“……Juan Francisco hit a two-run homer tonight for Licey in the Dominican Winter League…..”

Thanx for the correction DAVE. The box had him down for 2-4, 2 HR and 2 RBI.

Nonetheless, at .347 BA, he’s performing better as the winter session grinds along.

And i missed CHRISTIAN BETHANCOURT’s line at the bottom of the LICEY scores. He went 2-4 also raising his average to .286 with a double [3]. Good to see him stirring at the plate.

Mariners out on Hamilton… another suitor gone.

Also from Rosenthal, the Marlins made verbal promises to Jose Reyes and Mark Buehrle that neither would be traded when Miami was courting the two as free agents last winter. The promises were made in place of formal no-trade clauses, which the Marlins don’t hand out as a matter of club policy. Reyes and Buehrle, of course, were traded to the Blue Jays on Tuesday as part of the big 12-player deal that has yet to be officially confirmed by the league.

Great defenders in left and right could shrink center enough to help.

I was wondering how many posts Shaun was making on the ‘ol blog about the AL MVP race. Shaun, of course things other than stats contribute to the term “value” Did it add “value” to the Tigers when Miggy openly and without distraction moved to 3B so they could trade for Prince? Does it diminish “value” to a team when, say a great player like Manny (in his prime) shoves office workers to the ground, fights with teammates in the dugout and becomes such a distraction that the front office felt they needed to deal him away no matter what?

Do stats play a vital role? Of course. The are the most important piece. I would argue that performing in the heat of a pennant race in September is more valuable to the team than dominating in April (as an example, not as an argument in the Trout vs. Miggy debate).

They both were great and I would have understood if Trout won the award. But to dismiss what Miggy accomplished this year and to say he wasn’t deserving and to say value is completely objective with no subjectivity is, well…very Shaunesque. Dude, you are probably one of the brighter people I have come across on the ‘ol blog, but man, quit beating the drum every once in awhile, especially when you are wrong. ;-)

The Braves should be very proactive at signing BJ Upton and looking to Texas in a trade for Olt that would also net us Gentry. Olt possibly might be ready as early as next season to man the duties at 3rd allowing us to keep Prado in LF and with Gentry giving us a very effective 4th outfielder that can play all 3 outfield spots. Otherwise if Olt isn’t ready to begin the season, we could move Prado to 3rd, Gentry to leadoff and place him either in CF or LF which would give us probably the best defensive outfield in the game with Gentry, Upton and Heyward.

Interesting notes on Juan.

He is getting tons of lefty pitching–more lefties than righties. Here is his line against righties:

.474./476/.737/1.213

With runners in scoring position, against L and R pitching, he is:

.438/.474/.688/1.161

Of course, his K/BB percents, even against righties, are still 20% and 5%.

If he really is dropping some lbs, getting in shape, I’m sure Wren is following that closely.

The main thing is that he is seeing 58% lefty pitching, which is really odd, but it means his overall stats so far are skewed strongly against him.

If he had a 1.213 OPS in a platoon up here in ATL, could he still wear his hat crooked?

Was diagnosed with stage 3 hodgkins lymphoma in 2006, had to take 12 high dose chemo treatments usually every two weeks unless my white blood cell count was too low. It was pretty tough but just kept telling myself i had too much to live for and pretty much continued working the whole time except for a few bad days when i was real sick. Keeping a fighting mentality and not just giving up truly helped me i believe. The initial biopsy wasn’t too bad, but when they did a bone marrow test on me they hit a nerve and i about came unglued, it really hurt. All of my veins in my forearms pretty much collapsed and still are useless for drawing blood. If i would have had to have any more treatments they were going to have to put in a port. But so far all is good on my checkups, so just stay positive and fight the fight my friend if you have to.

Even if the Braves start the season with Schafer in CF, Francisco at third, and Prado in LF with Laird being the no. 1 catcher for 30-40 games to start the season, I still see them finishing no worse than third.

Thank You Mets and Marlins for keeping us from falling from the downstairs room to the end of the plumbing system.

I would not put it past them not to spend that $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ during the off season & a suitable trade is 50/50 at this point. Hey, other teams should be asking high and outside of some mid level pitching potential, we really do not have that much to trade.

I see Delgado, Teheran and Gilmartin as mid range guys now and Hanson, while he has won he has his warts, he cannot last past July now.

From last year, here were some major story lines:

Chipper finishes strong, retires as still ATL’s best hitter
Heyward back on track after horrid sophomore slump
Simmons stuns with glove, arm, and bat in MLB debut
Kimbrell breaks through as #1 MLB closer
Kris Medlen, from nowhere to #1 MLB starter in the second half

We had some negative ones too, but these are just examples of unpredictable positives. How about these:

BJ Upton rejuvenated by ATL, returns to rookie form
2010 version of Dan Uggla rakes in 2013
Lean, mean Juan Francisco crushes NL right handers
Unhittable Johnny Venter returns after one year “absence”
Braves can’t find spot for red hot rookie Ahmed

I’m not predicting that any of these will happen. My only point is that stuff happens, OK.? None of these things would be considered all that odd in baseball.

“The Upton brothers have been my wish all along”

Pretty much my nightmare. BJ isn’t a very good player and is gonna cost as much as Bourn but will produce much less. Now if he is cheap around $8 million, sure. But .300 on base is just awful.

As for Justin. Guy has just too good of numbers at home and terrible numbers on the road to think that he’d be a great fit at Turner Field.

I’d rather overpay for Bourn than BJ Upton. Gosh one is just an overall much better player. Hopefully Michael gets a 100+ million contract and we don’t have to worry about what could’ve been.

Lew:

I just don’t see Bourn back with the Braves… so on that premise:

I’m pretty neutral on BJ Upton–I like the good and I dislike the bad for him equally. We need a RH bat and he could play either CF or LF, so signing him gives more options to the Braves for the other OF spot. With him, the Braves could trade for Span/Fowler and feel pretty decent about their OF additions. Could play any of those three in LF or CF and be satisfied.

Not signing him just makes it so much more difficult to fill out the roster to me. I’d stay from Victorino, Pagan is “OK” but I don’t think the Braves are going to pay what he wants either. The rest of the CFs… no thanks. That means you pretty much HAVE to trade for a CF and LF (or sign C Ross and trade for a CF).

I agree Bourn is the better player, but if BJ can get back to his career OBP of .335 or with the help of Walker a little higher, there is not a significant gap. Plus, I think BJ’s best years are ahead of him while Bourn’s may be behind. Bourn has a career OPS+ of 99 while BJ’s is 105.

Again, I would rather have Bourn, but a guy capable of 30/30 entering his prime is worth a shot…how costly of a shot, I am not sure.

Heath – Like I said last evening – never been a BJ Upton fan, but if they decide that’;s the way they need to go, I’ll just hope we come to love him for his offensive prowess and he becomes a sterling citizen while in ATlanta. I suppose we could do worse – he has talent and maybe he’ll achieve his potential, though I’m a bit leery it’s taken this long to have potential meet performance.

Fowler just seems like a good fit – decent player with youth on his side and an Atlantan (his wife, too). He could be a worthwhile acquisition.

My bad on Jersey Gil. I do know Jamison. Couple friends from there. I lived in Perkasie.
Worked in West Point, (Montgomery County), near North Wales. My wife worked in Doylestown.
Miss the area very much. Moved to Chicago area in ‘08.

Jersey Gil:

Upton/Willingham will not be the combo next year in LF and CF… no lead-off guy on the team.

Willingham/Pagan is possible. Braves will likely have to sign one OF and trade for another so this is could be a likely result. I don’t think Braves will pay for Pagan though. I’d guess Upton/Span.

I will say we would give up some defense if we have BJ in CF and someone like Willingham in LF (who I would like to have). Hunter is still a good defensive corner OF. I would rather have Fowler/Willingham or a better defensive CF if we get someone like Willingham in LF.

Joey G – I haven’t lived there for decades, but my sister still lives in the same house we bought back in 1954. The area has grown quite a bit since then – used to be rural and no longer is.

I’ve moved on from Georgia to Florida and now to central Vermont. I think we’re staying here until they plant us next to the granite and maple trees.

My aplolgies for Girl. Cumberland is near Palmyra? You don’t like the cmbo of Span/Willingham?
I’d like to get those two plus Doumit from MN, even with the Lird signing. Doumit would take the place of Hinskie when Mac gets back plus the addition of a versatile third catchr brings possibilities to the table

Lew- Vermont must be beautiful. Imagine it would be a great place to retire. I actually grew up in Utah, Salt Lake area. Moved to PA in ‘99.

Lew:

The tough thing for the Braves is that they have 2 OF spots to fill, not just 1. Even with the $ they have this offseason, it’s not enough to sign 2 OFers if they do in fact want to fill the needs (including 1 of they to be a good lead-off guy). I don’t see Bourn back with the team so I only see a trade to fill that need. I could be wrong on Pagan or Victorino, but I don’t see Victorino as a lead-off guy and I don’t see the Braves paying Pagan’s asking price, the cost vs the price don’t seem good to me. So, I like the idea of trading for Fowler/Span and then signing Upton or Ross given the options out there.

I think I’d like Willingham in left, but I don’t see the Braves signing Bourn for CF, and if you get Willingham, then there’s no lead-off guy if you sign Upton too. That would leave them to need to trade again (unlikely) or signing Vitorino or Pagan and I don’t like that.
