 pm
Ken Davidoff @KenDavidoff
#Mets open to two-year deal with Ryan Ludwick. $6-7 mil per year. #Reds still favorites, though.
Murph – Just curious, why do you think it’s doubtful Braves have talked to Royals about Myers?
December 4th, 20121:16 pm
See, even DOB is in a bad mood regarding the lack of Braves’ rumors. I kid, I kid.

No, you’re not.
December 4th, 20121:20 pm
Jack Curry @JackCurryYES
With ARod out, Yanks have spoken with Kevin Youkilis’s agent. Word is that Youk would consider 1-year deal if money was at premium amount.
December 4th, 20121:21 pm
He may be in a bad mood, but if so; it isn’t because of the lack of rumors regarding the Braves. So, yes, I do kid.
December 4th, 20121:22 pm
Braves should just sign McClouth for LF….now I kid, I kid
no reason to make a deal just to make a deal. Still needs to be the right player at the right price (trade price and contract price)
December 4th, 20121:23 pm
I think that might cause a riot in Braves Country.
December 4th, 20121:24 pm
FOX Sports South @FOXSportsSouth
Setting up for a shoot krismedlen54’s house for a new show out next spring! Stay tuned!
I would rather have Nate in LF than Constanza.
December 4th, 20121:25 pm
Daily I assume would mean something new each day like the AJC that hits my doorstep each morning.
December 4th, 20121:32 pm
I don’t think DOB is in a bad mood, maybe he just gets tired of the same old drivel from certain bloggers who don’t appreciate all the work that he does for the AJC.
Many times I thought it would be “cool” to be a beat reporter, but the job DOB does really opens my eyes to how hard it can be and how much time it consumes.

Good day all
Please do not sign NATE for LF. we have a NATE type player going to play CF for us next season.
December 4th, 20121:34 pm
I don’t discuss my views on religion, sorry RT @sfcolin55: @keithlaw Pagan?
December 4th, 20121:35 pm
Hard to understand why someone would complain about what is essentially free content and forum, but someone will always complain, no matter what.
December 4th, 20121:42 pm
McLouth would be a huge upgrade over Constanza in LF.
December 4th, 20121:43 pm
The douches are out in force!
December 4th, 20121:44 pm
If the Mets can get Yordano Ventura or Jake Odorizzi plus 1 or 2 others, that’s a really strong deal for them.
I don’t think DOB is in a mad mood either…I was kidding. Me, on the other hand? I would love to hear some rumors about serious discussions about a difference maker in LF!
December 4th, 20121:46 pm
BenBadler Solid everyday guy. Too soon to worry about pos change RT @c_signorelli upside of #braves Peraza? will he move to 2b or CF bc of Simmons?
December 4th, 20121:47 pm
BJ UPTON is incapeable of hitting for a .250 BA, his OBP last year was .298 HE IS JUST WONDERFUL.
December 4th, 20121:50 pm
BJ UPTON is incapeable of hitting for a .250 BA
George, I believe you said the same thing about Heyward last year, no?
Georgia needs to be out the organization… no way in hell should he be our LF or even on the 25man. Nate would be a massive improvement over Canstandya and Id love to have him back. Good player when healthy, he can actually get the ball out of the infield. Better defender. Course, if we got Ate, M expecting a big time rotation upgrade
December 4th, 20121:51 pm
we could do worse than a McOut and Reed Johnson LF platoon
of course, I am hoping we do a lot better than that
December 4th, 20121:52 pm
Who would not be an upgrade over Constanza?
I would go with Ted Williams frozen head over Constanza, but that is just me….
just scroll over george. learn to spell incapable sir because you are incapable of forming a relevant thought. Where is a truant officer when you need one? Must be a kid, no adult would post such drivel.
December 4th, 20121:53 pm
December 4th, 2012
One word……Constanza! ♥
December 4th, 20121:54 pm
Diamondbacks have signed Eric Hinske.
Hinske has signed with the DBacks.
December 4th, 20121:56 pm
Dang, Heavy is no longer with us?
who cares. he’s done.
Bowman or Constanza…. probably lean Bowman. He’s big enough to cover the turf out there.
December 4th, 20121:57 pm
I’d view Myers, Olt, etc in a similar way. Trading a known quantity for an unknown quantity is totally risky, to the point of almost being foolish. If it doesn’t work, it could cost people their jobs. If it does work, though, you’ve got the most powerful, dynamic offense in the NL.
Sometimes you gotta take those chances, cross your fingers and toes, and hope for the best. If it fails, you move on… but if you never try, you’ll never know. And that, to me, is the definition of an epic fail….Murph
yeah awful easy to talk about somebody else being willing to take that kinda risk with his peachy high paying job……..those kinda deals almost never happen during the winter with a contending club giving up a starter for some unproven prospect
December 4th, 20121:58 pm
Jayson Stark@jaysonst 7m #Braves have been portrayed as a big pursuer of Justin Upton. But sources say Braves & Dbacks have concluded there’s “not going to be a fit”
What are you guys talking about? Wren is working to add bench help not a LF or 3B. I really believe Wren has a hard time letting go of top prospects like Teheran and Delgado based on his comments, or other teams don’t value them as high as the Braves do. We really haven’t even had any legitimate or specific rumors from anyone following the Braves. Pretty damn boring so far…
Steve Berthiaume @BertDbacks

This is why I would be seen as a ground-breaking GM, were I to take such a job.
At least, for one off-season.
December 4th, 20122:00 pm
Hinske needs to either hire a great personal trainer or visit the fountain of youth….. or both.
Good luck Eric.
Was the D’back’s watching him the past year and a half?
December 4th, 20122:02 pm
Frank wants to let go two of our top prospects…..for bench help?
Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
December 4th, 20122:03 pm
I am starting to wonder if the J Upton rumors were based solely on fact that BJ is now a Brave
Yup, we are going to see a lot of Francisco and Constanza.
We really haven’t even had any legitimate or specific rumors from anyone following the Braves. Pretty damn boring so far…
Just because there are no big rumors doesn’t mean nothing is going on behind the scenes. I think the Braves will make a trade at some point, but it may not be for another couple weeks for all we know. They may wait for teams to snatch up free agents and then the picture will be a lot clearer for outfielders. For example, Choo might be a no brainer trade candidate if the Indians add Victorino.
Hinske taking his growing weight, declining skills, and slow bat to AZ… good luck buddy. Hope you can break .200! Thanks for one good season, 2010.
Maybe he’s their new RF and we’re getting Justin! Haha
We talk baseball, other sports, music, movies, BBQ and whatever (except politics or religion)
