Bobby H — Baseball is just not clicking with the younger generation — that concerns me.
College Footbal is great — I never really appreciated it till I moved South.
I do get why Southerners love college football, but there are other sports out there. And in absoluety no way do I want to disrespect Southerners’ love for College Football — but lets get behind our Braves. And the Hawks and Falcons.
SEC probably wouldn’t be looking for FSU if they wanted to go to 16 teams… already have a market in Florida. If they were going to steal from the ACC, they would probably want Va Tech to get in to Virginia. If I was leading the SEC, however, there really isn’t any major football programs that need to be lured….they’re pretty good in football and baseball. If I were leading, I’d do anything and everything to bring in Duke and North Carolina. The SEC would own the TV rating in football and basetball then. Duke and North Carolina would benefit from more $ in the SEC and EVERYBODY benefits getting to see UK, Duke, and Carolina playing each other at least one time a year in basketball.
I think baseball might actually benefit from shorter seasons–don’t want the baseball season to start during March Madness and don’t want the end of the season to be during the beginning of football.
I’m just trying to find FSU a way out of the ACC… the division is pretty bad for football. Our basketball team is decent. But you’re likely right, the SEC doesn’t need us.
A&M was a good pickup… getting in to Texas was great for the SEC. Getting UM felt like team they added just keep conference at an even number to so that they wouldn’t lose A&M. The SEC would have been much better off adding Kansas… for the same exact reasons they should try to add Duke/UNC.
“I think baseball might actually benefit from shorter seasons–don’t want the baseball season to start during March Madness and don’t want the end of the season to be during the beginning of football.”
I agree that it starts too soon — you cannot help it going into the football season some but a 144 to 150 game schedule would do some good.
You sort of have to keep ST at what it is so the pitchers can get their workk in. Only the hard core baseball fans really care much about ST anyways — sometimes its a Florida vacation in March.
I would not do any playoff expanding, even with the WC game what it is. Best of 3 maximum. And I would like the LCS to be 5 instead of 7, but $$$$$$$$$$ will not let that happen.
I wish all playoff series were best of 5 except for the NBA final, Stanley Cup final and WS, that can be 7. Not including football of course — that is always one and out.
I agree Heath. TAMU was a good pickup, they fit right in for football, and the SEC reaches into the Texas market. I just think that there had to be a better option than Mizzou, especially to slot into the SEC East. New market is fine, but they don’t do much for the SEC on the field.
Agree completely on UM… not sure they do much for SEC financially or on the field/court either. SEC needs star power on the court now, not on the gridiron. In fact, you could argue that adding any more top-flight football programs to the SEC would be bad for them. If you add enough tough teams (FSU and Va Tech for example) at some point, they best teams will always have 1 loss or even 2 losses and loss teams in the chase for the title. They can only help themselves by adding strong roundball programs now. Need to get UNC and Duke.
The braves pursuit of BJ Upton is in part to acquire another African American player. With the loss of Bourn, Jason would be the lone African American player on the team. In a city with a large population of African Americans the braves feel the need to have players to draw the interest of the community.
Hank Aaron among others have talked a lot about the decline of numbers of African American players.
This is not a racist statement but I am sure some will see it that way.
Having UM to get access to the STL market is OK. If the SEC wants to create a 16-team league that dominates the national tv markets as well as positions themselves to dominate on the court/field all year, then they need to add UNC/Duke and move UM to the western division.
MLBTR reporting Upton is looking to make his decision this week. Hopefully Phillies WAY over spend and we get guys that are less sexy but actually produce (sign Swisher and trade for Span).

Heath – the fun thing for me with BIG FLIPPIN’ TIME college football is, I am completely indifferent – I am happy with my guys in the FCS…just enjoy the blind fealty from everyone who shares the belief that they are all that matters in the entire world…
Lee – like I have a deep seated interest in USC – nice try at attempting to say something intellectually interesting, but you are too drunk on loving a conference that has 3 good teams but thinks they are the top 14 trams in the country…no one here confusing you with a wiz…
another great dayhas come and gone. and i used no oxygen today. you cannot imagine how good it felt to not have my tether line attached. getting stronger instead of weaker. for an old hermit i made aloyt of church prayer lists/ anyway i beat my first expiration date and they e ven through in an extra 18 months to go now since i didnt die like they said i would in the first 6 months after diagnosos
Lee – self-fulfilling prophecy, given the media self-flagellation over the conference, but, are you also always rooting for NL East teams as if they are your flesh and blood, like the inbred SEC seems to engender in the faithful?
Duke has looked good early this year so far. In a year where the over-all talent is a little less than last year’s… Duke’s experience and good shooting could take them pretty far this year. I don’t like what I’ve seen at all from my Cats this year. Still not playing defense and the Ryan Harrow transfer has not panned out. (No one is admitting it, but he looks like the light is just to bright at UK for him right now.)

Lee in S GA: I agree on Brent “Bucky Beaver” Musswhacker …I don’t understand why he is still their number 1 announcer after all these years, there are much better choices out there.

Sign Swisher and trade for Span
I’ll take that Heath and so will most of the blog.
A BJ sign is not going to get universal love on this blog. If he were to get off to a slow start I would not want to be in his shoes.
He should be 30/30 in Philly.
