Game preview and fan information for Cardinals-Braves

NL Wild Card game: Cardinals at Braves

When: 5:07 p.m. Friday (first pitch)

TV; radio: TBS; 680, 93.7, 100.5

Starting pitchers: Cardinals RH Kyle Lohse (16-3, 2.86 ERA) vs. RH Kris Medlen (10-1, 1.57)

About Lohse: One of the few games that Lohse was not on top of his game was May 30 at Turner Field when Brian McCann and Freddie Freeman both hit first-inning home runs in a 10-7 Braves victory.

About Medlen: In his past 10 starts, Medlen has given up only seven earned runs, three of those in one game against the Marlins on Sept. 25. His only previous appearance this season when he gave up as many as three earned runs was May 2 against the Philadelphia Phillies, a wild 15-13 Braves victory.

Sidelights: Two-time Grammy award winner and Marietta native Travis Tritt will sing the national anthem. Atlanta Opera singer Timothy Miller will perform ‘God Bless America’ during the seventh-inning stretch.

Choptober: The first 45,000 fans will receive a foam tomahawk.

Fan information: Ticket windows will open at 8:30 a.m. to purchase or pick up pre-purchased tickets in advance and will remain open until the end of the sixth inning. Standing room only tickets ($18 each) are available. Single-game suite tickets are available for $100 each (includes a $25 food and beverage credit added to ticket). Fans are strongly encouraged to arrive early. Parking lots will open five hours before the first pitch and the gates will open three hours before the first pitch.

Parking: Official parking lots for Turner Field are at capacity for the game. Those that haven’t pre-purchased parking are strongly encouraged to take MARTA. The MARTA Braves shuttle begins its run 90 minutes before the first pitch from the Underground Atlanta/Five Points MARTA station to Turner Field until one hour after the final out. For those fans who may want to arrive at the ballpark before the MARTA Braves shuttle begins its game operation MARTA recommends catching any one of three other available bus routes – the No. 32, the No. 49 or the No. 55. All three bus lines may be caught at the Five Points MARTA station and all three routes stop at points near Turner Field.

For the NLDS: A Braves victory Friday means they will host the first two games of the National League Division Series on Sunday and Monday. For guaranteed seats to the home games in the series against the Washington Nationals, fans are encouraged to purchase postseason strips by calling 404-577-9100. Single game tickets are available by visiting: www.braves.com/postseason.

BUYER BEWARE on the strips. Just called, and if you are not a season ticket holder, or flex-plan ticket holder, you have to pay, on top of the cost of the tickets, a $500.00 per seat deposit to go toward seats for games NEXT YEAR. In essence, you have to pay an extra $1,000.00 for a pair of post-season tickets in a gimmick to sign you up for seats next year. Shady Shady!

Could not have picked a worse starting time if they had tried. Would bet that TBS let MLB influence this decision. Can’t tell me that the Orioles-Rangers deserve prime time more than Braves-Cards. Cards won WS last year and have a huge following and we all know the Braves have a national audience. Why has this not been questioned by the AJC writers?

Really looking forward to this game. I only wish there was a best of three series to decide the true NL wildcard. Even the Houston Astros could beat any team on a given day. A short series would ensure the best team reaches the next step of post-season play by eliminating chance. Go birds!

I just hope the Braves’ offense shows up for this one. We are all well aware of how the Braves tend to lay an egg in high-pressure situations. I’m praying that’s not the case this time around. Go Braves!!!

Well I WAS planning to go before they announced the ludicrous 5 p.m. start time. Some of us have jobs, you know! With Atlanta traffic and having to take MARTA I’d have to leave work by at least 3, which just ain’t happening. Guess I’ll listen to it in the car on the way home and catch the ending from my couch. Freaking MLB always let’s TV ruin the playoffs. Oh well. GO BRAVES!

If we win the World Series, this crazy city better agree to build a MARTA spur to the park….its nuts…

McClain, understand and feel for ya! Think maybe though all the blame lies with MLB. They are getting as bad as ESPN in their promotion of the AL. Anyone in sports at TBS would know better than to go with a 5PM start time for ATL. Think MLB probably twisted their arms at TBS. You can’t tell me that there is a bigger following for Orioles-Rangers than Braves-Cards! They could not have picked a worse start time than 5PM. That sun will give the RF’s fits at that time of day. It already screwed with Jason Heyward this year. If the Braves are smart they will be out there today doing some fielding between 5-6PM to see just where the sun is. Not sure that will happen as we all know who the “skipper” is.

Hopefully, the players will adjust to the 5:00 pm time slot better than some of the fans. It’s the same for both teams.

One game playoff is bad idea which will be changed next year hopefully shortening season to accomodate three game series. Rush hour won’t be a problem. Everyone will be in parking lot or at home like me ;@)

Folks, you already have a MARTA spur to the stadium — it’s called the bus link from one of the nearby train stations. It works just as well since the cops section off dedicated travel routes. Use that bus to/from the stadium, and take a MARTA train to one of the outlying park and ride stations (with the large parking lots) and it is the easiest way to get to and from the stadium.

The start time isn’t about who was the bigger draw. It was about time zones. If they had put the O’s/Rangers game at the 5pm slot then it would have been 4pm local time in Arlington, making it even more difficult for the locals to get out to the park.

@ Dum-Bass and @ CSP….MLB was prepared to showcase the AL Wild Card as the prime time game for a couple of reasons…1) They though Oakland would be the top wild card and would need the 8 ET slot for a 5 PT start. (No way did they expect Texas to fade.)….2) There was a chance (albeit a long shot) the Yankees could have hosted the Wild Card game, and you know they get prime time.

Not a fan of Selig, but this WC game is a great idea. Too many WCs have won the Series over the years, this gives them one more hurdle. Braves will win Friday then split first 2 with Nats, you’ll see!

The one-game playoff is better for the Braves than a best of 3 series. To adevance the team has to win a last game whether it is a game 3 or a game 1. In the 1 game playoff they have their best chance to win — the hottest pitcher starting and a rested bullpen. If they advance, they are at much less of a disadvantage in the next round with their pitching still relatively fresh and a rotation set that would have Medlen and Hudson pitching the game/s needed to advance. The suirviving WC team would be at a much bigger disadvantage in subsequent rounds if it had to survive a 3-game playoff.
