Btw, DOB, about the song. I missed the first two outs of the game, so I didn’t have time to read the blog, and I just went and played the song after the game w/o reading the lyrics (I usually always read before I play a song) but I saw that it was Waylon’s kid, so I just played the song – what the hey?! Hello everyone! Blame the call all you want. The Braves “D”, and bats didn’t come through. Tough to win with no hitting. This winter a LF with power, and a improved bench would help. Braves had a heck of a run, and I’m proud of them. yes it wasn’t pretty, but a goold season. To the Braves for a npther great season…….
Well, it is what it is. Just need a couple of tweaks here, and there this winter. Braves will be back, and looking forward to another season next year. It was a great run, and I’m good with it.
You couldn’t really ask for worse finishes than this team has provided in the last three seasons. Bobby’s perfunctory exit after another NLDS loss, 2011’s Choketember-toberfest, and now this.
Anybody have any confidence in these guys when it’s all on the line?
It’s tough, Chop Chop, but, finally, Frank should have the money to fix the offensive deficit that has plagued this team for so long. I think the off-season will be exciting this year.
All, have a good one! I think Braves need hitting next year, and a LF with power would help. Peace my friends, and talk tomorrow. Braves will be back…… “Go!!!!!Braves!!!!! Talk in a few days……
Yes, the chipper error was a big deal. When Simmons freaked out and made an error that was a sinking feeling too. When Fredo called for a suicide freak choke bunt that was unsettling. When the Braves stranded 35 of 12 runners, that was no bueno, and when Uggla threw the ball to Chuck Knobloch that was not surprising, and if that what it was, we could say 110% choke job.
I was yelling at Derrick Lowe once saying something about how he was stealing his money and some mommy flipped out and I got a lecture from security. Not one curse word was uttered. I wasn’t even mad, I was just doing some mild heckling, trying to get some value out of a game where Derrick Lowe was getting pounded and I think Jamey Moyer was on cruise control the night after I saw Halliday toss a 2 hitter.
But “the call” matters because here is that team of pro chokers of epic proportions making one last come back, one last effort to dispel the myth. Too little too late? Maybe. Probably even. But the call was not about was it a tie goes to the runner, was the pitch 1″ outside and called a strike. It was so bad that Atlanta fans got up out of their seats and threw plastic Bud Light bottles onto the field. Think about what it takes to get Braves fans to to throw Bud Light, not even Budweiser, Bud Light bottles onto the field. The call was not, oh, it happens, sometimes you don’t get a break, it was a true stinker of a call.
And now the Braves truly are those choke artists that they probably were before tonight, a team powered by their backup catcher, let down by their hero and failed by their big free agent and now add the umps, Joe Torre and Yadier Molinia’s tweets into the mix.
It took me until the All -Star break to get over the collapse and what it meant to have Braves to be this futile after the Yankees kick our jock in 1996, or as another poster put it, 1966, and now with all the HoF pitching gone, Andruw Jones at 300 pounds and Chipper in a deer stand, I won’t watch any post season this year, just like last year, and I would not be surprised if I never really follow baseball the same again.
To Joe Simpson and the embarrassed by the fans set, a tirade of profanity in your direction. That wonderful display of trash, that scene of mass litter equaled only by my own Old 4th Ward neighborhood or the 1979 Disco Riot at Comiskey, the scene of such disgrace, that Braves fans, was your finest hour.
Yes, Brava. And Scooby-Doo. And heck, not ashamed to admit it, Jimmy Neutron (I like the plays on The Birds, and the Partridge Family, and others they did on that series) Silly, I know.
The Braves have been in the playoffs in 16 of the last 22 years. I’m used to postseason baseball. It isn’t a really good season unless we win a series or two or three when we get there.
Not that I care who wins it all, but I think I will root for Baltimore! It’s kinda nice, to have some new blood in the post-season, and it’s been kind of a nice story, with the Orioles having a pretty decent season for a change!
Hell, yeah, count! I agree. It was our finest hour as Braves fans. It embodied all the pent up frustration caused by the annual tease that is Braves baseball.
The last time the Detroit Tigers were in the post-season in consecutive years was in 1930s. You have no idea how special the Braves have been. No flippin’ idea.
This one game stuff really sucks. Not because the Braves lost, but in a series at least a team can afford to have a bad game (unless it’s the elimination game of course). This one and done stuff needs to be re-evaluated. These players have played too hard this year to have their entire season hinged on one game.
Simmons called out was a good call but he should have never been bunting in the first place. I don’t believe for a second that Fredi called that from the bench.
Chippers error prob cost the Braves the game but he has done more good than harm for this time. I hate to see him go out like that but it is what it is. I sure am going to miss seeing him in a Braves Uni.
Thanks for all that you’ve done for the Braves Bourn, but don’t let the door hit you in the butt on the way out. You can go strike out 155 times for some other team.
That infield fly was bogus in my opinion. But let’s be honest, how many times have the Braves left the bases loaded this year with 0 or 1 out. Even if the bases were loaded they probably wouldn’t have scored.
Thanks fans for acting a fool and throwing trash :sarcasm: The Braves had the pitcher on the ropes, he was struggling, but since you stupidly caused that delay, that caused STL not to run him back to the mound but instead bring in their closer.
The errors, the bad call, the fans, and the inability to hit with RISP cost the Braves this season.
The length of this post reminds me of a N8 post
Everyone have a good evening. It’s just a game, hopefully the Braves can fix their offensive woes in the offseason. They’ve got the pitching to get them back to postseason, not lets see if they can get an offense to back that up.
I’m not watching any more baseball this season, but am rooting for the A’s. They are my son’s girlfriend’s team and I kinda like them after watching the movie, “Moneyball”.
for those that not from atlanta, you might not get it. those from atlanta do
uga, yeah, I agree with this. For us, it’s just so much closer to home. I stopped at Publix on the way home to grab some beer (to cry in), and the clerks in the store were engaging me about the game because I had on my Braves jersey. We ended up having like a 15 minute conversation about the game.
throwing bottles on the field was not just for this aggressively atrocious call tonight; it was for the kent hrbek/ron gant call in minnesota and the eric gregg game in miami, as well. this time, they made the mistake of jobbing us at home. i’m not one for that sort of behavior, but tonight, i was actually glad to see it.
MIBravesFan, yes, we are. On that note, I’m calling it a night.
The blog ate my last post, so if this one sounds similar, it’s AJC’s fault. I’ve about devastated a 12 pack of Dos Equis (yes, I’m the world’s most interesting woman) so I’m bidding all a good night.
Chipper’s error was a big point. They have been practically worshiping him all season and being led by his inspirational production, and to see him make such an important mistake must have been disheartening
So many things… My ears are still ringing from all the noise by the fans…. I dare anyone to say Atlanta fans are too buttoned up after that game and call. This one game format plus potentially (actually) Chippers last game conjured up a lot of emotion… Add the horrible call… Just the most unbelievable game. Errors men left on base… I’m not sure I can stomach this game and invest so much emotion in this team.
“That Atlanta Braves have a strong and loyal fan base, and a small group of those fans acted in a manner that was uncharacteristic and unacceptable,” Schuerholz’s statement read. “The actions of those fans are not representative of the Atlanta Braves or Major League Baseball. We apologize to the St. Louis Cardinals and to Major League Baseball.”
Say What ??!!! We should be angry John !!! Why not put a better team on the damn field ! I hope every paying fan sees this statement ! Its like we didnt have the right to be angry ! He and Wren needs to be FIRED !!
Sad to see Chipper go out that way. But what do you do? He provided many more good moments than what turns out to be a play that will be remembered because it’s how the season ended. That’s unfortunate.
I saw live and told my son that he wasn’t hustling on that last base hit. Didn’t matter. He got on anyhow. Hamilton got blasted for moping and “giving up” after that fly ball the other day. I’d be lying if I said i wasn’t disappointed that Chipper didn’t bust his ass down the line on that play. Say what you will about Uggla (and I say plenty)…. he busts it EVERY time down the line.
Medlen now knows what Maddux and Glavine knew far too often. Pitchers who pitch to contact often fail more than succeed in the playoffs because teammates will choke under pressure. Nothing new to us Braves fans. Far better defenders than Chipper and Uggla have made errors in post-season games that led to losses. It happens.
That being said, Medlen wasn’t on his game today. He got away with mistakes and didn’t get away with others. But over all his defense let him down.
The bats did what they’ve done all year. Failed miserably against good pitchers. Though having watched Lohse pitch for the Twins all those years, I refuse to call him a good pitcher. Though he was very good this year.
But can anybody REALLY be all that surprised that our lineup failed miserably to get hits with RISP? Didn’t surprise me one bit. Saw it coming.
Kudos to Fredi for pretending he called for that bunt. He took some heat off of Simmons. But non-kudos to him for not getting ejected on that infield fly rule. SOMETHING needed to wake this team up.
Good Riddance to Michael Bourn. He, like Kenny Lofton showed signs of brilliance during his time in Atlanta. But anything more than what he’s getting paid right now is highway robbery on his part. Let some other team find out the hard way that he’s not worth 16 million.
Not sure what to think Wren should do with Mac. Clearly Ross can’t play everyday. Does Wren try and trade Mac to an A.L. team and sign another backup/defensive catcher to share time with Ross until Bethancourt is ready?
This team cannot afford to have Uggla and Mac provide the production they provide at a combined 26 million next year. They simply can’t. Not with having to find 2 of 3 positions to fill (3B, LF and CF). Obviously Prado fills either LF or 3B.
Might be time to trade one of O’flaherty or Venters. Avilan and whichever one they keep will fill the 2 LH bullpen guys just fine. Perhaps trading Venters gets us a LF or a CF that can hit a little bit? Hard to say.
But for the 2nd year in a row, having a dominant bullpen did nothing for this team. Reminds me of Smoltz in the bullpen watching in the playoffs as the team failed to score runs and get him in the game.
Braves could gamble and trade Maholm and put both Teheran and Delgado in the rotation. While waiting for Beachy to come back? And pray that rest allows Hanson to recover because he’s untradable at this point. Then in a worst case scenario Wren could grab a veteran for the rotation to replace Maholm?
My les than 12 hours gut thought is that if Wren wants to keep Delgado and Teheran, our best trade scenario would be perhaps packaging Venters and Maholm for a bat? But who?
Or really go for it and finally trade one of Delgado and or Teheran?
So many questions and not in the mood to really think about most of it.
Freeman and Heyward look ready to lead the team into the future with Simmons and Prado on board as well. That’s 4 of 8 to start a “core” with.
But I have ZERO confidence that Uggla and Mac are going to provide consistent production next year.
Then factor in that next year the Nats won’t limit Strasburg? Yikes.
It was a good season that ended very poorly. Nothing new for us Braves fans. What do we usually say? We’ll get em next year? Sigh….
Last thought.
Thanks DOB and Carroll for all your hard work. I haven’t joined in as much this year due to not having time. But I read the blog everyday and still scroll for your posts and updates. Best sports blog in all of professional sports.
I suspect that Wren won’t sit on his hands this winter. He still has chips to make some bold moves if he wants. And one has to think that with Medlen now likely a rotation regular, Minor seemingly turning the corner, Gilmartin on the way and even if Beachy isn’t full strength until 2014… the rotation and backend of the bullpen should be set for a few years.
Time to make a bold move of some sort, outside of the box to shake things up. Might turn out worse. But now that Chipper and Bobby are gone, there isn’t any veterans other than Huddy to try and “win now” for. Time to decide if the young guys are part of the “now” plan or simply pieces to make the now plan. Or simply to sit back and let the young guys grow and see what unfolds next summer.
I’m not sure how much trust to put in Wren. But I feel pretty confident that he’s likely to make 1 maybe 2 “big” moves this winter. Just a gut feeling. But unfortunately my gut doesn’t feel so good right now after that performance.
To the abundantly uneducated fans, writers and players in Atlanta that abound everywhere. Let us classy St Louis Cardinal fans who don’t throw beer on opposing fans when they visit our stadium or run them out of the stadium so they can’t finish to watch the game they paid to attend or throw trash at players, umpires, opposing fans and the field when calls don’t go there way. That’s exactly how white trash six year olds behave.
First 100% of every umpire, umpire analyst, supervisor of officials and executive VP of MLB not only agree that the call was made 100% correctly but that how the call was made was done 100% correctly.
To educate the uneducated city further. The umpires in every baseball game for decades have made this call the exact same way this entire time (If anyone in Atlanta can afford the MLB baseball channel, I suggest you watch it as they have been happy to educate the city of Atlanta on their show tonight) They even showed examples of other games showing players traveling just as far as Kozma and umpires calling the play with the exact same timing as Mr. Holbrook.
As every umpire and analyst will explain, they wait until the ball reaches the apex (big word for you Atlanta) of it’s flight then look to see if the infielder (or even outfielder if it could ordinarily have been handled by an infielder) is underneath the ball to make an “ordinary” catch. MLB network showed that the ball landed exactly one step to the side of where Kozma the shortstop was standing.
Every umpire analyst (nearly all former mlb umpires) stated that this is always how they are instructed to call the infield fly rule and that is the exact order in how they are instructed to signal the call. The third base umpire confirmed Mr. Holbrooks call on the field as well. It is the left field umpires call as stated by the analysts, and made 100% correctly.
In the future, I suggest doing what the Cardinals always do. Like hitting when runners are in scoring position. And preventing the opposing team from scoring when they have runners in scoring position. It’s an amazing strategy that has worked really well for their 11 World Series titles in the past. This way you are not looking for the umpires to hand you the victory just because you are mentally petulant, white-trash 6 year olds.
I like other Cardinal fans have stated for years that the rule is stupid and should never be called that far away from the infield, even though it has ALWAYS been called that way. So should any of the Braves fans, writers or players taken the intelligent argument that it is a stupid rule despite the umpire accurately making the call, then that would have been highly understandable.
Instead the fans, writers, and players of Atlanta want to make the whiny, bitchy and stupid argument that the whole world is out to get them and please hand them the victory Mr. umpire because they can never earn it themselves. Brilliant!
Then they throw beer and trash at the umpires, players, Cardinal fans and the field because that’s exactly what 6 year white trash Atlanta losers do. Cardinal fans drenched in beer (yes I have Cardinal friends this happened to whom were attending the game and witnessed others in similar despair) are forced to leave the game in the 8th inning and the game is delayed for 20 minutes. Brilliant!
You have the undisputed title as the worst fans in baseball! Congratulations Atlanta you finally earned something!
he did not say we did not have the right to be angry, he was talking about the actions that anger caused. one can be angry without attacking others. hitting someone with a bottle is a crime, it is called assault and battery. Certainly we can not expect Braves officials to condone such crimes
This poster always tries to show off with big words and either misuses them, or does something else stupid in his writing. It is one of the funnier parts of his posting
but isnt it strange how the texas rangers are experiencing some of the same difficulties the braves experienced winning 2 pennants and no world series to show…
that is the norm, really. Very tough to repeat all the time which is what makes the run such a great event even with only one WS title. Look how loaded the Yanks were most of the first decade of this century and how little they actually accomplished
“……Say What ??!!! We should be angry John !!! Why not put a better team on the damn field ! I hope every paying fan sees this statement ! Its like we didnt have the right to be angry ! He and Wren needs to be FIRED !! …….” Dumbfound et. al.
Don’t you realize that the corporation doesn’t care how fans feel?
Good stuff N8. At Turner last night and just mixed emotions all the way around. Great crowd, great energy, and excited about seeing a playoff game with my 6 yr old. Reflecting after a couple of hours of sleep, it was pretty ugly display and unfortunate. Bad call aside, at end of day leaving 12 on base showed the true colors of what this Braves team really was about.
Been on record saying this lineup 1-8 was a huge mistake. Chipper great career, see you in the HOF. See you later. This guy unfortunately was put in a position to be counted on so much and at age 40, that was unfortunate. Nobody stepped up and have to rely on a singles hitter batting cleanup at a impact position in the lineup? Unfortunate. Goodbye Michael Bourn, enjoyed watching you play but not worth $. Uggla, wow. Love the attitude, hustle but he was a death sentence to this team. Unfortunate. So many question marks.
Ugly display last night in part to the overall frustration of our fans and altought totally diapprove of what transpired, certainly understand and feel it. LOTS of regular bloggers here that don’t live around the Atlanta metro area cannot relate to this. This is such a old story year after year and pent up frustration gave away to stupidity last night. Again unfortunate.
This was the year. NL not particularly strong but at the end of the day relying on a 40 year old to take you to the WS isn’t a formula for success. Don’t blame Chipper, shouldn’t have been in that position. Many didn’t step up and that’s why watching other teams again.
Have fun talking about the winter talks, who will be in the Starting rotation, traded, and needs for next season. I for one will be more productive with other events. Can’t wait to see the 6yr old in action later this morning. A nice breath of fresh air watching baseball being played for the love of the sport and people being civilized at least for a day.
Reflecting after a couple of hours of sleep, it was pretty ugly display and unfortunate. Bad call aside, at end of day leaving 12 on base showed the true colors of what this Braves team really was about.
True, in fact.
The “bad call” will be used as an excuse by some fans. That wasn’t the deal breaker for the Braves.
Leaving a dozen runners on base does point to the reason why Wren will place priority on upgrading the offense this – now – off-season.
The breaker was that the Braves, one the best defensive teams in the NL, made critical errors that cost them the game. Inexplicable, not withstanding Fredi’s statement that the Braves’ players were “excited” or somesuch.
The Braves won plenty of games this past season with strong pitching and defense. Medlen had the game in hand until Chipper’s rock. That error really turned the game’s dynamic.
Yeah, yeah, I hope he realizes they were throwing the bottles and cans and cups at him too, not just the umps. That was years and years of bottled up frustration. Years and years of being tired of being gentlemen and tipping their caps. Years and years of being proud of John and Bobby and Chipper, but also having mixed feelings because October is always the same. Errors. Bad umps. Great pitchers pitching mediocre. Lack of timely hitting. Years and years of being frustrated by John, Chipper, Bobby and the boys but not wanting to come off as ingrates because of all the great baseball they have given you for the past two decades.
One Atlanta professional sports title. The Hawks and Falcons getting blown out in the playoffs every year. The Braves always choking. And, yeah, it was uncharacteristic for the fans to conduct themselves like that, but it was in reaction to the Braves acting in a characteristically choking manner in October. They unleashed on the umps because as good fans they didn’t want on unleash what they were feeling watching another train wreck on their own players. If you protest on a blog, you’re written off as a crazy little blog ranter. If you protest on talk radio, you’re written off as a loon. If you protest by just not going to games anymore, you’re called a bad fan base. But if you protest the way they did last night, you’re scolded by Schuerholz. So, yeah, John, it was uncharacteristic. But maybe you need to ask yourself why what the fans were seeing was so characteristic of the teams you’ve built? But keep being a gentleman, John. Keep tipping that cap.
haha. Exactly. And your 1st paragraph at 6:45 says it all.
It’s funny because when I was watching the game I was cool. Wasn’t worked up over the errors, the RISP, the worst call in MLB history. Been there, done that through the years with this team. It wasn’t a few hours after the game when I saw MLB’s reaction and read the comments on Yahoo! that I became furious. Should’ve went out tonight and gotten away from it all.
Quite possibly one of the worst calls I’ve ever seen in my life in baseball, but the Braves still played like total crap and Fredi made a handful of head scratching calls during the game. Also not to argue enough to get thrown out of the game in the 8th inning really pissed me off. As far as the garbage throwing, I would have been throwing stuff too. If the Braves are gonna play like garbage and then have garbage umpire’s we might as well throw garbage on the field, cause it look like a F’N dump to me.
One thing I saw in Prado was the consistency. This team has always lacked it from a offensive standpoint, and through all the bantering, that was my main argument. Kelly put up great numbers, but they were a little too Dan Uggla-ish. I would take less stats for the consistency at the time. We need the consistency, the multi-hit games, the D, etc. Now Martin is like an Eddie Perez type guy. Love the guy.
Heck, I’d trade Uggla now for a guy that hits more evenly month-to-month. This team needs the ability to string together hits. We still don’t have that and that’s why we suck with RISP.

A few things…..
Braindead in Atlanta

We apologize to the St. Louis Cardinals and to Major League Baseball.”

So basically MLB is telling us to bend over and we’re like, Ok.

Basically, Braves fans acted last night just like how Schuerholz conducts himself when he deals with Boras or Furcal’s agent.

Yeah, clearly, you beat the living hell out of me in that KJ/Prado argument

haha.
