Real happy for Heyward. Great year for the phenom. Never thought Bourn would win though. Coaches look at offensive production with GG. Bourn went down like the Hindenburg. Prado, sad but maybe true, isn’t viewed as an outfielder per se. His flip flopping of positions killed him. Not to mention having his GM constantly proclaiming his best positions are 2nd/3rd. The voters were correct in their awards as concern the Braves players. It was an honor to be chosen as a finalist though for sure. Congrats to LaRoche too.

DS1 So truthfully, he had 1 incredible month. 3 pretty good months. 2 OK months and 6 really, really bad months.
i disagree with this assessment. you you are going to do it based on month to month and have 4 categories, you have to give him 2 incredible months. 2 months where he OPSed over .950. thats MVP territory. 1 month where he batted between .850-.950. thats a great month. 5 months where he hit between .750 and .850…those are good months. and 4 terrible months, where he hit below .750…usually waaay below.

The Angels are aggressively trying to trade starters Dan Haren and Ervin Santana, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports.
How much are they really expecting to get for them? Would a team sign Ervin Santana to a one year, $13 million dollar deal? Haren for one year, $15.5 million? I guess Haren is more likely.

Shaun, didn’t get to see Jones or Trout play a lot. Just the highlights. Trout appears to be for real and with that lineup, pitchers will have to pick their poison. If that team meets its offensive potential, they will be even more dangerous. Trout will get plenty of accolades along the way.

What would Haren’s price be if he hit the open market? Seems with the injury issues $15.5mil is pushing it.

I love when people try to look astute by pointing out that their team “could have gotten” so-and-so selected ahead of the actual player their team did in a particular draft. Especially when that player wasn’t the third or fourth pick or whatever and their team took a dog in the first or second spot, but rather the player they’re referring to was an end-of-first-round pick, or even later than that.
In this case, Mike Trout.
Trout was the 25th pick of the 1st round. Not only did the Braves, who selected 7th (Minor), skip over Trout, so did about 20 of the other 30 major league teams, including the Angels themselves (they had consecutive picks and took the great Randal Grichuk with the pick ahead of Trout). A couple of teams had two picks in the top 24 and bypassed Trout.
Among the other teams not nearly as smart as they might’ve been with second-guessing fans as scouting director: Giants (took Zach Wheeler 6th), Nationals (took Drew Storen 10th), Rangers (took Matt Purke 14th), Marlins (took Chad James 18th), Cardinals (took Shelby Miller 19th).
The Royals took Aaron Crow 12th. The poor Diamondbacks, with back-to-back picks, took Bobby Borchering 16th and A.J. Pollock 17th.
I mean, can you believe all these teams could be so dumb?

IIRC, wasn’t the reason Trout fell due to the high cost to sign him? Not too sure about that.
Maybe if we hadn’t been so cheap… we wouldn’t necessarily need an OF, we could get that SP. Mike Minor is a future #3-4 (basically, Maholm), and Trout is gonna be a MVP-type player for years to come.

I’m just thinking maybe he’s expressing disappointment more than arguing that the Braves should have known better.
But as far as your overall point, I do think folks are getting in to some gutsy territory by criticizing front offices. They have millions of dollars at stake with almost every player decision they make and they have tons of information. Listening to folks who are insiders and who have inside knowledge of the inner workings of front offices, I’m very careful with my criticisms of front offices. I want to say that I’ve heard the weather was unusually rainy in that area during Mike Trout’s draft year so scouts had a hard time getting a look at him, in addition to teams viewing players from the Northeast with some degree of skepticism because they aren’t able to play baseball as much as they do in warmer climates and the fact that Trout played other sports and teams may have been concerned about him pursuing other sports.

I find that hard to believe, considering Uggla wasn’t traded to the Braves until November of 2010, a little less that two years ago.
Also, by the offseason of 2010/2011 Trout was regarded as one of the top 2-3 prospects in the game. Baseball America had him as the #2 prospect in baseball prior to the 2011 season. So I don’t think there was any time during Uggla’s first season with the Braves that the Angels would have given up Trout for Uggla and Jurrjens.

It’s possible, if not probable, that anyone outside a front office would have made a worse pick that year than Van Poppel, if they even knew who Van Poppel was.
Also, a lot has changed in 22 1/2 years since Van Poppel was drafted. Front offices are smarter and have a much better idea as to what they’re doing.

Alright I wanted to run something by you guys as I’ve been thinking about this the last couple of days. I know most/many and the big guy DOB have said no way Wren goes after Hamilton but can we be sure? Wren has said he will be looking at premium players and he has approximately 25 mil to work with DOB has said even after all player have received raises. Now I know the big arguement is not to strap the Braves down with one big contract but who says that has to happen.
Hamilton hit .285 with 43 HR’s last year and by some was said to have a bad or inconsistent year. I know he comes with baggage but he still puts up big numbers. I think we can all agree the guy wants to be out of the spotlight and the big market teams are not interested, nor I would assume he would be to go there anyway. Hamilton is from North Carolina and may want to be close to home and may actually have grown up a Braves fan. Atlanta media is not that bad and he would be out of big market team spotlight here. The Braves have the $ to spend finally. So with all that being said what if Wren approached him with an offer of like 4 years with option for a 5th year at like 17-18 million a year. We need an impact bat and even though he’s a lefty he still puts up big numbers every year. Then Wren can trade for a CF’er who hits righty.
I just haven’t been impressed with the names out there as impact bats other than J Upton and it doesn’t look like a good match with Arizona. I just remember in years past Wren is usually pretty vocal in saying he won’t go after so and so big name player and I have yet to hear him say Hamilton is out of the question. I’m just saying it MIGHT be a match. The $ is there to spend and no big market teams to haggle against.

Real quick, DOB – I really appreciate your work. Really do. And don’t take the following to heart and I know you won’t because that’s the way you have to be in this business. But I gotta say….
I mean, can you believe all these teams could be so dumb, Efrim? Maybe they all should get T-shirts made up with “Coulda had Trout” on the back, as you suggest for the Braves?
Let me get this straight…Lew decides to post a nice little jab at me with his 10:43am – which was perfectly fine because it was in good humor, I think. And then DOB decides to jump all over it. Which is again, fine with me because I’m a bigger boy than I used to be and can take it.
But in reality – I have never, not once given the Braves crap for passing on Mike Trout at #7. Not once. Shelby Miller? Yes, wish we got him instead of Minor and I still feel this way. I also wanted Zack Wheeler, Tyler Matzek and Matt Purke as I wanted a HS pitcher with more upside and less of a floor because I’m all about shooting for frontline pitchers that high in the draft rather than safe, mid-rotation starters. Was willing to take that risk. But really, DOB, I was joking with Lew – which you clearly didn’t get, about sample size and not jumping to conclusions on a player from a 3 month sample. Whether it’s Mike Minor or Michael Bourn, I take my time with certain players in assessing whether or not they are this or that. I try not to get excited off short samples like, well, you do for example with Bourn’s initial 2.5 months or Minor’s one start in Zona in April(archives are to the right of the blog if you’d like to reference – although I don’t want to get Random on you).
DOB, in fairness, I don’t know that Efrim has argued that the Braves should have known how good Trout was going to be and therefore it was a huge mistake on their part not to draft him at the time. Maybe he has. I certainly don’t want to put words in his mouth either way.
Nope. Never did. Not seriously, anyway. Trout played in New Jersey and it’s not easy to scout players NJ and up through New England. And Trout wanted a larger bonus above slot – Braves don’t do that.
Good grief, anyone who didn’t realize that Efrim was making a joke about Trout (one that I’ve made many times; heck, I may have been the originator) needs to re-insert their humor chip. Mercy.
Yes, absolutely. But based off of yesterdays comments, I think anything said in a negative manor about Mike Minor was going to get pounced on. And it would be fine if it was warranted hatred. But not my response to Lew. That was all in good fun.

Efrim: My bad. I didn’t notice the emoticon until now. Figured you were just being another Monday morning QB, etc. Sorry about that, my man.
And anyone who can’t understand how I’d misread a comment when about 80 percent of them here are negative and caustic, well, then you’re not seeing it from my perspective. It just gets old reading so many “fans” constantly deride and denigrate players, team moves, etc., whenever a game, week, or in this case the season (or postseason, since MLB calls the Wild Card game a postseason game) ending in disappointing fashion. The same folks who do almost nothing else but suggest firings and trade scenarios that will never, ever be discussed.
But again, sorry about that Efrim. Just re-direct that comment to any of the many who’ve made such a comment in earnest, rather than in jest as you did.

DOB,
Not sure why the nasty comment to Efrim about his Trout joke.
Folks on the blog have been talking about Minor being drafted to high and that we ‘could have had Trout” for quite a while now.
There are many on this board that like Minor, but feel he was drafted to early and the Braves could have drafted a higher ceiling guy in that spot.
I totally understand that it is speculation on out part if Minor was drafted to high or not.
But to smash Efrim to pieces over a joke is a little much especially when he is one of the most astute and faithful supporters of this blog.

Then, I believe I may just come up with a few nuggets on that bumb. See who I can irritate the most.

At least one person didn’t, obviously.
Proud of myself. Had one thing in that response that I took out after thinking it through a bit.

In my Tom Jackson voice, “Come on, man!”
DOB, you know me man. Been on the blog since winter of 2006 and have spent countless hours reading your articles. My wife, who doesn’t know you or any of the regs here, jokes with me asking “how is DOB’s day is going?”
I’m not one of the negative in-gamers or crazies who is a blowhard and such on here. I think there is a good faction of regulars on this blog who are smart peeps man. And I know you can split between them by remembering their monikers and such. The guys that have been here a long time.
Just had to say that. Appreciate you, this place and all the regulars here.
And that one day, my work will find out how unproductive I am…..that should be a good conversation.

“as I wanted a HS pitcher with more upside and less of a floor”
I haven’t read the past 15 boards or so and I may be stepping into something I don’t fully understand. Acknowledging this, I was someone who posted that entire two-day draft and I can confirm that there were several people who posted viewpoints such as the above. Minor was viewed as safe but limited. While I vehemently disagreed with the opinion then and still do this day, Steve, whatever Cuba’s actual poster nick was and Efrim were all posters who were consistent in their arguments against the selection. Saying any of them is demonstrating a hindsight opinion now is patently false. Now, several of the players mentioned in Minor’s place could not hold a candle to him at the moment but that’s a different discussion for another day.

And fwiw, I don’t recall a single person talking up Trout here on the day of the draft.
