Just read UKUGA’s comment… You perfectly described the feelings of those at the game on Friday. I hope MLB takes note and gets rid of the one game pay off format. I hope some one will apologize to Braves fans for what has to be the worst call in baseball history. The fans deserve that, instead of sweeping what happened under the rug or pretending it did not happen. Braves organization… Stand up for your fans… Maybe beer bottles raining down on the field was not right, but ignoring the REASON those bottles were flying is almost as much of an insult to the fans.
For anybody to say the Braves couldn’t have come back and won the game in spite of everything, they obviously were in a coma on May 2nd and September 2nd.
Well, of course, the Braves could have come back, Mitchell. Thing is, you don’t want the Braves to cede runs to their opponent on sloppy play and obvious errors.
A team – the Braves – that wins 94 games and makes it to the post season should be better than that. And that’s not holding the Braves to high standards. Good, fundamental baseball – fielding and throwing, in this instance – should be a given for a team that achieved what the Braves’ achieved this past season.

Wren isn’t leading this winter on the pitching front. He’s rightly prioritizing the offense as in need of strengthening.
The Braves had exceptional pitching most of the season, but it’s unreasonable – in fact, not smart – to expect the pitching staff to carry this team throughout the ‘13 campaign. The need a better offense. and I’d say that means more than power: but guys who can advance and score runners without having to go yard.

I really hope Wren comes threw with some solid position player additions. I see Bourn being out of the price range for us still. While most are actually happy to see him go, he’ll be a huge loss. Regardless of his high amount of K’s and his bad 2nd half, overall he was a huge part of this team. Providing Premium Defense and electrifying speed on the bases. Have to remember that his 1st half was flat out amazing as well. When it comes to replacing him I think defense should be priority.
Having Prado take over 3rd base will improve Infield defense, and then adding someone with more power for LF is ideal. As of right now Prado will be the leadoff man unless a better option is added.
Still have questions looming about McCann, I seriously think they should just do the buyout if he ends up needing to miss 2 months or more of the 2013 season. Just can’t pay someone 12 million knowing you’ll be without him for 33% of the season. Hopefully this isn’t the case.
Dan Uggla is a complete wild card going forward. Really can’t count on him as a major producer. Braves need another RH power bat. What kind of Uggla will we get? Good chance we get a Uggla that is falling off a cliff. Hope not.
Most important thing is seeing improvements from Heyward and Freeman as our top producers in the middle of our lineup.
The Braves had ample opportunity to tie the game or to go ahead after the botched call, but Michael Bourn struck out with the bases loaded.
Kind of like the Bartman situation with the Cubs – yeah, they play affected the game, but they had only to get the next batter out and they could well have won the game.
No pitching this winter? Darn… Looking forward to a young rotation in 2014. A 38 yr old is our ace. Or wait, is it a guy with 24 career starts? Yippee!
How are we spending 25mil on offense? That frightens me. He might resign Bourn. YIKES! Or maybe he’ll overpay for Cody Ross. Or is he considering not picking up Mac’s option and going after Napoli. I hope he does well, because there isn’t a lot of good offense in FA this winter.
Vabraves – If the recovery from surgery is 4-5 moths (or less as some reports state), then he’ll be ready to go after an extended Spring Training in the worst case scenario- kind of like Hudson last year. Not sure why he’d wait any longer than early next month if surgery is needed.
Trey, I saw the Pirates broadcast ROOT that pirates tv booth interviewed chipper jones. it happened past Monday Oct 1st, Braves lost 3 to 1. have a good day
Already seems pretty confusing tho, McCann says he’ll need surgery and Wren says he doesn’t think he does. Best thing to do it to get this figured out ASAP.
Only BRaves – It’s commonly accepted that the amount they can spend is around $23 million. YOu also have arbitration increases to EOF, Heyward (should be steep), Kimbrel (again, should be steep) and a couple of others. They also need to extend Prado NOW and possibly Heyward.
Bottom line is they don’t have all the money you think they do to put into those two openings and they don’t need pitching – especially a pither with a salary as large as your current Man Crush.
Too many times I’ve watched players skip surgery, try to play injured, and then end up getting the surgery that they should have gotten months before… I hope if there’s even a question that BMac gets under the knife ASAP and gets that shoulder fixed.
He’s heading into a contract year. He has to take that into consideration. Better to miss the first few weeks of the season and come back 100% than to play another season at 50%. It could have a drastic impact on his wallet.
I have the Braves payroll being in the 68-70mil range after ARB raises (and trading Tommy)… about 25mil free to spend. Don’t use it Ross, Bourn, or Upton. Please!
What we need is a star OF slugger who mashes righties. A superstar. That I seriously doubt is happening though. This is still Wren, a guy who always says he likes the real athletic types. I take this meaning defense, speed, contact players. Bourn is all that except for the contact part.
First, there’s no guarantee that they trade Hanson. Second, I’ve seen estimates that go higher than that for current players – eg. If they re-sign David Ross and Reed Johnson, they’ll get raises, too. And how about spending for the bench and possibly the bullpen? I don’t think you’re taking everything into account.
I don’t think with J.Upton’s rotten attitude that he’ll be here. I mean I don’t know him, but don’t they say he can sulk and not play hard sometimes? With CJ gone now I think they emphasize on getting leader types in here, not attitude projects who can be real great one day.
Hugo – I’d say Kimbrel could be a Super Two – Kid’s set records both years in the league – and even if not this year might well be the time to lock him up longer term – what will he cost if they wait until next year and he has yet another record setting year?
Bartman had nothing on that call we got. It was an iffy foul ball and a not so good fielder going after it. Mac may not have been himself this year but he still had good numbers for the year with the bases loaded and probably the only person who was worse than him lately was Bourn. Even though they dug the hole that would have been a great chance to climb out of it. Wouldn’t have been the first time this year that they had done it. It was a big call late in a game when outs and runners are precious. Bartman was just a convienent scapegoat for a miserable fanbase. Should have never had an effect on the game. I am glad though that the braves manned up and took responsibilty for their role in the loss. You usually don’t win three error games but who knows, we’ve won crazier games this year.
On another note, I will not be that sad to see Bourn go. Guy had a great first half but doesn’t really capitilize on his speed or at least he hasn’t here. We need a centerfielder and a leftfielder. Happy hunting Wren.
And even if not in arb, I’d be willing to bet they give Kimbrel a significant raise – even if they don’t need to. Sooner or later they’ll try to lock him up and they want him happy and not disgruntled because they dissed him.

Jeff, I know it was upsetting, but unfortunately things like that do happen in baseball. Remember, Bill Buckner once allowed a ball to go through his legs during the World Series causing his team to lose.
***************************************************************
Hope CHIPPER will not always remembered like BILL BUCKNER. when that throw when onto RF my frist thought was of BILL. At the time I was not upset with BILL I wanted METS to win.
I was pointing out Kimbrel wasn’t arb-eligible for the sake of accuracy. Don’t think he would qualify for super two. Braves might very well offer him a multi-year contract, though.
Not much need to spend on the BP Lew… Gearrin replaces CMart, and we either re-sign Durbin for around a mil (what he made this year) or we get someone else for around that price. Bench has Ross and Reed each making 1.6mil. Pastornicky, Janish, and some 1B round out the bench. (still pretty cheap)
Justin Upton has received MVP consideration as a 21 year old and 23 year old. He is only 24 years old and is a 2 time All Star and also has a silver slugger to his name. Pretty good accomplishments before the age of 25. While he did have a down year in 2012 I still see a young player who is figuring things out just like Jason Heyward will likely continue to do over the next 2 seasons.
Justin Upton has 3 years remaining on his contract at 38.5 million.
2013 9.75 mil
2014 14.25 mil
2015 14.5 mil
Owns a career line of 278/357/475/832 which is just about better than anyone did on the Braves in 2012.
George-George – Buckner never was a HOFer to begin with – only a few idiotic Braves’ fans will remember Chipper for that error and not his entire HOF career.
Well someone should replace CMart. Not paying him 1mil to let opponents hit him at a .277/.319/.426/.745 clip. He also can’t get righties out .311/.329/.527/.856, so he’s basically a loogy.
Buckner was also so much different. Team in a market that loves whining and moaning and feeling miserable and so sorry for themselves. 9th inning. Game 6. World Series. About to clinch first world series in 70 or so years. Just much different than early in a first round wild card game.
At least Buckner’s team had a series and another game. All Chipper got was a stupid march madness game. All those years we won divisions and now when we can benefit from the wc spot they change the format to this. Selig never fails to surprise. Wouldn’t it be something if the cards did it again this year. Winning the march madness game to get into the maindraw then clinching the championship on their homefield that was clinched by Melky the cheat in an exhibition game. What a year for baseball.
Surely someone in AAA can take over the long-relief role, and be about 600-700k cheaper. CMart hasn’t been very impressive, no need to pay him now. Gearrin can take Durbin’s spot (which used to be Moylan’s).
Hard for me to believe baseball season is over. CHIPPERS career is over. What va sad way for it to end. We all would have liked a story book ending, but I would have been more than satisfied with 4 or 5 more wins, in other words get to NLCS and maybe win a game in that. That would have be I realalistic hope. I am sad for CHIPPER and sad for ATLANTA fans. After that debockle Friday FREDI should be fired but won’t be, BUD should be fired but won’t be, JOE SIMPSON should be fired and might be.
Considering that the only times you ev er even use a long reliever is in blowouts or the trhree times each year you have a rain delay issue with your starter and that Martinez is a pitcher capable of going six innings and can strike out batters, he’ll likely be retained.
For someone who doesn’t want young pitching, you certainly suggest miinor league pitching often enough.

You make a good point when you say that you don’t use your long reliever often. So, why pay extra for one? CMart will be making about 1mil next year. We don’t need to spend that much.
I do want/like young pitching. I’m just not a fan of having your rotation be dominated by it when you’re a contender.
I will be rooting for WAS and CIN in playoffs as far as they go. WAS because of the EX BRAVES on thier roster and of course DAVEY. CIN because of TODD FRAZIER and JOEY V and DUSTY who never gets enough credit as a MGR.
Still have questions looming about McCann, I seriously think they should just do the buyout if he ends up needing to miss 2 months or more of the 2013 season
So how does all this work? If they buy him out what about the surgery and rehab? They have to decide with in a few days of the WS ending, right.
If they cut him loose and then he has surgery, what? Workmans comp? Cobra?
Chas, Man have you nailed the situation. I can think of only two current starting position players that I would keep for next year. Fredi Freeman and Jason Heyward. The rest of these clowns including Fredi Gonzales belong with the original clown master CMR — Deputy Dawg
Let me get this straight: You watch Braves baseball games, and you wouldn’t keep Martin Prado?
Unless that was just a inadvertent mistake of an omission on your part, it says all I need to know about your talent evaluation.
Interesting to see how season ticket sales are for next year. May have to go back to the 80’s and 3000 fans in the park to change the culture and the fabric of this team. – Benny
Braves had one of the worst collapses in history in 2011, and I’ll bet you were among the many on this blog saying they needed to blow it up and that attendance would be down drastically in 2012.
They kept the team together, won 94 games and a wild-card spot, and attendance was slightly UP, not drastically down. Sorry, man.
Keep saying it and maybe one year it’ll actually happen and you’ll be satisfied, right?
Well, after a day of no baseball and some fun (for me, at least) college football games, I still have no desire to watch any baseball. Got my second call into Bud’s office yesterday. Going to call it again today (and every day until they apologize to Braves fans) to register my disdain for MLB and this debacle.
On another subject, what is so hard for folks to understand that the Braves need a CF’er and a replacement for Chipper, preferrably one who is a RH banger??? We don’t need another 2nd baseman or another starting pitcher.
Really FW’s job this winter could be fairly easy if he can fill those 2 needs. Then it’s just a matter or tweaking the bench.
Ha, yeah it’s listed that way on my corporate insurance policy. I still call it “workman’s” when I talk to the women there about it, though. Old habits die hard.
Thanks DS1
The call won’t do any good, but I will feel better. I don’t see how they could NOT over turn that call. during the delay when UMP was on the phone I was sure they would.
Oh, and Deputy Dawg: You’d only keep Freeman and Heyward. So not only would you dump Prado, but also Simmons, a future All-Star shortstop and Gold Glove winner who’ll be one of the best shortstops in the NL next season?
Tyler Kepner @TylerKepner
Lost in that inning for the Tigers was the 2-out, 2-strike hit by Infante to bring up Cabrera. Infante had a big double last night, too.
O’brien I hope you are right about Simmons but look at the facts he has been injury prone in the first season maybe that won’t continue. He for sure has the talent to reach those goals.
For those of us who have been around since the start of this franchise here in Atlanta. We are tired of hearing excuses from JS in his letters to season ticket holders.
Chipper choked the game away. No other way to spin it. Just like Wohlers giving up the HR in the ‘96 WS it was a turning point.

He’s heading into a contract year. He has to take that into consideration. Better to miss the first few weeks of the season and come back 100% than to play another season at 50%. It could have a drastic impact on his wallet.

Sorry, man.
