playing interleague games this season, there will be opportunities for DL appearances (for Willingham)
And I’m sure he’ll use it a couple times. We’ll get to see Gattis in LF
How many inter-league games are we gaining, 2? And I’m sure Mac and others may get a few of those… even if Willy got them all, based on averages, he’d play about 125 games.
It would be a gamble, and very bad for our hot stove speculations, but Wren could take a “keep your powder dry” approach to trading this winter. Sign Pagan, then go with this lineup:
1. Pagan CF
2. Prado 3B
3. Heyward RF
4. Freeman 1B
5. Uggla 2B
6. Ross/McCann C
7. Gattis LF
8. Simmons SS
Not ideal in L/R balance, but not ridiculous. It gives half a season to see how Gattis hits ML pitching. If he’s in over his head, you still have your pitching chips to make a trade at the break. If he does well, maybe you move him up between Heyward and Freeman, and then make a trade to upgrade whatever is broken at the time.
I guess the downside is, what do you do if Gattis flames out immediately or is injured. Trades probably won’t be available until some teams are buried. Limp through by moving Pagan to LF and playing Schafer in CF? Not sure Wren could take that heat.
oh they might put some into payroll, we’ll just have to wait and see
I would not give up what it will take to get Justin and I’m betting that Wren will not either
Replace Delgado w/ Teheran and replace EOF w/ Venters
I can agree with the first part… iffy on the 2nd. I love both guys, but if we had to trade one, it’d probably be EOF that goes. Costs a bit more. And for what little value relievers have, I’m sure he’s currently more valuable than JV.
You think they would atleast put some of that 25 million into the team. Atleast 20% damn…
I hope a good bit goes into scouting…. if only there weren’t limits on international spending
Or how about just getting Cody Ross for LF, and bring up Gattis when he is good and ready. You could always deal Ross later on if Gattis proves to be the real deal.
Theo is working to build the Cubs back up. Looking to rebound candidates on 1 year deal to flip at the deadline for prospects, could also deal David DeJesus and Garza for youngins. Might as well do it, they should just eat most of Soriano’s money and try and get a decent prospect or 2 while there at it. Gut the whole team with Starlin Castro being the only good player for a handful of seasons just like Ryan Zimmerman was for the Nats. lol
The Angel Pagan and either Cody Ross or Torii Hunter. Only problem with that scenario is we have to keep all our pitching, and you KNOW how badly folks on here want to deal off our pitching.
I don’t know, I think that he’d be a great piece to have not only for the bench but for a couple starts a week or so….he can catch, he can play LF, and frankly, I’d consider if I were them having him work out at 1b as he’d be a good complimentary to Freddie as well when he needs days off.
I think his bat could certainly help him work his way into the lineup many times and if nothing else, he certainly would make our bench much better from the right side….
A lot will be predicated on how he goes about ST and how he does there, so I wouldn’t put all my eggs into that basket and end up handcuffed like we did w/ Pastor though….make sure there is an Option A before taking a look at Option B
Efrim, yep. I think that’s what the Cubs tried to do by signing guys like Ian Stewart. They are trying to get value guys that they can flip to contenders for prospects.
They load up on rather cheap guys that have displayed skills but, for whatever reason, haven’t gotten the results to match those skills in hopes that some of them do play well enough to trade to a team willing to give up prospects.
Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com writes that Ike Davis may be pulled off the trade market following Lucas Duda’s wrist surgery.
The Mets couldn’t really be serious about trading Ike….
And the longer we get into the offseason without David Wright agreeing to a long term deal, the worse it is for Mets fans health. Although, I do believe they will come to an agreement. Seven years, $140 million is apparently what he is asking for on top of the one year, $16 million he is making for 2013. Eight years, $156 million – $19.5 AAV. .

I cannot see how anyone would be excited at all about signing Pagan.
He is not a difference maker, he’s cheap. What he is someone that’s been passed around from team-to-team and happened to have a “good” season..that’s all it was, good.
You know who he is?!?!?! He is Gary Matthews Jr!!! And whoever signs Pagan is going to be just as sorry in giving him whatever contract he ends up getting, just like the Angels did. The only thing is, if the Braves are the ones to give him the contract, they won’t do anything to counter the mistake-because they refuse to spend money on top tier players-once Pagan reverts back to what he is, an average to below average hitter.
I’m sorry I’m not sorry to “negative” but this post is what it is. The truth. If he were a difference maker, he wouldn’t have gone from the Mets to the Cubs back to the Mets then to the Giants.
He didn’t go from the Mets to the Cubs to the Mets to the Giants – at least not if Baseballreference is to be believed.
He played p[art time for the Cubs when he came up, traded to the Mets where he played part time for part of his tenure, put up a good year, a fair year and then with the Giants put up a quite solid year. Anyone who hits more than 55 EXH in that pitchers park actually had a pretty damned good year.
Will he be worth the money he’ll get? Probably not, but who wiil be?
Just because one uses in their youth doesn’t make them a full blown pothead or ok w/ it….
I did it once upon a time too….
But really, I thought we were done w/ all of that…..today is a new day and this isn’t AJC Political Blog Talk….
And Patrick…the idea is not that Pagan will be a difference maker, but coupled w/ a LF that both will make a difference in getting to where we need to be as a team…..in fact, I wouldn’t consider him the difference maker on the Giants team, but guess what, with him playing well in the playoffs and helping the team, they won the World Series…
Besides, the game is BASEBALL and its a TEAM game….there is no such thing as having 1 difference maker….just ask about any MVP over the last 20 years
You last post made me think of this discourse: THE TRUTH?
You can’t handle the truth! Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who’s gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago, and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Santiago’s death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don’t want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don’t give a damn what you think you are entitled to.
Patrick – Pagan may be an “average” hitter, but keep this in mind. In 7 yrs he has a .281/.333/.757 line. Bourn, in 7 yrs, has a .272/.339/.704 line. He’s not as fast, but I’d venture to say that he’d put the ball in play more often than Bourn and probably be a little better at situational hitting (a desperate need on this team). And he would be a whole heck of a lot cheaper.
this is slightly political but not really…do teams have honor codes about using pot? are players going to be able to use when they are in Denver on road trips? how will teams handle this?
You being who you are I’m certain you haven’t seen this years South Park…
Well, there was an episode where they featured Honey Boo Boo and James Cameron and talked about how low the bar has been set for humanity and that we need to raise the bar as a civilization…
And yeah, I tend to agree….the bar has been lowered greatly by the stupidity of our people….
And that is about as far as I’ll go into politics here
I shamefacedly admit to punching over to FOX News a couple of times this morning, just to chuckle at the spin. I know that was probably my bad angel taking over, but there ya go.
I figured that would be all glad-handing and back-slapping, so I chose to dispense with it.
I spent most of my night with CNN, and Soledad O’Brien always gets my attention in the morning, anyway. There’s something about watching a smart lady talk about the fiscal cliff, while wearing six-inch heels, that captivates me, LOL.
Patrick – Pagan may be an “average” hitter, but keep this in mind. In 7 yrs he has a .281/.333/.757 line. Bourn, in 7 yrs, has a .272/.339/.704 line. True. and number’s dont’ lie
Plus, I’d rather have Josh Hamilton patrolling Centerfield. But I think a time machine would be invented before the Braves would spend the money on a top free agent
The wildcard here is Liberty Media. If corporate management tells Wren to send the excess cash up the pipeline to the home office, then you could see schafer / cunningham in cf and gattis in lf Don’t think that this will happen but would not be surprised to see gattis in lf and only a portion of the extra funds spent to acquire a centerfielder.Maybe Wren spends a litle extra on the bench or he gets caught up in acquiring an Ace but baseball is a business and Liberty is interested first in the bottomline.
Never used. Never had a desire to. Have good friends (and children) who have. Not sure how I feel about the legalization of pot.
When one of my kids was put in a Drug Intervention program years ago after getting busted, we were taught that pot was actually quite bad for you, especially for younger people. So while I understand the argument about why it should be legalized, how does that compute with what we were taught in the DI program? Were we being lied to? If not then I can’t see the good in legalization.
I wonder why the stock market is down so low today? Hmmm
***************
it’s called the crooks shorting everything they can…..it’s a scam essentially.
The rich….they make the rules. But as last night again showed, doesn’t mean they always get their way.
I have been very careful not to say anything partisan. I’d dare anybody to categorize my statements as partisan.
DS1, didn’t mean to necessarily suggest that your statements were. I just didn’t want my comments to lead us down a discussion of specific policies, etc., at least not the hot button ones.
Back to the Braves…
I’m thinking they might go with the best centerfielder they can possibly get and get more of a solid, cheap, short-term solution in leftfield so that if Gattis is ready he’s not blocked and if Gattis proves he’s not a full-time type player and the other leftfielder is a bust, leftfielders are somewhat easy to find.
Ah well…voting is always a popularity contest. It’s not what you know and see with your own two eyes, it’s what others say you should know but didn’t see, and then the vote is cast.
But I guess that’s enough about the Gold Glove awards.
People, if we’re going to p–s each other off here, it has to be over things like the relative significance of advanced statistics, or maybe the amount of vinegar in a bbq sauce. This is escapism. Matters of real consequence need to be discussed elsewhere.

Murph, well there were plenty of folks who apparently weren’t as smart as those trained monkeys of which you speak, who refused to accept what the data suggested.
It’s amazing to see, isn’t it?

Wayne, just keep it going man and you’ll find yourself the same place Dentz is at. Having to switch IP addresses and scramble stuff to comment here. I’m sure you don’t want to risk that by making comments that are best made in other places with people who actually give a crap, no?

I spent most of my night with CNN, and Soledad O’Brien always gets my attention in the morning, anyway. There’s something about watching a smart lady talk about the fiscal cliff, while wearing six-inch heels, that captivates me, LOL.
