“So glad to see Chipper go out on a sour note. This is the guy who cheated on his wife and had a baby with someone else. Can’t stand the guy. Go Cards!!”

Yeah, perhaps a bit of karma happening. Many fans find a way to sweep this stuff under the rug, but it doesn’t go ignored by all.

The infield fly rule is stated: “as long as your p-n-s is longer than Joe Simpson’s and you hold your glove up in the air, it’s in effect”, Why is everyone so mad? I don’t comment much, but I know y’all like that one.

it was a good call,
and MLB stood behind a good call.
Atleast the trash throwing braves fans will have something to whine about for the next 6 months
what if, if being a very big word.
Word has it the umps though about changing the call until the braves trashed the field.
then rightly said they do not deserve to win!

To the so-called “GT and Braves Fan”. Get a life. Now you blame this on first the media, then political parties and then unions. You give Tech a bad name. The fans were classless; the Braves deserved to lose; it’s just a game. Mistakes will be made. People aren’t perfect; why is it so necessary that the game be fair. This is why soccer (real football) is the superior sport. Fans bitch about calls, but in the long run the game is won or lost; the season is won or lost during the run of play.

Infield fly call = BAD
Braves defense = WORSE
Fan reaction = WORST

I love the Braves like they’re my family, but throwing beer bottles on the field after a bad call was absolutely the worst thing that could have happened. Not easy explaining that to my kids. I was embarrassed too for all Braves’ fans and for my city. Joe Simpson calls it like it is, and that’s why he’s a good commentator.

Wrong. They were using 6 umpires in the World Series in the 1940’s. The Umpires Union wasn’t formed until 1970.

I’m a Nats fan, but wanted to take a moment to congratulate the Braves team on a tremendous season. I’m sure it sucks to have your team lose, but I’m envious of all the years your team has reached the post-season. Losing in the playoffs sucks, but at least you’re regulars. The last six to eight weeks have been pretty nerve racking for us in DC. It’s surprising to read so much negativity from the fans — you’ve got 94 wins after all. See you next Spring.

Not Wren’s fault, not Fredi’s fault, not even Holbrook’s fault (despite how angry I am about a guy with poor judgment getting paid to make judgment calls–tonight, Greinke, McGwire, etc.). Chipper is finally gone (a “winner”, but only once a champion). Uggla is strictly “you get what you pay for”. McCann has always been a DH who plays for an NL team. On any AL team he’d be a fantastic DH who could catch in a pinch. In the NL he’s a liability, especially if he ain’t hitting like an All-Star. The Braves will have a TON of money to spend next year. Here’s hoping they (for once) spend it wisely.

No game is called perfectly. According to the strike zone chart on tv, Medlin threw about 20 pitches more due to strikes being called balls. He had at least 3 more batters struck out but the homeplate ump called balls instead of stikes. Would have been the difference of the game if the homeplate ump had been perfect or if some kind of replay or computer had been used to call balls and strikes.

An ump = mistakes. Sad but true.

Come on AJC, call it like it is. The photo caption says “Chipper hustles”. No he didn’t, he got lucky because he slowed down several feet before he got to first on that final at bat. If he had ran through the bag like we are taught, he would have been safe by a long shot. He gave up on it and assumed he was out. Not a good example. BTW, the entire infield made errors tonight, except for Freeman at first, including the pitcher(Venters). It was a bad call by the umpire by the game was already lost before that. Sad display of major league baseball. Makes it easy now to switch over to the Oakland A’s, so thanks Braves!

Braves need to get over the BC days and get some new blood from other organizations.
Always love Chipper but he was a big disappointment as he played like he didn’t wont to be there.
Uggla I hope will be gone..for ball bag.

One of the main reasons I don’t care for professional baseball any
longer is all of this wild card nonsense. A sudden death playoff with
the fifth best team making the playoffs ?? Give me a break, please.
If you have to have a four team playoff, take the four teams with the
best damn records. Otherwise, just make it like high school basketball.
Every team goes into the tourney, then maybe the Astros get hot and
win it all.

Losing like this would be unacceptable in any circumstance, but for the umpires to enforce a ruling that is clearly wrong no matter what the rules book says. What they did is WRONG and I can prove it……right here, right now.

Had this been game seven of the world series…….the umpires would reverse the call and call it an error and the runner would be safe.

MLB has hurt it’s product with this idiotic playoff system worse than the 1994 strike. Texas is about to be eliminated too. Two single games in one day lose two major markets. Couple that with Umps on the take and ticket and cable prices out of control. They will lose lots of fans. The trash on the field is a sign of frustration with the paying MLB fans. And we have to listen to pompous goofs like Joe Simpson as well? I have been a fan forty years. I am taking break from this crooked sport. Steroids, monopolies, crooked umps. Forget it.

Bill, do you really have a clue. An outfielder can be involved with the in-field fly rule (2.00). The umpire can not call it until the ball begins to return to the ground, after reaching its highest point. Therefore, the umpire can not call it, until he determines that the ball is returning, and that the fielder (who can be an outfielder) made ordinary effort. The umpire judged there was a point of ordinary effort. He called it, as soon as he could. You can not call an IFR until ordinary effort and apex has been established. So, let me ask. Do YOU know the rule, or are you just so mad, you can’t think straight?

Hicks Hayseed

The only way to put an end to Bud Selig’s horse-bull is to alleviate MLB’s anti-trust exemption! It’s truly the only thing they fear! Do away with divisions, restore the balanced schedule (it will be difficult with two 15-team leagues, but not impossible given interleague play), and let the top 4 teams in each league make the playoffs. 1 and 3 play in the first round, as do 2 and 4. The winners advance, etc. Plenty of money and fun to go around, but not as much as chaotic gambling situations like having a clearly inferior 5th place team defeat a clearly superior 4th place team (that would have been a champion in some of the other divisions). In the current scenario, the Detroit Tigers have won their division and have home-field advantage in the first round, yet have the SEVENTH best record in the American League). Absurd!

CA – if you were actually watching this game you would have noticed that the infielder never was established and the umpire waited until the ball was about to hit ground to make the call, which is far closer to the ground than at the apex of its return.

There is no way that an umpire can blow a call that bad unless there is a payout involved. A little league ump doesn’t blow a call that bad…this ump will probably get a suspension and knew he would bear the wrath of fans and the league office before he made the call. Months or years later you may hear of a payment to a Swiss or Cayman bank on the behalf of this ump…maybe not the mob is pretty good….all of the umps at this game should get a suspension for not overturning the call…We don’t need additional umps to make horrible calls ..4 is plenty…The league office(Torre) wouldn’t have overturned that call if the ball had landed on the warning track…it’s all about the money …go ahead and put Rose and shoeless Joe in the hall of fame…MLB has no shame

Freddie Gonzalez is a gutless coward. The umps intimidate him and it shows. How he can remain in the dug out after that call??? He is the only manager who would be there. Every other manager in MLB would have made the umpires kick them out.

For the Braves, City of Atlanta and MLB security to treat this game like a regular season game is a joke. MLB manipulated the playoff games to cause tension of a game 7 situation. They did not have the security to match a game 7 situation. Thank god this happened in Atlanta. Anywhere else a riot would have occurred and people would be dead. Hey Braves watch Orioles havent been in playoffs since 1997 and they will not choke. The umps didnt cost us this game it was are defense. Theres no doubt in my mind if Simmons wasnt out McCann would of most likely hit in double play because we cant hit with runners in scoring position.Im with most the hell with Bourn with two strikes on him you know a strike out is coming.Go A”S and O”S. OH FIRE FREDI
