“Wren can earn his next extension if he stops the JS-ish win now folly – tossing away young talent for geezers who may add 1-2 games to the win pile.”
How refreshing. You build a competitive team over time with an occasional FA signing and timely/smart trades here and there, combined with a farm system that yields home grown talent. All without the expectation that you have a God-given right to be in the last game of the MLB season every year. Fans of clubs with winning traditions don’t expect to make the playoffs each and every year. They want to be consistantly competitive and make a run every few years. If it happens more frequently that’s fine, too. Good article about the Cards win of game 5 and a first-hand account from the players perspectives as it was playing out after going down early by 6 runs…in stltoday.com. It’s exactly the kind of roster you’d want to get in 1 dugout. And it doesn’t happen by picking up a bunch of FAs with decent stats.
Woody I honestly think they can make it work with the two wild cards because they want to draw more teams into the races and create more excitement. That’s still less teams than nba, nfl, nhl. I think they should either gives the 2 best teams in each league a weekend bye and have the wc face off against the other two division winners with all 3 games played at the division winners place or have the wc teams face off for a weekend series with the top wc team getting to host the series and let all the division winners take the weekend off. Just no one gamers. Not what the game is about imo.
I think what Ross was looking for out of Boston was a better guarantee of starter’s AB’s. With Atlanta’s situation, he was going to be the 4th outfielder and the sub when Chipper sat.
Problem with letting the two best teams sit is that oft times teams that sit too long lose the edge. I don’t think I’d want my team sitting if they had finished with the best record in the NL. Too much of a chance they would lose the edge.
I have every hope that during the winter meetings the OWNERS and GMS DEMAND NO GOOD BUD change that awfull one game playin game. BUD must have gotten the idea from the NCAA basketball tourament and is sure screwed us this year. If a team that is 6 games better than the other team over 162 games has to prove it all over again it MUST be a 2 out of 3 series.

Jake that is what I would really like, the more teams in the more it cheapens the sport. Some how it does not seam right that NATS 98 WINS and BRAVES 94 WINS are out of it and two teams with 88 wins are still playing.
A lot of teams would not want a buy on the first series – too easy for a team to lose momentum and get cold if they’re playing hot. Not as if they’re missing one game by sitting out a series – they’d be sitting out a week or a bit more. That’s fine for a football team – not so much for a baseball team.
Lew I really don’t think 2 or 3 days off will hurt that badly especially when the other teams rotation is a little out of whack. Its no different than one team going the distance in a series and one team not. There is no need for a day off between series.

Lew, I would have the WCs playing division winners only be 2 out of three with no days off, all games at division winners home.
Have a wild card weekend, best 2 out of 3. Either start division series on Sun or Mon. No breaks unless the weather plays a part. 2 or 3 days off with the other team forced to use their best pitcher doesn’t sound like a big deal to me.
This, also, I think is unrealistic, especially if you have teams from opposite coasts playing each other. Can’t play one night in Atlanta and the next in San Francisco, especially with the funky start times of play off games.

Anybody can win one game anywhere. I also wasn’t aware you had to get approval from everybody to do something because I doubt the one game play-in is a popular thing. Win your division and get rewarded with rest and homefield, these things are designed to put the teams with lesser wins at the disadvantage.
You don’t have to get approval from everyone, but there does need to be approval (believe it is simple majority) from the owners to change the format. And again, it’s more about revenue than about not being able to win on the road.

Darn shame about Jeter last night. I pull against the Yankees, but I have a lot of respect and admiration for Derek Jeter.
Well said. I was quite surprised by the number of my friends who were happy that he’s hurt. That’s sickening.
I want the Tigers to win, but I wouldn’t necessarily mind seeing the Yankees come back from this and get to the WS. At least then, no one will blame Jeter’s injury as being the reason they lost the series.
Some how it does not seam right that NATS 98 WINS and BRAVES 94 WINS are out of it and two teams with 88 wins are still playing
But it’s not like each team didn’t have a chance. The Braves blew theirs with 3 errors and the Nats had a 5 game series
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This one game stuff, has to stop right now………….
Somebody mentioned 4 divisions with 4 teams and 2 seven game series………….that sound better to me than the crap we have right now……..
Sometimes………. the number of wins in a season does not tells you which team is the better one.
You think the yankees are the best team in the AL?
I think Tigers, Texas and O´s were better………..
Same goes for the NL……… Cards are the better team…….. we have a much better pitching staff and it gave us a better record…………but on the field…………they execute much better than us and maybe better than the nats……….
They just know what to do, how to win when crunch time arrives, we dont, period……..so we are not the better team, we are the team with the better stats, thats all.
but this 1 game (sudden death) crap and even 5 game series, I think is not something that is good for the sport and authorities should know better.
They are just thinking……….money, business………… Reds and Braves were more complete teams than cards and SF and yet they are out………and I firmly believe this is because of the short series format.
Like Nowhere Man who is probably the same person, ACE baited people all the time like a teenager, not just DOB. Glad he is gone, wish we could get rid of Nowhere Man too.
Nothing more worthless that some one who has nothing to offer about baseball and does nothing but bait posters who actually do.
a previous blogger talked about not being able to get SOA on the Dish Network and I’ve heard about a few more talk about series they can’s get pn Dish. Just out out curiosity, why does anyone have the Dish Network?
I hate the Yankees and normally Derek Jeter but his broken ankle officially marks October 2012 as the worst, most demoralizing post-season in baseball history.
I’d stay away from Ross, Swisher and Upton. I just don’t think Ross provides enough pop. Swisher and Upton will cost a draft pick as well as a four-five year deal and at least 12 million per year. Too much, even if we have something like 22-25 million. Still have to make smart moves. I’d rather go the trade route.
Doc: we have a much better pitching staff and it gave us a better record.
Doc, have you even looked at the Cards staff? Lynn,Wainright, Garcia,Lohse,Carpenter,Mott, Boggs….I’m not sure where this belief that the Braves had a top-notch staff comes from.
I’d stay away from Ross, Swisher and Upton. I just don’t think Ross provides enough pop
Maybe not Cody Ross, but we better get David Ross signed. He’ll end up starting 80 games next year and play in 120. IMO the Braves should talke $6 M and sign David Ross, for $3, a primary back up for $2 and a third catcher for $1. $6 M and you’re set at catcher for $6 less than with the defenseless one.
It’ll be more than that. All pick values will be more as revenues grew. Also, provided they receive a pick for Michael Bourn departing, they will have more to spend because of that extra pick – up to $1.5 million more.
keyLargo: I have had Dish for about 2 years and they have never gone offline, plus I like their DVR. Except for the issue with AMC and briefly with Fox Sports South, they have given me very good service.
I would prefer Comcast because they have a lot more free stuff On Demand (especially current TV shows that I might miss), but I can’t get Comcast right now.
I guess Directv is doing so much negative advertising about lack of HD and lack of channels that Dish has taken a beating. Plus I don’t think you can get MLB.TV on DISH>

So I am a huge braves fan and read about the everywhere I can. I read recently that they are going to have between 30-35 million to spend so here are my thoughts trade hanson to the twins for willingham to play left and go for the big fish hamilton to play center prado will play third and short the time being he will lead off but eventually simmons will move to the leadoff spot
Prado 3b
Simmons ss
Freeman 1b
Hamilton cf
Willingham lf
Mccann c
uggla 2b
Heyward rf
you need to read more Joe, DOB explained above that they will have 22 mil after raises and such. Since Hamilton will get at least 20 mil, there is no way that they could afford him and Willingham. Plus there is no way they can afford to tie up 20% or more of their payroll in just one player.
While a great dream, I’m afraid that your idea will not come to fruition.
We’d have been better served to trade Delgado and Minor to get Pence, a guy with 2.5 years of control, and in his prime. We didn’t do that. I wouldn’t trade him for a 34 year old.
Untouchable for a prime player to completely touchable for an aging one? Hmm
Looks like our old friend Sam Holbrook is the first base umpire for the Yanks-Tigers game. How did he garner that since he is blind in one eye? Here’s hoping there is a bloop popup between the first baseman and the right fielder that could/could not be an “infield fly rule” and it kills the Yankees. World War III could start! (Although the Yanks are doing a good job of killing themselves right now) So Sad, So Sad!
We’d have been better served to trade Delgado and Minor to get Pence, a guy with 2.5 years of control, and in his prime. We didn’t do that. I wouldn’t trade him for a 34 year old.
Thank you Frank Wren for not making such an awful trade. Pence is a nice player, but that would of not been smart as we clearly needed a CF at the time.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Same goes for…………..texas and Os.

Doc, have you even looked at the Cards staff? Lynn,Wainright, Garcia,Lohse,Carpenter,Mott, Boggs….I’m not sure where this belief that the Braves had a top-notch staff comes from.

If I’m not mistaken, the Yankees were the only team to win a series, or wild card game, at home.
Even if you’re not a fan of either team playing, no one wants to watch the road team celebrate on somebody else’s field.
The more I think about it, the more I’m grateful for fans throwing *&#% at the umps.
It was refreshing for once to see the team that beat us in the playoffs run off the field after the last out in fear.
I actually enjoyed watching that.

Freeman 1b

you need to read more Joe, DOB explained above that they will have 22 mil after raises and such. Since Hamilton will get at least 20 mil, there is no way that they could afford him and Willingham. Plus there is no way they can afford to tie up 20% or more of their payroll in just one player.
While a great dream, I’m afraid that your idea will not come to fruition.

The Braves rotation in 2013?
We’d have been better served to trade Delgado and Minor to get Pence, a guy with 2.5 years of control, and in his prime. We didn’t do that. I wouldn’t trade him for a 34 year old.

Thank you Frank Wren for not making such an awful trade. Pence is a nice player, but that would of not been smart as we clearly needed a CF at the time.
