I would have to say that Mr. Hunter is a bit peeved.
Now, having never walked in his shoes, I can’t say I totally blame him for mouthing off now and then about all things racist, certainly not if he’s had to produce ID at gunpoint, but at some point, that kind of talk just falls on deaf ears. I feel for the guy, but if he would just start posting here, you guys could toughen him up big time with the way you rant and rave about negativity.
Maybe G Stanton (aka “Mike”) was advised by his agent to use his more “American Friendly” name…or maybe for any number of reasons. He DID decide that he wanted to use his other REAL name, in keeping with his cultural background. His preferenced…and I don’t see ANYTHING Dumb about it. My nephew, known by his middle name all his life, decided in college to start using his first name. HIS CHOICE. I don’t see the controversy…not at all.
Again, if you are biased, don’t know how to interpret data or don’t know what data matters in determining player value, you might be confused in to thinking Cabrera is the MVP.
Cabrera will be the MVP
Yes, I expect that as well because all too many voters fall in to the above category of people.
Ask front office folks which player was more valuable and you’ll get a different answer than how the vote will likely turn out. Buster Olney said as much. The folks who are used to valuating and evaluating players favor Trout. The folks enamored with the Triple Crown and whether a player and his teammates are good enough to make the playoffs favor Cabrera.
I know you are. You just don’t have that internal switch that says “Stop”, when you’ve made the point. As it would have been, at the words “…some books and magazines as well.” Instead, fully the last half of that post has absolutely nothing to do with making the case for Trout, and exists only to throw ill-advised snark at a contrary opinion. Totally unnecessary and counter-productive to actually making your argument.
Exactly Raleigh. My wife, of Hispanic descent, constantly has to correct people on the pronunciation of her name to the point where it became so annoying that she no longer corrects people. Unfortunately for her, our last name is similarly butchered to the point where I stopped correcting people years ago.
sooooo, if somebody at the office all of a sudden went from being called Mike, to wanting to be called Giancarlo, you would just fall right in line and not even joke about it behind the guy’s back? COME ON! Be realistic, that is absolutely absurd and you know it…
Can we please put this Willingham talk to rest, DOB? I know he’s your favorite player, like EVARRRR, but really, he’s pretty much a middle of the road, little power outfielder. We need a thumper bad. — Matt the Brave
“We”? Do you need to work in unison with others? You can put it to rest anytime that pleases you.
Oh, and a thumper, huh? How many major league players totaled more homers and/or RBIs over the past two seasons than Willingham? Nevermind how many did it while playing half a season in a pitchers’ park, just how many did it, period? Or what do you mean by thumper, if not a guy who hits home runs and drives in runs?
After you answer that, feel free to put the Willingham talk to rest, Matt the Brave. Or, feel free to put it to rest without answering it, if that’s easier.

the “regulars” on this blog kill me. You guys to a man all act so smug and superior about every little thing and yet any time someone comes on here and offers a view with which you disagree you act as though THAT view is the narrow one. A lot of adults in this world need to do some inward looking and stop hiding behind a faceless computer screen to be as mean and arrogant to others as they want on a daily basis, it’s not a healthy lifestyle. I said it was dumb for a grown man to change his name for anything other than safety (legal, stage, screen, pen names, etc.) but the blog regulars make me out to be some sort of bigot for what would be a universally accepted viewpoint. While I disagree since a person can do as he or she pleases about their name, you can forget coming on this blog expecting to be treated with tons of respect.
Ain’t happening, whether one deserves it or not. Smug and superior would actually be a good name for this place! lol
So we lose D. Ross and keep a broken down B. McCann? This just makes the Braves even more irrelevant. I hope I can find something more interesting than wasting time watching them next year.
Comment From MFG
So, if the answer isn’t “Andrelton Simmons,” then what is Mike Olt’s trade value?
12:11
Dave Cameron: A lot less than an everyday shortstop who showed offensive promise in the big leagues and is younger to boot. That rumored offer doesn’t make any sense – there had to be something else going to ATL, or else JD just decided to hope Frank Wren had been drinking.
ncscoots, I’m zealous about truth, justice…all that good stuff. Maybe I’m supposed to be ashamed of that.
I don’t have a dog in the AL MVP fight, as they say, except the whole truth, justice thing. Sure there are obviously much bigger injustices in the world and bigger violations of truth in the world than voting the wrong guy the MVP, but this is a lot more fun to discuss than the more serious matters and the answer is much more obvious and easy to arrive at.
If rumors are true, I am kind of glad Torii Hunter not coming to Braves. Although I think he is a good player, I imagine his numbers will be a little different not hitting between Trout and Pujols.
you can forget coming on this blog expecting to be treated with tons of respect. Ain’t happening, whether one deserves it or not. Smug and superior would actually be a good name for this place!
It makes me sad to see you feel so, phil.
Respect is earned, by the way, not “deserved”. Seeing as how we are all anonymous here, about the only way one can determine whether a poster earns that respect is by their contributions.
That’s assuming, of course, that a poster actually gives a damn about validation from a bunch of faceless, nameless strangers. Most of us don’t, so the whole “respect” thing is pretty frickin’ moot.
Earlier, I was all for adding Torii Hunter. But after some of the things I have heard, I am kinda thinking he is in for a big drop off in the next year or two.
I’d prefer Cody Ross over Hunter. I’d pay him 3 years and around 25 mil.
That is if Willingham is not available.
But I am still holding out for David Wright OR Chase Headley.
I may be wrong, and I’m certain you’ll say I am, but I doubt you would have repeatedly posted your thoughts on the matter had he been changing the other direction, from Guillermo to Mike.
ncscoots, anything I type here, I wouldn’t be afraid to say/type to a close friend. We shouldn’t be afraid of a spirited or even a heated debate, as long as it doesn’t get vile and nasty.
DS1 – yeah, I too would love Wright, I know its not happening, but would set us up nicely on offence for awhile. I keep hearing Headley, but is there anything legit about him being available?

It’s deserved when earned. Your point is a good one. You aren’t a smug and arrogant sort most of the time. I say most because we all can come across that way, now and then. Some revel in it and ooze it in every word they utter.
But you’re ultimately right. Nameless, faceless strangers, so who gives a damn.
But some do. I do sometimes myself because i like a fair number of you faceless loons. Not always fun to be blasted for just stating an opinion, no matter how negative it might be.
I’ve noticed a lot of names here today I don’t recognize. mostly earlier on, but still. and nothing against it, of course, unless they’re that Dentz guy you folks always refer back to….
Very optimistic about Juan Francisco in ‘13, assuming he gets a chance to play. Rather than see Frank Wren spend a little bit here on a left fielder and a little bit there on a center fielder, I’d rather see him spend a lot on a center fielder, just in case Prado returns to left. Perhaps getting Reed Johnson back as an insurance policy wouldn’t hurt, though…
Ain’t happening, whether one deserves it or not. Smug and superior would actually be a good name for this place! lol phil

personally I think most of the posters who get ripped here are the ones who make it clear by their language and attitude that they are more interested in controversy and irritating the regulars than they are in anything else, and that their contrary opinions have that mostly in mind. There is no question but that people Like Brian D, and Since 80s among many others are looking for confrontation, they are likely to find it
phil you are constantly ripping the folks on this blog, you just don’t do it by specific name , you use a more passive-aggressive manner indicating that most regulars are mean to newbies., but you damn sure are insulting.
For those curious about Justin Upton’s home/road splits, they are pretty severe.
Upton has .307 avg., 67 homers, .389 OBP, .548 slugging (.937 OPS) in 364 games at Chase Field. In 367 road games, he has a .250 average, 41 homers, .325 OBP, .406 slugging ( .731 OPS).
In 2012, he hit .313 with a .924 OPS at home, .252 with a .670 OPS on the road.
In his career-best season in 2011, when he was 4th on the MVP ballot, he hit .333 with 20 homers, .411 OBP and .622 slugging (1.033 OPS) at home, and .246 with 11 homers, .328 OBP and .429 slugging (.757 OPS) on the road. He doesn’t have double-digit homers at any road ballpark (one homer and .293 average in 58 at-bats at Turner Field).
Scoots, your 2:13 was downright hilarious…..nice job!
80- DUH! Why do you think I have a copyright behind my blogger name…..if someone steals it I have the right to pound their face in under the guise of gimmick infringement
I don’t know what the hell your problem is with me rich, until the other night we had hardly ever even conversed, but you can sure as hell stick your attitude where the sun doesn’t shine you grouchy old fool who seems unable to handle someone disagreeing with their senile posts. You should stick to listing player’s numbers which is hard for even you to screw up
DOB, I really hope we hang on to both Delgado and Teheran. We would be overpaying for D Span giving up either of those guys..They still have upside, and Randall does have four good pitches, and if he can throw em for strikes….He can be a number 2 in any rotation.
For those curious about Justin Upton’s home/road splits, they are pretty severe.
Definitely a concern with Upton. Teams are probably banking on him putting it all together during his prime years, which they’ll have some control of with his current deal.

As for irritating the regulars, consider Thanksgiving next week and that relative or two that, no matter what one does or says, will still get pissed about it and make everyone uncomfortable in the process.
We have a fair number of those relatives right here on the ole blog. They were born irritated. Not that there’s anything wrong with it, if you like being corrected or hearing about your flaws most every day!

Assuming the Braves get Spann, and miss out on Hunter, who else would be on their list of targets for LF (or 3B should they play Prado there)?
And am I wrong for assuming they would not fill both spots via trade?

the “regulars” on this blog kill me. To all of you I say this: GROW UP….

While I disagree since a person can do as he or she pleases about their name, you can forget coming on this blog expecting to be treated with tons of respect.
Ain’t happening, whether one deserves it or not. Smug and superior would actually be a good name for this place! lol

Just saw this in Dave Cameron’s Fangraphs chat:
