BJ Upton makes no sense. His OPS outside of Tropicana was .687. His career OPS+ is 105. That’s not a player a frugal team locks up with a five-year contract.
Add the fact that we would lose a first rounder for him and it makes it silly.
I hope Wren uses the currency in pitching to fill needs.

“OBP has a much bigger correlation to runs scored than SB do”
To wit, 30 stolen bases is about one every five games wherein a player garners one additional base. OBP impacts all 600 at bats. That’s not missing the forest for the trees. It’s missing the forest for the air.

A career OPS+ of 105 is pretty good for a decent defensive centerfielder just entering his age 28 season.

Extensive talks with Hamilton? I know I’m in the minority here, but I like it. As I mentioned this morning, Hamilton is a difference maker. The kind of guy who can carry the team.
I’d love to see a trade for Span and then Hamilton signed to a 4 or 5 year deal. If he falls apart he falls apart, but you have to TRY. Insurance and behavioral clauses can cover the team’s butt a little bit. 5 time all stars with an MVP under their belt don’t come available all that often.
Go big or go home.

Its going to be hard to get a player of any decent ability for less than 9, 10 mil per now.
Cody Ross will get that 3 @ 25m — The price always goes up.
That 25 mil is not going to buy a heck of alot unless he goes all out for one guy now. Don;t think you get two or more players now. Maybe one good player and two scrubs.
Cannot reiterate — the price always goes up — Every off season.
Wren can work the phones all he wants, but the market is going to out run this baseball org as long as this business set up is around.

Who would you rather have…. Upton or Hamilton? Considering that both will probably get 6 year deals… I’d rather have Josh, he’s a difference maker, done it before. More of a risk to break down yes, but he’s producing now. We’re still waiting for BJ to do so.
It would so sukk to be wrong on him not coming here though or that the Braves wouldn’t talk much. Those trolls would be so right…..

B.J. used to be a good OBP guy (his first two yrs in the league).
He wants to hit more HRS now and his power potential is nice, but he has to raise that career low .298 OBP. If he can get it to .330 with the big power that is good.
I’ll take a .320 to 330 OBP if he gets me 30 something jacks, 35 doubles and a century of RBI.
As for the yrs and $$$$$$$$, hey, they all come with risk.
Would rather have Justin Upton, but both Uptons are not realistic.

Ahmed had a pair of triples in his first two ABs today in Fall League game. Finishing on a strong note, batting .288 now with an .814 OPS. Meanwhile, Salcedo has been overmatched, going 0-for-4 today to drop his average to a league-worst .136 (11-for-85) with no homers, four RBIs.

Why not call it quits on Salcedo and try to get developable players in the next draft.
Salcedo does not deserve to stay in the org — he is gong from bad to worse and worse than worse.
He does not deserve to play this great game for $$$$$$$$$$$.. He stinks.

The Braves need a powee hitter. Even though Chipper’s production declined over the years, he still hit 15 ro 20 homers in his final years, and now Mccann is out at the beginning of the season.
It seems to me that maybe we need two “good” hitters. Twn to 15 homer guys, for say $7 mil each, as opposed to the basher who hits 30 homers. I dont know whether Tommy Hanson still has too much upside to give up on, or.. whether you package him in a trade to try and get an under 30 power hitter.

It seems very out of character for Wren to talk so much about the folks he is dealing with, he has been very quiet over the years since getting burned a bit that first season. I am tempted to think that talk is to perk up the fans rather than an actual indication of who we might get.

We need guys that can drive runners in. That was our number 1 problem last season.

Any way the Rockies give up Eric Young? The guy plays a decent center field, can hit, and can fly. I’d rather have him than Fowler. I can’t see it costing much in the way of prospects. Especially if these “extensive” talks are going so well with FW and Hamilton. Outfield of Hamilton, Young, and Heyward. Then see if Twins will flip Doumit and Plouffe for our bench. I’m glad FW and the Braves keep their workings quiet, but man I’d like to hear something other than: Stanton, Willingham, or Ross for a while.

Brian McCann got paid this season basically because he will sell jerseys and tickets not because he will play well. Thats the truth he is on the decline, his defense is non-existant and he cant stay healthy. Its not his fault he plays the 2nd most physcally demanding position in sports and really needs to move to 1st Base and/or DH to preserve his career.
