bravedan – Not sure whether Wren will go for a FA like Pagan for CF and trade for someone else like Willingham for LF. Or if they trade for Span and Willingham. Or trade for Span and find a LFer through Free Agency. Or find a RH hitting LFer who rakes against LHP and platoons Prado and the new guy in LF with Prado playing 3B when LHP is on the mound and Francico at 3B and Prado in LF against RHP. Or maybe Frank goes out and comes up with a deal none of us saw coming.
Lots of potential scenarios, plenty of cash available and a good bit of minor league pitching talent (and maybe even Hanson) to trade. A couple things seem definite – that changes will be made, they have the wherewithall to make the changes and that no matter what track FW takes, there will be plenty that disagree with his choices.
The first episode of American Horror Story was chock full of eye opening scenes of true horror. This was far better and more interesting than last year and I hope they can keep it up.
Wow – only 15 posts since I signed off, and only the one five minutes afterward was overly – well, I suppose I won’t start off a foggy Sunday morning being uncharitable…
Morning, Lew, how ya doing? Is it cold up there yet? I would love to see us get Pagan for CF, he is a nice player who seems to be improving each year. We are going to need a catcher to share the job with Ross until BMac gets back…I don’t see Boscan as suitable for this role, he doesn’t hit enough.
Agreed 100%, just so many ways Wren can go. Nice to have Prado who gives Wren extra flexibility by giving him the option to look at 3rd baseman as well.
ken – I’m hanging in there pretty well. Yep – we’ve had temps down to th upper 20’s and you can see some snow on the slopes, but it actually went up to 70 the other day. Kind of typical for this time of year, but I had the snow tires put on the other day. We ve had snow earlier than this before.
Maybe they’ll give Gattis a look for temp duty til Mac comes back. Not sure if he’s ready yet, but there has to be a better alternative than Boscan, who I always thought was lifetime Spring Training catcher.
@kenhotlanta; I was able to check out the 1st episode(TWD), oh man, it was riviting, kinda kept me on the edge of my seat, hated about herchel gett’n bit, man that was tough, like you said, it’s everything that keeps you glued, thanks man. Hey ‘how ’bout wren look’n at this young slugger from texas – Mike Olt, pull up his minor stats, richbrave seems to feel could be a good pursuit for.
I wouldn’t mind Gattis backup up Ross. He’s better than Boscan. He’ll make his mark, and never get sent back down too I believe. He’s hit everywhere the Braves send him.
Better avg. in 3 minor-league seasons than Simba did. If we don’t get Paulino, I would prefer Gattis to get the opportunity. Keep Boscan away.
My concerns with Gattis are more about his endurance and ability to play a full MLB season (hasn’t played more than 88 games in a year in his pro career yet). But that shouldn’t matter if he just covers Mac’s absence.
74bravesjersey: That’s great, glad you got see The Walking Dead. I am worried about watching tonight’s show, but the online viewing sites have really improved in the past year or two…you used to have to create an account, log in, and worst of all, download some type of software or viewer from their website that you had no clue if it was full of malware and viruses. Now you just do a Google search for “Watch Walking Dead” or whatever show you want to see and some easy and workable sites pop up (I hope – LOL).
Yeah, this Olt sounds like a good possiblity, wonder what he would cost us?
It would be great if Gattis is ready to catch this year, but that’s a big question as to whether he can handle the job. Hasn’t he been concentrating on Left Field and First Base the past couple of years?
Jose yepez(31yrs.)Catcher, journeyman’s been around awhile like Boscan, but has much better avg. w/ a lil’ pop, his credentials(hitting wise) weigh a little more than Boscan.
@Ken – I’m w/ya, & Gattis would be my first option, like you say he’s been spending much more time in LF,1stB(?), like to see him learn 3B if possible, but hope he can be a poosibility. richbrave kinda threw this scenario, Constanza, Teheran for Michael Olt, I think would be decent move.
Ken – Hope to see tonights episode as well. Poor o’l Herschel, hope Rick cut his leg off quick enough before the poison went into his blood stream, man, the graphics, that was rough.
TOBF; I hear ya, I’d still would’ve rather had yepez before Boscan, I guess he’s(Boscan) a good o’l boy who’s good defensively & been toiling away for awhile, & everybody likes em’, braves seem to be big for that kinda thing, Yepez could be a viable backup, if you need backup.
For some of baseball’s free agents, the market conditions couldn’t be more promising. Major League Baseball teams are flush with money, their pockets lined well into the future by new, massive national and local TV contracts, and by cost-containment measures in the amateur draft and international markets.
“There’s so much money out there, it’s scary,” said a highly ranked executive this week.
Clubs are ready to spend like it’s the Christmas season. The problem with that, however, is that the 2012-2013 free agent class is thought to be among the weakest in history.
Zack Greinke is going to be the most prominent pitchers in the market and he’s going to get really big dollars. But so will players who are regarded as average, or even above-average.
Yankees are expected to make a qualifying offer to Rafael Soriano. Pretty nuts, but the first round is set to be really, really shortened with all of the potential losses of draft picks.
Hamilton, Bourn, Upton, Swisher, Pagan, Ortiz, Peavy, Lohse, Kuroda, Jackson, and Soriano expected to be made qualifying offers by their current teams last I checked.
I think the key for Gattis being a big league player will be if he can play a decent 1st base and corner outfield. I see him being a Eric Hinske or Ryan Doumit type player at best. Solid bench player who can be your 3rd catcher and provide some pop off the bench.
Well the Braves are not part of that TV/money crowd. You almost would think that Liberty would try and buyout there current contract so they can bet a better deal.
David O’Brien @ajcbraves
Makes some sense, yes. RT @FSUBrad: @ajcbraves CoCo has to be on our radar now. Makes ton of sense, rt? Affordable, won’t cost much in trade
What’s this low cost where it makes sense for us… Salcedo? Spruill? Hmm
The Braves, like every other team, will benefit from the new national contracts with espn, fox, tbs. Believe the estimate is something like 26 mil in new money for every team.
Billy Beane does love flipping vets for prospects. I’m not that big of a fan of CoCo tho cause of his Low OBP. He provides good but not great defense and alot of stolen bases tho. He’d be a nice addition if we only had to offer a couple lower prospects.
So, keep in mind that if the Braves were to reduce their payroll by, say, 10 mil or so, they’d actually be saving far more than that, and the fans would have a right to complain if they cheap out on us.
David O’Brien @ajcbraves
Makes some sense, yes. RT @FSUBrad: @ajcbraves CoCo has to be on our radar now. Makes ton of sense, rt? Affordable, won’t cost much in trade
That’d be something if we end up with Willingham and Crisp – two players who have always been available when we’ve had outfield needs and never seemed like the front office cared for them much.
My Redskins have the absolute worst defense in NFL history. It’s flat out unbelievable. Can’t be too mad tho. Only lost by 4 to a team that just completely crushed the 49ers.
My Skins would be contenders but its hard to compete when Fred Davis, Brian Orakpo, and Adam Carriker are out for the season and Pierre Garcon and Brandon Meriweather are banged up and not playing.
Darn, those are some major injuries. I really expected you guys to contend for and make the playoffs as a wild-card. Got a bright future though with RG3
Player, Team WAR
Ryan Braun, MIL 20.0

Michael Bourn, HOU/ATL 14.3
Jason Heyward, ATL 14.2

Chris Young, ARI 11.7
I got completely bashed for suggesting the Braves try for Wil Myers. 21 year old prospect who hasn’t played in the bigs yet. Has had some knee problems tho. Loads of potential and hit tools are awesome. I said we should offer Hanson and Delgado plus cash for him to start.
AMC is back on Dish!!!!!
“Good news Zombie Fans! AMC will be back on DISH by 4pm MST today (channel 131)! Catch the season premiere of The Walking Dead, immediately followed by an all-new episode at 9/8c. To thank you for being a valued DISH customer, all customers can enjoy AMC in free preview.”
The schedule doesn’t reflect this yet, but I’m sure it will be fixed. A bunch of folks on FB, including me, got into it last night with a Dish rep over the AMC situation, customer no-service, and their total disregard for their customers. I got a message from someone from Dish late last night telling me to call in Monday for a “special deal”.
And, yes, I take full credit for the return of the Walking Dead on Dish! I am awesome.
Who are some other realistic RH power hitters for LF we could go after? Josh Willingham seems to be the only one that comes to mind. His production plus his contract make total sense. Cody Ross could be one but I don’t view him as that type still.
74bravesjersey: Thanks. I hope I can catch up on Season 2 of Hell on Wheels, I missed it, of course, but don’t know if they will re-show it. At least I don’t have to depend on my unreliable laptop to watch The Walking Dead.

Its early but how do you see Wren filling the needs.
Trade route. Not free agency. If he’s sticking to the “premium players” thing. There isn’t any of that on the free agent market except for Josh Hamilton and we aren’t going after him, imo.
HAHAHAHA! Of course there ain’t nobody more off the wall than me, just glad ya’ll put up w/ a kook like me, but I’m soooo psyched up now, cause our laptop is so unreliable right now, I’m ready to turn the lights out, mabey some pizza & watch Rick(That aussie, talk’n like a regular georgia redneck)& the gang figure how they’s gonna survive in that prison. Watch’n w/ my daughter, my son, big fans. I’m Zombie psyched right now!
But I do have a feeling that were gonna end up with some kind of platoon in LF/3B with Prado/Francisco and a new guy. With Prado playing everyday but position depends on oppo pitcher. Just seems like finding a real fulltime LFer is so hard to do for this organization.
Hey Ken; The question on the AMC (TWD)blog was Herschel gonna survive? will find out, hey, whats you’re take on wrens direction to go? How many moves made, 2 or 3?

So, keep in mind that if the Braves were to reduce their payroll by, say, 10 mil or so, they’d actually be saving far more than that, and the fans would have a right to complain if they cheap out on us.

Most likely Liberty will pocket the extra 26 million. You think they would atleast put 20% of it in the teams payroll.

I try not to predict what Liberty might do. They cut payroll by around 13% in 2010, but raised it about 10% the following year.

Justin Upton will cost way too much to get in trade.
Nick Swisher is gonna get atleast Dan Uggla type money or more..
Cody Ross, Ryan Ludwick, and Scott Hairston seem too inconsistent to me and I’m just not a believer, but all would fit our budget.
Delmon Young, blah…
Andruw Jones and Reed Johnson are backups.

Trade route. Not free agency. If he’s sticking to the “premium players” thing. There isn’t any of that on the free agent market except for Josh Hamilton and we aren’t going after him, imo.

But I do have a feeling that were gonna end up with some kind of platoon in LF/3B with Prado/Francisco and a new guy. With Prado playing everyday but position depends on oppo pitcher. Just seems like finding a real fulltime LFer is so hard to do for this organization.

I hope there isn’t a platoon at all in LF. Find a real RH power hitting LFer who can bat cleanup between Heyward and Freeman.
For CF I would prioritize defense. Maybe a combo of a defensive 1st CFer along with someone like Reed Johnson.
I’d be really surprised if Wren add a RH power hitter for LF and a CF who can bat leadoff.
