Diamondbacks Considering Trading Kubel Or Parra By Mark Polishuk [October 11 at 10:17pm CST]
The Diamondbacks are weighing whether Jason Kubel or Gerardo Parra is a better fit as their everyday left fielder in 2012, GM Kevin Towers tells Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. The Snakes are also looking for help at shortstop and third base this winter, and Towers said those decisions will affect the direction that Arizona takes in left field.
Piecoro projects the 2013 D’Backs outfield as Justin Upton remaining with the team and playing right field, Adam Eaton playing center, and one of Kubel or Parra in left, leaving A.J. Pollock as the fourth outfielder. The loser of the Kubel/Parra decision would become expendable along with Chris Young, who has already been rumored to be on the trading block. Young is owed $8.5MM in 2013 and his $11MM option for 2014 carries a $1.5MM buyout, and Piecoro reports that the D’Backs expect to eat some of that money in any Young trade.
Kubel signed a two-year, $15MM deal with Arizona last December and he hit 30 homers with a .253/.328/.506 batting line in 2012, though he slumped in the second half of the season, posting just a .745 OPS after the All-Star break. Parra posted a .727 OPS in 430 plate appearances last year and provided his usual excellent glovework, recording a +13.8 UZR/150 rating. It’s a clear choice between hitting and defense for the Snakes, though contracts also play a role — while Kubel will earn $7.5MM next year, Parra is arb-eligible for the second time this winter and is under control through 2015 as a Super Two player.
Towers mentioned how defense was an important factor at Chase Field and that he wanted the team to be less reliant on home runs, leaving Piecoro to speculate that this could mean the D’Backs could move away from Kubel in left and Chris Johnson at third base.
In other team news, Piecoro hears that Trevor Bauer isn’t likely to be traded. D’Backs managing general partner Ken Kendrick sounded critical of Bauer last week, leading to some speculation that the team had soured on the highly-touted 21-year-old. If Arizona actually did make Bauer available, the 2011 third overall pick would instantly become one of the biggest trade chips on the market this offseason.
“The Braves have Uggla the walk machine, and 218 hitter.”
Yeah,a lot is made of his walks and some overall key numbers, but having a player like Popeye and his propensity for 2 month slumps is hard to deal with.
Parra might be a nice addition. Good LF, average CF it appears. He’s averaged 133 games a season, with a .280/.332/.400/.732 line (93 OPS+) and 81 Ks a year.
Alert: Those posting thousand word comments should know that the average board groupie will not read it. I read only short postings that are to the point. Perhaps I’m the only one.
well obviously cf a man of your many talents
takes the time out of his day to tell us of our weaknesses

Nowhere Man – I wouldn’t worry too much about we old timers who know it all cause most of us are sick anyway and maybe you won’t have to listen to us much longer. Then YOU can know it all. We’ll be glad to leave you the knowledge – if only you listen to it.
Joe Biden would fit in great on this blog. He’s old, think he knows everything and scoffs at any opinion by anyone else.
Actually, this is true (though I doubt the poster in question sees the irony in his characterization). The veep is kind of a “Oh, horsebleep” guy, and frankly, so am I. The older you are, the more horsebleep you’ve smelled, you tend to recognize the scent awful darn quickly, and you tend to have less patience with the stench.
This forum, by the way, is a most excellent example of this very thing, LOL.
How pitchers rise and fall. Two years ago–or less–JJ and Hanson looked like studs on the front end of a boss starting staff. And now…? Don’t go after swisher or overpay for anybody who is in their 30s.
I know you have been a JT fan, I have always been an AV and Delgado fan.
I was stunned when Wren traded Delgado to the Cubs for a couple month rental and then was stunned when he traded AV to the Cubs.
I know folks on here wanted AV to start, but I wanted him in the pen. I think his 2013 is going to rival the first year of KRod, and our pen would be really tough with 2 good leftys and 2 power righties.
I hope JT can turn the corner, I really do.
I thought Delgado was turning the corner the same time Minor did, and was getting ready to be a “player” in the rotation.
I really would not have a problem with trading BOTH if we could get a hitter and a Shields like guy for the rotation.
“How pitchers rise and fall. Two years ago–or less–JJ and Hanson looked like studs on the front end of a boss starting staff. And now…? Don’t go after swisher or overpay for anybody who is in their 30s.”
Co-Sign abt Swisher, He’s too streaky and will strike out 125+ times, we alerady have enough hitters who are like that…And good point about both Double J and Big Red….
flange, I really liked Arodys, also. Think he has a good chance to be really good.
I think both Teheran and Delgado are in the Dominican this winter, though I don’t know when they might go. The league starts in the next couple of days, sometime. Maybe we’ll get some indication on Teheran, especially. If he can have some good outings there, then maybe he’s ironed out his mechanical issues. We’ll see.
The Braves announced that they agreed to a contract extension through 2014 with general manager Frank Wren. Wren’s previous contract covered the 2012-13 seasons.
In related moves the Braves promoted Bruce Manno to the role of vice president and assistant GM/player development and John Coppolella to the role of assistant GM.
Well deserved. Although I’m surprised it’s not longer than just a one year extension. Oh well. Happy to see them promote Manno and Coppolella too.
Efrim, I did read one scouting report from mid-August where the guy absolutely trashed Teheran’s breaking ball, gave him a 40 on it and felt he could not project it any better, either. That’s worrisome.
OnlyBraves – Believe me – there were plenty here who wanted them locked up. I never thought Jurrjens would be with the Braves long term – not with the rest of the younguns in the pipeline.
Still not sure you won’t see Hanson with a tomahawk on his uni next year, though.

Is Delgado’s that much better, though? I haven’t seen a good one. The movement on his fastball is certainly better from what I’ve seen.
He needs to work on the slider more. That needs to be incorporated into the mix. Perhaps ditch the curveball all together.
Isn’t it with curves, some guys can spin it and some guys can’t? It’s sort of something that’s just “in the wrist”?
Zimmermann was 95-96mph last night out of the pen for the Nationals. With his fastball/slider combo, you’d think he’d miss more bats. Nationals have three strong 1/2 starters, man. Sucks.
Agree with all of DOB’s points except for keeping Hanson. The guy may have talent but his fastball has no movement and he can’t hold runners on. The hitch in his throwing motion kills him.

Do you remember a year ago? How the Talk about trading Double J for Adam Jones was the Hot Rumor on The Streets?
I believe they wanted Prado too? I wouldn’t have done that. JJ straight up for something, anything. Not the “Greinke-like return” that Frank wanted. I was really concerned about his knee; he’d also been injured in 2 straight 2nd halves.
He needs to work on the slider more. That needs to be incorporated into the mix. Perhaps ditch the curveball all together.
Whatever, can’t be a top starter without a breaking ball, unless you’re gonna channel Mario Soto or something.
One guy says he was tipping pitches, one guy says he’s dropping on his back leg too much, one guy says he’s showing the ball too much out of his hand, yada yada yada. Who knows? A top kid such as Teheran has a bad year, and folks start looking for all sorts of things to point to as the reason.
First, thank God DOB isn’t running the Braves. Second, a contract extension for the GM who is paying $13 million a year to Dan Uggla: who has single-handedly kept the Braves OUT of the playoffs for 2 straight years.
Second, a contract extension for the GM who is paying $13 million a year to Dan Uggla: who has single-handedly kept the Braves OUT of the playoffs for 2 straight years.
Yep, makes sense to me.
Again, same as folks not looking around the league at some of the other starting rotations. If the Uggla contract is Frank Wren’s big zero, then he’s among the Top 10 in the sport(which I think he is). GM’s make terrible decisions every year, Wren really doesn’t. He’s a strong GM.
Reds had 4 starters top 200 innings – Cueto, Latos, Bailey, Arroryo and Mike Leake, their 5th starter finish with 179 – which would of tied for the lead on the Braves with Mike Minor and Tim Hudson.
Yeah, for the record (and Murph can look this up) I was a big proponent of trading Jurrjens when his value was sky high (a couple years ago in July when his ERA was like, .01)
Yeah, for the record (and Murph can look this up) I was a big proponent of trading Jurrjens when his value was sky high
I’ll vouch for that, so that Murph doesn’t have to look it up.
Though I pretty much thought you were on crack to want to trade the guy who should have been starting the All-Star game that year. Even foreseeing the guy’s demise, it still would have been hard to pull the trigger on such a deal.
But I figured since the Braves had the 2nd lowest ERA before the All Star Break, and since Teheran, Delgado, and Vizcaino were all waiting in the wings, that trading our top starter (at a time when he was performing beyond his limits) wouldn’t be the craziest thing in the world
Nice to wake up and head to work listening to Brian Kelly talk about ND on Mike & Mike for College Gameday and also great to hear Frank Wren was extended another year and Bruce Manno promoted….
TOBF-
Great find on the DBacks article…..Me, I have always been greatly enamored w/ Parra from afar and I think he’d be a good get for the team if they wanted to put him out in CF….rocket arm too so no more Bourn and McLouth lollipop throws into 2b….
My only real concern w/ him is whether he will hit away from Chase because I think the D is there wherever they put him….AND I think he would be a good leadoff hitter too
Comparing his numbers against LHP to Bourn’s since theyre both LHH…..Bourn has a bit more power against LHP but Parra gets on base more, though Bourn had probably his best year against lefties in 2012.
I certainly wouldn’t mind him though….he’s another scrappy gritty type of player we could use
I do remember that jeffrey. (I used to read and comment occasionally under random names). I would have been for that if we received a monster haul from selling on him then. I didn’t expect him to keep up the ERA, like with Dempster this year.
Efrim – I wasn’t trying to make a point about IP – my toe is infected again and the osteomyelitis is back in the bone and I haven’t been paying much attention to the playoffs – thought I’d heard that Cueto had to have surgery and Bailey and Latos were hurt too.
Let’s see. Two years of 34-year-old Josh Willingham for, perhaps, Delgado or Teheran and who else?
Surrendering either of those pitchers for a ballplayer in his mid-thirties and likely only a two-season shelf life with the Braves seems steep. Giving the Twins a package plus either of the two aforementioned pitchers seems steeper.
Wouldn’t mind seeing Willingham in a Braves’ uniform, but the price has to be reasonable. Willingham is a short term fix. Is he worth a key prospect and more?
It’s ashame really…I think we could have beaten any team that’s left in the National league. Infield fly rule
Three errors. Without those, that ruling is just a footnote.
Some fans are just having a hard time wrapping their minds around the fact that the Braves’ sloppy play cost them the WC game. I think it’s called denial.
I would have been for that if we received a monster haul from selling on him then
That’s why I was a proponent of trading him. In my eyes he was a solid starter who could easily put up a 3.something ERA. But during the first half of last year, he was ridiculous. And since we had depth at SP, why not consider trade options?
But on another note, since I poke fun at people who judge using hindsight, I can’t boast about this too much. Who would’ve known that after posting an ERA of 1.something that Jair would say, “eh…..I quit.”
Three errors. Without those, that ruling is just a footnote.
I am never one to blame the umps/refs for a loss. But in this situation, you’re saying that if the Braves didn’t make errors then they would’ve won the game? Well what if the Cards didn’t make mistakes? Like……dropping a popup with 2 on and 1 out?
If one of the Braves’ mistakes had been ruled an out, that could’ve been the difference of 3 runs and oh…..that was the run differential.
While I agree that our errors cost us the game, the Cards did make an error that could have cost them the game. We never got to see what would have happened. Despite BMac’s troubles all year, I’d have loved to see him batting with the bases loaded and 1 out.
When Bourn came up, I was afraid that he’d strike out. Too many times, I’ve seen him in that situation and he Ks.
My fear is that even either Teheran or Delgado straight up for Willingham is WAY too steep for what anounts to the two seasons of viable baseball that Willigham will be capable of.
Jeff R, I concur. I would consider Hanson, as well as one or two 2nd tier pitchers from the minors to be a suitable option. The Twins need ANY kind of pitching, and a Hanson to Minny trade would make sense for a fan base made up primarily of Norsemen.
I will say this in Wren’s defense. He’s been mostly shrewd in his deals (the Delgado for Dumpster deal would have been awful, IMO). But Wren hasn’t pulled any Schuerholz sell-the-future-for-one-more-post season gambits.
Wren might be able to wrangle Willingham for less than what’s being bandied about. That is, if the Braves decide to pursue Willingham.
I am. But I will admit, I’m less excited for the hot stove season than in previous years. Big sense of missed opportunity for me after the last two seasons. 91, 89, 94 friggin wins and one postseason series. That hurts. And we just gotta hope that the team can continue to be a force in the regular season, because the playoffs are a crapshoot anyway…..unless you’re the Cardinals, I guess.
Yeah, definitely would make more sense if theyre dealing one of those two to get someone like a Gordon or Headley or something of the like, under 30 and controllable….
Jeff R, I concur. I would consider Hanson, as well as one or two 2nd tier pitchers from the minors to be a suitable option. The Twins need ANY kind of pitching, and a Hanson to Minny trade would make sense for a fan base made up primarily of Norsemen.
MiaBchBravesFan, Not sure the Twins would bite on Hanson. But I think Wren could do as you suggest: mid-range pitching prospects for Willingham.
Of course, Wren has to compete with other teams for Willingham, I presume. That could jack up the price. But I’m a big believer in walking away when the price of anything or anyone, in this case, exceed the limits I’ve set.

Diamondbacks Considering Trading Kubel Or Parra

Parra might be a nice addition. Good LF, average CF it appears. He’s averaged 133 games a season, with a .280/.332/.400/.732 line (93 OPS+) and 81 Ks a year.

Actually, this is true (though I doubt the poster in question sees the irony in his characterization). The veep is kind of a “Oh, horsebleep” guy, and frankly, so am I.

In related moves the Braves promoted Bruce Manno to the role of vice president and assistant GM/player development and John Coppolella to the role of assistant GM.

Is Delgado’s that much better, though? I haven’t seen a good one. The movement on his fastball is certainly better from what I’ve seen.
He needs to work on the slider more. That needs to be incorporated into the mix. Perhaps ditch the curveball all together.

Surrendering either of those pitchers for a ballplayer in his mid-thirties and likely only a two-season shelf life with the Braves seems steep. Giving the Twins a package plus either of the two aforementioned pitchers seems steeper.
