Now that we have Upton (although I was hoping for Kate), and it we can’t get Span, I’m all for Victorino until Gattis is ready for a shot. The Reaper should do just fine as leadoff in Left and he plays pretty good D.
I’m not thrilled with Upton because visions of Uggla keep dancing in my head every time I think of him, but hopefully he’ll work out. Surely Fredi will keep the two of them separated in the lineup, unlike the McCann/Uggla thing he did all season which created a huge black hole.
Good thing is, there are a lot of positive comments from Rays fans about Upton under the story of the signing at the MLB site. That makes me feel a bit more optimistic.
oh hum. I’d get excited if I thought this put the team over the top. It doesn’t. I have my doubts it even gets this team halfway back to where it was last season, and that wasn’t even enough. Not too inspiring. I still fail to see the Braves winning the WS over the course of this contract. Perhaps something better comes along, but… whatever.
I’d be happier if they shot Schafer during the press conference.
@George, Watch. Bourn will be paid more. And there is probably a good chance the Braves offered the same deal to Bourn. Boras is asking for a lot more.
Unless we’re getting Justin Upton, we won’t be ahead of last year… unless the pitching staff is really really good all year and JHey/Freeman go berserk. He could ask for a trade to be with his brother now, but the DBacks don’t have to honor. But I’d work to try to get him.
I am a big fan of old school wrestling, but I still watch it today. I loved the nWo angle when it first started, but it got old once WCW started losing guys like Eddie, Benoit, Malenko and so on. However, despite WCW’s folding, they had a lot of hot angles at the time. I liked the New Generation Era too, about early 90s, when HBK/Bret went from mid card status to the main event.
Today’s wrestling, I like the stuff that reminds me of the old school ones. CM Punk, Bobby Roode, Dolph Ziggler and so on. Speaking of, you should keep your eyes on The Shield (the new group formed recently as they attacked Ryback), which consists of Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns. It reminds me of a throwback group.
Dean Ambrose (Jon Moxley on the independent circuit of wrestling) is going to be the star of the group, but Seth Rollins (Tyler Black on the indies) and Roman Reigns (brother of Rosey from Hurricane/Rosey team) aren’t too shabby and they have qualities of their own.
I love baseball (mainly braves, but like rays and A’s too), football and pro wrestling.
Gordon would be good as well… leadoff hitter, helps keep our LF defense strong, maybe he can range into CF as well. I’d take him. Teheran, Spruill/Gilmartin, +1.
And Teheran is helping his trade value tonight… Top Prospect Alert @MinorLeagueBlog
#Braves Julio Teheran has not allowed a hit through 4IP tonight in the Dominican Winter League
For all those complaining about how many solo HRs that BJ will hit, he has no control over whether they are solo or multi-run HRs. All he can do is work on hitting the HR, how many runners are/aren’t on base is not his fault or success. As far as evaluating his performance, I don’t care if he hits nothing but 30 solo shots. From a Braves fan standpoint, I hope the other hitters in front of him work it out that they hit well enough to make them all GS.
No problem with getting Victorino if the $$$$$$$$$$$ is there — I really have no idea what a fair contract is.
If Johnny Gomes is getting 5 mil a yr an everyday OF has to be worth at least 9 or 10 mil now. That is why I think the BJ deal has great potential value. Crazy as it sounds it really does.
Someone is going to pay Bourn 20 mil per before this is done — it will be late maybe after the first of the yr. That is how Boras works.
I like the Upton signing mainly becaus we needed a big righhanded bat to go between the two leftys in the middle of the lineup. I will miss Bourne, but anything that makes this team less lefthanded is a plus.
It will benefit Heyward and Freeman (McCann, too)
I would be OK with Victorino or Fowler in left, not Span
I think a lot of the “I’m from Tampa,” or “I’ve seen him play every game,” and “BJ sucks,” or “he is clubhouse poison,” or “he has a bad attitude and never hustles,” and “take my word for it you guys are getting a load of trouble,” all of that has been very, shall we say, “not random.”
The local Tampa posters you refer to I think would get you a more random sample, and a more accurate sample, of what the “eye test” has revealed about BJ Upton.
This is what I’d be doing, now that BJ is coming to Atlanta.
Sign Victorino for LF (hold onto prospects in case a need arises later in the season for whatever reason or even in the future), re-sign Reed Johnson and Chad Durbin, sign or trade for an impact arm for in the bullpen and then get another solid bench piece.
Tehran has thrown 4 hitless innings!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh my God!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats on your new deal @BJUPTON2! #Tomahawk choppin next year…have a good off-season
Come join him…. 2years, 12mil, 3rd year option maybe.
I guess I can understand keeping the prospects. We can use them to trade for an ace next winter (Price?), a 2B if they decide to move Uggla, or go after a LF yet again. But I’d just love to have that longterm solution out there this season. But hey, we got 1 for CF, so why complain? LF, C, and SP will probably be our big concerns next winter.
With the money we have left, we can probably afford to overpay for a good RHRP arm, someone who’s trying to rebuild value. Soria, maybe. him? Now now….
I would tend to agree with you. While Upton’s numbers don’t look particularly impressive, I get the impression from the fans that are posting their goodbyes and well-wishes that he was a dynamic and well-liked player. Although I’m not super excited about the signing, he does have my complete support as the newest Brave and I wish him much success here in Atlanta.
I’d move Teheran for Gordon or Justin… certainly before I traded Delgado though.
As for RH reliever, Jordan Walden of the Angels is said to be available as well. I really like that kid. Walk rate is “high”, near 4.0/9 like JV, but he throws heat and Ks a lot
I think I am toward the pro-BJ end of the spectrum, but only a bit compared to you. The more I looked at it, the more confused I got about his merit. However, at the end, I had a gut feeling that I was going to be disappointed if Philly signed him and we were left looking for second choices. Anyone who says it’s an obviously great or obviously stupid move loses a lot of credibility with me.
My brother in Charlotte heard the ESPN update on the trade, and he reports that some analyst, reacting to the 5/75 contract amount, said something about Philly being upset when they hear that number. The implication was that Philly had offered more money. If true, perhaps that also says something about BJ.
Half the ACC used to be the Big East… UL is a very good school, both academically and athletically. I read somewhere that athletically they are the only school in the last 5 or so years that have had their women bball, men football, men basketball, men soccer, men baseball, in their respective tourneys–solid. Not to mention Louisville, Ky has been the number 1 Mens bball tv market for 10 straight years (thanks to both UK and UL). The ACC got a serious upgrade replacing Maryland–good for them.
I’m a white Georgia cracker, born here in Atlanta in 1956, and I think you’re wrong. If you’re right, it’s not just Terrance Moore and Hank Aaron in on the conspiracy, it’s the entire baseball establishment which pretty much across the board rated Upton as one of the top 3, 4 or 5 free agents on the market this year.
I’d love to know what the Phillies offered him! I was just reading a story about the Phillies’ attempts to sign him, but there’s no mention of the terms. I doubt we’ll ever know.
Putting myself in his place, though, I’d want to go to a young team on the rise versus an aging team in decline if the dollars were close.
Old man, I am African American and if you don’t think that race played a part in this signing then you are not being realistic. — Race Card
If you’re an African American, then I’m a Jupiterian-Saturnan.
Only a messed-up white dude would make a post like that. Someone that just wants to stir up a little excitement, on here, because he has, absolutely, no other life.
Signing another lefthanded hitter like Span would hurt the numbers of Heyward and Freeman (McCann, too). We’d see more lefty pitching again (we led the NL in that category again), and it hurts J-Hey and Freddy’s power numbers especially.
Ok, Span can hit lefhanded pitching, that is not my point.
I’m still wrapping my head around the Bill James OPS projections for BJ and Bourn–765 versus 707.
James knows more about baseball in his sphincter than I know in my whole body. I wonder if some people don’t start to wonder about Bourn’s offensive projections next year and beyond, and if Boras really pushes his negotiations into next year, maybe Bourn will get a big dose of disappointment, aka, free agent remorse.
If I’m KC, I want to deal Gordon and bring up Myers to play for cheap. There is so much hype about Myers, the fans would be OK with Gordon going if they saw it making room for Myers.
Gordon is a real under the radar sort of talent. Partly because of where he plays he gets very little media exposure. I think his contract calls for 6.5, 10.5, 12.5. If we can stomach that much salary we need to look at him very hard as a trade target.
Look, I agree with you up to a point. I just think it’s icing on the cake. I don’t think they were looking at two guys who were grading out the same, and they went with the black guy. I think, rightly or wrongly, Upton was they guy they wanted on a purely baseball basis, even if he was blue.
I think it is a great thing that Heyward and BJ are playing in my hometown where there is a large A-A population. I don’t want a lilly white team playing here to be honest. But this was purely a baseball decision. Again, two guys grading out totally equal at the same price, maybe it plays a role, but that is a very rare situation I would think, and NOT the situation the Braves faced.
we absolutely need to look at Gordon as a possible trade target. The salary I think we can swallow. The cost of prospects of ML pitching will likely be what is prohibitve
Nolie been gone for 5-6 days it seems… hope he’s alright. I think he was just displeased that the Braves were couting BJ. He’s less a fan of his than I am.
The only reason I hold out hope on Gordon is that KC would be unloading salary and keeping their “Jason Heyward” type player–Myers. So maybe they would actually want substantially less for Gordon versus Myers.
But dang, he sure looks like a perfect fit, except for being left handed. Gold Glove, lead off hitter, 879 and 822 ops the past 2 years. His L/R OPS split is about 700/825 for his career, which is not terrible.
Nolie been gone for 5-6 days it seems… hope he’s alright. I think he was just displeased that the Braves were courting BJ. He’s less a fan of his than I am. — TOBF
I hope you’re right, but I seriously doubt it. I think it would take a hell of a lot more than that to keep nolie from posting.
He puts up with Vales & Dentz and their 200 different names per blog… trying to make a joke of this place.
I doubt the Braves chasing Upton would do it.

Old man race still plays a big part in sports. People just don’t want to admit it for fear of saying something that is not PC.

I’m a white Georgia cracker, born here in Atlanta in 1956, and I think you’re wrong. If you’re right, it’s not just Terrance Moore and Hank Aaron in on the conspiracy, it’s the entire baseball establishment which pretty much across the board rated Upton as one of the top 3, 4 or 5 free agents on the market this year.

old man,
I’d love to know what the Phillies offered him! I was just reading a story about the Phillies’ attempts to sign him, but there’s no mention of the terms. I doubt we’ll ever know.
Putting myself in his place, though, I’d want to go to a young team on the rise versus an aging team in decline if the dollars were close.

Brian:
The only reason I hold out hope on Gordon is that KC would be unloading salary and keeping their “Jason Heyward” type player–Myers. So maybe they would actually want substantially less for Gordon versus Myers.
But dang, he sure looks like a perfect fit, except for being left handed. Gold Glove, lead off hitter, 879 and 822 ops the past 2 years. His L/R OPS split is about 700/825 for his career, which is not terrible.

I hope you’re right, but I seriously doubt it. I think it would take a hell of a lot more than that to keep nolie from posting.
He puts up with Vales & Dentz and their 200 different names per blog… trying to make a joke of this place.
I doubt the Braves chasing Upton would do it.
