From the last blog,
Would be very fitting if the cards lost this series by blowing it. They have spent the last couple of years capitalizing on everybody else’s mistakes, this time they are the ones that blew it. They’re a good team but this run over the last two years wasn’t entirely of their making.

I don;t think the Cards are a great team, but they are a pretty good team playing in the Central who have been the beneficiary of circumstance.
Still have to give them credit for winning the big gmes they have but I still think the Braves were the better team in both yrs, but we did not get it done.
Is it sour grapes??? Yea, sort of.

I am rooting for the Tigers cause I like that owner Mike Illitch who has been a great sports steward in his ownership of both the Red Wings and Tigers.
Jim Leyland helped bring that franchise back on the map.
Would we not love to have an Illitch in our city. Well, we would still have our hockey team had we had a guy like that on our side.
At least we do have Art Blank, that is one nice thing to say about ATL sports ownership

Had an idea today. What about a trade for choo to play left and leadoff. He has a lifetime obp over 380 and has 18 to 20 homer pop. He does struggle against leftys but we could through johnson in there every once in a while. He stands to make around 8 mill in arb and will be a free agent after 13 so it could be a one and done but my not take as much to get him because of that. Now if you dont like that part of it you’ll hate this we then could sign upton to play center for around 12 to 13 mill. Leaving anywhere from 7 to 10 mill for bull pin and rotation upgrades.

Put Gattis on the bench. Guy sounds like he’s been tearing it up in the minors. Better him than Hinske, Overbay or Baker. And if he’s not the answer then big deal. He’s a high reward, low risk guy. Start him out on the bench, and see what happens.
Can’t wait for Beachy to get back, I know he’s anxious, but take it one day at a time Brandon. You are one of our three future aces.
If Beachy can regain his form and Meds, and Minor can pitch like they have been, we may have the next Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz. Maybe not as good, but we can finally have three shut down pitchers again that our young and about to enter their prime.

You still have not said who you would go after. 380 obp and 800 plus ops also speaks for its self. Something we didnt have on our team last year. So yes it would be sick to add that to our team.

actually if you think of Choo as a leadoff guy, he makes some sense. Even though he is weak against LHed pitchers, his OBP is still around 340 he just hits with a lot less power. course he’d have to play LF so if the LFer is the lead off guy what does the CFer do since I can’t think of any feared RHed hitting CFers available. Maybe Choo hits second?
However from a practical standpoint the thing is that he only has one year left and would likely cost more in trade than they would want to go.

Gattis’ pre-injury at bats last year would be great even in Little League. That is better than one HR every 11 at bats. (Better than Babe Ruth’s number, and better than McGwire/Bonds steroid juiced numbers). Of course he can’t maintain that over a full season even in AA, and 2013 in ATL would be a stretch for him. But you certainly have to keep a close eye on him. If he just falls in our lap next spring as a starting left fielder with pop, don’t look for reasons to say no.

Giants in the World Series means that Pagan’s price goes up, unless he really flops. Just moderately good play, plus the constant TV exposure, will cause his price to rise. Especially if the Giants win, in which case he will be viewed as a “proven winner.” His price will go up even among sophisticated front office people. I reckon a Giants win in the Fall Classic would cost us a cool million per year if we sign him.

nolie thats is why I said upton for center for his power. He would give j hey and freeman just enough protection from lefties. As far as what choo would cost im not sure what they will want for him as they know he will not resign with them. I was thinking maholm and a sprull type prospect might be enough. mlbtraderumors seem to think any roster player would do so a forth starter and a third to forth starter prospect might do.

So if the Braves make a qualifying offer to Bourn and he doesn’t accept, and then the Braves sign him to a long-term contract, the Braves would forfeit their first round pick?
I’ll call that a win for the players and agents. Probably won’t see as many qualifying offers being made, which should open up free agency.
So I’m guessing if the Braves make a qualifying offer, we can probably assume they have no intention of bringing Bourn back. Can’t imagine he would accept a qualifying offer.

I love Carroll, truly I do, but I don’t think this is correct.
Rob P

I read that as well and found that weird. After doing some research, the Braves would NOT lose their first round pick if they make a qualifying offer to Bourn and he signs elsewhere. Summarized well here:
Once a team makes a qualifying offer, the player has two choices: he can accept the one-year deal or decline in it search of other offers. If he declines the offer and signs elsewhere, his new team will have to surrender a top draft pick (the selection doesn’t go to the player’s former team).
Teams that sign free agents who turned down qualifying offers will surrender their first round picks. However, the forfeited picks don’t go to other MLB teams. Instead, the first round simply becomes condensed.
Note that it says NEW team. Would be overly punitive to lose a pick for re-signing your own player. Don’t think even the players union would want that.
Efrim

Bourn could still sign with the Braves if he doesn’t accept the qualifying offer, but the Braves would have to forfeit a first round pick.
Carroll, are you sure about this? If the Braves make a qualifying offer to Bourn, he doesn’t accept it, but then he signs with his own team later in the offseason – the Braves have to forfeit their OWN first round draft choice? This is the first place where I have seen that documented, and to be honest, it doesn’t make a ton of sense, but maybe your right?

Bourn could still sign with the Braves if he doesn’t accept the qualifying offer, but the Braves would have to forfeit a first round pick.
Are you sure that’s accurate?? I will admit that I haven’t read the new rules all the way through, but I’d be very surprised if a team was penalized a draft pick for re-signing their own free agent. The entire point of the process is to give teams an upper hand in resigning their own guys.
ncscoots
October 23rd, 2012
9:24 am
The other thing is, the Braves don’t have to make the one-year offer at the qualifying minimum. As long as their offer to Bourn has an AAV at or above the qualifying minimum, it counts. Thus, if they plan to offer him 5/$75MM in any event, they can use that as a qualifying offer and have that small window of exclusivity to at least make the guy think a little. Bird in the hand, and all that.
