If we sign BJ, it’s pretty clear he will be in CF, right?

“……Juan Francisco hit a two-run homer tonight for Licey in the Dominican Winter League…..”
Thanx for the correction DAVE. The box had him down for 2-4, 2 HR and 2 RBI.
Nonetheless, at .347 BA, he’s performing better as the winter session grinds along.
And i missed CHRISTIAN BETHANCOURT’s line at the bottom of the LICEY scores. He went 2-4 also raising his average to .286 with a double . Good to see him stirring at the plate.

Shaun is not a relativist, he is an absolutist. he is absolutely right even when arguing with a relative…..
Nice one, nolie!

Over an hour between blog posts, must be some kind of record, excluding overnight.

John Kruk @JohnKruk_ESPN
50 day suspension…full share in the post season…2 year contract with a raise…that should keep players from using…unbelievable…
November 17th, 20129:05 am
Yep… a shame. We’d need a good defender in LF
November 17th, 20129:06 am
Mariners out on Hamilton… another suitor gone.
Also from Rosenthal, the Marlins made verbal promises to Jose Reyes and Mark Buehrle that neither would be traded when Miami was courting the two as free agents last winter. The promises were made in place of formal no-trade clauses, which the Marlins don’t hand out as a matter of club policy. Reyes and Buehrle, of course, were traded to the Blue Jays on Tuesday as part of the big 12-player deal that has yet to be officially confirmed by the league.
November 17th, 20129:08 am
Great defenders in left and right could shrink center enough to help.
November 17th, 20129:11 am
Also, Simmons does a good job of taking care of short left and short center.
November 17th, 20129:12 am
Maybe a more important question–did Juan have any strikeouts????
November 17th, 20129:14 am
Well, it might not keep players from using, but Melky likely lost – at the very least – millions if not ten million or more on his latest contract.

“Promises? Who promised? When? I think you misunderstood. Let’s get the contract out. Nope. Not there. Did the pen run out of ink? No, ’cause your signature is right here. See?”

Ef is more like shaun or Tobf socially.
What. A. Herb.
I party, uga. I rage.

I was wondering how many posts Shaun was making on the ‘ol blog about the AL MVP race. Shaun, of course things other than stats contribute to the term “value” Did it add “value” to the Tigers when Miggy openly and without distraction moved to 3B so they could trade for Prince? Does it diminish “value” to a team when, say a great player like Manny (in his prime) shoves office workers to the ground, fights with teammates in the dugout and becomes such a distraction that the front office felt they needed to deal him away no matter what?
Do stats play a vital role? Of course. The are the most important piece. I would argue that performing in the heat of a pennant race in September is more valuable to the team than dominating in April (as an example, not as an argument in the Trout vs. Miggy debate).
They both were great and I would have understood if Trout won the award. But to dismiss what Miggy accomplished this year and to say he wasn’t deserving and to say value is completely objective with no subjectivity is, well…very Shaunesque. Dude, you are probably one of the brighter people I have come across on the ‘ol blog, but man, quit beating the drum every once in awhile, especially when you are wrong.
November 17th, 201210:02 am
Fransisco is having a Winter. Certainly would be nice if he is displaying what the future holds. He is working out, losing weight and swinging a very hot bat. What he is doing is opening some eyes and is batting 4th on his team. Good job Juan and keep it up.
November 17th, 201210:04 am
Juan was 2-4 with 2 HR and 2 RBI last night but they have not yet updated his totals in the link above.
November 17th, 201210:06 am
I get into it with Efrim as much as anyone, but him like Shaun or TOBF? Not even.
Efrim can be reasonable – Shaun can’t. Efrim can also deal with reality (at least most of the time) – TOBF does not have a concept of what reality might be.
November 17th, 201210:11 am
The Braves should be very proactive at signing BJ Upton and looking to Texas in a trade for Olt that would also net us Gentry. Olt possibly might be ready as early as next season to man the duties at 3rd allowing us to keep Prado in LF and with Gentry giving us a very effective 4th outfielder that can play all 3 outfield spots. Otherwise if Olt isn’t ready to begin the season, we could move Prado to 3rd, Gentry to leadoff and place him either in CF or LF which would give us probably the best defensive outfield in the game with Gentry, Upton and Heyward.
November 17th, 201210:13 am
Francisco with 10 RBI and 11 K. I’ll take that ratio. I wouldn’t mind in the least haviung him strike out 150 times if he knocks in 125 or so.
November 17th, 201210:15 am
Of course Laird will be our opening day catcher – That’s not a prediction, it’s one of the reasons he wa acquired. And there’s no way Schafer opens in CF for the Braves.
November 17th, 201210:17 am
Uh Dexter care to place a wager on that?
November 17th, 201210:18 am
I would definitely like to see Juan continue to develop over the winter. That’s a pretty powerful bat in the lineup.
November 17th, 201210:19 am
Doesnt matter anyway. Shaun already knows hr, rbi, and BA of all 25 man roster as well as ERA and win totals for 2013. Just ask him .
November 17th, 201210:21 am
Lotsa lazy azz Oak and Hickory leaves in this world. There’s a bunch of them nut jobs just lying around on my yard waiting for a free ride. Forget it.
There is one way Laird won’t be our opening day catcher.. and that is if McCann makes some miraculous recovery over the winter. Otherwise, why wouldn’t Laird be?
November 17th, 201210:25 am
Morning Lew. Just curious do you have any plans on some artwork on Chipper? I would be interested in something if it happens. My Dad loved the Sid slid w/Skip I gave him a couple yrs. ago.
November 17th, 201210:26 am
Frank will get a couple of quality players. But, I am a little surprised that he seemingly had Hunter and BJ as his top tandem. I don’ think Bourn resigns, and if we don’t sign BJ; I think FW will pull off a trade for our CF.
November 17th, 201210:28 am
chip1960 – NO, I hadn’t planned on doing anything new. I still have access to the older ones I did in one form or another. Can’t afford to do another mass mailing, but if you have a good printer, I would be willing to send you jpegs of the ones I’ve done for you to print out yourself. Just email me at Lewhartman@comcast.net and let me know who you are.
November 17th, 201210:30 am
Actually, that applies to anyone whop would like prints of my Braves’ artwork – just email me and I’ll send attachments.
I have been thinking of maybe doing a big Prado drawing and maybe a couple others and if people would be willing to get a print signed for me at ST, I’d be willing to send a couple copies for your won use as well.
November 17th, 201210:36 am
Lew, currently my plans are to attend ST.. I wouldn’t have a problem trying to obtain autographs for you but I’ll just have to let you know once I can set my plans.
November 17th, 201210:37 am
Lew, you don’t need to send me anything, but I will try and get a couple of things signed for you this ST if you would like.
Transplant – No problem – let me know if and when. I need to get myself working on new pieces. I took way too much time off with my eye issues.
November 17th, 201210:39 am
I’ll let you know something once my work schedule is addressed and I know for certain I’ll be able to attend ST. But plans are.. I really want to be there.
November 17th, 201210:40 am
I had one person ( a lurker, not a poster) who sent me a copy of the Sid Slid signed by Bream. He was at the Alumni Weekend celebration year before last. It’s a great piece. I only wish Skip could have signed it
November 17th, 201210:42 am
Plus, I plan on taking the boy with me.. and that would give him something to do. So I’m sure he’d have absolutely no issue. I think he makes it a challenge of his to be the spot light. So odds would be high on getting those autographs.
Transplant – Yeah, I always loved going to ST. Unfortunately, it won’t be feasible this year.
November 17th, 201210:44 am
I may have to get some pointers from you before I go, about when and where to be, to be successful. Too bad, you could swing things to make it.. we’d maybe finally get to meet.
November 17th, 201210:45 am
Looking forward to the annual spring training trip to Disney in March, always a great time. Also, just found out that I will be at the Opryland Hotel in December at the same time the Winter Meetings are taking place there, so that will be a fun experience.
November 17th, 201210:46 am
Yeah, I took my son with me for years. We had a great time.
November 17th, 201210:47 am
I just got back from Dallas yesterday and was having issues with my company wifi.. so I have been completely out of the loop. I wasn’t sure what I was going to find out the Braves have done during the week. I saw the mega deal Florida swung.. that’s pretty amazing they were willing to give away so much talent after just signing them. Although, I wish we could have gotten Johnson.
November 17th, 201210:48 am
I’d love to go, but my son’s illness last year and the big cut in pay they took at the Law School kind of hamstrung the budget and we just donlt have much extra right now.
November 17th, 201210:55 am
Well, hopefully things will turn around this coming year for you… I know I’d much appreciate a year absent of heartbreak and struggle. I get to find out in a couple of weeks if I’ve got Thyroid cancer.. that’s always a fun one.. not looking forward to needles being stuck in my throat but what can you do? I’d just like one year of no drama, the last couple have been really stressful.
November 17th, 201210:59 am
Transplant – We’re doing fine – just a lot less disposable income – we have the bills paid and my son is doing fine. Lots to be Thankful for when all is said and done. It could have been much worse and is for way too many people out there.
November 17th, 201211:04 am
One of my all-time favorite ST events…having dinner with Lew and his son. Great night. Wolfgan’s, right Lew?
Will be thinking of you AT.
November 17th, 201211:05 am
Jason – Yeah, it was. Last time we try to find someplace spur of the moment on Valentine’s Day when everyone is taking their Girlfriends out to Downtown Disney.
November 17th, 201211:08 am
If B.J. Upton goes to the Phillies, I’d bet Bourn winds up with the Nats.
And Melky the Cheat and Slob is likely winding up in Toronto for big bucks. No justice in this world.
November 17th, 201211:11 am
Lew, yup, it sure was busy. But, great time nonetheless. We need to meet up the next time you are down so I can repay the favor!
Great perspective, Lew. We can all learn from it.
November 17th, 201211:13 am
Transplant – Damn – you’re the second person I know who told me they might have thyroid cancewr today – had a buddy come by this morning – his wife was in for tests yesterday and they told her the same thing.
November 17th, 201211:16 am
Jeff R – Vermont is a very small state and after seeing all that happened to the rural rsidents last year with hurricane Irene – losing all they had in the world – and then seeing it happen again this year a bit further down the coast…….It’s really hard to feel sorry for a loss of income when so many have lost all the ever had.
November 17th, 201211:17 am
on the other hand I don’t think BJ will go 40/40 in this universe so I can be Fran Frownyface on that one
lol ok. I guess ur a comedian now though, huh?
November 17th, 201211:20 am
Lew, yeah.. they found lumps on it last month and they want to do the biopsy to decide what they are.
November 17th, 201211:21 am
Lew/Transplant…yeah what’s going on with the Thyroid lately…..i just have “Parathyroid” surgery last week….i’m better now (non-cancer) they found another small tumor in other gland to be check in a couple week.
November 17th, 201211:22 am
We might be government test subjects and don’t even know.. well. I’m out of here. Talk to you guys Monday.. Have a good weekend.
November 17th, 201211:23 am
Jersey Gil, is biopsy painful?
November 17th, 201211:24 am
Later. Have a good one.
Gil – I have no idea what’s going on sometimes. Just way too much luacy and hurt going around these days. One wonders if the Mayans may have had insight or something.
You’re right, Lew. So many people worse off in the world.
November 17th, 201211:25 am
My wife is having surgery on the 5th and she will be home for about 6 weeks for recovery.. my biopsy is on the 7th, so I’ll be driving myself to the appointment and I was planning on returning to work after it.. will that be a problem you think? they are going to biopsy the left and right lobe.
November 17th, 201211:26 am
I don’t know if BJ will pull a 40/40 year, but I’;d be pretty happy with 40 2B and 25 HR and a boost in OBP from him.
November 17th, 2012
The Braves should be very proactive at signing BJ Upton and looking to Texas in a trade for Olt that would also net us Gentry. I totally agree, would love Gentry and Olt.
November 17th, 201211:27 am
The surgery is fine …one day in the Hospital….My biopsy is schedule Dec 21…Dr say is a small one….in my case they found with my PTH (Calcium level in the blood) to high. My level went down after the surgery.
November 17th, 201211:29 am
a boost in OBP from him.
He’s a career .336 so hopefully he can at least recover to that point.
BraveDan, yeah I would think it would give us a lot of flexibility and options plus security in case of an injury.
November 17th, 201211:30 am
If that happens then we’ll probably end up with Denard Span and a 4th place finish.
November 17th, 201211:31 am
If he can put up a .335 OBP with a 25/25 season and 35 2B? I think I’d be happy with that.
November 17th, 201211:32 am
Jersey Gil, that’s good to hear.. yeah the doctor told me the 2 largest ones they found.. one on the left and one on the right, were small in comparison to what they usually see but that I had a lot of smaller ones throughout. They found mine during a routine physical and a sight increase of a certain hormone or something in the blood.
well, I’m really gone this time.. got to run.. you guys have a very good remaining weekend.
November 17th, 201211:37 am
Back to Baseball….any chance to the Braves get the Upton Brothers?I will love to see that…
November 17th, 201211:39 am
I agree. The Upton brothers have been my wish all along…within what I think is reasonable.
November 17th, 201211:43 am
It’s laughable how misanthropic some are, too. Never a dearth of doom and gloomers trying to convince the world to wear football helmets outside to protect from falling sky pieces. Rather drink the freaking kool aid than to become so warped that I refuse to believe in anything positive.
November 17th, 201211:44 am
Interesting notes on Juan.
He is getting tons of lefty pitching–more lefties than righties. Here is his line against righties:
With runners in scoring position, against L and R pitching, he is:
Of course, his K/BB percents, even against righties, are still 20% and 5%.
If he really is dropping some lbs, getting in shape, I’m sure Wren is following that closely.
The main thing is that he is seeing 58% lefty pitching, which is really odd, but it means his overall stats so far are skewed strongly against him.
If he had a 1.213 OPS in a platoon up here in ATL, could he still wear his hat crooked?
And I’m going to call it after two posts. Dexter is Lentz on the loose again.
November 17th, 201211:45 am

Was diagnosed with stage 3 hodgkins lymphoma in 2006, had to take 12 high dose chemo treatments usually every two weeks unless my white blood cell count was too low. It was pretty tough but just kept telling myself i had too much to live for and pretty much continued working the whole time except for a few bad days when i was real sick. Keeping a fighting mentality and not just giving up truly helped me i believe. The initial biopsy wasn’t too bad, but when they did a bone marrow test on me they hit a nerve and i about came unglued, it really hurt. All of my veins in my forearms pretty much collapsed and still are useless for drawing blood. If i would have had to have any more treatments they were going to have to put in a port. But so far all is good on my checkups, so just stay positive and fight the fight my friend if you have to.
November 17th, 201211:46 am
Jersey Gil – After hearing the DBacks’ owner on XM Home Plate the other day claiming they were not looking to trade J. Upton, I;d say it was a very long shot that any team sees both brothers playing together anytime soon – much less the Braves..
November 17th, 201211:47 am
The third post pretty well affirms his identity. It’s Lentz.
November 17th, 201211:50 am
November 17th, 2012
Yeah, the Rangers are my second favorite team and would love to see Gentry getting more playing time and i’m always on the lookout for good young players like Olt to add to our Braves.
November 17th, 201211:51 am
Even if the Braves start the season with Schafer in CF, Francisco at third, and Prado in LF with Laird being the no. 1 catcher for 30-40 games to start the season, I still see them finishing no worse than third.
Thank You Mets and Marlins for keeping us from falling from the downstairs room to the end of the plumbing system.
I would not put it past them not to spend that $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ during the off season & a suitable trade is 50/50 at this point. Hey, other teams should be asking high and outside of some mid level pitching potential, we really do not have that much to trade.
I see Delgado, Teheran and Gilmartin as mid range guys now and Hanson, while he has won he has his warts, he cannot last past July now.
FW ften makes a move during the season so all hope is not lost.
November 17th, 201212:01 pm
From last year, here were some major story lines:
Chipper finishes strong, retires as still ATL’s best hitter
Heyward back on track after horrid sophomore slump
Simmons stuns with glove, arm, and bat in MLB debut
Kimbrell breaks through as #1 MLB closer
Kris Medlen, from nowhere to #1 MLB starter in the second half
We had some negative ones too, but these are just examples of unpredictable positives. How about these:
BJ Upton rejuvenated by ATL, returns to rookie form
2010 version of Dan Uggla rakes in 2013
Lean, mean Juan Francisco crushes NL right handers
Unhittable Johnny Venter returns after one year “absence”
Braves can’t find spot for red hot rookie Ahmed
I’m not predicting that any of these will happen. My only point is that stuff happens, OK.? None of these things would be considered all that odd in baseball.
November 17th, 201212:04 pm
Dexter — I agree its nothing to brag about — there was a touch of sarcasim in my 11:51 post.
And I do have hopes of seeing the good Mc Cann and the Florida Marlins version of Uggla this comming yr.
I still like Uggla inspite of his grotesque slumps he has had — not giving up on him yet. Its not like he is mid to late 30’s.
November 17th, 201212:08 pm
“The Upton brothers have been my wish all along”
Pretty much my nightmare. BJ isn’t a very good player and is gonna cost as much as Bourn but will produce much less. Now if he is cheap around $8 million, sure. But .300 on base is just awful.
As for Justin. Guy has just too good of numbers at home and terrible numbers on the road to think that he’d be a great fit at Turner Field.
I’d rather overpay for Bourn than BJ Upton. Gosh one is just an overall much better player. Hopefully Michael gets a 100+ million contract and we don’t have to worry about what could’ve been.
November 17th, 201212:22 pm
If the Braves sign BJ Upton, that would pretty much end the trade discussions for Willingham, no? Braves would have to look to trade for Span or Fowler. If Upton goes elsewhere, it wouldn’t surprise me if Willingham became the new primary RH bat target for the Braves.
November 17th, 201212:24 pm
I think I’d prefer Fowler to Span – if a choice could be had. Span would be all right, though.
November 17th, 201212:25 pm
DOB, are you going to jason isbell at the roxy next week? — uga-brave
November 17th, 201212:32 pm
I, too would love to see the Upton brothers in ATL. We’d have to give up Simmons +++.
What would you be willing to give up?
BTW where in Jersey are you from? I lived in Bucks County, PA for 18 years.
November 17th, 201212:34 pm
Jersey Gil, not Jersey Girl.
November 17th, 201212:35 pm
Joey G – Where in Bucks County? I’m from Jamison – halfway between Willow Grove and Doylestown.
November 17th, 201212:36 pm
DOB—-Any specifics on the Laird deal other than 2 year deal? $$$$ ?
November 17th, 201212:38 pm
I just don’t see Bourn back with the Braves… so on that premise:
I’m pretty neutral on BJ Upton–I like the good and I dislike the bad for him equally. We need a RH bat and he could play either CF or LF, so signing him gives more options to the Braves for the other OF spot. With him, the Braves could trade for Span/Fowler and feel pretty decent about their OF additions. Could play any of those three in LF or CF and be satisfied.
Not signing him just makes it so much more difficult to fill out the roster to me. I’d stay from Victorino, Pagan is “OK” but I don’t think the Braves are going to pay what he wants either. The rest of the CFs… no thanks. That means you pretty much HAVE to trade for a CF and LF (or sign C Ross and trade for a CF).
November 17th, 201212:39 pm
I live in south Jersey,Cumberland county….Best combo for the Braves in the outfield will be Upton/Willimham….or Willimham/Pagan
November 17th, 201212:43 pm
I agree Bourn is the better player, but if BJ can get back to his career OBP of .335 or with the help of Walker a little higher, there is not a significant gap. Plus, I think BJ’s best years are ahead of him while Bourn’s may be behind. Bourn has a career OPS+ of 99 while BJ’s is 105.
Again, I would rather have Bourn, but a guy capable of 30/30 entering his prime is worth a shot…how costly of a shot, I am not sure.
Heath – Like I said last evening – never been a BJ Upton fan, but if they decide that’;s the way they need to go, I’ll just hope we come to love him for his offensive prowess and he becomes a sterling citizen while in ATlanta. I suppose we could do worse – he has talent and maybe he’ll achieve his potential, though I’m a bit leery it’s taken this long to have potential meet performance.
Fowler just seems like a good fit – decent player with youth on his side and an Atlantan (his wife, too). He could be a worthwhile acquisition.
November 17th, 201212:46 pm
My bad on Jersey Gil. I do know Jamison. Couple friends from there. I lived in Perkasie.
Worked in West Point, (Montgomery County), near North Wales. My wife worked in Doylestown.
Miss the area very much. Moved to Chicago area in ‘08.
November 17th, 201212:49 pm
Upton/Willingham will not be the combo next year in LF and CF… no lead-off guy on the team.
Willingham/Pagan is possible. Braves will likely have to sign one OF and trade for another so this is could be a likely result. I don’t think Braves will pay for Pagan though. I’d guess Upton/Span.
November 17th, 201212:50 pm
I will say we would give up some defense if we have BJ in CF and someone like Willingham in LF (who I would like to have). Hunter is still a good defensive corner OF. I would rather have Fowler/Willingham or a better defensive CF if we get someone like Willingham in LF.
November 17th, 201212:51 pm
Joey G – I haven’t lived there for decades, but my sister still lives in the same house we bought back in 1954. The area has grown quite a bit since then – used to be rural and no longer is.
I’ve moved on from Georgia to Florida and now to central Vermont. I think we’re staying here until they plant us next to the granite and maple trees.
November 17th, 201212:54 pm
My aplolgies for Girl. Cumberland is near Palmyra? You don’t like the cmbo of Span/Willingham?
I’d like to get those two plus Doumit from MN, even with the Lird signing. Doumit would take the place of Hinskie when Mac gets back plus the addition of a versatile third catchr brings possibilities to the table
November 17th, 201212:56 pm
Lew- Vermont must be beautiful. Imagine it would be a great place to retire. I actually grew up in Utah, Salt Lake area. Moved to PA in ‘99.
November 17th, 201212:58 pm
The tough thing for the Braves is that they have 2 OF spots to fill, not just 1. Even with the $ they have this offseason, it’s not enough to sign 2 OFers if they do in fact want to fill the needs (including 1 of they to be a good lead-off guy). I don’t see Bourn back with the team so I only see a trade to fill that need. I could be wrong on Pagan or Victorino, but I don’t see Victorino as a lead-off guy and I don’t see the Braves paying Pagan’s asking price, the cost vs the price don’t seem good to me. So, I like the idea of trading for Fowler/Span and then signing Upton or Ross given the options out there.
I think I’d like Willingham in left, but I don’t see the Braves signing Bourn for CF, and if you get Willingham, then there’s no lead-off guy if you sign Upton too. That would leave them to need to trade again (unlikely) or signing Vitorino or Pagan and I don’t like that.
I like to see ours Braves turn more RH hitting club next year.with Jhey/Freeman/Mac LH hitting i think with a couple of RH will be powerful team…if you look in the NL East every team has a couple lefty in there rotation
We talk baseball, other sports, music, movies, BBQ and whatever (except politics or religion)
