More day games in Division Series; Braves set WC roster – updated

If the Braves advance to the Division Series, the first two games would be day games at Turner Field on Sunday (3:07 p.m.) and Monday (4:37 p.m.).

Major League Baseball announced starting times for division series games in both leagues through Tuesday. The Braves and Cardinals will play the National League Wild Card game today at Turner Field at 5:07 p.m., with the winner advancing to face the Washington Nationals in a Division Series.

The best-of-five division series for this year only will follow a 2-3 format, with home-field advantage translating to the final three games (if the series goes the full five) being played in Washington. In the future, baseball plans to go back to the 2-2-1 format and start the series in the city of the team with home-field advantage.

Roster watch

The Braves announced their 25-man roster for tonight’s game, which includes nine pitchers and 16 position players.

Pitchers include left-handers Luis Avilan, Eric O’Flaherty, Jonny Venters and Mike Minor, and right-handers Chad Durbin, Cory Gearrin, closer Craig Kimbrel, Tim Hudson and tonight’s starter Kris Medlen. Hudson would be the emergency starter, and Minor, another starter, is on the roster in case the game goes deep into extra innings. Hudson and Minor are expected to start the first two games of the division series if the Braves advance.

Among the relievers left off the roster were Peter Moylan and Cristhian Martinez.

“Carrying Medlen, and then two starting pitchers with Huddy and Minor, we felt like we had enough innings covered, knock on wood, in the back end of the game,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said.

Both will remain with the team and be in the dugout in uniform in case they are needed in the next round. Gonzalez said both Julio Teheran and Randall Delgado headed home to rest and re-group before pitching in winter ball in the Dominican Republic, starting Oct. 14.

Gonzalez said he chose Hinske’s experience over Francisco when it came to another left-handed bat off the bench. Francisco had been used only sparingly in recent weeks, going 3-for-26 with 15 strikeouts in the Braves past 34 games.

“With Hinske being a little (more) experienced in that spot, and having (Brian) McCann on the bench with the left‑handed bat kind of gave us that option of carrying Eric instead of Francisco,” Gonzalez said.

Outfielder Matt Diaz planned to rejoin the Braves in the dugout for Friday’s game. He has been away from the team in recent weeks recovering from season-ending thumb surgery. Ben Sheets, who was not in the Braves postseason plans, returned home to Louisiana to spend time with his children. Sheets, 34, announced earlier this week that his one-inning start on Wednesday against the Pirates would be his last before heading into retirement.

Selig is such a tool. Yes, I understand they want to put the Yankees in prime time, but 3:07 pm, really?

I guess it won’t matter since we will likely lose today anyways, but ridiculous nonetheless. Also this 1 game wild card, and new 2-3 format are completely idiotic.

This is nothing new for Atlanta. They’ve opened many Division Series games in the 4:00 hour, and in the 90’s, they often were the 1pm game when there were 3 games, at 1:00/4:30/8:00. When there’s only 2 playoff games, and a New York team is one of the teams, they go in prime time.

3 catchers because both Ross and McCann have battled injuries at various times this year – just being safe. No reason to carry 11 pitchers, so you carry an extra catcher and an extra position player.
Still balking at the fact that Francisco was left off – for Hinske, Baker, Overbay…??? What is Fredi’s love with Overbay? He’s done absolutely NOTHING since he’s been with the Braves. What did he have, 2 hits in all of September? Same with Baker….

Overbay over Fancisco? That decision by Fredi is a head scratcher. The bullpen and pitching decisions seem pretty sound and well thought out. The concept of having three catchers sound pretty good, considering both McCann and Ross have been battling injuries. Medlen has earned the confidence of Fredi and the team to get this start. He has the best run support of any other pitcher in the rotation, the team likes playing behind him when he pitches. I just hope the TEAM goes out and plays like there is no tomorrow till the end.

More Fredi logic — Hinske is experienced (so is David Justice and he could probably step in and give a better AB right now) but has some logic (2) Hinske over Francisco because McCann is lefthaanded and is also on the bench — Huh? I agree – if our Braves can survive today’s coin flip game, I believe they can go to the NLCS.

I believe they can beat the Nats in a 5-game series.
I think they can beat the Giants in a 7.
I am not so sure about beating the Reds in a 7.

Why is it that armchairs armed with nothing more than a morning paper seem to think themselves more qualified to run a baseball team than folks who are, you know, actually IN baseball? Fredi G will be in the running for manager of the year while the know-it-alls will be returning to their various hum-drum lives on Monday morning… I guess even crybabies need to create a semblance of self-esteem for themselves, as deluded as that might be…

But, Rick Camp did hit the HR.
So that shows, almost anything can happen in baseball.

Francisco should have been chosen over Hinske.. Only glaring omission that I see, although Gearin was chosen over Moylan- so there goes the experience argument.

Wonder whats up with Sheets going home instead of hanging out with the team given his leadership.

Nice work Braves. Good job Freddie. Win it and you shut a lot of people up, including me. As a lifelong Braves fan this is the worst part of the season. I can’t shut out the doubt. Our only World Series was the year I renounced baseball because of the strike, then it was Charley Liebrandt in relief of a close game, Jim Leyritz, the extra inning Houston game, the Marlins…No wonder it is tough to find hope.

U no the Braves will blow this game for tree reasons

1) They hire a loosing managar with a loosing recod.
2) Shelfish Chipper is still on the rooster
3) Drunky Hanson is still on the rooster.

Well if they get that deep into the bench players, it is probably not a good sign. Using all those bench players would indicate a lot of pitching changes or a long extra inning game. I only wanna see 1 maybe 2 non-starters enter the game. EOF in the 8th if needed. Kimbrel in the 9th if needed.

Billy Beaneater – I know it is tough to banish the doubt and difficult to maintain hope. But, if Rick Camp can hit a home run, the Braves can surely win today.

hey Loosing Managar = Loosing Record. you have no clue what you’re talking about. what the hell is a loosing managar? and a rooster? figure out how to spell and then you can come on the board and talk. do you just like to double up the “Os” trying to start a tomahawk chop in here? cause we can ooooooo o oooooooo, oooo ooooooooo GO BRAVES

And he used “rooster” twice on separate lines. So it is not an accidental double keystroke.

Why not Ben sheets over Minor or Gearrin? Unless Sheets is still injured whom would you rather have face a Matt holiday or any of the other Cardinal right handers,Sheets or Gearrin? It’s only one game and Sheets showed me his arm is ready. Strange and not very loyal treatment to a guy who reenergized the braves for a couple of weeks at critical time. Sheets struck out McCuthcheon swinging on a mid nineties stuff. I agree with Chipper that you need that skill level in playoff baseball.

Sad to hear about Sheets. Guess I missed that announcement. Glad he got to contribute this year.

And they will blow the game for “tree” reasons. Not “bush” or “flower” reasons. I could see blowing a game for “tree” reasons in the spring when the hardwoods are filling the air with pollen though.

What is Chipper talking about? wouldn’t the shadows be gone by 6 o’clock at this time of year. The shadows might cause problems in the early innings but not after about the third or fourth. Should be much more a problem on Sunday.

Just thought I would be the first Cardinal Fan to come on here and gloat about our pending victory.
It will be a piece of cake winning in that library of a field known as Turner Field. Your fans are lame, passionateness, and will be without a team in the post season in a few hours. Too bad you guys dont holler as loud at the Braves games, as you do at them Tractor Pulls, Monster Truck Rallies, and Thuga Games.. Go Cardinals!!!

CyberNerd Fans do not win games, its 40 minutes to first pitch and all the Braves “Fans” are on their computers instead of the ball park.. So typical of the weakest sport city around. We could pitch 76 year old Bob Gibson, and he would still shut down your punchless lineup.

Go Cards!

michael, I would trust Mike Minor against just about anyone right now. He was among the best pitchers in baseball post AS break. But he’s only there for some insurance if they need some long relief (really only likely if there are extra innings).

Loosing Manager, Hanson is not on the “rooster” for today and probably won’t be period this poste season even if the Braves make it to the NLDS.

Cardinal Charlie, the game is completely sold out. Oh and Lohse really shut down our lineup earlier this year right?

Makes sense to me. I like Juan within reason (the most power on the team), but his pinch hit ABs are pretty bad. His start games are where he seems turn in better somewhat ABs.

Shame, shame, shame Atlanta fans. You exhibited every stereotype of southern redneck behavior. Throwing you beer cans on the field; no security walking out the perpetrators out of the stadium. Let me tell you about class. . . Milgel Cabrerra won the triple crown in Kansas City this week against our hapless Royals and was given a standing ovation by the 30,000 Royals fans including a curtain call coming back out of the dugout to acknowledge the ovation. Don’t you guys ever grow up?

Errors & Errors I do not blame the fans.Very potential costly error.Instead of bases loaded,no advancement, and batter out. That ump should move to football as Ref.Great year Braves. Thanks Chipper.
