Just thinking about it more, if we ended up trading for 3B Olt and CF Gentry, what would the payroll be – $75 million? Assuming those were the starters at those positions…
Shane Victorino
Victorino is not far removed from being one of the best position players on a 100-win Philadelphia team, but a mediocre season for the Phillies and the Dodgers, combined with his age being on the wrong side of 30, leaves him decidedly lower-tier in the free-agent market. Even so, Victorino has three skills that could work out well for his next team.
He still has his good speed, having stolen 39 of 45 bases in 2012. He was also really good at moving from first to third or second to home on singles or first to home on doubles. In total, he advanced that extra base in 50 percent of his opportunities last season.
While Victorino is probably miscast as a center fielder — he was three runs below average in 2012 in center — his defense could play well in a corner position. In 411 innings as the Dodgers’ left fielder, he saved seven runs. That’s a tiny sample size, but it shouldn’t surprise anyone that a fringy center fielder can make a great corner outfielder.
Lastly, he hit a disappointing .255/.321/.383 in 2012, and that throws a red flag up over how good he’ll be as a hitter moving forward. But those poor numbers were the result of his struggles against righties. In fact, he crushed left-handed pitching to the tune of .323/.388/.518.
Be interested to watch the Niners next week on MNF vs. a good team in the Bears.
It’s tough to tell at times which players are playing poorly on the line of scrimmage, but I do not think Issac Sopoaga and Ray McDonald are having as strong of years as they had in 2011-2012. Just not seeing it. Justin Smith is doing wonders for Aldon Smith with that stunt play. Aldon has amazing quickness for a player his size but isn’t as strong in the upper body to bullrush OL – at least from what I’ve seen. Still a great defense. They aren’t the problem overall.
The playcalling from Harbaugh at times can be headshakingly frustrating. I think he’s a very good coach, but the Bill Belicheck comparisons are a bit premature.
I don’t even think he’s the problem. Unfortunately, they have the best roster in football when you eliminate the QB position – and that, is the problem and what’s keeping them from being an elite team.
We are not going to get Olt and Gentry unless we are offering them Simmons and Teheran at least. If we could get them for Teheran, the rev, and Ahmed the trade would already be done.
Teheran, venters/EOF, and Ahmed/pastornicky may get the discussion going but I just don’t see them trading those two away. Then again they could put Andrus in CF giving profar 2B and then when Beltre is done in Texas move Kinsler to 3B.
Shoppach cannot hit righties at all. Good sub for McCann when he returns from his shoulder surgery but it will be like watching Andruw and Frenchie swing at outside sliders when Kelly plays against righties
It will be interesting to hear some comments from Ross. He has made it well known that he liked playing in Atlanta but you can’t turn down 6 million for two years compared to possibly 2 million or less for one year.
Wren made an offer the first day that he could make one, he said so immediately after the WS. They looked around and got more than the Braves were willing to pay
haven’t heard, but they definitely made one as soon as they could. I think DOB even quoted him as saying they reached out right away. I doubt it was near 2/6.2 though
Problem with what Half Empty had to say is BRAVES don’t know how well BRIAN will play comming back from all his health issues, BRAVES should have signed ROSS……”
Correct….two uncertainties don’t make for a solid position next season. Not that some folks here would notice.
they do not pay big bucks to subs, never have. Ross is not worth twice what they can get another backup for, I’m surprised anybody on here thinks they would
“……Shoppach is rated as good as Ross just about and would be a lot cheaper than 3mil.
y’all should know by now that the Braves will not spend on subs……”
Sez you. Not spending on back-ups that are needed is short-sighted says I.
HINSKI, DIAZ and WILSON will be gone leaving FRANCISCO as the only potential bench player for 2013. And he’s not certainteed by any means. ROSS was the one solid player on the bench, and should have been signed.
right now we have McCann whos recovering from surgery and expected to miss a month of the season. but you always have to be prepared for set backs and so on. Our next option is Gattis whos a 26 year old so called prospect, mainly been playing DH and LF. Not much of a defender to begin with either. Bethancourt is only 21 and is defensive ready for the bigs but we cant throw him into the fire this early. Wren is likely gonna add a mlb caliber backup and a AAA Boscan type to go along with Gattis to get by until McCann returns.
We spent 5.5mil last year to have JJ stink it up, another 2-3mil on Diaz and ‘Ske. Surely we could have spent 3mil on Ross when we’ll be counting on a catcher not named Mac for the 1st month or so, and quite possibly more than usual after that. If his age was a concern, then get Doumit. Hes younger and is a versatile player. Just please dont go sign some none hitting tool as our OD catcher. Let CBet go in that case.
May get to do this in 2014… shouldnt hear complaints of having a poor hitting catcher if Cet is our everyday catcher then. After all, its all about the defense
I’m thinking that if they wanted Reed back all that much it would be done already, hope not cause I like the guy though he did not hit as well as usual after he got here
JJ was not a sub, and Diaz and Hinske both cost 3 mil together, they very seldom give more than a coupla mil tops , surely you remember how many SS they passed up last spring to sign about the cheapest vet they could
Having Boscan and a bad hitting C to start the season sounds good… then having Janish and the bad hitting C on the bench. Add in Whiff Francisco and possibly Mejia…. I hope Reed is re-signed and ready to go. Looks bleak

they have surprised me a few times both ways over the years, but in general I see what they are doing
KCis desperate for pitching help and we are desparate for either Moustakis, Cain, or Gordon (Myers ain’t going anywhere). The Twins are desparate for pitching and we need Willingham or span.
Seems like a deal could be made with one of these two teams that would really help our team.
Who would you choose and who would you pair them with to address our other issue.
Teheran and Ahmed for Moustakis. Delgado for span. Keep Prado in LF.
perhaps not, I’ve been saying all along that I’m not sure they will spend it all on new players
we can be fairly certain that the BU catcher and the BP won’t add all that much I guess
Moustakas? a lefty and a 90 OPS+ hitter with a bad OBP? I’m not giving up much for him
and Cain is already 26 and can’t start on a 72 win team, not giving much for him either
kinda risky acquisitions at this point IMO
The Falcons are my 2nd favorite team – the first thought I had when they lost was that the one consolation was that you had been so obnoxious that you deserved a touch of humility…
The more I read the rumors now. I think the Braves will end up with Victorino. Braves could be interested in Justin Upton, but “?” Torri Hunter is talking to the Dodgers on a 2 year contract.

I think I would prefer Shane in left instead of center
