Good trade for bothsides. In the end Texas will end up with Upton.
Could we add something and try to get Nelson over Gentry?

Braves get: Spahn, Willingham, Doumit and Glen Perkins. Twins get: Delgado/Teheran, Hanson, Venters/Avilan, Gilmartin/Spurill and Cunningham.

Let’s trow in Ahem, Graham, LaStella, Bethancourt, and five straight years of first round draft choices.

It would dwarf the Tex deal! ;)

Be an interesting deal. Are the Braves ready to give up Teheran for that package?

I’m not sure if they think he’s worth more or not, but with the other young pitchers we have coming up I think I would. We would have our 3B for the next several years and Gentry is a great CF with blazing speed but hasn’t been a regular to date. Can he be? You never know until you give him a chance. He had a really good year, but mostly against lefties I believe. We would be set with a great young infield at 3 positions for the next several years. We could even move prado back to second when Uggla’s contract expires if needed.

Yepez…. resign him, he’s a decent hitter. He could be our backup. .282/.379/.394/.773 career line at AAA, .270/.356/.385/.741 for his minor-league career. Not sure how his defense/game-calling is though

FW is going to have to give up Delgado/Teheran to get a good CF, Delgado/Teheran to get a good LF, a lesser pitcher to get a catcher who could be the starter for the begining of the season (Gilmartin/Spurill) and Venters for Perkins is a win for the Braves.

Not sure they would trade him and his power at this time because they most likely are going to lose Hamilton and his power through free agency. Cruz’s defense isn’t that great either, although he has an excellent arm.

The Braves may well decide to trade either Teheran or Delgado, but they aren’t going to offer up all of Hanson and Maholm and Venters/Avilan/O’Flaherty and Gilmartin and Spruill like some seem to believe. Hairston could possibly be better… all comes down to cost, I’m sure. Both made about the same last season…..Hairston is 3 years younger. Their OPS vs. lefties and righties are quite similar, though Reed has a better avg. vs. righties. Scott has the power. Wouldn’t mind either way.

You’re probably right DOB, but I’d like to see something similar to get Olt and Gentry. Do you have an opinion on what it would take from our end? Or if we wanted to add players from both ends to make it a bigger deal? Robby Ross is a good looking young pitcher they used in relief this year, but will probably be a starter soon. If they sign Adam LaRoche, Mitch Moreland may become available, He’s a solid 1B and can play corner outfield as well.

There’s been a lot of call to trade for some team or another’s young prospects. That – I suppose – is all fine and well (nice to have good young players with upside signed for six or so years), however…..

I just looked at our 40 Man Roster and of the players likely to make the team this year, we have exactly 4 players over 30- Hudson, Maholm, Martinez, Moylan (IF he’s signed again) and Uggla.

I’m not certain that we need more rookies and inexperienced kids. We need a veteran presence – especially with Chipper, HInske and Ross gone. You need a mix and we’re starting to get bottom heavy on age.

Lew

November 11th, 2012

And yes, I do realize with Moylan it would be five – I just don’t see Peter being back.

Efrim

November 11th, 2012

I wonder why they wouldn’t want to trade Olt. Where does he fit? A platoon at 1st base with Mitch Moreland? That’s not even his natural position.

Bottom line is, Olt is clearly blocked by one of the more valuable players in the league in Adrian Beltre because of his defense and power. Makes way too much sense for Texas to trade Olt, imo.

But I don’t see Texas trading Olt for someone like Teheran. Not when they need frontline pitching, not prospects – they already have Martin Perez and Robbie Ross who can fill the back of their rotation.

braveslifer

November 11th, 2012
11:21 am

It would seem that you would lose a lot of leverage as a GM if you said you would trade someone. By saying he is untouchable they are either trying to keep his value high or he is in fact untouchable. In Olt’s case with him being blocked by Beltre at 3b and Texas having DH shored up I think it is an attempt to keep his value high. There is nothing worse then having to trade someone and getting 75 cents on the dollar. That being said Teheran or Delgado don’t seem like who the Rangers would target unless they could use them in a package for an OFer like Upton.

Laird was a preminum defensive C, but his thowing out SB rate has dropped a bit from a few yrs ago. Still calls a good game so there is someting there.

Buyer’s guide: Catchers
Intriguing free agents and trade targets among backstops

By Keith Law | ESPN Insider

Mike Napoli is a solid option as long as you don’t ask him to be a full-time catcher.
I only had two full-time catching options on my ranking of the top 50 free agents this offseason, and Russell Martin is on the cusp of full-time status, with only A.J. Pierzynski, who is about to turn 36 and coming off a fluky power spike, above him. It’s a terribly thin market that will probably leave several teams calling out-of-work NHL goalies to see if they might be available to spend 30-40 games behind the plate next season. Here are some part-time options in free agency I’d look, at as well as four young catchers who might be dealt this winter.

Part-time options

• Mike Napoli: I’d take a flier on the bat, but he’s not an everyday catcher, period. It’s not clear he can hold up physically, or that he can play the position regularly without affecting his offense, or that you would actually want his glove back there 120-plus times a year. But as a part-time catcher, more-time DH, he’s a good option for a team with a better regular catcher and a need for extra offense.

• Kelly Shoppach: You don’t see many straight left/right platoons behind the plate, with teams typically managing their catchers by pairing them up with specific starting pitchers, but Shoppach is so vulnerable to the slider away from right-handers that his best role is as the short half of a traditional platoon. He’s a career .267/.358/.510 hitter against southpaws; at any other position, there’d be a significant market for his services even though he probably wouldn’t crack 200 at-bats in a season. He’s a good match for a team willing to be creative behind the plate and use an extra roster spot on catching. Also, he needs to go back to Boston so I can hear fans there say “Shoppach” again.

• David Ross: Ross hasn’t seen 200 plate appearances in a season since 2007. At age 36, he’s not about to blossom into an everyday guy, but he’s a capable backup with some pop, a decent eye, and some ability to control the running game, nailing 40 percent of would-be base stealers since he joined Atlanta in 2009. For up to $2 million, he’s a good 40-50 games a year option who won’t kill you if your starting catcher gets hurt for an extended period.

Trade targets
• J.P. Arencibia, Toronto Blue Jays: I’m on record as saying Travis d’Arnaud wears the mantle of the Jays’ catcher of the future, although the last time he tried to put it on, he strained both shoulders and tore a hamstring. Arencibia is probably a backup but has enough power to be a short-term regular for clubs without a clear starter behind the plate. Given 500 at-bats — I’d say plate appearances, but for Arencibia those terms are equivalent — he’ll hit 20-25 homers with a sub-.300 OBP and adequate defense. That’s not exciting, but in a league where catchers hit an aggregate .243/.311/.399, Arencibia does have positive value.

• Devin Mesoraco, Cincinnati Reds: Dusty Baker loves to bury young players, and Mesoraco was no exception, playing down to expectations after losing what should have been his starting job in spring training. He had three straight seasons of strong offensive performances in the minors, with the swing and eye to maintain that in the majors, and he threw out at least 25 percent of opposing runners in each of those seasons. He’s still just 24 years old and needs to play every day for someone. If the Reds won’t give him those at-bats, they’re wasting asset value by leaving him on their bench.

• Hank Conger, Los Angeles Angels: Speaking of young players who can’t get a shot, Conger is so buried that some other team is going to have to start fracking in Anaheim to find him. He’s 25 and has yet to get even a half-season’s worth of at-bats in the majors. The Angels have devalued him to some extent by refusing to play him, and extending Chris Iannetta (a solid move) just solidifies their lack of faith in Conger to be more than a backup. He might not be a true switch-hitter, as he has never hit lefties well, but he could at least be the heavy side of a platoon. Come to think of it, he and Kelly Shoppach together could be a very productive Frankencatcher for some team that doesn’t want to punt the position entirely.

• Jason Hagerty, San Diego Padres: The Padres are in an odd spot, with their starting catcher, Yasmani Grandal, suspended 50 games to start the season after a positive testosterone test. (And folks said Mat Latos was the guy with bad makeup.) They’ll probably patch in the meantime with Nick Hundley, and their long-term catcher is probably defensive whiz Austin Hedges, who’ll start 2013 in high Class A and whose glove and arm are ready for the majors right now.

Hagerty, who posted a .728 OPS at Triple-A last year, has a chance to be a good big league backup who gets on base and makes a lot of contact, although a sore left shoulder limited his bat from the right side for much of 2012. He’s a switch-hitter with a little more extension and potential power hitting left-handed, although his right-handed swing is smoother. If healthy, the 25-year-old could easily start 2013 on someone’s Opening Day roster, and I think there’s a small chance he ends up a starter at his peak.

I hope they are not talking about Jacoby Ellsbury — injury prone, FA after ‘13 and a Scott Borass client.

No way he fits in here.

As for the Falcons — guess its time to move on & not make so many dum dum penalties vs Arizona.

Its not the loss — well, it is the loss that irks me but the dum dum penalties were the reason for it.

Coulda Woulda Shoulda — that was one of those games.

Next week we need ZERO dum dum penalties.

Might want to use Snelling more over Turner. Would be nice to see if its just the offensive line blocking badly or Turner not being as good. Figure it out now before we get to that one and done part of the year.

A lot of the talking heads jumping back on the saints bandwagon, they dug themselves a hole but they have a shot. I don’t think they make it. The east is down outside of the giants and the North likely gets at least one wild card, but Seattle is quietly playing well. Think they have an easier road to a wild card than the saints.

Doesn’t a three team trade that gets the Rays – Upton, D-Backs – Andrus and Rangers – Shields make some sense?

Just thinking about it more, if we ended up trading for 3B Olt and CF Gentry, what would the payroll be – $75 million? Assuming those were the starters at those positions…

best case scenario for the Braves is landing Justin Upton but its not gonna happen.

I guess Gentry could be the 4th outfielder and we can go get either Pagan or Victorino…..

Falcons do not “deserve to be booed.” They lost by four to the saints in NO. Geez. Sure, they had two shots at the end, but one game does not a season make. They’ve been playing very smart, mistake free ball til today.

Va, probably because we don’t have enough in our system. And we don’t want to give up Andrelton Simmons – which is very understandable.

i wouldnt mind Olt and Gentry, and Victorino. We would have plenty of combinations for CF,LF, and 3B. We’d still have plenty of money. Get Prado and Heyward locked up with extensions. Figure out the catching situation and possibly look at RH relievers.

Unacceptable for the Niners to allow two fake punt 20 yard pass plays on 4th down. Ridiculous.

Not a great game from the Falcons today…. those goal-line possessions hurt.

Giants LOL! Beat by the bengals…

Need the Rams to beat the 9′ers and the Bears to lose, I’ll be happy. Can still make a case for the Falcons to be #1 if the Bears lose. Still definitely the #2 team though.

Look at it though, lost by 4 points. We easily could have won that game. Probably better we lost now though… get the pressure off our back. Couldn’t see us winning all 16 anyway. Need a better run game, esp. in short-yardage situations.

Turner still sukks though, woulda canned him after last year. He is SO done.

“…..I’m not sure how a back up catcher is worth whatever it takes to sign him, or is a significant loss. put the money where it is needed most in starting outfielders
and they most likely did offer him a raise…..”

Well, your problem not mine. When you’re sure get back to me.

Problem with what Half Empty had to say is BRAVES don’t know how well BRIAN will play comming back from all his health issues, BRAVES should have signed ROSS.
