Because you deliver a good chunk of content that’s just worth reading. The forum has gotten too far away from the notion that this isn’t a baseball blog, but rather a blog with a unifying theme of baseball. Too many folks here want to discuss nothing but baseball. And, frankly, the baseball discussion is one of the lesser reasons I haunt this place. It’s a much better experience when humor and music and BBQ and banana pudding take up a goodly chunk of the space. We don’t have as much of that non-baseball stuff as once we did.

It is due to the inability for some to fathom unquantifiable measures of preference. If no deeply dug value can be extracted, it apparently isn’t worth discussing. I believe the answer to all of our problems lies with one team. Minnesota has Span, Willingham, and Doumit and in need of pitching. We could easily give them a package of talent that will leave us still in good shape and fill all of our needs for at least three seasons for around ten million. I do get worn out with it and debate just moving on, but I CAN see where my group digs would get a bit old. Would that the converse could be similarly perceived…
What’s the WAR for good BBQ? Or the BABiP? And who cares?
This is a very important question that deserves our attention. First off, I think the metric to use would be TAS (Taste Above Sonny’s). We use Sonny’s since it’s pretty much the lowest form of BBQ acceptable for human consumption. I think we’ll need to incorporate some type of positional adjustments into the formula, since it’d be unfair to compare brisket with pulled pork, or Boston butt with ribs. You’d also have to come up with something to account for differences in vinegar based or mustard based sauce.
No matter what the formula, I’m fairly sure that Community Q in Decatur will come out on top. Best in the Atlanta area by far.
he eight potential compensation free agents, listed in the order in which their former clubs’ draft picks would fall at the end of the first round:
Cardinals,Rays,Rangers,Braves,Yankees,Nationals
Very small chance the Yankees lose all of their players. But, they will have a few high draft picks and this new system shortens the total length of first round/comp round from years past… which bumps up talent in the later rounds
This makes a lot of sense. Two years, $26 million like Beltran got last year. I’d probably go a bit lower on that though – like 2/$23 – but that’s not a huge difference.
The Yankees are privately pleased that Soriano opted out of his $14MM salary for next season. They’ll allocate those dollars elsewhere and could use a portion of it on a reliever to replace Soriano.
Ha! It’ll crack me up if Soriano screws himself again with his qual/arb dealings.
Can the Braves end up with 2 Top 30 picks? I think so, if every free agent left their team and signed with a team in the 11-31 range, I believe. Obviously the chances are slim that it would happen.
That’s gotta be tough to do… no Twitter, no email, text, videos, sports news…..
I used to go stay at a friends stilt house in Biscayne Bay fairly often. Load up the boat with supplies, food, drinks, all that. Stay for several days at a time….. no electricity, no phones, nothing…… well the house was wider and you could run a generator, we never did. Sleep out on the dock at night, watching the lights of Miami across the bay.
Chum up sharks at night to fish, jump of the dock in the mornings to bath……….. Loved it, miss it
Yeah, I agree nolie. I think he’s going to get it – but not the player Beltran is at all. That was such a great signing by the Cardinals. They are stacked.
Buster_ESPN Buster Olney
In this year’s FA market, the strong early push is for the best one-year deals — because of a stagnant trade market, high FA prices.
Isn’t this every year? I mean, they said the early deadlines were suppose to speed up the hot stove season – but that never is the case and I didn’t expect it to be again this year.
In 63 appearances out of the bullpen this season, Kimbrel went 3-1 with a 1.01 ERA, converting 42 of 45 save opportunities. Those are obviously outstanding numbers, but dig a little deeper to see where Kimbrel holds up in history (counting only those who worked at least 40 innings in a single season):
• Kimbrel worked 62 2/3 innings and struck out 116. That’s a 16.7 strikeouts-per-nine-innings ratio. The best in history.
• The opposition hit .128 off Kimbrel. That is the lowest such mark in history.
• Kimbrel allowed 3.88 hits per nine innings. That, too, is the lowest such mark in history.
• The opposition registered a .358 OPS off Kimbrel. That is the second lowest in history, and the lowest in 48 years.
• Kimbrel posted a 0.65 WHIP, the lowest ever for an NL reliever and the third lowest all-time, trailing only the 0.61 marks posted by Eckersley in 1989 and ‘90.
If you faced Kimbrel in 2012, you could basically flip a coin before walking into the batter’s box to determine whether or not you’d strike out. Of the 231 batters Kimbrel faced, 116 did. That’s the highest strikeout percentage (.502) in history.
Yeah, it ain’t the same. The Feds terminated the leases on those stilt houses. Florida used to give them out willy nilly. There was probably close to a hundred at one time, now maybe 8 or 10. Hurricanes wiped most of them out over the years.
My friend can still use his families old house, he just has to get permission and reserve it. The guys from Sea Hunt used to get together there to drink and play poker.

Been watching The Firm again, phil? Watch out for the albino dude.

And that’s something that I had never really gotten a handle on, previously. Thanks, Efrim.
I think the best we could do on a 1st rounder is now #20 overall – if ALL of the free agents are signed by a team in the 11-31 range. I think…..
Or Eee-frum. Whichever
Hah! Yup. That was another one. Too much emphasis on the E. It’s really F-from.

I think #20 and #27? I could be way off though.

In this year’s FA market, the strong early push is for the best one-year deals — because of a stagnant trade market, high FA prices.
Isn’t this every year? I mean, they said the early deadlines were suppose to speed up the hot stove season – but that never is the case and I didn’t expect it to be again this year.

Nice article about Kimbrel on MLB.com…

High school bats. High school bats. High school bats. (If I repeat it enough, it might come true…)
Preferably high school bats with a solid “hit” tool, not ambiguous “athlete” types that don’t have much baseball experience (looking at you, Lipka).
