MLB Network’s Al Leiter has advice for Kris Medlen

In 1999, Al Leiter threw a two-hit shutout for the Mets in a one-game playoff to decide the Wild Card against the Reds. He spoke about the Braves-Cardinals game with AJC staff writer Carroll Rogers.

Q. What advice do you have for Braves starter Kris Medlen?

A. “What helped me it was after years of a lot of understanding of what a pitcher’s job was. Harvey Dorfman got my mind where it needed to be. That’s the whole part of superior athletes that are able to separate what the emotions are and what the elevated anxiety will be to being able to focus at the task at hand. And having pitched in a game like that and I also started a Game 7, which is essentially a one-game playoff when the loser goes home, is to think about this pitch, this moment. Execution of a quality pitch consecutively. Exploit a hitter’s weakness. Don’t allow the exterior distractions to come into that. Repeat a consistent delivery and make quality pitches. It sounds cliché. It sounds kind of textbook, but it really is what a pitcher is trying to do.”

Q. How would you feel if you were on the Braves, the team wins 94 games but your ability to advance in the postseason comes down to one-game playoff?

A. “The reality is going into spring training, everybody knew that there was going to be this wild-card change. I think the reality from the Major League Baseball perspective, not the city of the wild-card winner, is that this has been very exciting. It’s not only added two more playoff teams, it’s added more fan bases to be excited about the prospect of their team making the wild-card round. I think overall if you look macro, instead of micro, it’s good for the game.”

Q. What works in the Braves’ favor in this game?

A. “What I really like about what Atlanta has done, Fredi [Gonzalez] has been able to keep his bullpen go-to arms fresh or more fres … I think the Braves are as good as anybody in the National League relief-wise. And I think the young players coming together: [Jason] Heyward what he was able to do after a Year 2 of injuries and scuffling. I love Freddie Freeman. I think the team is riding the mojo of Chipper [Jones]. I think there are a lot of reasons to like them starting with Medlen. I think Timmy Hudson is such a pro and such a class act. And [they have] a great bullpen.”

Al Leiter is a former two-time MLB All-Star pitcher and current MLB Network analyst. MLB Network’s ‘MLB Tonight’ will air live before and after every postseason game. MLB Network will exclusively air two League Division Series games on Oct. 7 and 10.

Why can’t we play at a more normal time? Games at 5 aren’t so promising. It’s at the dinner hour.

Agreed. This is NOT good for baseball. It is completely stupid to make a team that won the wild card by 6 games play a one game crap shoot. MLB executives must have been on a drinking binge when they came up with this. I might can see that if you won by one game maybe a playoff but not if you won by at least 5 games.

Blame MLB and the networks for the game times… MLB let the MLB network who is televising the game choose the Rangers-Orioles game which will play sometime after 8PM. That left Atlanta-Cards game with the crappy 5PM start time… AVOID downtown Atlanta after 12 noon tomorrow…

MLB took the best of both worlds– added two more teams to the playoff chase and they can penalize the wild card teams for not winning their divisions by having them spend their number one pitcher against another wild card team and use their number 2 against the division winner’s number one pitcher.

The irony is the AL wild card game would have been the same last year, since the two teams tied and would have to play it off anyway. But in the NL, it’s a joke. It’s the first time in MLB history that two teams without identical records are playing in a one game playoff. AS it turns out, the Braves are the only MLB team of 30 that was adversely affected by Bud Selig’s idiocy.

Terrible time for a game! If not mistaken, JHey had trouble with balls in the sun on one of these late afternoon games. Heard FG would have a workout at 1PM today, so why not at 5PM and hit lots of flyballs to JH? Of course that would take some common sense and logic and we can rule that out for FG.

Don’t mind the Wild Card Playoff, but hate the one-game aspect of it. At least give us a three-game series. One game following 162 to determine your playoff future seems wrong.

Would this extra wild-card be a joke if it was in place last year? The Braves would have played the Cards in STL last year if it was in place and I think we can all agree that would have been better than sitting at home until Spring Training. I think it should be a 3 game series…not a 1 game play-in.

I don’t like the play in game; yet, I am thrilled the Braves won 94 games and still have a shot. Sept. 2011 has been purged.

I hope Medlen stays hot—he is the key because we know we can’t count on this offense. It would be great to see them advance and keep Chipper’s career going a little longer. We have the pitching to keep advancing, but need some luck tomorrow and for Medlen to be strong to see that happen.

I’m in for a 3 game wild card series. This one and done stuff won’t really show who the better team is, just who happened to win the proverbial coin toss that day.

Guy’s you must be aggressive, both hitting, running, and attitude in order to win…If you play typical Braves bb, man on, then look for a homer, you WILL lose!! mark it down now. However, getting on base by hook, crook, or means, and then playing small ball while being aggressive, will put more pressure on the Cards, and offer an opportunity to do somethg missing against an upper level team this year….simply put…a win for the Braves. Again, waiting for the tater, will leave you floundering in the oil and burned!!!

Take a lession from the Falcons, be bold, be aggressive and show your teeth!

If we lose this game, Chipper should walk out to the middle of the diamond as the Cardinals celebrate on our field, drop trow, and coil up a big turd on the grass.

I would anyway. Thanks for listening.

If the Cards win, they’d better not pretend to “honor” Chipper’s last game on the field. After Wainwright’s comments, I don’t think that team has earned the right to make itself look good by tipping their caps in mid-celebration.

I don’t think the Braves (nor the Red Sox) deserved an extra game last year. I’m not a fan of the play-in game, either.

Braves gotta come out and play the first inning like it’s the 9th and down by a run.Clawing and scratching the whole game will yield results…

a mysterious power outage localized to the visiting clubhouse wouldn’t hurt either:)
