And second! Just like the Bravos!
November 2nd, 20126:53 pm
Now, sign Rolen and begin real negotiations with Bourn and we are looking better.
November 2nd, 20126:55 pm
Oh .. and hello DOB!!! Most of my posts are so late in the thread that no one ever reads them. Figured this time it might be seen so … keep up the awesome work!
November 2nd, 20126:58 pm
Good idea to do this. He’ll never take it and worst case scenario we get a draft pick from the team he does eventually sign with if it’s not Atlanta.
Now, while he mulls that over, get Rossy and Reed resigned and then go fill those holes we need. And no, not Scott Rolen. Great player, but we need someone who’s going to be here for a while.
November 2nd, 20127:07 pm
Sign Ludwick and Pagan. Only offer at most three years to Ludwick. He will be 35 next July, and need to make room for Gattis.
And re-sign Reed, Ross, and Durbin.
November 2nd, 20127:23 pm
David, I like the idea of Angel Pagan. He’s a switch hitter and he doesn’t SO nearly as often as MB. Bourn had 155 K’s. That’s Dan Uggla territory without the power.
Bob in SF
November 2nd, 20127:24 pm
DOB, you keep mentioning Pagan as an option but I don’t see him leaving SF unless they seriously low ball him and that’s not Sabean’s style. The Giants need a CF too, they know and like Pagan as well and just like the Braves realize he’s much cheaper than Bourn. Pagan loves it here in SF as well and everything I’ve read indicates he wants to get a deal done. The only FA that might price himself out of SF is Jeremy Affeldt.
November 2nd, 20127:28 pm
Does anyone have a list of FA’s who got qualifying offers? This new rule drastically changed the FA mkt and I like the new faster sched for offering and accepting. It will add excitement to the Hot Stove League.
November 2nd, 20127:30 pm
Bob in SF, were you surprised that SF didn’t give Pagan a QO?
November 2nd, 20127:35 pm
No, they said they had already announced thy would not make any QOs; Sabean works in mysterious ways yet they somehow keep getting rings. That being said the Giants did say today they were in contact with Pagan and their other FAs they wanted to resign. Like I said before; the Giants want Pagan and he seems to want them, it would have to take an outrageous offer to get him away from SF or they would have to really try to job him and I don’t see either happening.
November 2nd, 20127:37 pm
Hopefully he won’t take it, and with Boras he shouldn’t, I liked him but dang he dropped off (the leadoff hitter does not need to be striking out 150+ times per year) and if last year was any indication he’s a First Half hitter (and in the case of these Half and Half Hitters, a Second Half Hitter is way more beneficial to your club than a First Half hitter)
November 2nd, 20127:45 pm
Don’t bother with Bourn. He is a September choker like a few other names on this roster (and formerly on this roster). Go elsewhere for less $$$.
November 2nd, 20127:50 pm
For the second time in three years, a team (SF) with a less desireable position player lineup than the Braves wins the championship. Maybe upgrade the starting pitching and add fill in the holes in the outfield. We still have a bunch of if’s at starting pitching.
The reason any player selects Scott Boras as his agent is simple: max money, and the willingness to go just about anywhere to get it. Bourn is hitting 30, and this is his one chance to hit the lottery. Many teams will ignore his stike out #’s, and figure he’ll be worth $15-18 million per for 5 or 6 years.
Eventually, he will be seen as a liability when he hits 34 or so, but if he helps bring a title that GM will feel it was worth it (i.e. Albert P in LA).
For the money, I’d be happy to see Victorino in CF for the Braves. Only 32 and his #’s (except for 2012) are about the same as Bourn’s, and he’ll be available for around $5m for 2-3 years.
November 2nd, 20127:57 pm
This is a very astute analysis of the reasons it would be risky to commit to a long-term contract with Bourn. Kudos, Dave.
November 2nd, 20128:00 pm
I’m not sure how the new FA system works. Must all free agents get a qualifying offer or only the the ones rated type A in previous years? If the market for someone like Pagan is well below 13.3 million per year, it would seem that a team would be foolish to make such an offer that the player would likely accept and then have to overpay. The fact that Pagan did not get a qualifying offer (if that is a fact) does not indicate a lack of interest from the team and player in reaching a new deal at some level less than 13.3 million/year. It seems that the new deal was put in place to reduce the number of compensatory picks in the draft.
November 2nd, 20128:05 pm
Bye bye little black man. The braves historically never give black players big money contracts..racist mfers
Sambo 4 Rambo
November 2nd, 20128:24 pm
Could Bourne possibly sign the one year deal in hopes for better numbers in 2013 and then hit the market with a full year of solid numbers rather than half a season?? Not a big fan of Pagan, seems like i remember him not being all that in new york like he was this year in san fran. Maybe the teams he plays in his division over there rather than our division over here he has more success against?? And NO WAY am i saying that jordan is our answer in center! Hes like an Ex, you only remember the good times until you get back together and realize why you split the first time. Like a can of old rotten tuna fish!
November 2nd, 20128:31 pm
I know this sounds crazy but I would trade for Jason Bay of the Mets, as long as they eat some of his contract. I think he would be much better in Atlanta than in a pressure cooker like New York. Also I would ask the Yankees about A Rod. As long as they pick up most of his contract he would be a great fix at 3rd base. Leave Prado in left, Jay Hey in center and Bay in right.
Rambo, you’re right….Shafer is NOT the starter in CF. However, I do like the pickup, in that he’s young, fast, plays very strong D in any of the OF spots, and he’s cheap. The Braves had to upgrade their OF depth, along with re-signing Reed, because Hinske and Diaz are toast. And if he is needed in any lengthy stretch as a starter due to an injury to others, he won’t hurt us much.
November 2nd, 20128:35 pm
Bravo, I would agree with you on A-Rod IF the Yankees paid about $20/yr of his salary, because he would likely play better out of the NY pressure-cooker. BUT, I wouldn’t be comfortable with the 5 years part of the contract.
And IMO, with his somewhat limited 3 yr career to consider, I wouldn’t want Heyward in CF due to his tendancy for potential injuries. Just won a RF Gold Glove….he’s right where he needs to be.
November 2nd, 20128:41 pm
upsetum you are full of crap..its not a color thing..I’m black and I don’t go round bitching about the poor black man, I got out and worked and have no problem with any color I deal with. Be proud and make something of yourself and stop the race crap.
November 2nd, 20128:47 pm
Let Bourne go. You can’t make a real push with a leadoff guy who strikes out a lot. Let the imposter leave and get overpaid by a nitwit club.
I wouldn’t let Schafer play with my dog..trash
bravo & Browie if the can’t play under pressure they can’t play…every team has pressure and Braves fail the test every Sept & Aug.
November 2nd, 20128:49 pm
Don’t worry Carl Farvman ..Braves will not match what the offer he get from other team..he’s gone.
November 2nd, 20128:50 pm
Did i just read that someone is throwing the race card at the Braves for not over spending on Bourne. Lmfao
November 2nd, 20128:54 pm
upsettum, You’re stupid enough to run for president ! They never give big money to any BoreAsss client! Grow up you idiot !
November 2nd, 20128:59 pm
The knock on Pagan at time of last year’s trade was that he is not a smart instinctive player, throws to wrong base, mental errors etc.
November 2nd, 20129:06 pm
Well said Mr. Herman. I can not understand why everyone on here keeps saying we need 2 fielders. In my opinion you have to give Jose Constanza a fair shot at 1 of those positions What more does the man need to do. If I am not mistaken didn’t he win the batting tittle for his minor league division? I think he hits as well as Bourn is at least as fast. He bunts well, does not hit into many double plays, he is hungry and the price is right. I say give the man his shot and I also say let him lick his bat ha ha ha
November 2nd, 20129:31 pm
I just read a very disappointing article from Fox Sports and Bleacher Talk talking about the top free agents and where they might be heading. I hope it is rumor and not true.
It said that Bourn is likely headed to the Reds and the Braves are likely going to sign Josh Hamilton.
If that is true, I think that is a MISTAKE.
Hamilton is a prima donna. He is high maintenance. He will come to Atlanta and think the Braves are his team. NOT TRUE!!!
The Braves are Heyward, Freeman, and McCann’s team. They are the homegrown guys. They are the current leaders of the team. It is their team. Hamilton will come in as an outsider and as soon as he starts to struggle, he’ll hear the same things that Uggla is hearing.
Just re-sign Bourn and get it doneso that we can move on. If not, sign Pagan or BJ Upton
November 2nd, 20129:35 pm
“upsetum”… your statement qualifies you as the MOST IGNORANT human being on this planet… can you say J.D. Drew, Tom Glavine, and MARK TEXIERA to name a few????!!!!! All these guys were WHITE ballplayers the Braves did not give long-term contracts too.
Instead of “pulling the race card” recklessly and being a total TOOL, you should realize Bourn (like Texiera) is represented by the ANTI-CHRIST Scott Boras. The Braves are SMART enough to realize Bourn is NOT worth the unrealistic $100 million PLUS Boras is seeking.
MLB scouts say “ballplayers don’t get faster past 30.” Bourn was invisible the second half of the season (except for his stellar defense).
I HOPE the Nationals are STUPID enough (just like you Mr. “Upsetum”) to give Bourn a 7 year, $120 Million Dollar deal as enticipated.
“Upsetum”…. instead of trying to be a baseball genius, why don’t you leave your place of residence (Georgia Home for the Mentally Challenged) and participate in something you’d REALLY be successful at the the “Million Man March.”
least of the east
November 2nd, 201210:00 pm
at least we’ll get a high draft pick when Bourn signs elsewhere
better than letting him walk away like with Drew, La Roche
I hope he declines the offer as expected. he’s not worth even $13.3 mill.
I belive Tori Hunter and BJ Upton both were not given qualif offers. they are options besides Pagan.
Hunter at his age might accept a 3yr deal.
November 2nd, 201210:11 pm
I personally love the idea of getting Josh Hamilton-the talent he possesses makes him worth the risk!
November 2nd, 201210:20 pm
Trade for Justin Upton to play center, move Prado to this and put Gaddis in LF. Reed Johnson becomes 4th OF. Hit Heyward Leadoff.

November 2nd, 201210:23 pm
I don’t pretend to know what’s going to happen in this off season, except except when I’m writing on this blog, but one thing about which I feel certain: The Braves will not re-sign Bourne!!!! Boras will get him a contract that includes deeding the entirety of Lichtenstein to him. The Nats may do that, but the Braves cannot and will not.
I’m more than a little skittish about any player who has had serious drug issues, such as Josh Hamilton. Pagan has some clubhouse issues, but probably would be a better fit.
We had a great season, and Frank Wren has a little slack to work with now since he has more money freed up. I’m upbeat about next season, unless we start signing players with questionable attitudes. I’m more than a little concerned about our having obtained Jordan Schaefer. Still, we have, overall, more upside than otherwise.
November 2nd, 201210:39 pm
BrianSC, you’re first mistake was reading bleacher report. Your second mistake was taking it seriously. Hamilton is not coming here. Whoever signs Bourne for that kind of deal will come to seriously regret it in less than 24 months. I pray the Nats do it.
November 2nd, 201210:51 pm
Forget Bourn. Hamilton, Gattis. Bombs Away!
November 2nd, 201211:08 pm
My suggestion is start Francisco, Betancourt, Teheran, and Viszciano. If the team tanks, just move them to the Dominican Republic.
November 2nd, 201211:18 pm
No one here knows whether Hamilton is on FW’s radar screen but I’d be all for it. Yes, he may well be high maintenance but I don’t buy the prima donna stuff. My question is do the Braves have the money to reel in Hamilton and Pagan/Victorino/BJ Upton? Hamilton will get north of 15M… will he get north of 20M?
Long time fan
November 2nd, 201211:29 pm
Hamilton has pop but remember that Turner Field is a pitchers park and a thumper like him would not be able to get 40 home runs.
November 3rd, 201212:23 am
How about Polanco at third? I prefer Victorino in CF to Pagan or Bourne.
November 3rd, 201212:29 am
I understand that Bourn is lightning fast and an above average CF fielder, BUT lets not forget what he did after the All-Star break last year……….N-O-T-H-I-N-G! I wouldn’t pay him half of what Boras wants. Boras can go to HECK, the guy is RUINING the GAME of BASEBALL! If I were Bud Selig I would BAN HIS SORRY @$$ from BASEBALL! I honestly hope that we don’t get suckered in and make a huge mistake signing Bourn to a big multi-year deal because we need to spend our money wisely to lock down our homegrown young guys like Jason Heyward, Freddie Freeman, Beachy, and Kimbrel to nice long contracts.
We’ll see this coming year when Mark Appel gets hurt or doesn’t live up to his previous seasons stats and doesn’t get drafted in the first 3 rounds.. He may well have cost that kid a couple million dollars and a shot at the Majors because of his GREED. He is terrible for baseball, the only team he ever helps is in Washington D.C. because they have a bunch of money to throw around. Once in awhile the Pirates bite on one of his guys, but that backfired for them last year. Boras expected them to pay his client WAY over slot and not have enough money to sign all the other guys they drafted.
The rules are being changed to stop the way he operates, but it isn’t slowing him down at all. He’s getting more obnoxious and the way he markets his mediocre players is just ridiculous. It was funny how he wrote up a big book to market Edwin Jackson and couldn’t get more than a one year deal from the Gnats. Screw this guy, I wouldn’t buy spring water from him because it probably came from a toilet in NYC.
November 3rd, 201212:36 am
I honestly hope we never sign another Boras client ever again, other teams are getting wise to this crook. I think he is secretly an employee of the Washington Nationals because that is the only team he ever wants to help out! And he rips them off too! Look at some of the guys he represents, Bryce Harper didn’t do that bad but he is far from the mega prospect that he was hailed as all these years. I honestly believe that we struck GOLD with Jason Heyward and he will play better than Harper ever will in his career.
Jason Heyward is going to be our #1 Super Star for years to come folks, we NEED to lock him up in a 10 year deal ASAP before he gets too good and we can’t afford him. It would make my heart bleed watching him play for the Yankees, it really would. We always seem to do so well finding these local guys and drafting them, we need to work on keeping them longer. Chipper worked out well, I can see J-Hey having a great career like that as well with maybe even more power numbers than Chipper in the long run.
BAN ALL BORAS CLIENTS IN ATL!!!
November 3rd, 201212:41 am
upsetum Andrew Jones got paid, remember Fred McGriff!!!! How about Gary Sheffield. All black players, the Braves have always paid for pitching but I guess if you want to find a racial bias, you will find it regardless of the facts. Bigot.
Please, Frank, give us Dexter Fowler for Xmas and I promise I’ll be extra good…
November 3rd, 20121:06 am
I think we should let Bourn walk. Every year in the 2nd half he fizzles out. He is a talented player with potential to be great.
Atlanta is not the place for him. The Braves cannot afford to make
another investment like Uggla with so much non production it doesn’t
work. Look, Michael is good but the 1st out is a strikeout and the
2nd out is a roll out to the infield that he does not beat out. It was exciting to see him when he did beat it out though. It took 3 or 4 at bats before he figured out the pitching. Pitch recognition is so important. That is why Chipper was so Great. He saw and recognized pitches. I like Michael and I really wish him success and hope that the Phillies or Nationals give him his desired salary. I see they picked up Schaefer. He is a piece of work, a real piece (Not Nolie)LOL
November 3rd, 20121:24 am
The way I see it Born is good but he is not grand. He is not a 5 tool player. Offer him a contract 3 years and if he takes it cool, if not cool too. Let him walk. I do not want to sign Born to a Mega deal because he is not a Mega deal type player. Like I said, hes good but hes not great. There is a big difference.
November 3rd, 20121:36 am
I like resigning ROSS and Reed but Durbin may cost more then Braves want to pay. Ross is too old to catch 75 games before the ALL-STAR break! So a catcher is needed, if its GATTIS that’s great) The Braves find relevers pretty easy it seems. I think We need to find a big bat for LF or 3rd (Willingham,Ludwick, Hunter, Upton) A trade for HEADLEY 3rd from San Deigo would be sweet.
My guess the Braves know already who they are going after? We may be disappointed or surprized?
November 3rd, 20121:59 am
upsetum is wrong and the racist calling the braves racist. Do you also think the only reason a white person wont vote for obama is because obama is black? It wouldnt have anything to do with him being the candidate from the Democratic party and HE is VERY liberal, gay marriage supporting, abortion supporting and just tried over summer to take the last reference to God OUT of their platform……would it? Or that the defecit and debt are MUCH worse than when he took office after he promised to cut both in half but doubled the defecit and debt after he called Bush unpatriotic and irresponsible for what obama done TWICE as worse? AND while SPENDING hundreds of BILLIONS to get the results he got?! Unemployment almost 3% higher than he promised it would be? Who left fellow American patriots BEGGING and SCREAMING for help in REAL time in Libya but decided to sit in his hands and told one avy seal to stand down while hearing those same screams? The Seal defied those orders and saved 30 people, then lost his own life. Thewhole time they expected help to come….wouldnt YOU? So much for no fallen soldier or American left behind….Anyway…….But all you see and others like you(who are the actual racists)is that the only reason a white person wont vote for him is his skin color….let me tell you that if Herman Cain was running against Obama or Biden, I would vote for Cain.
If Bourn was younger maybe BUT he has been waiting on THIS contract his entire career and since speed slows and he will want a long term deal, I dont think the Braves can go there unless the price is FAIR and we all know Boras isnt fair. If he will go 3 years for 14 million, I think they would consider that. Braves NEED a GREAT leadoff man. Who IS fast…not WAS fast. WIll Bourn steal 40-60 bases each year and have a .400 OBP? If so id give him 14 million a year to play center field.
BUT it dont say a whole lot when you are in a contract year and you have a 2nd half at the plate like he did….
He plays hard which we love. But there is some moderate risk with Bourn. if we dont resign him it wont be because he is black you moron. Watch what happens when Heywards contract comes up…BUT if heyward wants crazy money he might not get it unless he makes some strides. Braves cant afford to spend that much except on pitchers or a big bat. People been talking about getting rid of McCann….i disagree.
Because when McCann hasnt been injured, his numbers are among the VERY best in MLB history for a hitter….not to mention he is clutch. NOW if he stays injured and doesnt have his swing, then keeping him would backfire. BUT if his muscles are ok, hes the BEST hitting catcher in baseball….hands down. You got to resign that. That might get you a nice hometown discount too after he scorches this year and if he is healthy, he will scorch. He ALWAYS has….
November 3rd, 20122:01 am
Best in MLB history for a catcher….
Are you kidding me??
November 3rd, 20125:14 am
Columbus..when did this become the site for you to spin your Obama hatred? This is a sports blog.
Obama is the best for this country but you are so immersed in your loathing that you can’t see that until he stepped into the office he had no idea the absolute mess Bush left him. Yes the debt is worse than he promised but there are a little over 1 million auto workers very grateful that he took that money and saved their jobs. Would like to rip your “issues” apart one by one but this is a sports blog after all.
Bourne is great but something was in the water the 2nd half of the season but there was no doubting his defense. Have to agree with the pundits about dealing with anyone Boras represents- no way Jose. Can’t say I’m happy to have Schafer back but his defense is great-how’s his attitude? Glad to see McCann back-hopefully he will be back to his normal McCann like years.
November 3rd, 20127:16 am
Two things that should not be missed regarding the Braves’ future prospects. The Giants have won the World Series two of the past three years. First, they don’t have a lot of high-profile stars, but play together as a team. Hmmm…that’s a mix of subordinated egos and great managing. Second, while they occasionally get the long ball, they are also willing to hit singles in key situations. Hey, Uggs, Mac, and J-Hey…are you listening?
November 3rd, 20128:05 am
I hope the Braves don’t sign Bourn, He is over-paid the way it is.
November 3rd, 20128:36 am
Good grief, I hope Bourn doesn’t accept this offer. $13+ million for a .275 hitting strike-out machine? Bring up Todd Cunningham. He’ll hit better, field just about as well, and steal a few bases when needed. I know Cunningham is on the radar for LF, but he can play CF too.
November 3rd, 20128:49 am
The Braves have no Superstar now and if they don’t get one….many empty seats in the park! People will not come out to see these bargain basement players on the roster now!

Bye Bourn. Signing him now would be like the Dodgers signing Andruw: Tons of cash for a player in decline. Bring on Pagan.
November 3rd, 20129:55 am
Love Bourne but the line has to be drawn somewhere. I admit to being prejudiced when it comes to any player represented by Boros. He symbolizes to me all that is wrong with baseball today – high pressure agents responsible for players forgetting who and what gave them their breaks and opportunities in the first place. But I digress – as much as I like Bourne, to pay him 13 mil is a travesty. To pay him more would be an injustice to whatever other young (and less expensive) talent they could attract.
November 3rd, 20129:58 am
@Are you kidding me??……Are you kidding ME?? You think 4 more years of Bronco Bamma pointing fingers at Bush will work out. As it turned out, Hope and Change are just a slogan.
Angel Pagan got me a free taco, I vote for him.
November 3rd, 201210:07 am
Somebody’s always gonna bring race into it.
Go get TORRII HUNTER!!
November 3rd, 201210:13 am
Yes do get Torri Hunter
November 3rd, 201210:15 am
Has everyone forgotten Andrelton Simmons? He has tremendous speed, above average power for a shortstop, and rarely strikes out. Sure he made a couple of bonehead plays in the one-game playoff, but so did Chipper and a few other Braves. At least we can blame his screw-ups as a rookie under pressure. Andrelton would be a stellar leadoff hitter. Prado in the 2 hole, Heyward, then Freeman in clean-up. It would be a fearsome top four.
November 3rd, 201210:30 am
Sign Bourn to three years – no way five. He wears down in the 2nd half of seasons. Won’t last five more years. Defense is what killed the Braves in their one game playoff. Some called it choking. Need to get better at short stop and 2nd base offensively to match the NATIONALS.
November 3rd, 201210:32 am
You criticize a guy for commenting on politics and rightfully so and then go on to praise Oblama. You are just as guilty. Let’s keep politics out of sports.
November 3rd, 201210:42 am
The question comes down to which of the young pitchers do we trade and what do we do from a free agent standpoint. Would we be willing to give up Delgado (or Teheran), Venters, Pastornicky and a younger prospect to get a Justin Upton level talent for lf. If so, the maybe Pagan or Victorino would be a fit for center. At some point, this group of young pitchers are going to lose value. I would rather trade one of them now, than see one get hurt or underperform and we receive less value for them. That’s what happened with Vizcaino.
November 3rd, 201210:43 am
“Hamilton has pop but remember that Turner Field is a pitchers park and a thumper like him would not be able to get 40 home runs.”
Folks pushing Hamilton….what a joke. Why would they want to bring in a guy who changes the dynamic in the locker room……with a monitor following him around to make sure he acts like a mature adult. C’mon, who needs this type of mess. It hasn’t worked for Texas. Unless you count useless division titles.

I hope Bourn does not accept the qualifying offer. Based on his 2nd half preformance, he would not be worth 13.3 mil. even for one year. Hopefully he is gone and the Braves never sign a player to a long term high $$$ deal again unless he is under 26 and is already established as a superstar and has no other issues. I see Heyward, Simmons and Freeman as current possibilities.
Also, don`t go after Hamilton. He would command too much and a deal that would be long term. Another factor is we need a right handed power hitter instead of left handed hitter.

[...] Braves make qualifying offer to Bourn [...]
November 3rd, 201211:31 am
Frankly, I wouldn’t waste alot of time (and money) on Bourne. He’s a very good ball player but Victorino or Pagan would do us just fine, maybe better. There’s really no reason to think that Upton (Tampa) will EVER perform as some seem to feel he will. And the Braves don’t need what he’s done. I think I like Pagan best but don’t see why he would leave SF if he gets more money. I’ve always disliked Victorino for the damage he’s done to us but would feel fine if that damage was working for us, especially to Philly.

What else does Constanza have to do to get a serious chance to be an Atl outfielder? He covers a lot of ground, hits pretty good, has super speed on the basepath, and is a team player. We can do without Bourn. We need an outfielder who does not let his hitting stop at the all star break. Constanza, Johnson, and Heyward would make a great outfield.
November 3rd, 201212:42 pm
“A .195 average with 36 strikeouts in his last 34 games?” Hey, we could get a Walmart “greeter” to put up those kind of numbers….or at least someone in AAA for a whole lot less money than it’s going to take to sign Bourn! It has NOTHING to do with race, by the way. If a white clown was hitting with equal ineptness, the Braves would be stupid to sign him to a big buck contract, too! You can’t possibly contend in any major sport league if your constantly throwing large sums of money at non-productive or non-impact players! These long term contracts many of these players end up getting are franchise “killers” and it all starts with GM’s and owners who “throw their brains to the hogs” by signing these clowns in the first place! Personally, I wouldn’t sign many players to anything more than a 2 year contract! I believe the Marlins won two Championships by adopting that philosophy!
November 3rd, 20121:00 pm
How does the $13.3MM QO amount get calculated? Braves didn’t come up with the figure, did they? Because they could just offer $1 and get a compensatory pick.

It’s in the article, paragraph #4 — “The qualifying offer amount is the average of the top 125 salaries in baseball from the previous season.”

The new rule for compensatory picks truly harms small and even medium market teams. Frankly, the offer the Braves had to make just to earn a compensatory pick is more than Bourn is truly worth.
The point about losing speed rapidly above 30 years of age is on the money. Rickey Henderson even experienced this drop off and he is the best lead off hitter in history. Bourn was never that good. Add in the strikeouts and if by age 33 the speed does drop to slightly above average, then Bourn suddenly becomes a way over paid player if he’s making $13 million a year.
Are you leaving?

Any President who’s policies help put over 12 million Americaons out of work for four years is someone who will never get my support.
That core fact is why so many agendists are putting out false issues to cover up the core truth of it all.

The idea that the Braves are too good for a player such as Josh Hamilton is a joke. He has a history, so what? He can play. If he is somehow interested in coming here Wren would be negligent not to check it out. Maybe he’ll take a bit less to be closer to home and get the heck out of Arlington.
The Braves could also use a guy like Dan Haren in the rotation. Right now they really only have a collection of 5-6 inning starters. It would be nice to have a solid starter who can give you over 200 innings. If the Braves are going to go with the starters they have, then the best strengthen middle relief.

Hope we don’t get burned by the qualifying offer like the Brewers did on K-Rod, millions of their limited budget for walks, hits and blown saves/games. Hamilton is a non-starter for the Braves due to money and/or health, substance abuse issues. We don’t have a manager to bring out the unrealized potential of either Upton brother, wish we did. We’re hamstrung by a clueless Fredi-the-Freeloader who will sit in the dugout with a blank look on his face like he did with his baby boy Ugglier. Most outfielders that we might acquire are weighed down by salaries greatly out of proportion to their production/value so, Wren will have to catch lightning in a bottle gambling on some role-player. Given Wren’s performance I’m not encouraged and will just have to hope like the last 57 years.

Pagan and guys like him (see Melky and Blanco) are more a product of great team balance and chemistry.
They added to the cocktail (mixers) they were not the booze (insert fav here). ATL needs a CF, LF, possibly a catcher short term and have a biblical question mark at 2B.
That is hardly balanced or the definition of great chemistry. Adding a Pagan to that cocktail will a have a lessor effect than adding him to a team like SF. The Braves need top performers who can carry teams versus complimentary pieces who get overwhelmed when they are asked to carry the team (see Uggla, Lowe in the rotation, etc)
This is challenge with Wren/JS designed teams, there is no design center. They adds piece parts and hope they fit in & catch fire in the process. Apart from Ross & 60% of Bourn’s games (as a Brave) attempts to make the pieces add up to more than the whole have come up short (offensively).
Hamilton & Bourn are pipe dreams under Liberty so we should give up the ghost there.
ATL will need to trade their way to more offensive pop and better chemistry bc in the FA market they end up over paying for guys about ready to face plant or just don’t fit.

I can’t take it, his name is Bourn, B-O-U-R-N, no freakin “E”, how he played over 200 games with half the people not knowing how to spell his name is beyond me.
