Just thinking about it more, if we ended up trading for 3B Olt and CF Gentry, what would the payroll be – $75 million? Assuming those were the starters at those positions…
Add a pitcher to get us closer to 90mil.
November 11th, 20128:10 pm
Shoppach is rated as good as Ross just about and would be a lot cheaper than 3mil.
y’all should know by now that the Braves will not spend on subs
November 11th, 20128:13 pm
tie…. sweet. Yes, Mr. McNabb, ties can happen in the NFL
November 11th, 20128:18 pm
Victorino is not far removed from being one of the best position players on a 100-win Philadelphia team, but a mediocre season for the Phillies and the Dodgers, combined with his age being on the wrong side of 30, leaves him decidedly lower-tier in the free-agent market. Even so, Victorino has three skills that could work out well for his next team.
He still has his good speed, having stolen 39 of 45 bases in 2012. He was also really good at moving from first to third or second to home on singles or first to home on doubles. In total, he advanced that extra base in 50 percent of his opportunities last season.
While Victorino is probably miscast as a center fielder — he was three runs below average in 2012 in center — his defense could play well in a corner position. In 411 innings as the Dodgers’ left fielder, he saved seven runs. That’s a tiny sample size, but it shouldn’t surprise anyone that a fringy center fielder can make a great corner outfielder.
Lastly, he hit a disappointing .255/.321/.383 in 2012, and that throws a red flag up over how good he’ll be as a hitter moving forward. But those poor numbers were the result of his struggles against righties. In fact, he crushed left-handed pitching to the tune of .323/.388/.518.

The Rams vs 49ers was a contest to see which team would be the less stupid… nobody won.
November 11th, 20128:22 pm
Hopefully the SNF game is good. That was a bad watch.
November 11th, 20128:25 pm
Ward do have some inside info? Where do you get Brave Rays and AZ involved?
November 11th, 20128:27 pm
Not true. The Rams were way less stupid. They are also way worse than the Niners, which is good because otherwise my team would have lost by about 20
November 11th, 20128:56 pm
Be interested to watch the Niners next week on MNF vs. a good team in the Bears.
It’s tough to tell at times which players are playing poorly on the line of scrimmage, but I do not think Issac Sopoaga and Ray McDonald are having as strong of years as they had in 2011-2012. Just not seeing it. Justin Smith is doing wonders for Aldon Smith with that stunt play. Aldon has amazing quickness for a player his size but isn’t as strong in the upper body to bullrush OL – at least from what I’ve seen. Still a great defense. They aren’t the problem overall.
The playcalling from Harbaugh at times can be headshakingly frustrating. I think he’s a very good coach, but the Bill Belicheck comparisons are a bit premature.
I don’t even think he’s the problem. Unfortunately, they have the best roster in football when you eliminate the QB position – and that, is the problem and what’s keeping them from being an elite team.
November 11th, 20128:58 pm
We are not going to get Olt and Gentry unless we are offering them Simmons and Teheran at least. If we could get them for Teheran, the rev, and Ahmed the trade would already be done.
Teheran, venters/EOF, and Ahmed/pastornicky may get the discussion going but I just don’t see them trading those two away. Then again they could put Andrus in CF giving profar 2B and then when Beltre is done in Texas move Kinsler to 3B.
November 11th, 20128:59 pm
Giving profar SS that is
November 11th, 20129:01 pm
Shoppach cannot hit righties at all. Good sub for McCann when he returns from his shoulder surgery but it will be like watching Andruw and Frenchie swing at outside sliders when Kelly plays against righties
November 11th, 20129:08 pm
Ross will be missed. Wren should have made the early offer. In light of Mac’s situation.
Now it’s over and time to find a suitable replacement. How much will they have to pay?
November 11th, 20129:11 pm
Should be time for a new blog tomorrow if we are geting one every ten days.
November 11th, 20129:12 pm
David O’brien, If you haven’t seen it yet, great new show on CMAX called Hunted. Melissa George is awesome.
November 11th, 20129:15 pm
It will be interesting to hear some comments from Ross. He has made it well known that he liked playing in Atlanta but you can’t turn down 6 million for two years compared to possibly 2 million or less for one year.
November 11th, 20129:17 pm
Cue Simon and Garfunkel-The sound of silence
November 11th, 20129:19 pm
Or maybe Quiet Riot
November 11th, 20129:20 pm
Does anyone think after a 94 win season and making the playoffs that Fredi will be on the hot seat if the team stumbles early?
November 11th, 20129:21 pm
I could Carry on.
November 11th, 20129:22 pm
Or carry over

Maybe everyone is watching Dexter
Cuts like a knife
November 11th, 20129:39 pm
The first cut is the deepest.
November 11th, 20129:41 pm
Why not, since Yvonne Strahovski’s on Dexter tonight…
You would think Glavine could make one post on page 47
November 11th, 20129:42 pm
Jim that is reason enough
November 11th, 20129:44 pm
Certainly for me – I’m afraid I’ll be cooking for a while, so you might still be on your own…
Wren made an offer the first day that he could make one, he said so immediately after the WS. They looked around and got more than the Braves were willing to pay
November 11th, 20129:45 pm
I’m eastbound and down and we are going to do what they say can’t be done.
November 11th, 20129:46 pm
no Fredi will not be on the hot seat
November 11th, 20129:47 pm
How much was the offer
November 11th, 20129:50 pm
I hope Reed Johnson doesn’t slip away too.
November 11th, 20129:53 pm
Jim, I hope you enjoy your meal.
Nolie, I think you are right about Fredi’s status.
I am out for a while.
Yall be good.
November 11th, 20129:54 pm
haven’t heard, but they definitely made one as soon as they could. I think DOB even quoted him as saying they reached out right away. I doubt it was near 2/6.2 though
November 11th, 201210:17 pm
Only way I see Fredi not back in 14 is if the team grossly underperforms… and not due to injury. He has a reasonable option I bet he is back.
If Reed slips away I hope we get Hairston. More power with similar OPS as Reed.
November 11th, 201210:18 pm
Problem with what Half Empty had to say is BRAVES don’t know how well BRIAN will play comming back from all his health issues, BRAVES should have signed ROSS……”
Correct….two uncertainties don’t make for a solid position next season. Not that some folks here would notice.
November 11th, 201210:20 pm
what is up with you and Half Empty? He makes more sense than most on here
November 11th, 201210:22 pm
they do not pay big bucks to subs, never have. Ross is not worth twice what they can get another backup for, I’m surprised anybody on here thinks they would
November 11th, 201210:25 pm
November 11th, 2012
“……Shoppach is rated as good as Ross just about and would be a lot cheaper than 3mil.
y’all should know by now that the Braves will not spend on subs……”
Sez you. Not spending on back-ups that are needed is short-sighted says I.
HINSKI, DIAZ and WILSON will be gone leaving FRANCISCO as the only potential bench player for 2013. And he’s not certainteed by any means. ROSS was the one solid player on the bench, and should have been signed.
November 11th, 201210:29 pm
right now we have McCann whos recovering from surgery and expected to miss a month of the season. but you always have to be prepared for set backs and so on. Our next option is Gattis whos a 26 year old so called prospect, mainly been playing DH and LF. Not much of a defender to begin with either. Bethancourt is only 21 and is defensive ready for the bigs but we cant throw him into the fire this early. Wren is likely gonna add a mlb caliber backup and a AAA Boscan type to go along with Gattis to get by until McCann returns.
November 11th, 201210:30 pm
yeah sez me idiot. They don’t do it no matter what you think they should. its not an opinion as to whether they do or not, just check the payrolls
November 11th, 201210:33 pm
I’m surprised anybody on here thinks they would
There are people here who wanted to dump Mac and make Ross the starter…
November 11th, 201210:36 pm
yeah but I’m not really talking about what we want VJ, I’m talking about what they do most of the time. It is seldom the same thing thank God
November 11th, 201210:37 pm
Signing Reed Johnson is more important for theBraves than david ross
November 11th, 201210:38 pm
I certainly wouldn’t have been against re-signing him perhaps even at that price, but it is no surprise to me that they did not
We spent 5.5mil last year to have JJ stink it up, another 2-3mil on Diaz and ‘Ske. Surely we could have spent 3mil on Ross when we’ll be counting on a catcher not named Mac for the 1st month or so, and quite possibly more than usual after that. If his age was a concern, then get Doumit. Hes younger and is a versatile player. Just please dont go sign some none hitting tool as our OD catcher. Let CBet go in that case.
May get to do this in 2014… shouldnt hear complaints of having a poor hitting catcher if Cet is our everyday catcher then. After all, its all about the defense
November 11th, 201210:40 pm
I’m thinking that if they wanted Reed back all that much it would be done already, hope not cause I like the guy though he did not hit as well as usual after he got here
November 11th, 201210:42 pm
Mr Economics expert to the rescue again…
Gattis lost a homer last night because the game got rained out. He’s cooled lately, till that homer.
I’m surprised anybody on here thinks they would
I’m surprised that anybody on here would find it surprising about ANYTHING anyone would say on here
November 11th, 201210:43 pm
JJ was not a sub, and Diaz and Hinske both cost 3 mil together, they very seldom give more than a coupla mil tops , surely you remember how many SS they passed up last spring to sign about the cheapest vet they could
November 11th, 201210:44 pm
Having Boscan and a bad hitting C to start the season sounds good… then having Janish and the bad hitting C on the bench. Add in Whiff Francisco and possibly Mejia…. I hope Reed is re-signed and ready to go. Looks bleak
November 11th, 201210:47 pm
too much benefit of the doubt given I guess
November 11th, 201210:48 pm
Wow – TOBF has morphed into Mitchell at a young age…
November 11th, 201210:49 pm
I certainly remember that…. worked well. Great pinch-bunter, I believe. Defense was better than Rev’s but thats not saying much. His D was about avg. Id say.
November 11th, 201210:51 pm
Yow, thats scary!
November 11th, 201210:53 pm
I’m NOT talking about what you want them to do, I am talking about what we should expect them to do TOBF, that is all that really counts when the team is built.

November 11th, 201211:00 pm
I’m the dumbass when you can’t even grasp what someone says but read into their comments whatever you want to? You do that all the time on here to plenty of posters, perhaps it is just old age and we should cut you some slack.
November 11th, 201211:01 pm
Apt handle there genius.
November 11th, 201211:02 pm
Ooo, panties in a wad there genius?
And ass I unerstand part of the reason for gettin Wilson was because that kept us under budget…there was no more to spend. With 25+ mil to spend and having uncertainty at the catcher position, 3mil isnt really all that much. I dont see it keeping us from getting our OF targets.
perhaps we should cut him some slack since he is not only aged (even more than me) but having some bad family health issues?
November 11th, 201211:04 pm
And as long as I post here, my opinion will be given. Like it or not. Can I help it if you can’t type what you mean?
obviously they thought it was
November 11th, 201211:05 pm
You have no clue what the budget calls for this year, even though you pretend to know everything…
And, maybe to you 3 million is not a lot, but to some people it is…
November 11th, 201211:06 pm
I understand nolie… I just disagree with a few decisionsss. I need to become GM. Get a good staff around me and get to work. Someday…someday.
November 11th, 201211:07 pm
everybody has a right to express their opinions, even you rich, but you sure are a grouch lately and not just to me.
November 11th, 201211:09 pm
In 40 years, when you’re old enough…
November 11th, 201211:10 pm
I’m sure we all disagree with some decisions, my outlook is though if you are aware of what they are likely to do you might save yourself some disappoitment
they have surprised me a few times both ways over the years, but in general I see what they are doing
Im gonna go on record right now… I doubt our OF and bullpen ( and now BU catcher) acquisitions will reach 21mil. We’ll see what happens.
November 11th, 201211:13 pm
KCis desperate for pitching help and we are desparate for either Moustakis, Cain, or Gordon (Myers ain’t going anywhere). The Twins are desparate for pitching and we need Willingham or span.
Seems like a deal could be made with one of these two teams that would really help our team.
Who would you choose and who would you pair them with to address our other issue.
Teheran and Ahmed for Moustakis. Delgado for span. Keep Prado in LF.
perhaps not, I’ve been saying all along that I’m not sure they will spend it all on new players
we can be fairly certain that the BU catcher and the BP won’t add all that much I guess
November 11th, 201211:14 pm
And don’t think I didn’t see you LOLling at my team today…
November 11th, 201211:15 pm
Arent Jon daniels and jerry dipoto in their late 30s?….
November 11th, 201211:18 pm
Moustakas? a lefty and a 90 OPS+ hitter with a bad OBP? I’m not giving up much for him
and Cain is already 26 and can’t start on a 72 win team, not giving much for him either
kinda risky acquisitions at this point IMO
November 11th, 201211:20 pm
I’m sorry VJ… I like Eli and Cruz, but am still reeling from that playoff beating in January…. I dont mind seeing them lose
November 11th, 201211:26 pm
I would have kept Ross for that money.
November 11th, 201211:32 pm
The Falcons are my 2nd favorite team – the first thought I had when they lost was that the one consolation was that you had been so obnoxious that you deserved a touch of humility…
November 11th, 201211:33 pm
You must have more money than I do…
November 11th, 201211:47 pm
The more I read the rumors now. I think the Braves will end up with Victorino. Braves could be interested in Justin Upton, but “?” Torri Hunter is talking to the Dodgers on a 2 year contract.
