Rich,
All good here.
Any news on the grandson?
He’s going to a week-end with the BRAVES saturday-sunday…..he and 180 other possibles from the BRAVES mid-atlantic division. Hopefully, he will comport himself well. Something like that warning track get in right CF in YANKEE stadium in August and assist at 1B, or going 5-12 in a PERFECT GAME tourney in JUPITER last week.

Are you serious about SCHAFER? A ML deal?
If that’s the case, I’m hoping the BRAVES will draft my grandson in June. Plenty of opportunity in this organization. Course, they’ll have to beat out the ROYALS who appear serious especially since his showing on their scout team..

what is it that you think makes up OPS?
OBP and Slugging%. which is determined in large part by how many extra base hits a guy gets

OK so we have Schafer, now go after Lowe for the RH in the bullpen. With the money saved we sign Hamilton.
The Braves may or may not contend, but the clubhouse will be party central. In addition, DOB’s work load will increase to not only covering the Braves, but also monitoring the police blotters in every town they play in

Possibly, but I think the GIANTS will still make a very good FA offer to keep him. If we get lucky maybe we reel him in for 12.5 or so. He’s at 4.85 now.

3/30 seems a too much for Pagan. I mean he’s a solid player but isn’t great at anything. He’s a average defender and has been somewhat inconsistent offensively over the past few years.
His past 3 seasons where he played alot (Average Season)
143 Games 281/334/415/749 9 HR 60 RBI 33 SB
I’d probably go 2 years 15 million with a Mutual Option for 3rd year at 9 million or 1 million buyout.

I’d really almost rather trade for Peter Bourjos if the price makes sense instead of overpaying Pagan.. I think Bourjos if given the playing time could produce numbers around what Pagan will, also while playing much better defense. But of course it’d be risky still. But the defense is there for sure and if we could land the RH masher for LF that we desire I think Bourjos makes sense.

Give up your first rounder and sign BJ Upton to a megadeal or sign Pagan for nothing but the dollars in the megadeal.

I would not give Pagan 3 for 30, he is a good player but not a 10 mil per yr player.
Someone will overpay but let it not be us.
Boras will find a sucker — he always does.
If we give anyone 10 mil per let it be given to Prado who will be getting paid soon, I think its one more yr before we need to extend him. Or do we go cheep on him. Prado is a better player than Pagan.
It helps to have a nice post season and come off a real good yr on a WS champ team.

Comment From Lee
What do you think is more rational, high ceiling or high floor? Does it depend on which club?
Mike Newman: high floor is more rational, but you are likely to be left with a bunch of quality bench players and a solid average starter or two. A mix of both is the general rule. Push too far to either end of the spectrum and it can set back the future of the organization like the Phillies when they drafted a bunch of big ceiling guys who flamed out.
I think that’s a good way of looking at it. Phillies could actually use some Gilmartin types. It’s a bad system and they have had terrible luck with the athletes they have selected. Could probably put together a good track team though.

Part of the rationale for looking at Bourjos is that he had a crappy year last year, and may be very affordable because of that. By “crappy,” I mean he had a very good spring training, then started the first 3 weeks of the season in a bad slump, and got benched for some guy named Mike Trout. Then he sat on the bench because the Trout guy played fairly decent ball, and Bourjos only got playing time as a sub, and then hurt his wrist, was off for that, went down for a rehab assignment, etc.
So when people attack him as a bad option, I suppose there are certainly valid things to say, but to cite some bad stat from last year, like his batting average, slugging, or OPS, without explaining that he did not play much is either ignorant or intentionally misleading. If he had had a 2012 like his 2011, then there would be no way in hell we could afford the players and prospects it would take to get him.
So say something relevant.
