His value has never been higher… we’ll see this winter. His quotes gotta be good.
October 2nd, 20129:50 pm
Going out with our usual whimper….
I don’t get it.
2 more losses and off to the fishing hole apparently. Sigh….
October 2nd, 20129:52 pm
Braves lost the last six games of the 2009 season, two of the last three of the 2010 season, the last five games of the 2011 season and two of the last three of the 2012 season.
Meanwhile, Baltimore? Tied for first in the AL East.
October 2nd, 20129:54 pm
You guys think the Braves will pick up the option for McCann next year. Just wondering if there is any quality catching to start eyeing out now?
October 2nd, 20129:56 pm
I really wanted to choke that horn player!!!!
The guy with the horn will play percussion at his next gig in Starkville.
October 2nd, 20129:57 pm
Mac is just awful now…..
I hate to think how he will embarass himself on Friday as he joins with uggla to go a long way towards costing us the game.
October 2nd, 20129:58 pm
That horn was awful….
Speaking of Triple Crown and MVP – Ted Williams batted for the triple crown in 1942 and 1947. Both years he finished second in MVP voting!
Didn’t the writers vote on the MVP back then? Not trying to start another controversy, but Ted W. had no use for the media and the feeling was reciprocated.
October 2nd, 20129:59 pm
Bronke: Only catcher that I can think of off the top of my head is Napoli…. don’t know how much he’d want, and he isn’t much this year either. He’s 30 and hitting .232. Had a great year last year though…
However, it’s pointless in my opinion. Mac will be back next year.
The guys (save for the fine pitching) have been flat for a while now.
Not very encouraging.
What’s the deal with Yankee Stadium.
All it’s missing is the vuvuzela.
October 2nd, 201210:00 pm
October 2nd, 201210:01 pm
your closer has a 6 ERA Boston ……
WTF was that?
It’s like they built that place next to a Six Flags.
That’s not a real baseball stadium.
What is it, like 190 to right field?

October 2nd, 201210:03 pm
A quick check shows that the mvp has been voted on by the writers since 1931. Hard to imagine how making a comment on Ted Williams at this late date would “start another controversy.” What power you must have!
Not sure if they showed it on tv, but as the crowd was chanting for Chipper to come out, he went over to Fredi, put his arm around him and said something to him. Kinda stunk he didn’t come out. A lot of people near where I was sitting had traveled just to see him. But it’s a gamble when you travel, never know who you’re going to see.
October 2nd, 201210:04 pm
Yankees Urgency…..catch it!
October 2nd, 201210:05 pm
The previous comment was in regards to the cornucopia of empty seats and the atmosphere of a Sunday matinee.
Still seems rather subdued in spite of being on the verge of taking the game.
In fact, like candy from a baby it would seem.
Here Comes Honey Boo Boo

You guys think the Braves will pick up the option for McCann next year. Just wondering if there is any quality catching to start eyeing out now?
Mike Napoli is a free agent when the season ends….
October 2nd, 201210:07 pm
Brian Jordan really? you think whether or not Hanson is on the post season roster will be a “tough decision” … come on now
October 2nd, 201210:09 pm
“You guys think the Braves will pick up the option for McCann next year….”
Sure hope NOT!
October 2nd, 201210:10 pm
Thanks guys for the feedback. I used to love having McCann in the lineup but he has deteriorated so much over the last 2 years. It’s hard to watch him these days. Wish he can recover a portion of what he used to be. Catchers don’t seem to have a long shelf life these days.
… I don’t know why I said Brian Jordan, brain thinks one thing fingers type another
October 2nd, 201210:12 pm
Yes, McCann will be on the roster next season. Whether or not it’s a good idea is virtually irrelevant.
October 2nd, 201210:14 pm
you think whether or not Hanson is on the post season roster will be a “tough decision” … come on now
Wow… that’s not tough at all
October 2nd, 201210:15 pm
Did we really get 8 hits?
And one run.
Why is that surprising?
I don’t know. It’s not.
Tex choking like a Brave with RISP…
October 2nd, 201210:16 pm
Interesting and perceptive essay for trekkies everywhere…
October 2nd, 201210:20 pm
Hugo – thanks – will read after I cook…
October 2nd, 201210:21 pm
I really can’t believe folks are upset about a loss where we play our bench and our worst starting pitcher??? What gives? Are you folks serious? Really?
Now, I’m hopeful that we will get some regulars some AB’s tomorrow. If we win, great. If we lose, it really doesn’t matter at this point.
But I’m hoping Fredi read DOB’s previous blog about going into the playoffs strong, and not resting up everybody for 3 days in a row.
October 2nd, 201210:24 pm
But it was always Tex’s dream to play in Yankee stadium. Yeah right. I don’t mind a guy taking the biggest paycheck, but at least be man enough to admit that you took the cash!
October 2nd, 201210:27 pm
Tex never denied it was about the money. He said it was a business decision. The Yankees offered the most money (and, at the time, the best shot at a ring for a guy that had never been to the playoffs)
October 2nd, 201210:30 pm
I have enough medical expertise to say that ni the fifth inning Hanson should have been driven directly to an ICU for recovery. Seriously, the kid isn’t well. I really like the guy, but he’s fighting a losing battle without some help. He really shouldn’t be our “worst” starting pitcher, he has serious health issues.
I don’t remember that part. I remember some lame story about always wanting to play in Yankee stadium. But I could be mis-remembering………..
(but truthfully, wouldn’t you take similar cash from the Angels to play in southern CA over playing in the Big Apple???)
October 2nd, 201210:34 pm
Not Anaheim. I’d take New York over Orange County any day But I seem to recall Tex saying that his choices were just business. He’s in a position to capitalize on making the most money possible in a pretty short amount of time, so I can’t begrudge him that. He may have added on to make it seem less callous, but I never held it against him…
October 2nd, 201210:35 pm
Nope. Not back then and not now… Angels have been spending money lately and still haven’t had success. That’s part of the reason I find it hard to believe that a certain pitcher will stay out there.
October 2nd, 201210:39 pm
Wainwright didn’t want to celebrate stated that he will do so when they beat Braves. Well guess what What way things are going right now. Wainwright might not be able to celeberate at all. Cardinals have almost lost the game and the Dodger’s are threatning.
October 2nd, 201210:40 pm
Derick blow tn for the yanks in 11th will sox yank one?
Derek Lowe pitching? What is Giradi thinking? I mean you are fighting for division lives and Derek Lowe?
I want the Yankees to lose but Derek Lowe????
October 2nd, 201210:41 pm
Come on D-Lowe.
Give it up.
You know you want to.
October 2nd, 201210:43 pm
Hell, I’ll play the Dodgers.
We’ve got to be able to beat them.
The Cardinals would be a hell of a lot sweeter but any way you can win, just win.
October 2nd, 201210:44 pm
Keylargo – from wikipedia
In January 1942, Williams was drafted into the military, being put into Class 1-A. A friend of Williams suggested that Williams see the advisor of the Governor’s Selective Service Appeal Agent, since Williams was the sole support of his mother, arguing that Williams should not have been placed in Class 1-A, and said Williams should be reclassified to Class 3-A. The attorney took the case to the Appeals Board and the board rejected the case. Angry, the attorney took the case to the Presidential Board. Williams was reclassified to 3-A ten days later. Afterwards, the public reaction was extremely negative.Quaker Oats stopped sponsoring Williams, and Williams, who previously had eaten Quaker products “all the time”, never “[ate] one since” the company stopped sponsoring him.
Williams felt that he should have gotten a “little more consideration” because of him winning the Triple Crown, and he thought that “the reason I didn’t get more consideration was because of the trouble I had with the draft boards.
Sheets to retire – for the love of the game.
October 2nd, 201210:47 pm
Peter King @SI_PeterKing
Bobby is not trying to win this game. Absurd. O’s must be throwing crap at the TV in St. Pete.
Peter King @SI_PeterKing
To not pinch-run for Saltalamacchia here … totally irresponsible.
Does anyone still like Bobby V?
The Yankees just tied the game like it was nothing.
It would take an act of God for the Braves to come back from two down in the 9th inning, of any game ever.
October 2nd, 201210:54 pm
Do you actually follow the games? What a bumb!
The Braves were tied with the Yankees in wins coming into tonight’s game. The Braves have come back in quite a few games over the year. I understand that they are having issues w/ RISP, but man if a person came on the blog and read your comments, they’d think we had won 60-70 games this year.
October 2nd, 201210:55 pm
So, is this going to be Chipper’s last home run?
October 2nd, 201210:57 pm
You can write all you want about this team, but odds are stacked against us……. We just lost to a pitcher who had given us 5 walks a 6 plus era and a 0-6 record in the majors, and we could only muster 2 hits in an embarrassing loss as we were trying to win the division ?……besides the good news…
Medlen…….. I think will have a good start, but really he already broke the MLB record for consecutive starts with a win…… So that means odds are stacked against him. All of a sudden we will win all the games he starts ? Please.
My theory is the hitters will choke, and we will lose a close one….. say 3-1 or something like that, we will strike out allot, especially when it counts….. and maybe Medlen won’t even take the loss or give up a run.
Then we will be done Bourne gone..and wow next year we will have some good pitching, but who will take the place of Chippers bat and really when are we going to get some real out fielders ?
Uggla will weigh us down with his huge contract….. And lead off will be ? Prado ?
Gosh I hope I am WRONG !
October 2nd, 201210:59 pm
Ellsbury for hanson and hinske?
October 2nd, 201211:01 pm
Me too (hope you are wrong).
Let’s worry about next year in another 5-6 weeks.
“Ellsbury for hanson and mccann?”
That’ll work for me!
October 2nd, 201211:02 pm
C’mon Lowe, cough one up for us here…………. (my Yankee dislike runs deep!)
Peter go pick a peck of pickled peppers
October 2nd, 201211:03 pm
Really another Scott Boras boy.. Please Bourne is another and he will be gone… he will price all of his players out or reach.
The Red Sox would never make that trade…… besides….. Hanson is in decline.
October 2nd, 201211:04 pm
How ya been? As much as I love having a catcher who can hit, I can understand folks questioning whether to keep McCann or not. Salary. Conditioning. Injury History. A lot of factors to consider.
But my guess is he stays at least 1 more year. If he has another bad year in 2013, I’d expect him to be dealt to an AL team or non tendered.
October 2nd, 201211:05 pm
Bird in a bucket aint no picnic
October 2nd, 201211:06 pm
chipontheroad .. I like Pickled peppers and pickles…..
Still we are not getting Ellsbury…. come on now……..and for Hanson and Hinskey ???? Really ???
Is that little bird an Oriole?
What would it be like if the Dodgers beat out the Cards for the last WC slot. And ideally had to do it on Thursday!!!
And then if Cincy beats out the Nats for the #1 seed. Then the Nats would have to face the Giants in the NLDS. I’ll take my chances with the Dodgers and Reds.
October 2nd, 201211:08 pm
Fine, thanks DS1.
I concur with your prediction.
How many of those big buck Angel players do you think live in Anaheim?
October 2nd, 201211:09 pm
The way McCann has played, not sure I wouldn’t want Salty instead ?
McCann is a liability behind the plate, and Salty has more pop in his bat it seems….. at least more home runs 25 to 20.
October 2nd, 201211:10 pm
I’d suspect some of those Angels live in Newport Beach if they live in Orange County.
If it’s good enough for Kobe, then it’s probably good enough to Pujols & Co.
Ellsbury for Hanson+…
October 2nd, 201211:13 pm
Hanson finishes his disappointing season with a bad night against Pirates
October 2nd, 201211:14 pm
no not really dude it was a joke but Medlen can’t win because he’s been winning to much? really?
Did that Yankees broadcaster just say “Nice snatch?”
Bravos quotage after loss to Bucs
October 2nd, 201211:15 pm
Possible CF candidate for 2013: Franklin Gutierrez
Nickname is “Death to Flying Things”
Salary is a bit heavy at 7 mil for 2013 with a 7.5 option for 2014.
Came back from injuries to finish a respectable 260/309/420, which are a tad over his career numbers. Would the Mariners be willing to deal him? Plus, he hits RH.
October 2nd, 201211:16 pm
DS1. I hope like heck I am wrong… but after the pathetic showing in Pittsburg, with the division still in reach tells me everything I need to know about the hitters on the team……
We traded away our speed two years ago while in first place……also has anyone noticed how poorly Bourne has done this year stealing bases ?
Bourne has 40 stolen bases as a Brave in the full season……his worst year since 2008…. what did the Braves put a muzzle on this guy instead of having him wide open ?
We don’t have a way to manufacture runs if we don’t hit the long ball……..and we don’t do that all that well.
October 2nd, 201211:17 pm
Alright Raul, loved you as a Phillie, lets see some more magic!
October 2nd, 201211:18 pm
That’s what I’m talking about Raul!!!!
Oh, probably none of them. There are a lot of really nice areas near there (by “near” I mean within an hour long drive)- Newport, Laguna, Santa Margarita, lots of places…
Yankees win. Of course, OBP is useless, so the walk by Cervelli couldn’t have been any good…
Let me see. Saltalamacchia and McCann had almost identical seasons. Mac was hurt during part of the year. Salty was not.
The odds of Mac having a better year in 2013 than Salty are pretty high.
October 2nd, 201211:19 pm
Dam yankee’s lowe with the win
Ibanez… (imagine sounding like “Newman”)…
October 2nd, 201211:20 pm
chipontheroad.. got the joke. no harm no foul……. yes the ” ODDS ” of him continuing to win is just that.
And the Braves can manufacture a loss…..especially in a big game….. I have zero confidence in the hitters not Medlen.
Of course he can throw a shut out…..and we can maybe still win…. Medlen is capable.
nice pitching decisions there in the 9th inning Bobby V … a pair of 6+ ERA relievers????
October 2nd, 201211:21 pm
Mixxo finally admits to being a Phillies’ fan…
October 2nd, 201211:23 pm
Yes he is a better player no doubt by his……PAST SEASONS……….. If he doesn’t get hurt……or too fat, or something ?
Those aren’t exactly “trade value inflating” quotes from Fredi and Ross.
Exactly what “speed” did we deal 2 years ago?
I do not like the Yankees, but Ibanez is certainly clutch.
Yet he has won 13 games on a playoff team and is only 26 years old. What’s he worth? Who would have thought just recently that our future wouldn’t include either Jurrjens or Hanson? I’m thinking we better put him in a deal this year before this becomes Jurrjens x2. Agree or Disagree? — Garla
I don’t know that you could get anything of value in return. His trade value is at a low right now. It’s a real tough spot to be in. No easy solutions.
October 2nd, 201211:25 pm
I don’t know that you could get anything of value in return. His trade value is at a low right now.
Totally agree, despite what others think.
October 2nd, 201211:26 pm
Not a Phillie fan but, I do like Ibanez….and Victorino….and Ruiz.
The rest of ‘em….not so much.
October 2nd, 201211:28 pm
Is Fredi doing exactly what you said he shouldn’t be doing a blog or so back? I’m hoping he has most if not all the starters in tomorrow for at least 2/3 of the game. We need to go into this thing with our hitters hitting!
Sounds like Gwinnett County residents can look forward to seeing Tommy at a AAA ballpark near them.
October 2nd, 201211:29 pm
I love the quotes. Thanks for putting those together this year.
Now, can you please get me a game time for Friday? (J/K!)
October 2nd, 201211:30 pm
Blanco went then we traded away Infante.. sorry different years……my bad……. but we were capable of playing small ball before…….not now unless Bourne can actually get on base.
Perfect time for him to slump……. Plus Bounre was our best hitter with men on base, and that is sad !
October 2nd, 201211:31 pm
Potentially terrible week-end:
1) Braves lose to Cardinals
2) Georgia loses to SC
3) Kentucky plays
Potentially Great sports week-end
1) Braves make it through Columbus Day with a 2-0 lead in Best of 5 against Nats
2) Georgia beats SC
3) Patrick Towles burns his redshirt and Kentucky upsets Miss St.
October 2nd, 201211:32 pm
Hinske will not be a Brave in 2013.
Matt Ryan gettin some love on NFLN
October 2nd, 201211:33 pm
DS1, the tone tonight is cheerful cynicism in case you were wondering.
That’s how I’m rolling at the moment.
Last night? Bitter disappointment with a generous sprinkling of disgust.
DS1, I vow to you if the Braves win the World Series, I will leave the blog for good.
As a gift to you. That’s a promise.
Can’t wait for 2013!
We Will Get Fooled Again
October 2nd, 201211:34 pm
Tomorrow may be meaningless as far as playoff seeding, but it’s important that the Braves get out of this offensive rut. Don’t want to go into a do-or-die game swinging ice-cold bats.
We talk baseball, other sports, music, movies, BBQ and whatever (except politics or religion)
