The Braves won’t get satisfaction, but the rule on the infield fly rule requires an immediate call, and since the third base umpire did not make the out call until after the ball landed on the grass in left field, then there is a legitimate basis for a protest. The earliest call requirement is essential to the rule itself as it allows the base runners to return to their original bases.

This game may be under protest. In my view, regardless of the chances, Fredi should protest the game.

Crew chief Jeff Kellogg was advised that Braves manager, Fredi Gonzalez, has put the game under protest. This will be very interesting because of the very tight schedule of postseason this year. I guess the game could be picked back up at this point tomorrow.

Fredi’s logic is that the failure to signal the infield fly out before the ball hit the ground is the justification for the protest, and for that reason, it might succeed.

First Wildcard Game

October 5th, 2012
8:06 pm

If there was ever an example of the stupidity of a one-game playoff to determine who gets into the division series, this game is that. I hated it when it was announced at the end of last year. I hated it as the concept gathered momentum. I hated it when it was officially implemented. I hated it when Atlanta was up 2-0. I hate it now.

This is the very first Wildcard game in MLB’s history. And it has been an absolute farce.

I’m disgusted by the effort of the team I watch 162 times a year. But I have enough objectivity that I can see that this concept–and this game–has been an unmitigated disaster.

Except for the TV networks.

GoNatsGo

This infield fly rule call makes up for the timeout called after Ross had struck out, which gave him a 4th strike and allowed him to hit that 2 run homer.
