I don’t think that A-Rod was as much into it as some of the other guys. I would have sworn he was a clean player till he came out with it.
He’s a prime example of why they should all be banned. Look at all the money the Yankees are going to have to dish out because his body is breaking down prematurely. You won’t convince me that isn’t from doing PEDs over many years. Who really knows how long he was on them?
Does anyone think Liberty, being a media company, sees uniting the Upton brothers as something with inherent PR value, and based on that might give Wren financial leeway–cash consideration as part of a deal or some way of converting cash into replacement prospects, etc.,–in order to get that done in preference to some other deal?

I would try to answer the question if I knew exactly what it was.
Plus, Disgusted, I disagree that players who didn’t do it as often as others should be given a pass. Cheating is cheating if you do it one time, or constantly, the fact remains that you had an unfair advantage over the players that didn’t do it.
Got a question for DOB or anyone else who knows. During the winter meetings does something like a rules comittee meet? I am wondering if that rules comittee [if there is one] can change the playoof system to get rid of that awfull one game playin game?
That kind of meeting takes place at GM meetings, and also at the owners meetings. But not at Winter Meetings.
Yea, that is an interesting thought old man — Have to think on that for a few minutes.
In the end they are a corporation and they will put their corporate hat on first. They have to — cause their responsibility is to their stockholders, etc.
They could not be a sugar daddy owner like a Mike Illitch even if they wanted to given that in a corporation there are so many stakeholders.
A couple of WS championships has the biggest PR value.
Please, one UPTON is way more than enough, of course the younger one has the better stats, we ended up with the bum one who can’t hit even .250 one year in past four and had a OBP of .298 last year.

I cannot say that I really agree or disagree with you Brava on your 7:35 statement. I am not sying you are wrong. But there is a societal precedent for reasonable leniency for a one time or even a two time mistake.
Second chances happen in business offices all the time. Sometimes it works other times it does not.
It all depends on the totality of the whole picture. That is just how I see it, you disagree I do understand why.
Disgusted, I think they get their second chance when they test positive for PEDs and are allowed to sit out for 50 games and go on with their careers. My only point of reference is the Army I served in for 24 years where one positive drug test would end your career.
What I’m saying is, these guys are already allowed to cheat and get chance after chance to continue making millions of dollars. They should not also be rewarded by being ensconced in the Hall of Fame along with their peers who didn’t cheat (or didn’t get caught). Just my opinion.
The PED’s are still out there and being used. The one of choice is a synthetic testosterone, when applied properly regarding timing, evades the current testing protocol.

Better way for me to ask question. Will a rules comittee try to change the playoff setup before the start of 2013 season?
Heath: Because your investing doesn’t affect other employees, it’s strictly for your bank account. Rose, as a player or manager, could have not tried hard on certain plays or made different manager decisions that certainly would affect the outcome of the game.
I wouldn’t mind the Braves taking a look at Youk. He would be able to get days off w/ Francisco complimenting him. He Youk handles LHP pretty good and this was his first all around down year. Even though he was decent in Chicago. He had a OPS over .800 every year but this year and his rookie year.
To me, the main drawback of Choo is he’s a one year rental, for his 2013 arbitration number. He made 4.9M last year. Could we negotiate a 3 x 10M deal with him, a year before he has a right to be a free agent, and lock him up? Trade for him and then have that deal pre-arranged? Are you allowed to do that?
Ever since Tex, one year rentals just scare me. Choo might be tempted by the guaranteed money.
I’m gonna throw this out there just because that is what I do. With the Braves resigning Janish, I think there’s a real possibility that Wren could actually include Simmons in a deal to get Justin Upton. I say that because Janish didn’t hurt the team when he was the starting shortstop last season. He saved us in a lot of ways with his defense. On the one hand, you could have the likes of Reed Johnson, Fowler, Ross, etc., to go along with Simmons in the lineup, or you could have Justin Upton and Janish in the lineup. Janish doesn’t sound bad if that damn Uggla would just do something offensive like so many of you think he will. And of course, it could pave the way for Ahmed with Janish being the failsafe. Personally, I don’t have a clue what will happen, but I wouldn’t bet the farm that Wren wouldn’t pull that trigger. Sometimes you have to deal big to get big results.

Rose should never get in, He broke the Cardinal rule of baseball posted in every clubhouse and thought he was too big for them to do anything about it
PEDers where legion as were speed users. Basically if you punish PEDs users you are punishing them for doing the same crime but with more modern effective tools. I bet my boots that if PEDs were around earlier most of the speed users would have been using them instead…..
Simmons would only get traded as part of a deal to go beyond the Upton, Gordon, Myers level. Like Stanton or McCutcheon. Something like that. Those are unrealistic/fantasyland, so that’s why Simmons is not getting traded.
I like Choo. Never seen him play to be honest, but I’ve seen some highlights of his d and his hitting, plus just looking at his stats. It’d be a very solid pickup.

I’m coming around to this way of thinking Nolie. I’m not there yet, but with distance from the peak of the PEDs era, I can see the wisdom in your perspective more and more.
Year of the rookie quarterbacks. I don’t think the Redskins are for real, not yet at least, but New York is so up and down. Hard game to pick but I think i’ll go with the giants.
I think it’s pretty safe to say that McCutcheon is definitely not going anywhere and Stanton is 99.95% not going to be traded this season while he is still cheap
I am not a fan of his George. He has as much physical ability as about anybody in baseball and showed it the first two seasons. I do not know what happened but the last 4 years have been mediocre and well below what he should have produced.
There is no way to know what we will get for our 15 mil. If he plays with the concentration and enthusiasm of his first few seasons we will be very well off; if he plays like he has the last 4 he will still be a decent player but not worth 15 mil and he will frustrate a lot of Braves fans just like he has a lot of Rays fans.
It is done so no use ranting against it, we can only hope that he matures and develops the skills and concentration that will serve his tools well. Go BJ!!!
No, no. He had concussions from playing football. That’s what the PC crowd is claiming, anyway. And the PC crowd is always right – right?
I don’t know want to speculate about what happened, would rather wait for the facts but given how many things that are coming out about all these hits to the heads these guys are sustaining through a lifetime you never know.
I don’t know want to speculate about what happened, would rather wait for the facts but given how many things that are coming out about all these hits to the heads these guys are sustaining through a lifetime you never know.
I’m not buying the concussion explanation. It fits too neatly with the effort lately to brand football as too violent. Chances are that Belcher had poor coping skills and was immature; perhaps, he had a volatile temper, among various ordinary explanations for his crime and suicide.
All right, I have to object to the constant reference to Atlanta as “midmarket.” According to multiple rankings, we are somewhere between 8-10 in evaluations of tv/media markets or even by population. That’s not mid-market, y’all. We’re not NYC or LA, but we ARE NOT midmarket. (And the separation after NY and LA is minimal among #s 3-10). The numbers should, ultimately, reflect that, but if this tv deal, which is for an absurdly long term and was negotiated it appears to me not at arms-length, continues, we’ll be back to the horrid Braves of old. Somebody needs to do some investigative reporting on this — McGuirk was on both sides of that deal. Possibly others. Conflicts of interest abound.
Has FW considered trading with Milwaukee for Norichika Aoki as an under-the-radar leadoff man? I know he’s from Japan, and only played here 1 yr, but I was pretty impressed with his OBP, SLG, and SB’s.
I hear they’re looking for pitching, and I wonder if we could trade some of our bullpen depth (Walden, a lefty reliever, Gearrin, etc.) for him.
It also makes me wonder if FW may have been too quick to trade Hanson, and we could have possibly filled our leadoff void thru dealing him.
I’m not buying the concussion explanation. It fits too neatly with the effort lately to brand football as too violent. Chances are that Belcher had poor coping skills and was immature; perhaps, he had a volatile temper, among various ordinary explanations for his crime and suicide.
Agree. I can’t stand reading all these excuses being made for a cowardly murderer.

It’s not always about the concussions, its also about the brains inability to heal correctly after taking a number of violent hits within a period of time. It can at times exacerbate what was already there or it can completely alter a person. We won’t know if any of this is the case until they are able to look at his brain and given the way he died I don’t know if thats even a possibility. Point is nobody knows right now.
Agree. I can’t stand reading all these excuses being made for a cowardly murderer.
Sadly, I think the cynics are using Belcher to get at football – to make the game the cause for his crime and death. There’s a growing anti-football sentiment in some segments of society. I think those segments are latching onto the Belcher tragedy to advance their arguments.
If we’re trying to save money, what about trying to pry Emilio Bonifacio from the Bluejays? He had a decent year in 2011 playing full-time. Plus he can play 2B, 3B and SS as well as OF, and he’s 27 years old.
If I were Stanton, I’d become the biggest pain in the ass the Marlins would ever encounter. Hold press conferences ripping the owner and management, timely screw ups in the field, a real downer in the clubhouse, etc.
I hate to say this but Jovan Belcher brought it upon himself.
Does his being drunk and alledgedly being with another woman have anything to do with judging him. No — of course not.
But to take the life of the mother of his child —– that is when he brought it on himself.
I generally feel great comassion for those who choose to go that route but its hard given the nature of the whole thing.
Concussion issue of not —- there are plenty of ex athletes who played tough sports who do not go to that point.
One way or another he is a murder of an innocent woman who did not deserve that.
And that child is caught up in the middle — that is the biggest tragedy. The baby does not deserve that. God bless the child. I hope she can grow up healthy — never know. That is what is important now. The baby.

I think it’s highly unlikely that concussions instigated Belcher’s actions. If violence toward others and/or oneself was the the result of concussions, there would be more instances of such throughout football and over many years.
If I granted that Belcher was damaged from concussions and that somehow triggered his violence, then his actions are an outlier – a very rare exception.
the problem with that is that, regardless of why someone would do things like that, it paints a bad picture for them- acting like a petulant child and throwing temper tantrums to get what you want? Not the kind of guy I would want on my team, no matter how good he is- what happens if things start going bad with his new team? Will he act the same way? (I don’t think anything like that would ever enter Stanton’s mind- he seems like a classy kid…at least, I hope it wouldn’t)
And that child is caught up in the middle — that is the biggest tragedy. The baby does not deserve that. God bless the child. I hope she can grow up healthy — never know. That is what is important now. The baby.
This is true. And, as a mother, I can’t imagine what his went through watching her son pump nine bullets into his girlfriend right in front of her. I’m sure she’s completely devastated by this tragedy.
Does his being drunk and alledgedly being with another woman have anything to do with judging him. No — of course not.
If the allegations are true, what we can surmise is that Belcher’s actions the night before likely led to a domestic dispute that escalated to the point of Belcher resorting to deadly force. Domestic violence happens across the nation and not as a result of one or another party suffering concussions. Some of that violence is deadly.
That’s how it works? When was the last time you saw a player act like you described? If it were my player, at this stage of his career, I would give him 2 options: Play like you care for us, or don’t play at all. End of discussion.
Nobody is making excuses for Belcher, just saying that maybe you should not be so quick to dismiss the idea of head trauma maybe having played somewhat of a role. Even if what he did had nothing to do with head trauma, the game is violent and a lot of players pay a price for it. The results speak for themselves. Forget Belcher and look at the numerous players who have had health problems due to the game. It’s not a witch hunt. It’s former players searching for some answers.
And Jeff R I never said concussions could lead Belcher to do that. There are different kinds of head trauma.
Football is a great sport — the safety precaussions of today do make sense.
There are political and social enginerring groups that would love to demonize this game. Take it to the point where the game could be in jeapordy.
The players of today are so fast, and so conditioned that they are running missels into each other. Hence, player safety rules make sense.
The other day I did see the video on that Jack Tatum hit on Darryl Stingley — in a stupid pre season game. A hit that could have been avioded. Today Tatum would have been fined, maybe suspended and what else.
Sickest play I have ever seen on the field.
Atkinson on Lynn Swann — another filthy hit.
Another time I remeber a sack by Joe “Turkey” Jones on Terry Bradshaw — picked him up and he landed on his neck.
I am kind of glad they have some of the rules of today. I am starting to understand the place where Roger Goddell is in.
I hope that Alabama defender gets suspended for that cheap shot on Murray.
Trader Jack:
Some people have integrity. They live up to their end of the bargain regardless of how others around them may act.
I believe that Stanton will be that type of individual. Sure, he is not pleased with the trades and payroll reduction but that should not affect his effort on the field or his part of harmony in the locker room.
@ajcbraves: They’ll listen, but must be front-line starter or someone w/ that potential. RT @KCH_76: @ajcbraves @ryc30078 didnt think AGordon was avail?
Get it done Wren. Who qualifies as front line starter or has that potential though?

On the one hand, you could have the likes of Reed Johnson, Fowler, Ross, etc., to go along with Simmons in the lineup, or you could have Justin Upton and Janish in the lineup. Janish doesn’t sound bad if that damn Uggla would just do something offensive like so many of you think he will. And of course, it could pave the way for Ahmed with Janish being the failsafe. Personally, I don’t have a clue what will happen, but I wouldn’t bet the farm that Wren wouldn’t pull that trigger. Sometimes you have to deal big to get big results.

The chances of that happening is virtually nil. His agent is Scott Boras, who takes his clients to FA

Heck, for Stanton, I would trade Simmons. Between Prado, Janish, and Ahmed, we would figure out SS.
Prado can play SS better than half the starting SSs in the game. You can look up his fielding stats at SS last year. We could sign a FA, something.
Stanton for Simmons? I’d bite my lip and do it.

Go BJ!!!

Mainly, though, as a fan, it’s frustrating!

DOB,
Has FW considered trading with Milwaukee for Norichika Aoki as an under-the-radar leadoff man? I know he’s from Japan, and only played here 1 yr, but I was pretty impressed with his OBP, SLG, and SB’s.
I hear they’re looking for pitching, and I wonder if we could trade some of our bullpen depth (Walden, a lefty reliever, Gearrin, etc.) for him.
It also makes me wonder if FW may have been too quick to trade Hanson, and we could have possibly filled our leadoff void thru dealing him.
What are your thoughts on this,

It’s not always about the concussions, its also about the brains inability to heal correctly after taking a number of violent hits within a period of time. It can at times exacerbate what was already there or it can completely alter a person. We won’t know if any of this is the case until they are able to look at his brain and given the way he died I don’t know if thats even a possibility. Point is nobody knows right now.

Sadly, I think the cynics are using Belcher to get at football – to make the game the cause for his crime and death. There’s a growing anti-football sentiment in some segments of society. I think those segments are latching onto the Belcher tragedy to advance their arguments.

Trader Jack-
the problem with that is that, regardless of why someone would do things like that, it paints a bad picture for them- acting like a petulant child and throwing temper tantrums to get what you want? Not the kind of guy I would want on my team, no matter how good he is- what happens if things start going bad with his new team? Will he act the same way? (I don’t think anything like that would ever enter Stanton’s mind- he seems like a classy kid…at least, I hope it wouldn’t)

If the allegations are true, what we can surmise is that Belcher’s actions the night before likely led to a domestic dispute that escalated to the point of Belcher resorting to deadly force. Domestic violence happens across the nation and not as a result of one or another party suffering concussions. Some of that violence is deadly.
