Terrible call but we lost this game because of errors by chipper, simmons (twice)counting his boneheaded baserunning and uggla. Uggla and Bourn are useless.Mac needs to go and take Bourn and Uggla with him.l
The fan reaction should show how bad of a call this is. This isn’t Philly or some other city where those types of things happen frequently. Honestly how many times in the past 20-30 years do you remember seeing something like this in Atlanta? That alone should show how horrible of a call this was, it was the worse call I have ever seen, it wasn’t a bang/bang just a terrible absolutely terrible inforcement (or lack there of) of the rule.
Braves choked again. Pitching was decent. Got twelve hits. Our defense was horrible. I cant stand the heartache that the Braves give me. Post season just never pans out. Still a life long Braves fan but this hurts. Umps call was horrible. But the game turned when Chipper threw it into left field. Potential double play ball. Personnaly i think if they turn two there it settles Med-dog down and braves cruise but this is the so-called playoffs.Braves just cant seem to get over the hump. Id rather not make it to playoffs than lose like this. Any cities fans would have littered the field, so dont feel bad Atlanta. Whatever. Its football season.

Wow, all the Bizarros are on this blog tonight. And why do people feel they need to send the same message countless times??
OK, this game was lost by bad throwing errors, timely (but very little) hitting by St. Louis, and no clutcch hitting by Atlanta.
As far as the OUTfield fly rule call….yeah, one of the worst calls ever. But, my question is why didn’t the home plate umpire simply overrule the LF line ump? It was obviously wrong to everyone except the moron who made the initial call. Fredi should’ve taken the HP ump to watch the replay – easy one to overturn.

We’re both old men, and he said, and i agreed, that’s the worst call we’ve ever seen. That’s how bad that call was folks. You’ll be hearing about this the rest of your lives.

The game is over. Forget about what happened on the field. Don’t forget that the fans acted like a bunch of spoiled children. Some Braves Fans owes all of baseball an apogily for their needless actions.
I was born and raised in Missouri and was a diehard Cardinal Fan. Later in life I moved to Atlanta and became a Braves supported. For the last 50 years I have lived about halfway between StL and Atl. I root for both. Yes, tonight I was rooting for both teams. At 75-years old, you can do that.

Braves= biggest chokers in sports history. 1 title in 14 tries, then last year, now this. Could they have kicked the ball around and thrown it into the stands any worse???? CHOKE!!!
And bases loaded with 1 out isn’t that different from 2nd and 3rd (and then bases loaded) with 2 out. They still needed a hit that they NEVER WOULD HAVE GOTTEN ANYWAY, so BFD!!!

Massive hemorrhoids for Matt Holliday and a GIANT BOIL on Adam Wainwright’s pitching hand.
And I hope Anheiser Busch gets bought out by a bunch of Brazillians or, worse, Belgians. Huh? Oh, already happened.
Things will change in Atlanta when fans stand up and hit MLB where it counts… In the pocketbook. Turn off the playoffs. Don’t watch the playoffs on TV.
Time to cut the mustard and get some gamers, like the the Cardinals. The laid back Chippers have caused us to become a bunch of laid back losers. Sad, very, very sad. And a long time coming…. Errors, errors, errors!
Terrible call by the ump, atrocious behavior by the fans, and a Braves team that played like…..well the Braves. Not one hit with RISP, 7 left stranded in final 3 innings, and saving their worst defense for a do-or-die game. 25 out of 29 ESPN sportswriters picked Atlanta to win tonight; Have they actually seen any Braves games this year?
An obvious gaffe by Holbrook and shame on the other umps for not overruling him and getting the call right. I guess he will be driving up the umemployment rate soon. What a joke of a call, especially in the post season. Shame on MLB!! Atlanta fans showing emotion ??
Good for them. If you don’t like it – don’t sell $7.50 beers at the game, hypocrites!!
The reality is the Braves have been MLB worst in batting with RISP and #1 in stranding base-runners, especially with 2 out. Tonite, Cards got 2-5 (.400) with RISP and the Braves go (1-8) .125 and strand 12 runners.
I liked the fight I saw, and that gives us some hope for 2013. We’ve got to do more baseball (steals, bunts and hit-and-runs) to score more runs with < 2 outs. Bobby Ball got us again in the post-season.
I really think that Bud Selig has destroyed baseball the way he has run the game the past couple of decades. Nothing more than a puppet for the owners. Seriously a 1-game playoff after the Braves finished 4 games ahead of St. Louis? Absolutely bogus. Should have been a best 3 out of 5 series.
No instant replay? What a joke. Letting the Yankees buy their way into the playoffs every year? That revenue sharing in baseball is working out real well. Baseball is going into the toilet like every other sport. Too much player turnover, prices are too high. I used to enjoy baseball but I can’t watch it anymore.
Okay, the Braves have let us down again. Two major league (no pun intended) errors by two of the highest paid members of the roster.
Can the Braves PLEASE take the money from Chipper and Uggla’s contracts and get some competent infielders? When we trade McCann(N’t) can we get some young, powerful offensive players?
Good grief! What does it take for this club to find some young, talented hitters who can also catch the freakin’ ball?
BTW, kudos to FG for benching McCann tonight. Ross was a ‘hoss’ at the plate tonight.
You all will see the red birds winning the ring again (I say you will, because I won’t see anymore this sold out maffia playoffs)…that ump and his collages were sold tonight…and maybe chip too!…yes maybe hgip careless jones too!!….I’am oficially retired of been a braves fan, I’m tired of this common chokes playoffs performances over and over again.
Folks, the Cards’ shortstop gave up on the play and immediately looked at Holliday (left fielder). It is therefore clear that the shortstop heard a voice yell, and I am sure he thought it was Holliday calling him off. However, Holliday had given up on the play and got out of the shortstop’s way. So, the voice heard yelliing was the left field umpire.
Without that happening, would the shortstop had caught the ball? Entirely possible.
The fact also that the shortstop pulled off on the play concurrently with the left field umpires’ out call, seems to confirm what happened. This being the case, it could be argued that the Braves derived some benefit from the brutal call in that failure to catch the ball allowed Uggla and Ross to advance to third and second base.
BTW: I normally would never inject politics into this blog, but good grief, the Obama latest attack ad is just too much!
Hey, no whining about a screwy infield fly call; you can’t commit three errors and have any hope of winning against a team of professional ballplayers, especially in a game with stakes like this one. There’s enough evidence in the books to safely say that the Atlanta Braves cannot play big boy baseball. They simply just cannot do it. The Cardinals know how, though. Pathetic.
Man, some people down here are so stupid. I can’t believe anyone would have the audacity to bring Obama into this. I guess there are so many stupid people down here brainwashed and manipulated by FOX Noise into voting against their own economic interests. Disgraceful and sad.
The Braves defense lost the game plain and simple… HOWEVER,
That was the worst call ever. I couldn’t believe Joe Simpson was saying that crap. He should resign immediately. Yes it was classless what the fans did but plain and simple they were right.
MLB can go to H$LL I will not watch any of the postseason for darn sure. The greedy players and the UMPS thinking they are god in MLB has me so disgusted with my used to be favorite sport. The fact that six guys couldn’t come together and make the play right is just a disgrace.
The fact it was called right before the ball hit the ground makes it even worse that never happens.
I agree with all of the discussion regarding Joe Simpson, he should be out of here as the Braves announcer after dissing our fans. Not only do I agree with the reaction, I was proud to see the passion of our fans!
I would have been there doing the exact same thing if the game wasn’t sold out except for SRO tickets by Monday, instead, I bought tickets for my family for Sunday’s game. What a disappointment for all of us to not be able to see Chipper play again.
Did anyone really think the “choke Braves” were gonna win this game????
Same old song again…they simply aren’t in the same league as the other playoff teams.
Oh well…college football!!!
The call was pathetic, but that’s not what lost them the game. Giving up 4 runs due to 3 errors, and leaving umpteen men on base (as usual), is why the Braves lost. By comparison, as of the 8th, the Cards had left only 1 MAN on base!
Braves were uninspiring all season – this one game season-ending fart was an appropriate finish. The humongous beer slinging debacle was the Braves fans getting 10 years of frustration out of their system and it’s the first sign of passion I’ve seen at a Braves game in years – Bravo!!!
The Braves lost this game with uncharacteristic horrible defense! Kris Medlen deserved a better outcome, anyone who thinks he should not have started is insane and has not been watching the Braves this season! Stop blaming Fredi, the players lost this game. The infield fly ruling was one of the worst calls ever and should have been overruled by the head umpire, screw Joe Simpson, the fans had every right to express their displeasure! This new wildcard format is a joke! 94 win season over after 1 bad game…disgraceful! I wont watch another game this season.
I’m a Nats fan and I always love to take my kids to the games when the Braves come to DC since the visiting fans are so good-natured — unlike Philly fans. I was actually rooting for an extra-innings game to wear out the pitchers. However, it’s a shame that a one-game playoff is marred by one of the worst calls I’ve ever seen. The Braves also didn’t do themselves any favors with the errors but the umps really made an outrageous call.
Joe Torre is heading up the post-game presser and it looks like the decision has been made by Joe Torre to disallow the protest because Torre is deeming that it is a judgement call.
So, Torre has officially disallowed the protest already, and it is his call to make. So, the game is official and the Cards win.
I, too, am glad the fans threw stuff. Wish they had rioted. This crud is not addressed without civil disobedience. Bring OWS and the Muslim Spring to MLB !
David, I’m surprised you didn’t call out the home plate umpires mistake of granting a timeout even though Loshe had already started his motion. That should have been a strikeout thus negating the homerun. I’m sure it was an oversight on your part.
Glad to see Larry go! Overhyped! Just like the Mets series years ago. Choked when we needed him. Such a choker! Hope Ugly , Burger King, and Bourn are all gone after this year! Nice clutch hitting michae1
the sad true it’s that: After all Chipper Jones was only a good player in REGULAR SEASON ,, then sucks in playoff games… please tell me except the 2 homeruns vs Colorado in the division series in 1995 please tell me another awesome performance in playoffs by Jones???
NO was uggla or mccann ,,,WAS OUR “HERO” who throws this game to the garbage ( WITH UMPIRES HELP) ……
FREDI GONZALEZ MANAGED TERRIFIC THIS GAME,,,IT’S NOT HIS FAULT
Situational hitting is a BIG part of baseball. Errors aside, the Braves had a chance to even the score had the right call had been made! This play was an error by St. Louis that could have been just as much of a swing play in the game as Chipper’s throwing error! The situation for the next hitter had a bigger impact! They were able to pitch around McCann as a result of the call. I told my son that I would walk McCann and face the next hitter. I coach High level Travel baseball 16-18U and this would be a gift to me as a coach! I would have walked the dangerous hitter and get out of the inning every single time! That’s what they did, inning over! Good coaching from the Cards to bring in the closer during the break. Braves got the shaft! MLB has a big problem on their hands! This call killed a probable game changing inning.
Sad for the Braves especially Chipper … they deserved better than this disgraceful ending.
I bet MLB over-reacts to this fiasco by either putting replay on everything (slowing the game down even more) or expanding the wild card play in to a best of 5 series.
The one thing I like about the play-in format is that it restored some importance to winning your division. Teams than sneak in as wild cards shouldn’t get to play a division winner in a best of 5.
My personal view remains that it was a brutally bad call to make given that there was no chance for the Cards to make a double play.
It was also just announced that Frank Wren withdrew the protest. That is very interesting since the GM pulled the protest and not the manager, which is the normal outcome.
Thanks Atlanta for making a stand on a terrible call. I don’t care that we lost as long as we made a stand, Go FANS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hate winning a game just as much as losing a game based on a umpire’s call. What a bummer tonights game turned out to be. Poor defense but when the third baseline umpire made that late infield fly call what a disaster. Two umpires are added to hopefully get more calls right. WRONG!!!!!!
The more I watch baseball bad calls the more I HATE the game.
Baseball has taken the wind out of my sails. Loved the smell of grass cut on diamonds.
The smell of the leather of gloves. Popcorn in the stadiums. What a wonderful game ruined by poor umpiring.
I’m glad the Braves fans finally are showing some emotion—-they have been too laid back for years.
Horrible call—-I would have liked to have seen McCann up with the bases loaded. Then, Mott couldn’t have pitched around him. And the Braves get that OUT back and extend the inning.
Well, let’s see…. USA blows the Ryder Cup. Braves blow the playoff, and Murray will probably give it away in Columbia. Not a good sports week for this old Dawg! However, maybe we will prevail in Columbia. Jackets have owned Climpson as of late, so maybe a double dip for the State of Ga after all? Stranger things have happened before!
I have been a Braves fan since 1967….this one hurts almost as much as Game 7 of the 91 World Series, but we have a good young team and bad calls are part of the game….St Louis had their own in the 1985 World Series against the Royals and that cost them a World Championship. St Louis is a class town and great organization….good luck against the Nats
Bad defense can’t hit with men in scoring position, and a history of choking, case closed!!!!!So long Chipper, good player but no hall of famer never did anything in post season games that stands out, and he played in alot!!!!!!!

How many times have you seen bases loaded with no our end with no runs being scored? No one knows what could have happened. The Braves could have gone on and scored 12. It was sad to see the team lose, for their sake and the young fans. The pathetic fans who threw the trash basically stated, “Hey, kids, we don’t care what kind of role models we are. We don’t care about you.” You did a great job, participants, of putting on a show. If you don’t like it, too bad. You ruined it, and probably scared, many of the young fans. You are classless, and good for you for losing. You deserve it.
Obviously, the key to putting together a good team is to emphasize really bad grooming….some of those Cardinals players have the worst looking beards I’ve ever seen. Now Freeman is on his way for us in that department, and Hanson too…so apparently there is hope.
I’m not surprised at all about the loss. Has come to be the norm in the playoffs for the Braves. Yeah it was a horrible call but would’ve lost to NATS anyway.

Pathetic.

The call was pathetic, but that’s not what lost them the game. Giving up 4 runs due to 3 errors, and leaving umpteen men on base (as usual), is why the Braves lost. By comparison, as of the 8th, the Cards had left only 1 MAN on base!
