Teams need to learn how to pitch that 3rd strike on the Cards after recording 2 outs. Cards came back twice this year, and twice last year in that situation, IIRC. (in elimination games)

The Cards really play the game right….i.e., they take care of the intangibles as well as the obvious hard nosed essentials of an MLB contest………..mailing it in is not an option for St. Louis..

I really feel for the Nationals…absolutely heart-breaking for them. As for thoughts on the Cardinals, the best thing I can do is enjoy memories of the 1996 NLCS. Otherwise, they are the antithesis of the Atlanta Braves…they’ve been taking full advantage of their opportunities for a long time now.

F*in’ Cardinals have no business being in the LCS.

It’s an embarrassment.

The second wild card was intended to place more emphasis on teams winning their divisions.

Clearly all it’s done is given the fifth place Cardinals, an unaccomplished team over the past 162 games of 2012 with absolutely nothing to lose, no pressure, no real reason for playing this far other than to spoil it for the Braves and Nationals, teams who’s regular season success gave cause for great expectations.

The baseball playoffs still do not favor the winningest teams.

The Nats and Reds deserved to fight it out for the National League pennant.

Now it’s the f*ing Giants and Cardinals.

That’s terrible.

Absolutely terrible.

Could not possibly hate either team more.

At least the Giants win their division.

Bob Nightengale: Baseball executives say the Washington Nationals’ playoff run is not a feel-good story.
Sitting Stephen Strasburg could come back to haunt the Washington Nationals.(Photo: Alex Brandon AP)
Story Highlights
GM: ‘They don’t deserve to win it. Not after what they did’
Another GM: ‘I hope it takes another 79 years’
Win or lose today, the Strasburg talk will never completely go away
11:18AM EDT October 11. 2012 – It was painful to watch, almost heartbreaking.

The nation’s capital has gone 79 years between playoff appearances, but saw the Nationals get humiliated Wednesday in their first-ever home postseason date. It almost makes you feel like sending flowers and sympathy cards.

So why are we hearing laughter and celebration all across baseball?

The Nationals might have been the most compelling story this summer, but suddenly they’ve become the most hated team in the game.

After being embarrassed 8-0 by the St. Louis Cardinals and falling behind 2-1 in their National League Division Series, there was no compassion or a scintilla of empathy for them.

NLDS: Cardinals take 2-1 series lead

Instead, we kept hearing the same refrain:

They got what they deserve.

“If we don’t win the World Series, I don’t care who does,” one general manager told USA TODAY Sports, “as long as it’s not those guys.

“They don’t deserve to win it. Not after what they did.”

Said a National League GM: “I hope they go down in flames. I hope it takes another 79 years before they get back to the playoffs. That’s how strongly I feel about it.”

The Nationals, baseball executives say, brought this on themselves. They were the defiant ones. They were the ones telling the world they were smarter than everyone else, shutting down ace Stephen Strasburg after 159 1/3 innings, believing they were protecting their prized asset for a lot of playoff games in their future.

“We’ll be back,” Nationals GM Mike Rizzo said after they clinched the National League East title, “and doing this a couple more times.”

That was the quote heard ’round the baseball world, with general managers and executives making sure everyone saw it. Who do they think they are, the Yankees? Are the Philadelphia Phillies going to defect from the NL East? Are the Atlanta Braves retiring with Chipper Jones?

What if the Nationals don’t get back during Strasburg’s stay in Washington? What if this is their best chance to ever get to the Series? How do you live with that?

And how would you like to be Ross Detwiler today? He’s the poor soul taking Strasburg’s spot in the playoff rotation, which in three games has yielded a 9.00 ERA with 25 baserunners. Now, he’s the one responsible for saving the season.

Win or lose today, the Strasburg talk will never completely go away.

Nationals players, particularly veterans, have grumbled and might sound off more once they depart.

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo turned a lot of heads when he said the club will be back to win a couple more NL East titles. Strasburg decision will begin. – Mike Rizzo got too Cocky, It your Crow Mike ! :???:

Crazy, ain’t it. Then again, we knew the 2-3 format was a bad thing, which is why it’ll be changed back to 2-2-1 next season. It was only 2-3 this year because they didn’t add the extra wild-card team to playoffs until after they’d made the schedules out already, and they didn’t want postseason to go any deepter into November. But they should have. An extra couple of days would’ve been worth it in order to make sure that teams with home-field advantage didn’t start the division series with two road games.

Then again, Cincinnati won its first two games at San Fran … then lost three in a row at home. Yikes.

Scott Boras likes his name in print. So, from August 17th…

You only have to pay him, because of the reserve system, $40 million dollars. So you have an $80 million dollar decision of profit — in an asset that you have under your control. You better look at it that way. You know what else you better look at? With your insurance coverage, if you go against medical recommendations, are you liable for negligence as an organization?”

Q: So, you’re saying there is some legal consequence involved if something were to happen to him this season or down the road because you kept pitching him?

A: The fact of the matter is, if you are forcing your player to pitch and disregarding medical doctors, are you going to be able to live with that legally and ethically?

Nats fans will be relieved to know Stephen is healthy, when he becomes a free agent. Or, that the Nats didn’t get into a legal dispute with Scott. Of course, there’s no guarantee that Stephen could have come in from the bullpen and shut the Cards down. In his only appearance against the Cards, he did give up 2 hits in 6 innings, along with 1 Walk and 9 strikeouts.

Here’s the rest, if you’re interested…

Call em clutch or gritty or determined or whatever word you want to use, they(Cards) just find a way to win. Maybe it’s the epitome of the word team. Something Braves lacked when it counts the most. Not knocking the team, we just couldn’t hit with runners on base. Now the NAts have a monkey on their back , big lead with the Cy Young guy on the mound and couldn’t close the deal. Gotta hurt. DIdn’t think Zimmerman should have smiled so big after his 1st inning HR , they acted like they had won the game. It was just the 1st inning and they were playing the best comeback team in baseball.

I think their secret is they save all their energy and strength for the games that really count….who cares who wins the season titles? All that matters is the month of playoffs and once more an also ran team roars into the scene.

“…the Braves are reluctant to divulge their spending limits, or specifics on how they calculate some contracts for payroll purposes.”

This says it all. They tell us what they want us to believe and our weak sports media doesn’t demand answers. This garbage wouldn’t fly in New York, Boston, Philly, or Chicago.

Cardinals have depth in the pen, solid starting pitching and a great offense. I see them winning it all….again.

And if they do, they are the first team to have that look of the late 90’s Yankees. Every ball rolls there way. Every opportunity is cashed in on. Amazing to watch.

“So for 12th time in last 14 years, the team with best regular-season record won’t win the World Series”

There’s a HUGE difference between winning a lot of games and being a champion

I have a lot of respect for the Cardinals after what they have done for the last two years, but they really should change their name.
The should be called the St. Louis Sandbaggers—–seems they play just good enough all summer to stay close, and then someone gives them a wake-up call, and they sneak in the playoffs.
This time, the only reason they are in is because there is a second Wild Card.
Ladies and gentlemen, inroducing the St. Louis Sandbaggers

The Nats organization got what it deserved. Knowing that they were entering a do-or-die scenario, they voluntarily held back from putting their best possible roster into play. At this level, that CANNOT win. It may be possible to win without ever actually having to go all-in, but it is impossible to do so if you decide ahead of time that you are simply unwilling to go all-in no matter what. In the process, they royally screwed their fan base and the guys in the clubhouse who tried to pull together and do it on their own, knowing their upper level management didnt have their backs. The players, Strasburg included, accepted the situation, and they have grown ,and will grow, because of it. You can bet most all of them will be looking to getout of D.C. as soon as possible (any who dont would just be the guys who are only playing for a paycheck anyway)

Meanwhile, if you’re ever having a bad day, just imagine this – a baseball team owned by Marge Schott, run by Mike Rizzo, and managed by Bobby Cox – brrrrrrrrr

Sign Josh Hamilton to play left. Between Costanza, Pastor, Reed Johnson we can come up with at least a good platoon in CF. Prado to 3B. Hamilton has got the swagger this team needs, and he can rake it. I think Hamilton would be more of a presence in the line up then Josh Willingham.

The Cardinals run is about to end. Soon they will be facing a team that doesn’t sit their ace pitcher for the playoffs, or doesn’t choke come playoff time.
Either the Giants or the Yankees will beat them convincingly. There is a reason they had only the 5th best record in the NL and about the 9th or 10th best in all of MLB.
The Giants and Yankees are teams that don’t choke it away like the Braves, the Rangers and now the Stasberg-less Nationals.

We can sign Hamilton and somebody will bitch about CF. Sign Bourn, you will pay about $100K for everytime he strikes out.

Josh Willingham? Seriously? My god, if that isn’t typical Braves nonsense, I don’t know what is.

Then we sit around every October and November and wonder what went wrong.

The post-season is certainly an imperfect set-up. It’s a series of short series, after a very long regular season. It’s a championship of the game of summer decided in the biting cold of late October. It’s been 2, then 4, then 8, and now 10 teams, some of whom have proven clearly inferior over the 162 game grind. It’s been having to win one, then 2, then 3, and now possibly 4 short series back to back (to back to back)

We can discuss and debate and argue and pontificate on and on about what it means, what it should be, etc, etc

The thing is – that whatever the flaws, some players, teams, and organizations consistantly find a way to get it done, while others consisatntly fail.

There’s those whose see obstacles that simply must be dealt with and overcome, fair, valid, meaningful, or not.

And there’s those who see an endless source of rationalizations and excuses

There are champions, and there are losers. And winning the games isnt necessarily what shows us which are which.

Yankees and Cardinals – champions — and this is not a 2012 thing, it’s the history of baseball

Braves and Washington DC – losers – over and over and over

I don’t always agree, but hard to argue that Mark DeRosa would not have turned it around last night…
