Braves vs. Cardinals — Friday at 5:07 p.m.

Rush hour in the ATL will be even busier this week when baseball’s first-ever Wild Card game is played at Turner Field.

The Braves plan to have 45,000 foam tomahawks chopping in unison when they face St. Louis on Friday at 5:07 p.m. in the National League Wild Card game, to be televised nationally on TBS. The winner of the single-game playoff will advance to a best-of-five division series against Washington that begins Sunday in Atlanta or St. Louis, with a starting time to be announced.

Kris Medlen, who is 9-0 with a 0.97 ERA in 12 starts since moving from Atlanta’s bullpen, will start Friday against Cardinals right-hander Kyle Lohse (16-3, 2.86 ERA).

The first 45,000 ticket-holders through the gates will get a free foam tomahawk. Braves parking lots are sold out and will open five hours before the game, while stadium gates will open at 2:07 p.m., three hours before the first pitch. Country singer Travis Tritt, a Marietta native, will sing the national anthem.

The only tickets left for Friday’s game as of Wednesday afternoon were standing-room only tickets ($18) and single-game suite tickets ($100, which includes a $25 food and beverage credit). Those are available online at www.braves.com/postseason, or at the Turner Field ticket windows beginning at 8:30 a.m. Fans can also pick up pre-purchased tickets at the ticket windows, which will stay open until the end of the sixth inning.

The Braves strongly urge fans to arrive early, and for those who haven’t already purchased parking passes to take MARTA to the game. The MARTA Braves shuttle will run beginning 90 minutes before the first pitch from the Underground Atlanta/Five Points station, and continue until one hour after the game’s final out.

If the Braves advance to the division series, Games 1 and 2 would be at Turner Field Sunday and Monday. Fans can purchase tickets in postseason strips by calling 404-577-9100, or single-game tickets online at www.braves.com/postseason

Starting the game in the middle of rush hour traffic ensures that thousands of ticket holders will be sitting in traffic long after the game begins. Pretty shabby treatment TBS.

Gene, people who bought tickets knew that the time of the game had not been announced and that they would not findout until the last minute. I am pretty sure many will take the day off or take a half day and will get there early. The lots are opening 5 hours early and gates 3 hours. It will be fine.

Not this year. Not getting caught again by those SOBs. No negativity here on the blog from now until the end of the year. Tired of it. Concerns are one thing, but just flat out saying the Braves will lose sends out bad vibes and is just unpleasant to read.

We can do this, we can win. It’s going to be hard, the Cards have the NL’s best offense, we might just have all of baseball’s best pitcher (at least at the moment). Today (even though the game was meaningless) was a good step in the right direction. Offense battled and scraped together some runs against a solid pitcher in Burnett. Heyward and Mac have multi hit games. Chipper’s work in the cage paid off with a nice hit to right field, Uggs got an RBI, Bourn was stealing bases and the back end of our bullpen (minus Kimbrel getting a little wild) looked good.

We have a good team here, regardless of what ANYONE thinks will happen on Friday. At times the offense struggles, but if the offense can scrape together some runs the way they did today, we can win. And they’re capable of blowing the door off the hinges, this team has scored a lot of runs this year. They haven’t been doing it lately, and Lohse is a very good pitcher, but you have to believe.

The Braves have something magical about them this year. I for one, regardless of what the negative nancies say, think they can win this game and make a run.

Go Braves!

The reason the Braves are playing the early game is because MLB had to set the times today and both the Yankees and Orioles were playing Wed Night with the possiblity that they could be tied and need a 1 game playoff on Thursday so by giving the AL the late game they had more time to travel if needed. Doesn’t look like a game will be needed on thursday now but that was not known at the time MLB had to set the game times.

Bummer to win 94 games and have to play St. Louis to get into the real playoffs, but if MLB is going to have a wild card it makes sense to have two instead of one. The game in Oakland today was huge because of the new wild card format.

I really think we will cruise past the Cardinals. They have a horrible road record this year, and we are the better team.

Does anyone remember Jason Heyward having problems with a couple of ball in the sun in RF during the year? I know there were some games that started at 4PM for FOX but was there not one or two that started at 5PM or 6PM for some reason? I do recall JH missing at least one out there due to the sun during one of those games. This could be a problem on Friday. Of course it will be a problem for BOTH RFs. Seriously, for various reasons there could not be a worse starting time for this game! Seems the AL always gets priority, and the NL(Braves) get screwed!

Shouldn’t you be making your inane comments on your second division team’s blog? I think the AL play in game is in Texas. Thus, the later starting time for that game. Sucks for Braves fans but what else can they do. MLB wants as much prime time exposure as possible. Hope the Braves bring their big boy bats for this game. Lohse is tough. , he is right handed and the Braves have already beaten this year. But, a typical Medlen start will get the job done.

“The Braves have something magical about them this year. I for one, regardless of what the negative nancies say, think they can win this game and make a run. ”

The W/L shows a strong season, but was one of the sloppiest and most inconsistant performances throughout the season that I’ve ever followed. Key players had super slumps and looked horrible at times. The Braves and others benefited by a larger than normal slate of underperforming teams. The Cards played poorly much of the season. Medlen and Kimbral….without their shut down performances this team would be watching games on TV. It was a weird year watching a bunch of teams looking bad half the time. Look at Oakland…….small payroll and the team knocks out all the big spenders. Think about this before you rant about signing Bourne and McCann and any other 30+ year old free agents. I take great satisfaction in seeing the Angels sitting at home right now after its spending spree to buy a championship. Pujols is probably in hiding right now. Go Braves & Cards!

As a baseball fan, I love what the additional Wildcard team did for interest in baseball down the stretch. But I don’t like the “one game” format because it doesn’t represent what the Braves accomplished this year. After 162 games, we finished with the exact same record as the winner of the West (Giants 94-68). Yet we don’t at least have a best 2 of 3? In 2013 I wish they would finish on a Wednesday….use the following Friday – Sunday weekend for a best of 3 Wildcard Playoff weekend, and start the Division Championship Series the following Monday. It still awards the Division winners, but isn’t too long from the point of their last day of the season.

Wow. Plus lohse has been money and Cards are on a roll.

Having said all this it means nada. Uggla could rise up and remind everyone of why he was an allstar or not. Actually, a 1 game playin suits the Braves better. They have the hottest pitcher going and a rested bullpn behind him. The Cardinals are as good or better at all of the other ppositions on the field and have a decent piching staff of their own. If the Wild Card series was best 2 out of 3, the Braves would still have to win that one last game and go into the next series with their pitching already stressed. The Braves have a better shot at beating the Cardinals in a 1 game playoff than they do of winning 2 out of 3 and have a better chance of matching up against the next opponent.

That’s what a DVR is for. Set the game to record and you don’t miss a pitch (plus you can fast forward through the commercials). I like the Braves chances for this historic one game wildcard playoff. The Braves might have choked in seasons past, but this is a new team and one that has shown a flare for the dramatic. Some people talk about the Braves getting blown out by the Cards, but it does not seem likely given Medlen’s propensity for giving up next to nothing and allowing his team to win 23 straight games that he has started. Gonzo is going to blow this game all by himself. In the bottom of fourth with men on first and third and one out he has the eighth batter Simmons to put down a safey sqiuz and the pitcher comming up next are you @#$%^ kidding me !!!! Needless to say it did not work . Simmons was called for interference and Freeman never moved off third base; tow out and the pitcher strikes out end of inning. Could be END of season. once again GONZO manages like a clown.
