I get what you’re saying, but there are some folks on here that are downright adamant about there ideas!
And now, word is that 5 hour energy drinks have killed some folks. How many have been saved by not running into the rear a that semi hauling a load of cattle?
Better to pitch well, live up to your potential, make an impact in the bigs, and need TJ surgery than to pitch poorly and be an after-thought in Braves’ prospect history.
Whatever changes Teheran was told to make aren’t working. Try something else, go back to what worked, or flounder in AAA for another few years.
I guess we get spoiled a little by the Heywards and Freemans, guys who rocket through the minors with barely a speed-bump. Next thing you know, we expect every kid to do two levels a year or something, get to the bigs NLT than 22, and then dominate when he gets there.
Actual trajectory for most minor leaguers, even those who turn out to be pretty good big-leaguers, tends to be a little wavier than that, and I think we forget that.
What are you talking about that I missed 5 hr energy killed someone?!
Murph-
My thought….go back to what worked….if it ain’t broke don’t fix it….if they were so damn worried about his arm slot and future injury….let him have the 15 win year in Gwinnett and then trade his *ss
No sense in killing the guy’s velo ala JJ and Hanson and then having him devalued to the point they get scraps when they do deal him…..my god someone really oughta get fired down there over how they’ve screwed up so many projectable arms the last few years!
I guess we get spoiled a little by the Heywards and Freemans, guys who rocket through the minors with barely a speed-bump.
I’ll settle for a position player prospect that is young, or at least age appropriate for the level, and raking. Rome, Lynchburg, Mississippi, or Gwinnett – doesn’t matter. Just want to see some positive results from a player that isn’t 23 in Double-A or in Gattis’ case, close to late 20’s.
I’m pretty sure that his first ML DL stint for tendonitis would draw tons of posts here, saying that he should change his delivery.
Probably, but based on what he’s doing lately, he’ll never get the call, so we’ll never know.
Granted, he’s got a few months to work on things before ST starts, but I’d be very, very surprised to see Teheran as the 5th starter when camp breaks. Trade or no trade, Delgado is just the better pitcher (right now).
If I’m a Braves decision maker, I consider a lightning strike plan wherein we make our best offer to Stanton. In the unlikely scenario the Marlins accept, we immediately go to Josh Hamilton and tell him he can become the third part of the most naturally talented baseball outfield since Sheffield, Jones and Jones.
Or, in a less pessimistic, I hate Gattis tone, mid-20’s
For a perspective of how ancient Gattis is for his league. 2012 average age for Southern League 24.2. Evan Gattis’ age whilst in the Southern League: 25.
Big lefty reliever Ryan Buchter has also made good impression in AFL, pitching in 10 games before today’s finale, posting 1.84 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 14 K/9 BB in 14-2/3 innings. He had great numbers at Double-A last season (1.31 ERA, 35 games, 50 K/19 BB in 41-1/3) , but struggled mightily with command at Triple-A (nine games, 10.12 ERA, 5 K/17 BB in 8 innings).
Whatever changes Teheran was told to make aren’t working. Try something else, go back to what worked, or flounder
In Boys Of Summer, Joe Black talked about refining his curve ball delivery, how it came to a point in a game (a high-leverage point, though naturally he didn’t call it that, LOL) when he had to decide if he would just continue to throw the pitch the way he had always thrown it, or if he would use the new delivery in a real game with real consequences. He chose the new, his curve ball became lethal, and he basically won ROY with it.
My point is that changing the way you pitch is not only not easy, but conviction is just as important as mechanics. Maybe Teheran is mechanically sound, but hasn’t found the conviction to make a better delivery work for him yet. Just saying that there’s more to it than not bending your back leg.
Average age of the Miami Marlins AA, Southern League affiliate: 25.2.
Want old for his league, for real late 20’s? Look at the Jacksonville Suns: Graham Taylor, 28; Josh Schmidt, 29; Russ Mitchell, 27; Chris Gutierrez, 28; Ben Lasater, 28; German Duran, 27; Shawn Bowman, 27; Corey Madden, 28; Garrett Parcel, 27; Ryan Patterson 29…
Hell, one of the Cardinals best hitters in Allen Craig was a late bloomer….
That’s all good and fine, but expecting it to occur on every older prospect is foolish, imo. But we can be optimistic about him. I’ll take anyone who can hit at this point.
So, Evan goes to AAA this year, he’ll actually be young for the league.
Okay, now that’s just being ridiculous….. Scroll through Top prospects lists and I’d bet you’ll find that the majority of them aren’t 25 in Double-A, 27 in Triple-A, etc.
So, “age appropriate for the level” or whatever you want to call it – Gattis is on the older side for whats considered “prospects”.
There were reports on the news today that in the past four years, 13 people have died after drinking Five Hour Energy.. The company denies that the energy drink was the cause or had anything to do with it.

I guess my confusion is rooted in how one can be so optimistic about the past 1100+ major league PA resulting in a .329 OBP, while burning at the stake any positive news of a guy going into AAA younger than the average competition and mashing at every level up to that point… Seems so far the biggest knock on Gattis’ age is, while Heyward was forging excuses for his inability to post an OBP higher than .335 at ages 21 and 22, Gattis was forging his manhood with gypsy ladies on the beaches of America. Ridiculous? I haven’t made an outlandish claim in that statement. League average age is 27.3, he’ll be 26. He’s younger than the league average age. You know, it’s when I see Wren reaching for the ink and paper to hand to Cody Ross that I start thinking, maybe we shouldn’t block Gattis with this guy.
You haven’t seen me angry… well, maybe you have. I get lit up when the likes of JoJo Reyes, Chris Reitsma or Jordan Schafer are on the roster. Never felt that way about Heyward.
It may be a technicality, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t true. And nowhere in that statement did I utilize the term “prospect.”
You responded to my post at 3:28, which had everything to do about prospects. You started with: For a perspective of how ancient Gattis is for his league.
So, naturally, you can see how I fell into thinking you meant “prospects”.
there is a difference between the average at a certain level and the average age of the top prospects at that same level
Hello everyone! true on B.J. Upton. Braves are interested too. It could be possible with Cody Ross LF, and B.J. Upton in CF. That would also be cool with me. Didn’t think Braves would go after B.J. Upton, but will accept it. Like Laird, and he’s the best option on the Free Agent list. Good smart move. Didn’t think Laird was possble, but like the move.
Josh Hamilton has been linked mainly to small-market franchises early in the free-agency period. However, there is growing speculation that the Boston Red Sox will make a run at him, according to CBSSports.com.
“Boston wants to do something big and it wouldn’t shock me if they became players for Josh Hamilton,” a major league general manager told the website.
All have a good one! Talk later tonight. I found out there will be a Terminator 5 Evolution. Takes place in 2014, and Sky Net Escapes from 2030 to to send machines to destroy John Conner. Cant’ wait for that. You’ll will get to see the battle. I think it will be out late 2013. Peace my friends, and “Go!!!!!Braves!!!!!”
Just thought I’d chime in on the latest Braves “rumors” and signings. Think Wren made a good decision acquiring Laird and like the fact he moved quickly to fill this spot. As far as BJ Upton goes, not really thrilled. Kind of already have someone like him in Uggla, except Uggla knows what a walk is. BJ to me is kind of like a glorified Alex Gonzalez. Poor average and OBP but with good pop and defense.
curious: Why didn’t the Braves try to change Hanson’s bad mechanics when he was in the minors? Teheran’s are that much worse?
In the minors, Hanson was a horse, physically. Teheran looked like Tim Hudson after a hunger strike. Maybe they felt Julio’s body (not just his arm) couldn’t take all that torque he was generating. On Hanson, the most I ever heard were “concerns” that maybe he “might” have arm trouble down the road. You’re not going to completely re-work that guy’s delivery just because of that.
“Just an amazing movie that can be quoted over and over and over.”
Absolutely. That and Trading Places. When we are setting up or tearing down after gigs, one of our favorite things to pass time, is move quotes. Once somebody picks one from movie, you MUST continue with that them until you fail. Then we move on.
Trading Places and Coming to Amercia usually last a while.
Not to mention at least once a night, usually early, if there isn’t much response from the crowd, one of us will stomp our foot and and throw out a “SEXUAL CHOCOLATE”!

ncscoots … “Hey, you can get 15000 at monster truck races, which shows that some people will attend some events just because they are there. And I imagine that will be about the extent of the drawing power of the Miami Marlins for a while.”
Maybe the Marlins should start thinking like a minor league club in terms of attendance …
Buy a ticket to the Monster Truck Rally, get into the Marlins game afterwards for free!
Cal Ripkin was on XM first pitch this morning…He favors Miggy over Trout for MVP. He said the “tipping point” for him, was the positive effect Miggy had on the rest of the lineup, RE how the guys ahead and behind him were pitched to. In essence, the other guys saw better pitches, and this raised the BA of the entire lineup.
Of course, Cal doesn’t know much about the game, but this is a perfect example of an intangable (his word) that the Sabre guys disregard. Advanced stats are valuable, but are not the black and white be all and end all that some here would have you believe. Just saying…
raleighbravefan, nice theory. But the Angels had the highest team batting average in the American League and the third-highest slugging percentage, and ranked higher than the Tigers in both categories. The Angels also scored more runs, more runs per game and had a higher OPS than the Tigers. The Angels had the highest OPS+ in the American League.
So I would love to know what makes Ripken thing Cabrera had that effect on the Tigers but Trout did not have any effect on the Angels.
“why would LA have any interest in dealing Kemp with all the funds they have available?”
cabravesfan had to mount a campaign declaring “Kemp is not available” on the blog last year, to try to counter-balance the incessant Eric O’Flaherty for Kemp trade proposals.
She seems to be getting a jump on the “Stanton is not available” campaign.
Maybe the Marlins should start thinking like a minor league club in terms of attendance …
Buy a ticket to the Monster Truck Rally, get into the Marlins game afterwards for free!
What’s really sad is that the first thing that this made me think of are all the postgame concerts the Braves have had the past couple of years.
“Come watch the Braves and stay for the free Mumford and Sons concert afterwards!”
I guess the Braves have to raise money however they can, but it’s hard to watch a game when it’s obvious that half the crowd is simply biding their time until the concert starts.
I’m just not that giddy about Upton. Way to many K’s imo, 1 more than Uggla and that’s just way too many. I don’t believe that an out is an out no matter what, there are productive outs and non-productive out and the strike out is the most non-productive out in baseball. Remember the K machine (Bourn) at bat when the Braves were rallying in the playoff game? Sure would have been nice if he could’ve put the ball in play. (I’m not saying he would have gotten a hit in that situation, but if you put the ball in play you have a better chance than walking back to the dugout with the bat on your shoulder.)
We need a megadeal to go down so that I don’t have to read the ridiculous tweets between the two sides. Better yet, I think it’s a perfect time to go get a haircut and clean up in the house a bit.
but this is a perfect example of an intangable (his word) that the Sabre guys disregard. Advanced stats are valuable, but are not the black and white be all and end all that some here would have you believe. Just saying…
I would argue that anyone who understands advanced stats would never use them as the “black and white be all and end all” way you are referring to here. All stats are simply tools that give us information….it’s simply that some tools give information that correlates more closely to team and player success than other tools do.
As for Ripken’s claim that “lineup presence” is an intangible that cannot be measured, I am honestly unsure about that. There have been many studies done on the effects of “protection” in the lineup, and they have almost universally resulted in the conclusion that there is no evidence that supports the claim. That said, I am of the belief that if a player “believes” something to be true, then it affects the outcome, meaning that there is certainly some affect, it may just be unclear what that is.
For example: If the pitcher of the opposing team is concerned about facing Miguel Cabrera, then that could some affect on the results compared to if the pitcher was brainwashed into thinking Cabrera is “just another batter”. The problem comes in trying to say that those affects are necessarily going to be a positive for Cabrera’s team. It’s possible that the pitcher gets rattled, and makes poor pitches to other batters because he’s worried about Cabrera. It’s also possible that the pitcher becomes hyper-focused and “bears down” because in his mind he cannot afford any mistakes, and actually performs better than he would at his normal focus level.
I am in no way dismissing that some affect may be going on. But by the simple definition of the word “intangible”, we are admitting that we cannot quantify the effect, so it doesn’t make a lot of sense counting it as a credit when you can’t even be sure if the effect is a positive or a negative.
There they go, every time I start talkin’ ’bout boxing, a white man got to pull Rocky Marciano out they azz. That’s they one, that’s they one! Rocky Marciano!
Red Sox have $60 million in guarantees next year(6 players), $23 million in 7 arb. elgible players and lots of holes.
$175 million dollar payroll last year.
Once again, have to say that I am quite happy with Liberty Media’s ownership of the Braves. They may not be jacking payroll up to $150 million, but at least they allow the front office people to do what they do.

Well, I have stuck w/ the motion that although painful at times seems to prove more effective to me….
Changing it at this point after 20+ years, it just didn’t seem feasible to me….
But like you said, in his case, it could be different and no, I can attest its not easy….

Pretty much all I meant by it.

I’m just tired of all the strikeouts.

Yeah, but I prefer that quiet uninvolvement from a concert-goer to spending three hours listening to a Mixxo clone, in the seat behind.
At least with the concert-goer, I know there’s a smaller chance that I’ll end up in jail.
