Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Blue Jays have acquired Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson, Mark Buerhle, Emilio Bonifacio and John Buck from the Marlins in exchange for Yunel Escobar, Adeiny Hechavarria, Henderson Alvarez, Jake Marisnick and Justin Nicolino.
Mark Bowman @mlbbowman
Makes some sense. There would still be a desire to get a player who could make a greater impact @jcod82us interested in OF Cody Ross?
Mark Bowman @mlbbowman
Cody Ross has killed LHPs and been OK vs. RHPs. If necessary, could occasionally put Prado in LF and Francisco at 3B vs. RHPs
Like Cody’s gonna come here to be part of a platoon… or that paying him 8mil and then platooning him would be smart
Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal
Asked official with one of clubs if he has any concern that commissioner might kill the deal. His response: “None at all.”
DAVEY JOHNSON for MGR OF YEAR. FREDI improved his MGR skills somewhat, but 5 extra wins should NOT give him consideration for MGR OF YEAR,do y’all want me to have a heart attack?
I’d be pretty disappointed if Cody Ross turns out to be the RH power bat for LF we seek. He’s a borderline everyday player to me, I actually like Pagan more but he’ll be overpaid as well.
I mean come on Loria, it can’t hurt that much to trade Stanton. He’s pizzed just like Uggla was! Just sukks that he’s still cheap for them. He’ll be staying around
Total rebuild for the Marlins, who would have thought this would have happened… But they got a ton of commitments off the books and picked up some young talent.
Boy that would be something if Stanton demanded a trade as well, of course he really doesn’t have any control in that matter but if he becomes a negative to there team its possible. But wow, could you imagine the package of players they could get for Stanton?
This whole deal has to be a negative on the Marlins, what top flight free agents are gonna wanna sign with them over the next few years? Realistically they could have kept the team intact with some minor improvements and would still have a good team, really just needed to get rid of the crazy manager.
Your right about that. They really screwed themselves. From a franchise standpoint Stanton is there most valuable asset, atleast in my opinion. They’ll have no shot at extending him and he’s just gonna have huge ARB salaries until he’s a free agent. I could also see this being pissed off mood stick and be a problem in the club house throughout the season.
Johnson – one years, $13.75
Reyes – five years, $92 million($10 million in 2013)
Buerhle – three years, $49 million($10 million in 2013)
Buck – one year $6.5 million
Bonifacio – $4 million through arbitration – controlled through 2014
Jays added $40 million in payroll for 2013 alone. Wow.

Wilpon = Does not know what he is doing so it seems.
At least our corporate ownership knows what its doing — not a lick of passion for the game or its fans, care enough to keep the team respectable for the sake of business and team value.
But, we know what they are, & they do leave the baseball operation alone.
Could be worse. PR wise, the team is run quite honestly. Not the people’s choice but we sort of know what to expect.
How long $90 or so million will be a mid tiered payroll is anyone’s guess — lots of $$$$$$$ floating around the game and player talent will get more expensive.
Could Jey Hey be a $35 mil player when he is 28????? Not out of the question the way the business of this game is going.
Imagine Trout and Harper being 50-75 mil per yr guys when they hit 30 or so ??????? Who knows??????
If Loria announced that he’s open to trading Stanton, wouldn’t every single team be interested and the Marlins could get a huge franchise changing return for him. Add the talent they could get for him with the talent they just got from the Jays and they’d have 1 helluva system.
Braves would not have a chance to obtain Stanton if he was made available. The teams with the best systems in the sport would be after him – Texas, St. Louis, Arizona, etc. Braves would not have enough, imo.
My take is that Blue Jays win the trade now, but Marlins will be set in the future, but now Marlins will face backlash.
The great gets for Marlins are Henderson Alvarez, Anthony DeSclafani, Jake Marisnick & Justin Nicolin. Yunel is Yunel and the other SS will play 2B for Marlins, but those I just mentioned are likely to become cornerstones for the Marlins in the future.
Bowman’s just a fool, Efrim… I can’t believe he really suggested a platoon w/ Ross. That would not be happening, and to pay him 8mil to do so is stupid.
ESPN Stats & Info @ESPNStatsInfo
Reported Marlins-Blue Jays trade means MIA will have traded 12 of 25 players from 2012 opening day roster, including entire starting infield
Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN
TOR GM Alex Anthopoulos told a friend last week that he was working on a pie-in-the-sky trade that he didn’t think would happen. But it did.
I’d swap Rasmus and Bonifacio, Efrim. No way is Rasmus hitting 2nd
Honestly, I’d probably hit Lawrie 2nd. But who knows. I’ll leave the lineup out of it…
C Arencibia/Buck
1B Encarnacion
2B Bonifacio
SS Reyes
3B Lawrie
LF Gose/Davis
CF Rasmus
RF Bautista
DH Lind/Buck
They still have a lot of assets, and D’Arnaud will be ready at some point in 2013. I’d bet AA is not nearly done in his trades. Toronto is still a starter short – Johnson, Buerhle Morrow, Romero – and they need some bullpen arms. Still a great haul and a very good roster.
Blue Jays are challenging for the division, pretty exciting stuff. Hopefully Wren has some surprises for us as well. We’ve lost Chipper, Bourn is very likely gone, and now David Ross a fan favorite is gone. McCann is gonna miss some of the season. Wren has around 25 million to play with and enough pitching to make a trade or 2.
DOB thanks for the great piece, ubbelivable number of responses.
WREN AND FREDDI HATERS give it a rest. 94M budget, injuries, etc…94 wins, GOOD JOB.
ROSSY gonna miss ya, best of luck to you, you deserve the money, should be starting somewhere.

Love MARTIN, but it wouldn’t be bad if we could get a masher at third, say Tori in center Martin in left
WORRIED about LONG RANGE with MAC planning to bring BETANCOURT up early?
I think DELGADO is ready for a big year. Great stuff, less nerves this year.

“Our hope is that a new manager, along with roster improvements, will restore a winning culture.” – Larry Beinfest – October 23rd after hiring Mike Redmond
Insane.
Blue Jays gave up three prospects from their Top 10 in the deal….
1. Travis d’Arnaud, c
2. Jake Marisnick, of
3. Noah Syndergaard, rhp
4. Aaron Sanchez, rhp
5. Justin Nicolino, lhp
6. Roberto Osuna, rhp
7. Marcus Stroman, rhp
8. Adeiny Hechavarria, ss
9. D.J. Davis, of
10. John Stilson, rhp
If someone can pry Francisco’s head out of his @ss, the platoon with Cody Ross would work quite well, but that’s a very big if.
IF IT DID WORK I would have no problem paying Cody Ross 6 + 7.5 + 8.5 to hit mostly against lefties. I know it would be very pricey for a platoon guy, but Francisco is cheap right now, and the combination could be very, very strong and, as a combination, very cheap. And if Cody ends up playing every day, he’s worth about that much in a 3 year deal.
It’s hard to believe any rumors nowadays, they continue to say the Braves are interested in Hamilton… Which is a complete joke. Wren said he’s only interested in premium players, Torii Hunter and Cody Ross are not premium players. Ross is a borderline everyday player who wants 3 years 25 million…. Hunter wants to stay in the AL and is looking for 2 years, so both don’t make sense for the Braves. Bourn is gonna get a huge pay day more than the Braves are gonna be willing to spend which I agree with. No Chance were getting Justin Upton… Shane Victornio is borderline also and really isn’t a premium player anymore, BJ Upton isn’t viewed as a Braves type and is gonna get paid well so he’s not a fit, Nick Swisher is gonna cost a draft pick and still a nice pay day so I don’t see it. Angel Pagan is a solid option but is set to be overpaid and likely to resign with the Giants…
So where do we look? Same old Josh Willingham and Denard Span options haha
AA still signed Maicer Izturis for three years, $9 million. Bonifacio as a super utility player. Man, I still see a lot of trades coming out of Toronto.

SP Johnson,SP Buerhle, SP Romero, ….,…..
Jays still need bullpen arms and a starter or two. All of their great prospects are further down in the system. Still a great haul.

Wikipedia just had an entry as: “Jeffrey H. Loria (born November 20, 1940) is an art dealer, noted cheapskate, and the owner of the Miami Marlins.”

If Loria announced that he’s open to trading Stanton, wouldn’t every single team be interested and the Marlins could get a huge franchise changing return for him. Add the talent they could get for him with the talent they just got from the Jays and they’d have 1 helluva system.

Mark Bowman @mlbbowman
Cody Ross has killed LHPs and been OK vs. RHPs. If necessary, could occasionally put Prado in LF and Francisco at 3B vs. RHPs
The team isn’t giving Cody Ross a multi year deal for $25 million to be a platoon player. If so, Wren needs to have his head checked.

Mathis is a solid get for C for now.

Bowman’s just a fool, Efrim… I can’t believe he really suggested a platoon w/ Ross. That would not be happening, and to pay him 8mil to do so is stupid.

Reported Marlins-Blue Jays trade means MIA will have traded 12 of 25 players from 2012 opening day roster, including entire starting infield

Honestly, I’d probably hit Lawrie 2nd. But who knows. I’ll leave the lineup out of it…
C Arencibia/Buck
1B Encarnacion
2B Bonifacio
SS Reyes
3B Lawrie
LF Gose/Davis
CF Rasmus
RF Bautista
DH Lind/Buck
They still have a lot of assets, and D’Arnaud will be ready at some point in 2013. I’d bet AA is not nearly done in his trades. Toronto is still a starter short – Johnson, Buerhle Morrow, Romero – and they need some bullpen arms. Still a great haul and a very good roster.

Jose Fernandez, Christian Yelich, Jake Marisnick, J.T. Realmuto, and Justin Nicolino. Not too bad…..

How bout picking up both of the UPTONS fill in a few back ups and call it a day.
Once again DOB thanks, looking forward to seeing what Frank does with a little budget to work with. Can’t wait to read deals as they happen. Looking forward to great year.
