I suspect that McCann’s injuries are worse than are being reported.

Unlikely he would have played yesterday (or gotten two hits, for that matter) if the problem were so bad that Fredo would sit him for the one-gamer, because of it. That would make zero sense. Sit him yesterday and hope he heals enough for Friday, OK; not the other way around.

Brava,

Where do you think all those tickets are right now? (See ebay and stubhub and the guy on the street corner).

Sell out or not, people are making excuses to not attend this game at 5:00.

I promise you that.

I’m not saying attendance will be light. I am saying that there is already a built in excuse and tons of people are complaining that the game is at a terrible time and that they would go, but . . .

But here’s what should happen. Everyone else should know this, realize that tickets are available and make sure they take advantage of the opportunity to get to this game.

Place will hopefully be packed by 6:00.

I hope I am wrong and the place is exploding at 4:30. But, I just can’t see 50,000 pulling this off successfully and getting into the building that early.

I think many of us wish that tomorrow 5pm doesn’t come. I think we are all scared of the fact that our season might end tomorrow. Today we are here with hope for tomorrow. We are excited because we are alive but tomorrow we could be dead. It is like being on life support. Braves Nation is on life support. Let us hope that tomorrow doesn’t come because not only can it be the end of our season but also Chipper Jones.

Please don’t project your insecurities and mental weaknesses on the rest of us.

I’m not scared the season will end tomorrow. If it does, it does. Out of my control. The sun will still come up on Saturday. My dog will still crap on the floor that morning. The 4 year old will still have a soccer game that morning.

“Unlikely he would have played yesterday…”

But, P-Town said he couldn’t hit the ball out of the in-field in batting practice. He saw his arm literally hanging by a thread. A thread!

(I do think that McCann is hurting worse than was reported. But, I don’t think it’s enough to send him to off-season surgery just yet.

If he’s on the play-in roster, he should start.

Veer, I’m not a fan of the one-game playoff, the current set-up, etc. and of course I’ll gladly make a well-reasoned case against it. But, with all due respect, I think your 12:20 pm post is taking the game a little too serious.

Win or lose Friday, I’ll still realize that the Braves were probably the second-best team in the NL in 2012. The postseason is fun and all but it’s just one game and several short series. I want the Braves to win the Series as badly as anyone but I’ll hang my hat on what they did throughout 162 games.

Veer

This one game playoff isn’t an adrenaline or exciting. It is pure torture. To have 94 wins and be 6 games better than the Cardinals and then have to play a 1 game coin flip head or tales match?
This is injustice. If Cardinals were 6 games better than we were then i would feel privilaged to play this 1 game playoff but having that much better record then the Cardinals and having played in much tougher division this one game playoff is an injustice. Cardinals played almost 40 games aganist the Cubs and the Astros.

The hilarious and crazy thing about these one-game playoffs is that people will assign much larger meanings to them than it just being one baseball game.

We pretty much know which teams are the best teams of 2012. We can’t really learn anything new in this regard over the next few weeks.

Well, of course this game means more than any other “one game”. Nobody in baseball plays to be “one of the best teams”. They play for that trophy with all the flags on it. This one game will determined whether the Braves continue to have the opportunity top pursue that.

Someone should write a play … “Waiting for the Play-in Game.”

A country road. A tree.

Evening.

Veer, sitting on a low mound, is trying to take off his boot. He pulls at it with
both hands, panting. He gives up, exhausted, rests, tries again.
As before.
Enter The Braves Season.

Veer:
(giving up again). Nothing to be done.

The Braves Season:
(advancing with short, stiff strides, legs wide apart). I’m beginning to come
round to that opinion. All my life I’ve tried to put it from me, saying “The Braves Season”, be
reasonable, you haven’t yet tried everything. And I resumed the struggle. (He
broods, musing on the struggle. Turning to Veer.) So there you are again.

Veer:
Am I?

The Braves Season::
I’m glad to see you back. I thought you were gone forever.

Veer:
Me too.

The Braves Season::
Together again at last! We’ll have to celebrate this. But how? (He reflects.) Get
up till I embrace you.

Veer:
(irritably). Not now, not now.

The Braves Season::
(hurt, coldly). May one inquire where His Highness spent the night?

Veer:
In a ditch.

The Braves Season::
(admiringly). A ditch! Where?

Veer:
(without gesture). Over there.

The Braves Season::
And they didn’t beat you?

Veer:
Beat me? Certainly they beat me.

The Braves Season::
The same lot as usual?

Veer:
The same? I don’t know.

The Braves Season::
When I think of it . . . all these years . . . but for me . . . where would you be . . .
(Decisively.) You’d be nothing more than a little heap of bones at the present
minute, no doubt about it.

Veer:
And what of it?

The Braves Season::
(gloomily). It’s too much for one baseball season. (Pause. Cheerfully.) On the other hand
what’s the good of losing heart now, that’s what I say. We should have thought
of it a million years ago, in the nineties.

Veer:
Ah stop blathering and help me off with this bloody thing.

Here’s the thing. If the baseball God’s really existed, then the Cardinals would win on Friday. That way less total fans would be miserable on Saturday morning when they wake up and realize their team had lost. This is assuming the Cardinals have more overall diehard fans than the Braves.

You’d think if there were Baseball God’s they would want LESS of us to be unhappy. But since I don’t believe in Baseball God’s, I’m going with our team and Medlen tomorrow.

MLB on XM is reporting that Ross is going to start on Friday. Personally, I think Fredi is overthinking, unless Mac is hurting more than we have been told.

So either way, I’m not deserting the team.

BTW, I looked at Lohse’s numbers again….

He was 1-0 w/ 6 no decisions against playoff teams w/ a 3.80 ERA….BUT against the Braves & Nats, he has 3 no decisions and a 7.56 ERA…

In 20 of his 33 starts, the Cardinals have scored 4 or more runs for him…..so limiting their runs will mean a great deal to the Braves winning…

The good news on the Braves side, the team has averaged close to 6 runs per game w/ Meds on the hill AND have not scored less than 2 runs yet and the tipping point is 6 runs….

I have to feel that if the Braves get near that, we certainly win.

Brian, yes, in the sense that players play to win the Series, I absolutely agree. Top 10 pitchers in the playoffs by Keith Law

10. Madison Bumgarner, LHP, San Francisco Giants
9. Johnny Cueto, RHP, Cincinnati Reds
8. Max Scherzer, RHP, Detroit Tigers
7. Adam Wainwright, RHP, St. Louis Cardinals
6. Kris Medlen, RHP, Atlanta Braves
I’ll admit to punting slightly on Medlen; you could make a strong case I have him too high, or too low, but I don’t think you could make a strong case that I should have omitted him. Medlen has been pitching like an ace the past few months thanks to plus command of three pitches, including an out-pitch changeup that FanGraphs’ pitch run values rated as the most valuable in the National League this year. Medlen’s curveball was sharper this year, with better depth even than it had prior to his Tommy John surgery, and because Atlanta vacillated on his role and kept him in the bullpen early in the year, they have the good fortune to have Medlen fairly fresh heading into October.
5. CC Sabathia, LHP, New York Yankees
4. Gio Gonzalez, LHP, Washington Nationals
3. Yu Darvish, RHP, Texas Rangers
2. Matt Cain, RHP, San Francisco Giants
1. Justin Verlander, RHP, Detroit Tigers

P-Town, Moylan tweeted yesterday that he would not be playing in the post-season.

From Bowman

The Braves will carry six relievers. Craig Kimbrel, Eric O’Flaherty, Jonny Venters, Luis Avilan, Cory Gearrin and Chad Durbin appear to be the most likely players to fill this group.

The battle for the final two bench spots seems to involve Eric Hinske, Lyle Overbay and Jeff Baker. I’m guessing they go with the left-handed Hinske and right-handed Baker.

I agree with the BP, and the 2 bench spots seem accurate. Though, Overbay did do okay yesterday, I wouldn’t be totally against that.

MFin04, I agree with that. Mac strengthens our weak bench.

16 position players….we already know 10 with BMac and Boscan making the trip….

Reed Johnson is a lock for 11

I am gonna make Constanza a lock for #12

Francisco I would think is a lock because of his spot starts during the year and his pop so thats #13

So 3 spots are down to Baker, Overbay, Pastornicky, and Hinske

Because Baker is a RH bat w/ a bit of pop and Pastornicky can bunt and run and also is a backup middle infielder, I think they make it….

So the last spot goes to either Hinske or Overbay…..who do you choose?

#Braves would likely go with 11 pitchers in longer series, add 4th starter and another reliever to expected 9-man staff they’ll have for WC

No Hanson, I’m sure… CMart may be the extra reliever. From a tweet Moylan sent out yesterday, I doubt he’s pitching this post-season.

Teams have until 3 p.m. on Thursday to set their 25-man roster for this wild card game.

I would take Hinske over Overbay.

So, Ross vs. Lohse for one game? Mac isn’t the best option for an elimination game, but will be for Sunday vs. Gio Gonzalez? I’m so confused.

No more so than folks here who would point to a Fredo lineup decision as validation. Bubba, please.

He’s already playing scared. First-inning bunt to follow.
