Hello everyone! I think Wren will get us that bat, but he won’t spend more than he has too. He wan’ts players, but players that wont end up like Lowe, or K.K. He will probably get us a players around 15 million, and some one aroun 7 to 12 million. I don’t think Wren is going to over spend…..We need to think about players in the range of Wrens’ thinking.
They replied that they had a responsibility to broadcast the debate… even though no less than 6 other channels were also showing it.
They do indeed have such a responsibillity. Over-the-air broadcast licenses are held “in the public trust”, and, regardless of Fox News , those stations owe a debt to inform the public. Playoffs do not count as a civic responsibility.
What would make you think Mac will leave? I don’t get that impression at all. I see him bending over backwards to stay.
Say he comes back and has another subpar season… would the Braves even offer him a multiyear contract? I dunno. Hard to say. Part of that would depend on Bethancourt.
Say he comes back and puts together a monster season… could the Braves even afford to offer him a multiyear contract? Some of that depends on roster moves made this year and the budget going forward. There could be a few holes to fill in 2014 with Hudson and Maholm no longer under contract.
I think BMac will be the number 1 storyline to follow after this season as so many of the Braves moves will depend on what happens with him.
DS1, I think we get in to dangerous territory when we start assuming that we know whether a player isn’t in the best shape he can be in. Now, it’s different if we have something solid and tangible to go on. But there are bad-bodied players who perform just fine and probably work harder than people will ever know. There are, what, 700-800 big leaguers. To pretend they are all going to have the same body, even if they all work very hard, is just naive.
I think we have this need to explain things and make everything a contest of will because we are uncomfortable with the fact that, just by chance, players get hurt or don’t perform to their talent levels. Sometimes there is not some deep explanation that has to do with will power or a player doing a lousy job controlling things. Sometimes sh** happens, as uncomfortable as it makes us that the players involved don’t have omnipotent control over every pitch, every batted ball, every play that happens on a baseball field or all the muscles and tendons and ligaments in their bodies, whether they are going to be strained or pulled or torn. I’m starting to think some would think that the guy who brought the lottery ticket and didn’t win didn’t because he did something wrong. I guess maybe we live in a more superstitious world than I thought and that I’m comfortable with.
My guess it will be some like a Ludwick type player, or Kevin Y. Some one that bats right, and plays 3rd base, or LF, or CF. Wren is not going to make a fool of himself.

Murph, that may have something to do with it, but I think it’s deeper than that. Many of us can’t accept that most players try hard and really want to do their best for their teams and for themselves and the chips fall where they may. We just don’t like that possibility. We want to believe that players succeed and teams win simply because they can will themselves to be great and to win, and that’s primarily what separates one player from another.
Most players fight and claw and try hard to be great, to stay in the majors, to be as great as they can, to help their teams as much as they can and the results just happen. The effort and the will often doesn’t match the results, otherwise I would bet many of us here would be big leaguers, if it was just about effort and will power. I think it’s in our nature to not want to accept the role of chance. Otherwise people wouldn’t have made up superstitions. You just hope eventually data and science will win out. Sorry to get deep there. But I think sports is a good place to see this side of folks.
+ an AL team can offer him more years and money… the Braves probably give him 3-4 w/ an option. He’s a catcher here, and can’t play any other position frequently. If he goes to the AL, he can DH, and possibly play 1B.
So because I don’t watch the debate means I don’t know what’s going on or care about the country? I just really dislike how polar American politics have become and I feel like the debates epitomize that.
While I don’t agree with the anti-McCann clan I understand where they’re coming from. There’s no guarantee he’ll return to form or be healthy (he’s been hurt the past year and a half) and his salary is increasing.
There is no guarantee that any one player will be healthy in any given season. That’s why you do the best you can to go on what is the most likely possibility.
But some don’t want to take in as much information as possible to get at what is most likely. They’d rather assume based on their personal biases, beliefs and views.
I wasn’t implying that in your case. But you’ve gotta admit there are a LOT of folks out there that really don’t have a clue. How many of the people at a restaurant at 7:15pm on any given night even know who the Vice President is?
I think we’d all be shocked at how uninformed the majority of US citizens are. (why am I ending sentences with verbs??)
I think the Murph Manifesto may be raising its head. Soon, informing the public will be reduced to box scores and ESPN bottom-trailers.
I forgot about the Manifesto. Need to dust it off and get back to work.
I’m all for informing the public, but c’mon, this is America. Preempting baseball to broadcast a debate already being broadcast by a half dozen other stations is intruding on my civil liberties. And yes, watching baseball is a civil liberty… according to the Murph Manifesto. Home of the free? Not free to watch baseball when I want. Home of the brave? Not when my local network is too lily-livered to set themselves apart from the pack and broadcast something other than the debate.
The way I see it. Is Mac, had one bad year. You can’t base things off one season. Dale Murphy had some up, and downs. It happens to all players. It’s too bad Mac, didn’t get surgery sooner, but I can understand that a player wan’ts to play.
I’d almost agree with you that one station might be bold and broadcast your game, but in this time and age, the networks will have too much invested to do so. You might be surprised how many people don’t give a rats azz about baseball too.
Bethancourt would do a good job until Mac gets healthy. I would be O.K. with that. No need to get catcher.
Bethancourt is really young, and hasn’t played very much at the higher levels of the minors. If he was on the Braves next year, it would probably be as a backup to Ross, how is a better player at this point. That being the case, Bethancourt will probably develop faster if playing every day against lower level talent, rather than sitting the bench 5 out of 6 days in Atlanta. Better to spend a small amount for a guy who can catch and play another position for a month or two while waiting for Mac to return, and allow Bethancourt to continue to develop so that when he does come up it’ll be because he’s fully ready.
Isn’t that the season that he caught a fly ball with his bare hand and fired it back to the infield? I don’t remember many fielding plays from way back when, but I remember that one.
Chipper Jones has retired and Brian McCann’s potential future in Atlanta will likely be limited to the 2013 season.
Bowman has always been strongly on the side that McCann will not return to Atlanta after 2013. I think it’s way too early to have a strong opinion one way or the other.
Amazing – we need offense and half the blog is either for trading for Bourjos, a CFer who can’t hit and letting Mac go in favor of Betancourt, a catcher who can’t hit. But if we pitch and play defense, right? Yeah, that’s been working, hasn’t it?
Bowman has always been strongly on the side that McCann will not return to Atlanta after 2013. I think it’s way too early to have a strong opinion one way or the other.
I think it is too early to tell as well, but I see where Bowman is coming from. From a financial and a health perspective, it probably is more beneficial to McCann to play in the AL where he can DH a few times a week to save his legs, and it probably makes more sense for Atlanta to not pay the price that McCann will surely deserve in his next contract. Hopefully things are amicable, but I can certainly see where the relationship might not continue.
Been a while since I’ve been on here. Hate to see how the season finished but that’s the nature of the game. Glad to see we have a little money to spend this offseason. A CF I like and think would make an impression in the lineup is Denard Span though I don’t know that the Twins would make him available. The trick this offseason will be finding that 4 hole hitter.
One thing I don’t think many are taking into account is this -
Chipper’s performance – both offensively and most certainly defensively, will be adequately replacey Prado, at least partially because Martin will play a full season and Chipper was only playing 100 games and some of them as a PHer only.
However, what we WILL lose with Chipper’s departure will be his influence and clubhouse presence – his team leadership. But that is something McCann can definitely bring to the table.
I think Mac will sign a club friendly extension (if indeed, he’s offered one). Even in his worst season, he hit over 20 HR, something most catchers DON’T do. Add to his power threat his clubhouse leadership (and it would be his team now) and veteran presence and I think he’d be a worthwhile candidate for an extension, albeit maybe not at market value.
Hopefully things are amicable, but I can certainly see where the relationship might not continue.
A lot of it depends on how our two young LH hitters perform in 2013 as well. They both go .850+ and the front office will think differently about the makeup of the offense in 2014 and beyond. Also depends on the contractual situation of the players we acquire this offseason. And of course, Bethancourt and Gattis – although to me, if McCann isn’t back in 2014 – we’ll be looking at a stop gap replacement until Bethancourt is ready. That’s why it’s just too early to feel strongly one way or the other.
However, what we WILL lose with Chipper’s departure will be his influence and clubhouse presence – his team leadership.
I know this is me reading too much into things, and I have no idea what Chipper said in the clubhouse on the fateful Wild Card Friday, however… his public statements about knowing it was time to hang things up didn’t come across too well, especially from the team leader. Who then played such a big part in the team losing the game.
I’m sure he was a great team leader, but his actions on that Friday put a bit of an asterisk next his leadership abilities in my book.
Chipper’s performance – both offensively and most certainly defensively, will be adequately replacey Prado, at least partially because Martin will play a full season and Chipper was only playing 100 games and some of them as a PHer only.
I don’t think it’s fair to say that “Chipper’s performance will be replaced by Martin”, since that leaves you with the question “Who will replace Martin’s performance?”
Efrim, agreed. Too early to discuss a McCann extension, at least at something close to market value. A lot will depend on what McCann will and is able to command. And whether he’s back or not, Bethancourt is not the sure-fire replacement. They may need a stopgap. They may have to abandon the idea that Bethancourt is the catcher of the future, altogether. But it’s a too early for all that.
RC – True, but totally different question. But yeah, I should have added something to the effect of “depending on who we get for LF”. But that wasn’t the point I was making, either.
That’s reading way too much into it. That was an incredibly emotional week for Chipper with all sorts of pressure. He’s never been a great public speaker to begin with.
That’s reading way too much into it. That was an incredibly emotional week for Chipper with all sorts of pressure. He’s never been a great public speaker to begin with.
Yeah, I know… it’s just one of those things. It’s going to take me a bit before I’m able to forget about Chipper’s Wild Card Friday and just focus on how awesome he was over his Braves career.
I guess I’m just a “what have you done for me lately” kind of guy.
Again, it’s impossible to know who we are going to get for the 2014 team when players are constantly placed on the trade block.
It’s sort of like this year. Yes, we know the list of free agent outfielders. But there is a good chance that Wren fills the need in the outfield with someone not on the list.
It’s sort of like this year. Yes, we know the list of free agent outfielders. But there is a good chance that Wren fills the need in the outfield with someone not on the list.
Sure, but the conversation has to start somewhere, and the free agent list is pretty much all we have to go on for the next 12 months.
One thing it illustrates is just how much interest there will be in BMac should he actually hit the market. Even if he has another mediocre season in 2013, he’ll be far and away the most sought after catcher on the market.
I think Mac will sign a club friendly extension (if indeed, he’s offered one)….. I think he’d be a worthwhile candidate for an extension, albeit maybe not at market value.
That’d be nice, but I don’t see why Brian would do it. Heck, I don’t see why the FO would offer Mac an extension right now. They need to see how he’ll hold up next year. Brian will be playing for the big bucks. Will easily be the best C on the market that offseason. Maybe he really really wants to stay here and will sign a 3 yr contract at 10-11mil per, but when he can go to the AL and likely easily get 6 years, 15+mil… it’s gonna be tough.
Was just curious….as I have been back at it w/ the RTTS mode in the last few months….
Frankly the game has started to irk me though…..I was a CF drafted in Round 1 by Cincinnati, but then they couldn’t find a place for me w/ Stubbs there (surprised) so they dealt me to the Marlins for Heath Bell….yes, in year 2 I was already dealt as a major piece for cash relief….
Then I made the show right away for the Marlins but couldn’t get why they couldn’t figure out how to find a spot for both me and Bonifacio in the lineup AND Reyes kept getting hurt….so I got tired of just me and Stanton trying to carry the club and playing out of last place….
So I requested a trade….and I was placed on the block and the 3 teams looking at me: Yankees, Dodgers, and Rangers…..so it comes to the deadline and BAM…
I get dealt to the ROYALS for Hosmer…..yeah, I wasn’t happy about that! Yes, I get to play alongside Gordon and Escobar and Dyson…but for some odd reason when I was sent there, they had Moose back in AAA…..he’s finally up, BUT the team still isn’t that great….
I apparently am slowly becoming the Josh Willingham of my RTTS
I gave up after I put together a rookie season for the ages and then got traded to San Diego because I failed to achieve my monthly goals.
I think the goals system is messed up. I understand the developers want you to make your character a well-rounded player, but trading me, a 6 foot 6 power-hitting 3B to San Diego because I didn’t fulfill my stolen base quota or improve my bunting seems like bad design.
Andruw wants to play 4 more years. Heck, if I could play baseball and make minimum salary, I’d play till I was social security age if somebody would have me!
Me though, they just started playing at DH and moving me around to various positions because my secondary is UTIL….simply because I haven’t increased my fielding and reaction times to the proper standard….
But yeah, I havent created a pitcher but I was told its almost impossible to create and keep a pitcher as a closer or short reliever because it keeps asking you to increase that attribute….
For me, it asks me to draw so many walks and because I have the in game aptitude (and lack of time) of Jeff Francoeur, I never reach that goal, so usually I’m ok as I hit 3 of 4 most times….
But I do agree that the goal system does need to be revamped a bit….
For example, asking me to steal 3b down by 2 late in a game makes little to no sense
I really think the management system could use some overhaul as well though too….
They keep guys in lineups that shouldn’t be while better players are on the bench….
Like I said, the Marlins bring me in and then they have Bonifacio on the bench….and now I’m on the Royals and while they could move me in to the IF and bring Dyson in to play CF or move me to DH permanently, they keep Dyson on the bench and we keep a .220 hitter in at 2b
PT, yeah, the roster management AI is pretty lacking.
Just once I wish a console game would play like The Show and have the AI of OOTP under the hood. Sadly these games don’t make Madden money, so they’ll never get the kind of resources behind them needed to make them truly great.
I was thinking of trying to buy the All Star Baseball license back from whoever acquired it when my company went under and then put it out for iOS so people can play ASB on their iPads and iPhones. Someday.

Bethancourt is really young, and hasn’t played very much at the higher levels of the minors. If he was on the Braves next year, it would probably be as a backup to Ross, how is a better player at this point. That being the case, Bethancourt will probably develop faster if playing every day against lower level talent, rather than sitting the bench 5 out of 6 days in Atlanta. Better to spend a small amount for a guy who can catch and play another position for a month or two while waiting for Mac to return, and allow Bethancourt to continue to develop so that when he does come up it’ll be because he’s fully ready.

Again, it’s impossible to know who we are going to get for the 2014 team when players are constantly placed on the trade block.
It’s sort of like this year. Yes, we know the list of free agent outfielders. But there is a good chance that Wren fills the need in the outfield with someone not on the list.

That I do agree w/ to a degree….

Just once I wish a console game would play like The Show and have the AI of OOTP under the hood. Sadly these games don’t make Madden money, so they’ll never get the kind of resources behind them needed to make them truly great.
