My work here is done…
October 21st, 201212:51 am
Good night, Atlanta (and Las Vegas) – tip you bartenders and waitstaff!!!…
October 21st, 201212:52 am
This did not post – sorry…
My occupational hazard being my occupations just not around…
NO MORE FREDI
October 21st, 201212:57 am
Getting new players means nothing as long as Fredi continues Bobby Ball (and a bad version of it) in Atlanta. You can forget the Braves getting to another World Series while fat boy runs the show.
October 21st, 20121:00 am
Cards and Tigers in the show. Yawn!
October 21st, 20121:12 am
11:17pm: The Blue Jays will receive Mike Aviles as compensation, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com. Meanwhile, Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun (via Twitter) wouldn’t be surprised to see Adam Lind head to the Red Sox.
October 21st, 20121:14 am
my post has a time of at 1:12… that must be why it keeps going back.
October 21st, 20121:15 am
now it settled down. some really weird glitch. It always showed my post as being at 1:12 am.
October 21st, 20124:48 am
so that would make your grandfather who,Nowhere?
October 21st, 20128:53 am
@richbrave; MIKE OLT; That would be a good deal; I’d go w/that.
October 21st, 20129:03 am
@richbrave; The kid had a strong year; 28 bombs; GET ‘EM! Frank, Get ‘Em!
October 21st, 20129:07 am
Would you trade Uggla’s remaining three year contract to the Rangers for Michael Young’s bloated final contract year which is 16 million for 2013 I believe? Then we’re free after next year of Uggla, but suffer a little this year with young’s contract. The Rangers might be interested to use Uggla at DH to try and regain some power they are going to lose assuming Hamilton isn’t resigned. Young could play third next year, but at this point in his career most say second is his best position, Either way, Prado could play the other. We could set ourselves up for 2014 flexibility.
October 21st, 20129:19 am
Eric Chavez as a stop gap 3rd baseman?
October 21st, 20129:42 am
They aren’t going to trade Uggla. Not for contract relief. Not for someone else’s absurd deal. It just isn’t going to happen.
October 21st, 20129:50 am
What are some ideas floating thru ur mind for next year, Lew? Or anyone else? I’m bored, just thinking up scenarios to talk about.
October 21st, 201210:04 am
@bravedan; Eric Chavez wouldn’t be bad.
October 21st, 201210:08 am
bravedan – Not sure whether Wren will go for a FA like Pagan for CF and trade for someone else like Willingham for LF. Or if they trade for Span and Willingham. Or trade for Span and find a LFer through Free Agency. Or find a RH hitting LFer who rakes against LHP and platoons Prado and the new guy in LF with Prado playing 3B when LHP is on the mound and Francico at 3B and Prado in LF against RHP. Or maybe Frank goes out and comes up with a deal none of us saw coming.
Lots of potential scenarios, plenty of cash available and a good bit of minor league pitching talent (and maybe even Hanson) to trade. A couple things seem definite – that changes will be made, they have the wherewithall to make the changes and that no matter what track FW takes, there will be plenty that disagree with his choices.
October 21st, 201210:31 am
The first episode of American Horror Story was chock full of eye opening scenes of true horror. This was far better and more interesting than last year and I hope they can keep it up.
October 21st, 201210:33 am
Wow – only 15 posts since I signed off, and only the one five minutes afterward was overly – well, I suppose I won’t start off a foggy Sunday morning being uncharitable…
October 21st, 201210:36 am
Morning, Lew, how ya doing? Is it cold up there yet? I would love to see us get Pagan for CF, he is a nice player who seems to be improving each year. We are going to need a catcher to share the job with Ross until BMac gets back…I don’t see Boscan as suitable for this role, he doesn’t hit enough.
October 21st, 201210:40 am
Correction – it had been raining, a much rarer occurrence here than fog rolling in off the Pacific…
October 21st, 201210:58 am
Hello everyone. Check out this high school field goal kicker. 67 yards, impressive. I hope Bama is trying to recruit him.
October 21st, 201211:03 am
Agreed 100%, just so many ways Wren can go. Nice to have Prado who gives Wren extra flexibility by giving him the option to look at 3rd baseman as well.
October 21st, 201211:20 am
ken – I’m hanging in there pretty well. Yep – we’ve had temps down to th upper 20’s and you can see some snow on the slopes, but it actually went up to 70 the other day. Kind of typical for this time of year, but I had the snow tires put on the other day. We ve had snow earlier than this before.
Maybe they’ll give Gattis a look for temp duty til Mac comes back. Not sure if he’s ready yet, but there has to be a better alternative than Boscan, who I always thought was lifetime Spring Training catcher.
October 21st, 201211:26 am
@kenhotlanta; I was able to check out the 1st episode(TWD), oh man, it was riviting, kinda kept me on the edge of my seat, hated about herchel gett’n bit, man that was tough, like you said, it’s everything that keeps you glued, thanks man. Hey ‘how ’bout wren look’n at this young slugger from texas – Mike Olt, pull up his minor stats, richbrave seems to feel could be a good pursuit for.
October 21st, 201211:29 am
I agree w/ richbrave.28 Bombs this past year, hit .280 I believe.
October 21st, 201211:32 am
I wouldn’t mind Gattis backup up Ross. He’s better than Boscan. He’ll make his mark, and never get sent back down too I believe. He’s hit everywhere the Braves send him.
Better avg. in 3 minor-league seasons than Simba did. If we don’t get Paulino, I would prefer Gattis to get the opportunity. Keep Boscan away.
October 21st, 201211:35 am
My concerns with Gattis are more about his endurance and ability to play a full MLB season (hasn’t played more than 88 games in a year in his pro career yet). But that shouldn’t matter if he just covers Mac’s absence.
Hah, for a guy who is now so fluid defensively, take a look at Simmons numbers last year… made 28 errors in 129 games. .958 fielding %
October 21st, 201211:41 am
Also Jose Yepez(like the last name), hitt’n .333 in venezuela, could be an option, o’l yepez, yep.
October 21st, 201211:45 am
74bravesjersey: That’s great, glad you got see The Walking Dead. I am worried about watching tonight’s show, but the online viewing sites have really improved in the past year or two…you used to have to create an account, log in, and worst of all, download some type of software or viewer from their website that you had no clue if it was full of malware and viruses. Now you just do a Google search for “Watch Walking Dead” or whatever show you want to see and some easy and workable sites pop up (I hope – LOL).
Yeah, this Olt sounds like a good possiblity, wonder what he would cost us?
It would be great if Gattis is ready to catch this year, but that’s a big question as to whether he can handle the job. Hasn’t he been concentrating on Left Field and First Base the past couple of years?
October 21st, 201211:46 am
Yepez could be as well, but he’s not Gattis!
Solid numbers, .264/.354/.370/.724 last season, hit over .300 with Seattles AAA affiliate in 2011.
Reached AAA in 2010, has a .282/.379/.394/.773 line at that level. He’ll be 32 next June
October 21st, 201211:47 am
Jose yepez(31yrs.)Catcher, journeyman’s been around awhile like Boscan, but has much better avg. w/ a lil’ pop, his credentials(hitting wise) weigh a little more than Boscan.
October 21st, 201212:00 pm
@Ken – I’m w/ya, & Gattis would be my first option, like you say he’s been spending much more time in LF,1stB(?), like to see him learn 3B if possible, but hope he can be a poosibility. richbrave kinda threw this scenario, Constanza, Teheran for Michael Olt, I think would be decent move.
October 21st, 201212:03 pm
Ken – Hope to see tonights episode as well. Poor o’l Herschel, hope Rick cut his leg off quick enough before the poison went into his blood stream, man, the graphics, that was rough.
October 21st, 201212:08 pm
TOBF; I hear ya, I’d still would’ve rather had yepez before Boscan, I guess he’s(Boscan) a good o’l boy who’s good defensively & been toiling away for awhile, & everybody likes em’, braves seem to be big for that kinda thing, Yepez could be a viable backup, if you need backup.
October 21st, 201212:12 pm
Greinke turns 29 today y’all…. hope he celebrates his birthday by thinking of all the fun he’ll have in Atlanta next season
October 21st, 201212:14 pm
For some of baseball’s free agents, the market conditions couldn’t be more promising. Major League Baseball teams are flush with money, their pockets lined well into the future by new, massive national and local TV contracts, and by cost-containment measures in the amateur draft and international markets.
“There’s so much money out there, it’s scary,” said a highly ranked executive this week.
Clubs are ready to spend like it’s the Christmas season. The problem with that, however, is that the 2012-2013 free agent class is thought to be among the weakest in history.
Zack Greinke is going to be the most prominent pitchers in the market and he’s going to get really big dollars. But so will players who are regarded as average, or even above-average.
October 21st, 201212:16 pm
Yankees are expected to make a qualifying offer to Rafael Soriano. Pretty nuts, but the first round is set to be really, really shortened with all of the potential losses of draft picks.
Hamilton, Bourn, Upton, Swisher, Pagan, Ortiz, Peavy, Lohse, Kuroda, Jackson, and Soriano expected to be made qualifying offers by their current teams last I checked.
October 21st, 201212:24 pm
I think the key for Gattis being a big league player will be if he can play a decent 1st base and corner outfield. I see him being a Eric Hinske or Ryan Doumit type player at best. Solid bench player who can be your 3rd catcher and provide some pop off the bench.
October 21st, 201212:25 pm
I thought Rafeal Soriano has a current contract with a opt out clause?
October 21st, 201212:27 pm
Well the Braves are not part of that TV/money crowd. You almost would think that Liberty would try and buyout there current contract so they can bet a better deal.
David O’Brien @ajcbraves
Makes some sense, yes. RT @FSUBrad: @ajcbraves CoCo has to be on our radar now. Makes ton of sense, rt? Affordable, won’t cost much in trade
What’s this low cost where it makes sense for us… Salcedo? Spruill? Hmm
Hugo Z Hackenbush
October 21st, 201212:39 pm
The Braves, like every other team, will benefit from the new national contracts with espn, fox, tbs. Believe the estimate is something like 26 mil in new money for every team.
October 21st, 201212:40 pm
Or you can do the math…
October 21st, 201212:42 pm
Billy Beane does love flipping vets for prospects. I’m not that big of a fan of CoCo tho cause of his Low OBP. He provides good but not great defense and alot of stolen bases tho. He’d be a nice addition if we only had to offer a couple lower prospects.
October 21st, 201212:44 pm
So, keep in mind that if the Braves were to reduce their payroll by, say, 10 mil or so, they’d actually be saving far more than that, and the fans would have a right to complain if they cheap out on us.
October 21st, 201212:55 pm
Most likely Liberty will pocket the extra 26 million. You think they would atleast put 20% of it in the teams payroll.
October 21st, 20121:02 pm
I try not to predict what Liberty might do. They cut payroll by around 13% in 2010, but raised it about 10% the following year.
October 21st, 20121:36 pm
Guess everyone’s away from the blog not watching the Falcons…
October 21st, 20121:52 pm
“Zack Greinke is going to be the most prominent pitchers in the market and he’s going to get really big dollars.”
Translation: Greinke won’t be a Brave. I’m O.K. with that.
October 21st, 20122:19 pm
My top 5 World Series of all time (yes, Braves-Twins is high on list. Real high.)
October 21st, 20122:28 pm
I rate the 1960 Yanks-Pirates 7 game series in my top 5.
October 21st, 20122:35 pm
Crisp and Willingham will be affordable to us……
October 21st, 20122:41 pm
shucks, put Constanza in center and Francisco at third and we are good to go……
October 21st, 20123:21 pm
must be pro pointyball time. Bah!!
October 21st, 20123:23 pm
Are the Braves the only team not part of the tv contract crowd?
October 21st, 20123:59 pm
October 21st, 20124:06 pm
Congratulations to Ward and Kat!
October 21st, 20124:32 pm
That’d be something if we end up with Willingham and Crisp – two players who have always been available when we’ve had outfield needs and never seemed like the front office cared for them much.
October 21st, 20124:39 pm
Congratulations to my Falcons. They’re still the only undefeated team in the NFL.
October 21st, 20124:44 pm
My Redskins have the absolute worst defense in NFL history. It’s flat out unbelievable. Can’t be too mad tho. Only lost by 4 to a team that just completely crushed the 49ers.
My Skins would be contenders but its hard to compete when Fred Davis, Brian Orakpo, and Adam Carriker are out for the season and Pierre Garcon and Brandon Meriweather are banged up and not playing.
October 21st, 20124:49 pm
Darn, those are some major injuries. I really expected you guys to contend for and make the playoffs as a wild-card. Got a bright future though with RG3
October 21st, 20125:00 pm
I’m for PAGAN and OLT.
Send away TEHERAN, CONSTANZA, and MEJIA for OLT; Sign PAGAN as a free agent.
Get GATTIS up here out of ST to take over for HINSKI.
October 21st, 20125:03 pm
You knew the d-secondary would give up big plays. Just not THE big play. Over=all improved. I guess GOMES will be out with a concussiuon.
Losing DAVIS is going to hurt. Maybe they can put him on IR and resign COOLEY.
That tripping call on POLUMBUS was SO bogus. The call on DAVIS was legit.
October 21st, 20125:05 pm
I thought Rafeal Soriano has a current contract with a opt out clause?
He can and will. But the Yankees can still make a qualifying offer to get a draft pick.
October 21st, 20125:06 pm
GREINKE not a BRAVE…..uh, o.k.
October 21st, 20125:11 pm
IF – OLT, FRANCISCO, SIMMONS, JANISH, UGGLA, FREEMAN, GATTIS, McCANN, ROSS
OF – JOHNSON, PRADO, PAGAN, HEYWARD
October 21st, 20125:13 pm
Doubt Texas will trade Olt.
October 21st, 20125:19 pm
A’s always after depth.
OF’s Yoenis Cespedes, Coco Crisp, Josh Reddick, Chris Young, Seth Smith, Collin Cowgill
1B Chris Carter, Brandon Moss
2B Jemile Weeks and Scott Sizemore
Probably go with Josh Donaldson at 3rd, resign Stephen Drew for SS and Norris/Kottares platoon at C.
October 21st, 20125:21 pm
2010-2012 OF WAR leaders in NL:
Player, Team WAR
Ryan Braun, MIL 20.0
Andrew McCutchen, PIT 15.8
Michael Bourn, HOU/ATL 14.3
Jason Heyward, ATL 14.2
Matt Holliday, STL 13.2
Giancarlo Stanton, MIA 12.0
Chris Young, ARI 11.7
I got completely bashed for suggesting the Braves try for Wil Myers. 21 year old prospect who hasn’t played in the bigs yet. Has had some knee problems tho. Loads of potential and hit tools are awesome. I said we should offer Hanson and Delgado plus cash for him to start.
October 21st, 20125:26 pm
VaBraves – Thing is that they say they don’t want to trade Myers.
October 21st, 20125:28 pm
Is there substance to the Olt/Myers talk? Or is it just blog speculation
October 21st, 20125:29 pm
AMC is back on Dish!!!!!
“Good news Zombie Fans! AMC will be back on DISH by 4pm MST today (channel 131)! Catch the season premiere of The Walking Dead, immediately followed by an all-new episode at 9/8c. To thank you for being a valued DISH customer, all customers can enjoy AMC in free preview.”
The schedule doesn’t reflect this yet, but I’m sure it will be fixed. A bunch of folks on FB, including me, got into it last night with a Dish rep over the AMC situation, customer no-service, and their total disregard for their customers. I got a message from someone from Dish late last night telling me to call in Monday for a “special deal”.
And, yes, I take full credit for the return of the Walking Dead on Dish! I am awesome.
October 21st, 20125:30 pm
I said we should offer Hanson and Delgado plus cash for him to start.
I really don’t think KC will trade Myers. They are planning on having him in RF for many years.
October 21st, 20125:32 pm
I don’t see the Royals trading Myers and I think Olt will be used for an impact hitter/pitcher. Not a prospect for prospect swap.
October 21st, 20125:41 pm
Most talked about players as possible additions here on the blog for CF/LF
Forgot to add Angel Pagan
October 21st, 20125:43 pm
Who are some other realistic RH power hitters for LF we could go after? Josh Willingham seems to be the only one that comes to mind. His production plus his contract make total sense. Cody Ross could be one but I don’t view him as that type still.
October 21st, 20125:48 pm
@kenhotlanta, you the Bomb, Big fella’, you o’l zombie, now go find some of these bloggsters & take a bite out of ‘em! AAAARRRGGGGGHHHHH!
October 21st, 20125:51 pm
74bravesjersey: Thanks. I hope I can catch up on Season 2 of Hell on Wheels, I missed it, of course, but don’t know if they will re-show it. At least I don’t have to depend on my unreliable laptop to watch The Walking Dead.
October 21st, 20125:52 pm
Justin Upton will cost way too much to get in trade.
Nick Swisher is gonna get atleast Dan Uggla type money or more..
Cody Ross, Ryan Ludwick, and Scott Hairston seem too inconsistent to me and I’m just not a believer, but all would fit our budget.
Delmon Young, blah…
Andruw Jones and Reed Johnson are backups.
October 21st, 20125:53 pm
74bravesjersey: I wish we could sic Zombies on some of these off the wall posters around here.

That’s about 70 free agents of note. Deep, but unspectacular class.
October 21st, 20126:05 pm
Its early but how do you see Wren filling the needs.
Coach (2012 Fredi's Beisbol Fandango)
October 21st, 20126:07 pm
Why is Ron Washington still managing the Texas Rangers?
October 21st, 20126:09 pm
Trade route. Not free agency. If he’s sticking to the “premium players” thing. There isn’t any of that on the free agent market except for Josh Hamilton and we aren’t going after him, imo.
October 21st, 20126:10 pm
having Young high on that list is one reason I have no respect for WAR
October 21st, 20126:11 pm
HAHAHAHA! Of course there ain’t nobody more off the wall than me, just glad ya’ll put up w/ a kook like me, but I’m soooo psyched up now, cause our laptop is so unreliable right now, I’m ready to turn the lights out, mabey some pizza & watch Rick(That aussie, talk’n like a regular georgia redneck)& the gang figure how they’s gonna survive in that prison. Watch’n w/ my daughter, my son, big fans. I’m Zombie psyched right now!
Good point, I forgot all about the premium player comment Wren made. Should be very interesting then. Cant wait for the Hot Stove to heat up.
October 21st, 20126:14 pm
Coming into the season he won consecutive AL Championships.
October 21st, 20126:15 pm
& @efrim; I agree,Frankie w/ probably go the free trade route.
October 21st, 20126:16 pm
But I do have a feeling that were gonna end up with some kind of platoon in LF/3B with Prado/Francisco and a new guy. With Prado playing everyday but position depends on oppo pitcher. Just seems like finding a real fulltime LFer is so hard to do for this organization.
October 21st, 20126:21 pm
But I do have a feeling that were gonna end up with some kind of platoon in LF/3B with Prado/Francisco and a new guy.
I hope there is a different LH hitter in that platoon than Francisco.
October 21st, 20126:23 pm
Ron Washington reminds me of Bobby Cox. Great regular season manager….horrible in the post season.
October 21st, 20126:24 pm
Hey Ken; The question on the AMC (TWD)blog was Herschel gonna survive? will find out, hey, whats you’re take on wrens direction to go? How many moves made, 2 or 3?
October 21st, 20126:27 pm
I hope there isn’t a platoon at all in LF. Find a real RH power hitting LFer who can bat cleanup between Heyward and Freeman.
For CF I would prioritize defense. Maybe a combo of a defensive 1st CFer along with someone like Reed Johnson.
I’d be really surprised if Wren add a RH power hitter for LF and a CF who can bat leadoff.
We talk baseball, other sports, music, movies, BBQ and whatever (except politics or religion)
