Well, I’ve never been a Bossman Junior fan. I’ve heard a lot about his potential, but how many years does he have to play with all awaiting the day when the performance and potential meet in the middle?

Still – if he’s who the Braves decide we can’t live without, I will only hope we grow to love all the doubles and HR’s he hits for us and he becomes the Braves player nominated annually for the Roberto Clemente Award for his exceptiuonal citizenship and charitable work..

If BJ Upton is significantly cheaper than Michael Bourn, fine, but let’s not pretend that they are the same caliber player. Michael Bourn is a much better overall player than BJ Upton, and it isn’t really close. Upton has power, that’s it. Bourn is better in ever other facet, including attitude.

I will say this – with BJ and Uggla in the lineup together, there will always exist the potential for offensive volitility and many high strikeout games. In between the K’s we should score some serious runs, though.

The discussion between Shaun and nolie illustrates perfectly why Shaun has so much trouble here on the ole blog. He is totally convenced that he is right (in this case, the definition of “valuable” can ONLY be HIS definition)…and if you dont agree, YOU ARE WRONG…And that fact is so obvious, any fool should be able to understand it. Shaun, even if you were right, you are an arrogant pryck.
Few people on this blog (I can count them on one hand, and have a couple of fingures left over) have the baseball knowledge that nolie has. As my wife tells me, sometimes you just need to STFU.

Doubt that’d get me the job. I actually need to be producing at a high good level first. Same with BJ. 4 years of lackluster play, 8 years in and we’re still talking potential. My goodness, he should have put it together by now!

The front office people might say Trout for MVP by a big margin, but I hear among players its overwhelmingly Cabrera.
Just the fact that Miguel Cabrera willingly moved third base to make room for Prince Fielder, and did it with a smile on his face gives him a big head start on being VALUABLE for a team, and most valuable in the AL.
So, stat geeks it is NOT all numbers; there are intangibles.
Plus the Triple Crown doesn’t hurt either. (and yes, RBIs are important).

That is too bad cause I really do enjoy Shaun’s posts — he does know the game.

I hope he stays around cause he does offer alot & I am sure he will not be run off.

Hey, whether you vote for Cabrera or Trout in this case you really do not lose. Either guy could have won and deservedly so.

If the sabermetricians were not so holier than thou, perhaps more of the fan community would embrace it more. And no one knows how to compute WAR unless you have an advanced math program. Even hard core fans are not going to identify with some of those stats — they are too much work to have fun with.

Runs scored and runs driven in — both are important.

I have not heard that BJ has had any problems with Maddon the last yr or two — perhaps he has grown up a bit.

Should this be the guy we commit to for 5 or 6 yrs — Cannot say yes or no. Have to trust the judgement of Mr. Wren.

No one, even Nolie disputes the talent and upside.

If Philly gets him & Bourn goes to the Nats well, guess we have to go another way than FA route.

Could work for the best in the end — how do not know. The $$$$$$$$$$$$ will still be there.

And who knows what Melky that they get, the post Braves Melky who was good, the Yankees Melky who was a servicable player or the ATL version of Melk who was lazy, outta shape and a total BUMB who deserved to be Booed on the way in and on the way outta town.

My guess is somewhere in the middle like the NYY version of him. That is alot of money for a pretty average player.

Logic and reason? Statistical research? It will be a simple task for you to gather the comments about Cody Ross and BJ Upton from the last month or so, and compare the “pro” feedback and “con” feedback of each player. It will be interesting.

Now, how do you determine whether a motive of “looks” is the reason for the pro or con feedback? Maybe a survey of those bloggers with the comments? Will there be enough of a sample size to be statistically significant? If not, it will be an exercise in bullsiht. Kinda like your comment above.

This Insider Articles says we don’t get a CF FA this year
For baseball’s general managers, the toughest part of the baseball season is only a few weeks away. Convening in Nashville, Tenn., from Dec. 3-6, baseball executives will gather to take part in the biggest shopping days of the year at baseball’s winter meetings.

The free-agent market is now 35 years of age, and today’s free-agent market generally features fewer of baseball’s elite than it did 20 years ago as teams are more willing and eager to lock up their best talent before those players hit the market. After all, not only do players have less leverage before hitting free agency, but why risk someone giving Matt Cain or Cole Hamels crazier money than you intend to?

Different free-agent markets are strong and weak in different things and this year, if you’re looking to sign an upgrade at second base, you have very few options. If you’re looking for a big-name shortstop, you’d have better luck waiting for divine intervention. But if you crave a center fielder, this may be your lucky year.

According to Keith Law’s free-agent rankings, the top three hitters available in free agency, and four of the top 10, have generally played center field in recent years. Quality center fielders don’t grow on trees, so there’s no shortage of possible destinations for this group. And if you don’t have $50 million or $100 million in your bank account to sign your very own center fielder — I checked this morning and I appear to be a smidgen short of the required funds — speculation is the next best thing. For each of the top free-agent center fielders, I’ve made my guess for which destinations would be the best fit. I’ve also tried to focus on at least remotely plausible scenarios, so no Houston Astros-sign-everybody-in-the-world scenarios. Since it’s no fun having a bunch of complex algorithms and not using them, I’ve also included the 2013 ZiPS projection for each player in the park of his proposed 2013 employer.

Josh Hamilton to the Detroit Tigers

Hamilton is the best hitter you can get this offseason without having to surrender a gaggle of your top prospects, but his possible destinations are limited. It will be shocking if he gets the seven-year, $175 million contract he is reportedly seeking, but he’s still not going to come cheaply and the majority of the teams in baseball are unlikely to have enough bankroll to bring Hamilton to town. He doesn’t come without concerns, as he’s not likely to be a viable center fielder much longer, turns 32 in May, and has worse plate discipline than me near buffalo wings on Super Bowl Sunday. However, what he has is game-changing power, and that’s why he’ll make big bucks this winter.

Hamilton’s ideal home is with a team that has deep pockets and the roster to be a serious threat right now, and is less concerned about the last few years of a Hamilton contract. The Tigers fit that bill. Detroit needs a serious upgrade on Brennan Boesch, was just in a World Series in which the team’s disappearing offense was its downfall, and has an owner in Mike Ilitch who has made no secret that he wants to be around to see his team win the World Series and is willing to spend the money required. While Hamilton would be a better fit in Comerica Park if he were a right-handed hitter, the Tigers can’t simply call the factory and ask for the right-handed model number.

ZiPS projection in Detroit: .282/.341/.503 with 28 home runs and 4.5 WAR

B.J. Upton to the Cincinnati Reds

While the team certainly isn’t happy that Drew Stubbs is no longer able to hack his way to an OPS high enough to make him a viable center fielder, this is a better time than most to need an upgrade. The best fit for the Reds in the free-agent market is a center fielder who is good enough offensively to be a legitimate hitter in left when top prospect Billy Hamilton is ready to take over, has the power to really take advantage of Great American Ballpark’s homer-greedy characteristics, is preferably right-handed to balance out the lefty-ness of Joey Votto and Jay Bruce, and will come cheaper than Josh Hamilton. Upton fulfills all of these requirements and is a solid enough glove in center (and young enough) that he would retain serious defensive value in left after a future move. Upton survived in Tropicana Field, but the Trop is one of the toughest hitters’ parks in baseball and with Upton’s biggest offensive plus being his home run tally, Cincinnati would be a cozy home and he’s a better option for the Reds than Michael Bourn. Just avoid that Cincinnati chili.

ZiPS projection in Cincy: .258/.327/.491 with a 30/30 season and 4.3 WAR

Michael Bourn to the Philadelphia Phillies

There has been speculation that a big-name free agent this offseason may be off Philadelphia’s radar thanks to the team’s hefty salary commitments. This would be a mistake by the Phillies. As currently designed, the team has a shrinking — and very expensive — window in which to return to the playoffs. Like someone going over Niagara Falls in a barrel, Philly’s in a poor position to change course midway.

The Phils have been using Jimmy Rollins in the leadoff spot for years, but his combination of low OBP and power is better suited for a lower spot in the order where he can drive in runs. Nobody will confuse Bourn with vintage Rickey Henderson, but he has had a solid on-base percentage the past four years (.348 in that span) and is a far better option in center for Philadelphia than anyone it has on hand right now. Ryan Howard may be drastically overpaid, but the one thing he definitely still retains is the ability to occasionally crush an errant pitch, and Bourn on the bases will make those Howard homers more lucrative.

ZiPS projection in Philly: .271/.337/.376, with 47 stolen bases and 3.9 WAR

Angel Pagan to the San Francisco Giants

The Giants did not make a qualifying offer to Angel Pagan, which I feel was a mistake. Pagan isn’t the first guy you want to give $13 million, but you can generally overpay a player on a one-year contract as you don’t have to face the worst thing about free-agent contracts — those dreaded down years at the end of the deal. Bringing back Pagan is still an option for the Giants, and with an outfield that needs two starters, Pagan will probably be more cost-effective than the first three centerfielders on this list. With Pagan’s bread-and-butter being doubles and triples rather than round-trippers, AT&T Park’s large center field and power alleys, combined with the fact that there are some other big outfields in the NL West, mean that Pagan should retain a solid slugging percentage as a Giant.

ZiPS projection in S.F.: .270/.320/.403 with 32 doubles, 9 triples and 3.1 WAR

Shane Victorino to the Boston Red Sox

The Flyin’ Hawaiian had one of his worst years in 2012, hitting .255/.321/.383 and dropping off everyone’s list of top center fielders in baseball. With the depth available at the position this winter, Victorino risks being completely overlooked, which is short-sighted. While 2012 was a groaner, Victorino turns 32 next month, not 37 or 38, and is only a year removed from a 2011 season that was legitimately star-level. The Red Sox could use an extra bat in the outfield, and with the team at a crossroads, Victorino provides a viable Plan B if the Red Sox decide to trade Jacoby Ellsbury in the offseason. Boston is in a good position to make some high-upside moves with players that give it some flexibility and there’s enough room in the payroll — thanks to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ willingness to throw money around indiscriminately — that Victorino’s contract won’t prevent the Red Sox financially from making any other move that they desire.

ZiPS projection in Boston: .267/.330/.425, 10 triples, 27 stolen bases and 3.1 WAR

Grady Sizemore to the Houston Astros

Remember when it was Grady Sizemore, not Cliff Lee or Brandon Phillips, who was the biggest prize in the treasure chest of awesomeness Cleveland got from the Expos for Bartolo Colon? That was a long time ago, and Sizemore hasn’t been healthy in years and didn’t even step onto the field during the 2012 season. If there ever was a lottery ticket in baseball, Grady Sizemore is it, and no team needs a lottery ticket like the Houston Astros do. Jeff Luhnow has his work cut out for him in Houston, having inherited a team with very little viable talent, and having to follow up a 107-loss season with a move to a tougher division and needing to find an extra hitter every game.

So, given that Sizemore still wants to try to return in 2013, why not take a chance on a very talented player? If Sizemore succeeds, the Astros benefit from adding a much-needed player with talent, and if he doesn’t, it’s not as if it would make the Astros finish laster, a word that doesn’t even exist.

ZiPS projection in Houston: .224/.291/.402 in 214 at-bats, but with a 3 percent chance of reaching his former level of play and a 10 percent chance of being in the top third of center fielders offensively.

In business, return vs cost is as much a metric on “value” as any. Lest we forget, baseball teams are “for profit” organization just like the ones for which most of us work. Just then a man walks into the nightclub, he comes riding into the nightclub, on a pony, with a feather stuck into his hat

“Well make it a short jockey” the man says
“And while you’re at it give that lady’s lawyer some briefs”
The lady stands up and says “I can defend myself, your Honor”
And the lawyer says “But I’ll defend her honor, your Honor”
The judge says “Well on her or off her, make up your mind”
The comic says “Definitely on her, that’s the best offer I’ve had all day”
“Well take it or leave it” says the Judge
“Couldn’t we just drop it?” says the comedian
He says “You better drop leaflets before you bomb”
And the comedian says “I’m already bombing”
He says “Maybe it’s your material”
He says “You don’t think it fits?”
He says “Well it could be let out a little”
The comedian says “How much do you think it will cost me?”
He says “It’ll cost you an arm and a leg”
The comic says “Well listen, could you put it on the cuff?”
The tailor says “I’ll tell you what I’ll do. We’ll forget the leg and I’ll just charge you an arm”
And a beautiful arm it is
“OK” says the comedian and the tailor cuts off the comedian’s arm and gives him the suit
The tailor calls his girlfriend and asks her to go out on the town with him in order to celebrate
He calls on his girlfriend and gives her the beautiful arm as a gift
She wears it around her neck just like a stole and they go out on the town

I thought about leaving rich with the last word as the best thing, but then I didn’t want him to get stuck with the killing the blog tag. So I’ll take the blame and bring up the demise of the twinkie. :)

It seems to me the worst thing about this is that future generations will totally miss a running gag in an episode of “Friends”! They won’t get the secondary meaning of a “twinkie” because they will have no idea what the original meaning was! . . . . (chirp, chirp)

tater, the trick is stuff the golf bag full of the same beer they sell. buy two in the clubhouse with the cooler they or the beer girl gives you and reload.

Not from the tee though.

Upton is a still-young, surly guy, who when things are not going well, becomes an evil carcinoma. If the Braves sign this character, I for one would be sorely disappointed. I mean, really, the guy’s played for some pretty competitive Rays teams, and Joe Maddon will probably not miss him one whit. He’s rather have a team full of Longoria’s than Upton’s; not that he’d ever say anything to that effect. — MiaBchBravesFan

And how do you know this to be true?

one for each of us. that said I think we should pass the hat and send Efrim and Tennpaul on a braves road trip together.

they would have a great time. i love scanning through the day posts. Though i believe Tennpaul is more like BAS and Ef is more like shaun or Tobf socially.

Hello everyone! I think B.J. Upton would be a great fit. He’s expected to talk with the Phillies, and we will know what’s the next step after that! Wren, seems to like him, and I think he will be a great team player. All this attitude talk about B.J. is comedy at the most. It’s amazing what people post when they dislike some one!

I also think Cody Ross would be a good fit. Cody Ross 26 HR’s, B.J. Upton 28 HR’s , and Heyward 27 HR’s. Now that’s a little bit of Speed, power, and descent hitting with the 3 of them. Hope Wren, can pull it off. I’m open to other possibilities, but like this one the best.

Braves bench will look some thing like this -
1. Paul Janish SS, and 2nd base
2. Laird catcher
3. Francisco 3rd, and LF
4.Reed Johnson Hopeful signing?
5. Mejia, which would back up Freeman. That’s how I see the bench.

Im not alone in saying no to BJ Upton, VJ. I’ve watched a good bit, nolie even more, and Ive talked to Rays fans who say stay away. Not just me being crazy again. The stats, results, and opinions of fans all agree; stay away and say mo. I’d like to know your opinion of him though…

Have a winter, Juan!!! Hope ya finish it up on a good note.

Attitude talk about BJ is comedy…. no its not cuz its true. What’s comedy is calling him a good defender, calling him the RH bat we need, saying that he’s worth 12+ mil based on his performance. Potential, potential, potential…. puh lease.

I’ve been thinking about BJ Upton.

1. If Wren really put on a show for him (instead of doing his agent a favor, trying to mess with PHI, WASH, etc.), I give us a 60% chance of signing him. The parenthetical, I think, is unlikely, so 60%.

2. He only makes sense if there is a lot there beyond the numbers he has put up over the last 3 years. If we sign him, then I’m 100% sure Wren sees that, and I’m 99% Wren is probably right. He’s pretty good at his job.

3. So it boils down to what we do for BJ, not vice versa. A lineup that protects his bat more? Some team mates and coaches that make him more excited about playing ball? Some of that ATL professionalism that rubs off on him? Just a change of scenery?

A positive note, his OBP as late as 2011 was .331. Not the .380 plus of his first couple of years, but hopeful.
