id offer bourne 2 yrs at 25 million or whatever the minimum qualifying offer required to get the draft picks. id go for victorino and even go 4 years knowing , its one year too many. pagan isnt a bad choice either. a banged up david wright for 5 years 75 million wouldnt be that horrid of an offer either.id definitely start by trying to secure heyward, freeman and prado to extended contracts, locking each up til they are 33.david ross should be signed again too. moylan looked like he had good movement if location is locked in and price is reasonable. big men intimidate. all in all i’m hoping to stick around for another season of braves baseball

I think you’ll see FW make a qualifying offer to Bourn. He will probably also make a multi year offer that Boras will probably reject. Personally, I am hoping Bourn goes elsewhere as I really don’t like my leadoff hitter to be so inconsistent.

Actually, it’s too bad Nate wasn’t healthy while in Atlanta. We’re seeing the Nate McLouth today that was playing in Pittsburgh before he was traded to Atlanta.

For some to have the nerve to say he wouldn’t do well if he were back here, is ridiculous. He is under incredible pressure with the Orioles in a pennant race.

I hate it when some idiots on here get personal about these players. These guys are human beings that deserve to be shown some respect.

y’alll need to pay more attention, I been talking about McNate’s Oriole Odyssey for weeks.

I’ve been asking a lot longer than that how the Braves could continue to play a guy with a torn abdomen muscled, without telling the public, and basically released him by putting him on the DL and demoting him.

I don’t believe much I hear from them about injuries. Already this fall we’ve got McCann saying he needs surgery and Wren saying he needs rest.

All I know is the Nate McLouth that played for the Pirates can play for the Braves if he is healthy.

Great column DOB! Lots of thought AND research. I agree with most of it. I had no idea about Pagan’s numbers. Didn’t know he was gonna be a FA either. Not even close as to whether to go after him or try to sign Bourn IMO. Bourn strikes out wayyyy too much for my taste.

I’m not sure I would pick up McInjured’s option. I know he’s done a lot for the franchise, but what he will do from now on is what you would look at. He is in major decline IMO. Never will be the stick he has been, and is a defensive liability. He’s tried to make himself a better fielder, but just hasn’t been able to do it. Remains lazy on blocking balls except those right in front of him. I would let him go or trade him, let Ross be my starter and have Gattis, Bethancourt, or some backup from elsewhere back Rossy up. He’s already ahead of McCann defensively and this year was better offensively also. I have always liked BMac as a player until this year, it’s just the law of diminishing returns.

Don’t believe I would go so far as trading a Delgado or Teheran for Willingham. That seems like it would be a trade that would come back to haunt the Braves since they are both 10 years or more younger than JW. I would rather go after somebody like a Tyler Colvin. The Rockies need pitching worse than anybody, so maybe their asking price wouldn’t be so high. The Braves might could get by there with a couple of their better minor league arms that will be ML ready soon. Gilmartin might be one. I would trade them Hanson in a heartbeat instead of either of those 2 young studs. Hanson’s gone to SoCal as soon as he becomes a FA anyway, so why not swap him now? Colvin seems to be growing as a player, the only question with him would be how much of his growth this year was due to the Coors Field effect. That’s it, Hanson and a minor league pitcher for Colvin.

David Wright is NOT. A Free Agent. The Mets have a team option on him like the Braves do on Brian McCann. The only way he’s available is by trade as the Mets aren’t going to let him go for nothing in return.

Tomas

I like Willingham, wish the Braves have had sign him last year, because that guy can hit.

I would like to add a name to the list of targets. Torii Hunter. He had a pretty good year, 313 AVG 817 OPS including an 868 OPS vs lefties, still pretty solid defensively. He is 37 years old, excellent clubhouse presence, and while Angels love him and want him back as was reported I just can’t see it with Bourjous, Trout, Trumbo, Wells, and Morales as the outfielders/DH.

Torii Hunter vs Josh Willingham, obviously in terms of money and power Willingham is the better option, but defensively Torii is still much better, and he doesn’t have Willingham’s back problems.

Hunter will probably command 3 years 36 million in my opinion. I don’t think that’s an overpay, and they don’t have to trade Teheran, or Delgado to get him. I want both Hunter and Bourn.

Wish List:
- Michael Bourn CF 4 years 48 million.
- Torii Hunter LF 3 years 36 million.
- David Ross C 2 years 5 million.
- Reed Johnson OF 2 years 3 million.
- Peter Moylan RHP 1 year 1.2 million.
- Chad Durbin RHP 1 year 1.3 million.
- Trade for Gregg Dobbs 1.5 million

That’s a total of 32 million added to next years payroll. It depends on arb eligible players but I think Braves have around 28-32 million instead of the 22-25 DOB said, don’t know if he had added the salaries of Durbin, Diaz, Hinske, Wilson, Baker, Overbay, Moylan, Batista, Johnson, and Ross.

That’ll give ATL a great bench and a balanced lineup.

Basically Alex Gordon is a poor man’s left handed version of Martin Prado who isn’t as versatile as Prado (Gordon plays only left field, Prado can play just about anywhere),

And he plays a GG LF, something we’d lose if we moved Prado to 3rd. He has also played a lot of 3rd (though not as well as Prado). While he is LH, he is a .300 hitter and does have power (hit 23 HR in 2011). He’d be a good option, especially if we can get a RH centerfielder.

Gordon has played…

363 games at LF
329 games at 3B
40 games at 1B
3 games at RF
1 game at SS

Normally I agree with dob but I don’t want Mac at 13,swisher or Ross at all. I think we need to take a step backwards to take a giant leap in the future. I go for a trade for youth at third and try for opt from Texas. They need what we have pitching and I would trade any of it not named medlin. Then we go hard after Myers. They need again pitching and a second baseman. This will not be popular but I go Prado Hanson and a close pitching prospect. They have Gordon for left witch is what Myers plays so I would push hard for these two kids to put with Freeman and heyward. Either way I will watch are record every game next year go braves

Got my Giants advancing. I know a lot of folks here were pulling for the Reds. Sorry about that. But the Giants are tied for my 2nd favorite team behind the Braves.

When not playing the Braves, I have some fandom for both the Giants (lived there for 15 years) and the Rockies (closest team).

Now, I’d really love to see Oakland pull this one out tonight. Nothing against the Tigers, just don’t really see anything exciting about Detroit’s team.

But it’s gotta be the Orioles against the evil empire Yankees!! The O’s would be hard to pull against in any future series’.

Perhaps i”m in the minority, but as long as the Moneyball mentality keeps sending stat geeks like Shaun here, i’m against the A’s. Seems they try and convince everyone that baseball players are robots who produce the same day in and day out, no matter if they are having a good day, got a good nights sleep, have the flu or their testicles are caught in a mouse trap.

Until these robots realize that stats are only a part of the game, I would prefer the Moneyball heros stay in the fantasy world of Hollywood.

If the A’s win, it will be the same to stat geeks as it would be giving a hyper kid three candy bars! Wouldn’t be something I would care to see.
