Well, we can agree to disagree. I just think Ross is the better catcher (given the current circumstances) in a must-win game. Plenty of opportunities to let Mac start once we get over this hump.
*****************************************************
Love Heap, but have to AGREE with you on this. I hope I do not here from McFann on this.
So, after spending 2 days trying to find someone to take my second ticket to Friday afternoon’s tilt, I finally wised up, bought a standing room ticket, and will take my wife and 3-year old.
I don’t want to get on McFann’s bad side either, George. Just really, really want to win this game and, in my opinion, Ross gives us a better chance (and that’s only because Mac is hurt). I love the guy, too.
In an unlikely even if we jump off to an early 7-0 lead I would just go ahead and use my bullpen from the 2nd to the 9th inning. Medlen can be rested and then possibly start game 1 vs the Nationals.
Unlijkely but if this were to happen why not save Medlen? Use Minor instead to take over the game
“I’m in the Green lot, T. I might come over and check you guys out. Going alone, so I’ll need to do something to kill time.”
I usually hang out in the Green Lot because of the trees and Shade when its hot as balls Outside. I will be sure to stop by….There is a Grill out in the Gold Lot with BBQ
You can sum it up like this: the Cardinals are better at scoring runs, and the Braves are better at preventing runs. Hopefully the preventing wins out.
I realize that Mac has had a rough year and he is banged up. Unless he comes out and says he can’t go, there is no way Fredi is not going to start him tomorrow. And he is going to hit 7th behind Uggla. And I love what Ross has meant to this club for the past few years. He is a great backup catcher. Hits well when not overexposed (see his early career numbers when he was a starter), has a good arm and calls a good game.
But Brian McCann is your perennial all star catcher. Granted his 2012 was not up to par. But do you really think Fredi is going to sit him for this game? Really? Not asking whether he should or shouldn’t, but whether he WILL or not.
And for what I know he means to this team, he should be in there. Is this all too hard to understand?
“Even with the Cardinals starting right hander Kyle Lohse, there has been some indication that the Braves are going to have David Ross behind the plate for Friday’s gmae”
“Cardinals lineup scares me” …..Well, yeah, that’s why they are in the playoffs. Would you rather face the Nats, Reds, or Giants? Go to the Cards fan blogs…do you think their fans are excited about facing Medlen in Atlanta?
I don’t understand what is so hard to grasp about this….
Brian has had an AWFUL year, he is not hitting for power which is what he is good for, and he was never a good defensive catcher….
In a win or go home game where runs could be at a premium against a team with some running threats with a pitcher on the hill who is more comfortable w/ Rossy behind the dish….
Heck, the Braves could go with Pastornicky at SS in this game too. But they won’t! Bradley is reaching. We could rest Chipper and play Constanza. But they won’t.
If Mac can get out of bed on Friday morning, he will be starting.
Considering McCann’s nagging shoulder injury and strained mastring (made worse by catching), I’d go with Ross, too – but not because Medlen’s numbers are not quite as good with Mac – there isn’t enough difference to matter in the seven or so innings Meds will pitch. If Ross had caught Meds as much as Mac, his jnumbers would rise, as well and it’s not as if Medlen pitches poorly when Mac catches him.
A one-game playoff between two teams that finished 4th and 5th in the NL is not much different than a game 5 or game 7 between two teams that split the other games between them.
Game is on Friday and at home. Braves have their best pitching option lined up for the game and have no travel if they win the game. All their starters are healthy (as healthy as can be at the end of 162).
While this selfless attitude is admirable, this is the time of year when the Braves have to do whatever they believe gives them the best chance to win the World Series.
Don’t really need a quote there…..seen how they interact during BP, during side sessions, and on The David Ross show….oh, and the numbers don’t lie….Meds has been a BETTER pitcher w/ Rossy behind the plate….including the most telling number in missing bats….
I am convinced that the whiners don’t really want the Braves to win. What they really want, is to be able to do their thing during the game, and then tell us all how they knew it all along. Then they can rehash how bad the team, the GM, the manager, and the players are all Winter long.
I think the 5pm start helps the traffic situation. Most people will be on the road between 3:00 – 4:30. A 7pm start probably means people are trying to get downtown between 5 and 6pm which is the worst time to be on the road around here.

won’t help game time attendance, or the possibility of shadows (not sure exactly when those will hit – they may actually be in the worst position at the start of the game. Seems like in the past, we’d start around 3:30 or 4, and they’d be really nasty in the middle innings).
BTW, weather is supposed to be beautiful tomorrow.
“You have to go with Mac. He is a better hitter than Ross.
Mac has the power to hit singles which is good enough. He also has the ability to draw walks.”
Co-Sign! B-Macc also adds presence to the lineup….
I would start McCann…hasn’t had a good year, but I still think of him as more of an offensive threat than Ross.
Of course, he is. Lohse is not going to pitch McCann like some .230 hitter, he’ll pitch him like the back of the bubblegum card. Because he knows that shoulder or no, bad year or no, McCann has a good chance of hurting him. He’ll pitch David Ross like, well, David Ross. No comparison.
It’s a small edge, but you guys want every small advantage, no?
Mac will start unless he is too banged up to catch.
And I’d bet Medlen LOVES to pitch to both Ross and Mac. I watched him interacting in front of my eyes with Mac during the pre-game workouts when Medlen pitched in San Diego back before Labor Day. They seemed to have a great relationship.
NOW, if Mac’s hamstring is bothering him tomorrow, I wouldn’t be surprised if Ross starts. But if Mac is ready to go, he will be in the lineup.
And Ross is only marginally better defensively than Mac. He is human and he makes mistakes too.
Ross Rdrs for the year is 6, . BMac is at -1.
I’m sure sample size does play into that a bit, but Ross has played quite a few games this year, his most as a Braves (421). In fact, it’s his most since ‘07.
In all fairness, ppl shouldn’t b*tch and moan about traffic when most of us who live far away would LOVE to be whining about that instead of how we’re gonna figure out how to watch the game in between our work schedules….
IF you are down there and are working a half day or not at all that day, GO EARLY….the lots are opening at Noon….if you’re doing park & ride, go hang at the Bullpen across the street…..or find someone to hang and tailgate with….
Just please….stop b*tching when there are PLENTY of people like myself that would LOVE to be down there for the game.
Great pitching beats great hitting and right now Meddux is about as hot as a starting pitcher can get. My only concern is that when need to get him at least 1 run to work with and Chipper is off his A game. Uggla is hitting, but Mac is off, Heyword is off, and Freddy is not tearing the cover off the ball. Bourne has shown a little life. At this point we almost have to count on Uggla, Simmons, and Bourne to be the offense. That is a little troubling. I like our chances if Meds can get through the 6th with a lead.
I want the guy in there who actually gives us the best chance to win a 1 off game…..
And sorry guys, but you’ve been staring at the Brian McCann mirage for way too long….
Ross should be in there as he gives us not only a better chance at having 0 wild pitches in the game, but also ZERO stolen bases, and I think right now, he has a much better chance of going deep off Lohse….
Like I said, I watched BMac in BP over the weekend from 15 ft away…..and there just isn’t anything there….
Comparing Eddie Perez…..being a guy with small amount of pop and being a guy with a bad shoulder that eliminates your pop are two VERY completely different things….
Geez, why didn’t you just bring up Rafael Belliard hitting the foul pole in Shea as a comparison
Sometimes I wish I were a lefty… then I’d have total job security. Wouldn’t matter if I screwed up all the time. Wouldn’t matter if my performance at work was well below that of my coworkers. I’d keep getting the big, important jobs, even after messing them up day in and day out… all because I’m a lefty. When I did screw up, people would say “He’s got allergies, it’s not his fault” and they’d give me a pass. ‘Cause I’m a lefty.
Seems odd that people are overlooking, to a large degree, the possibility that McCann’s injury is pretty significant. In fact, we know it’s fairly significant and it could be even more so than we think.
Veer, October 4th, 2012, 10:58 am … “I am not being negative. It is just the gut feeling that I have.”
Since Veer’s gut is always negative, we need a “first moment of Veer’s gut” to get a sense as to whether his gut feeling for Friday’s game is more or less negative than usual.
I say go with McCann if his shoulder is truly feeling good. Otherwise, go with Ross, and use McCann if needed, as a LH PH. Better choice than most teams, either way.
This one game thing scaires the heck out of me. BUD, baseball is not the NFL, we play 162 games not 16 NFL has one game and out, baseball should have at least 2 out of 3. Next year please 2 out of three or do it really right ONLY ONE WC TEAM.
It’s funny. There are so many Braves fans around the country who would love to be at this game.
But so many Braves “fans” in Atlanta will make a myriad of excuses not to attend.
True story: One of the reasons I left Houston was becuase they were leaving the National League. My opportuntities to see the Braves were going to diminish notably.
So, I finagled my way back to the SE. This is my first chance to go to the Braves play-off game (never been to one) since 2005. I had tickets to Game 5 of the LDS that year. Game was never played.
No way I’m gonna pass up this chance. In a weird way, it’s like fulfilling a childhood dream.
I was telling my little girl last month that my parents wouldn’t even take me to games when I was her age (3). Now, she’s going to her first play-off game. An elimination game at that!
Forget college football for a week-end.
Forget surfing the Internet at work.
Forget traffic.
Forget your fear of MARTA.
Tomorrow at 5:00 is the first ever MLB wild card play-in game.
Tomorrow is win or go home. It’s win, or it’s Chipper Jones’ last game.
Atlanta and the rest of the SE needs to get off its collective butts and be there in force by 4:00 PM.
Because you go to war with your best eight guys, not your “best eight guys in the past week”. It ain’t rocket science.
You’re right, it’s not rocket science. It’s obvious that the best choice is Ross.
Ross throws out baserunners, McCann does not
Ross can hit for power, McCann can not
Ross and Medlen have put up better numbers than McCann and Medlen
It sucks that McCann is hurting this year, and that his injuries have impacted his performance in such a big way, but that’s just the way it is. If you don’t take that into account then I don’t know what to tell you.
And you don’t think he’s gonna lie through his teeth even if it isn’t….
Shaun making a real logical post there says it all….
Like I said….saw BP…..guys like Baker, Hinske are going yard…..BMac was TRYING….and he hit 1 HR at full max out in BP….but what I saw was the ball going out there and simply dying….his strength is gone….whether he wants to believe it or not, the shoulder is shot…..
I don’t mind BMac starting a game or two against the Nats in the NLDS if we get there, but Ross putting the gear on Friday is the best option for Friday.
Mac does have good numbers in a tie game… let him PH off the bench in a tie game, he’s hitting .280 there. He’s not hitting late&close, RISP, RISP&2outs. Also not hitting well when we’re behind or ahead, just tied.
I love the guy, hope he’s healthy next year and is a long-term Brave, but the guy hasn’t been himself this year. He hasn’t been healthy. He has potential to be our best guy, but right now, I don’t know if he is.
I don’t mind BMac starting a game or two against the Nats in the NLDS if we get there, but Ross putting the gear on Friday is the best option for Friday.
Co-sign. I might have Ross starting all Medlen starts, but definitely all elimination games (unless Mac gets on fire in the post-season)
I agree with Shaun. I suspect that McCann’s injuries are worse than are being reported. Ross got a lot more playing time the last couple of weeks than was justified by McCann’s slumping.
I think the decision on who catches will say a lot about McCann’s actual health then anything else.
On the other hand, if he’s truly injured, he should probably not be on the roster.
Mac does have good numbers in a tie game… let him PH off the bench in a tie game, he’s hitting .280 there. He’s not hitting late&close, RISP, RISP&2outs. Also not hitting well when we’re behind or ahead, just tied.
Do you really think any of these numbers have any sort of predictive value or indicate skill whatsoever?
scoots – As usual, you are the main voice of reason here. Let’s just say that I’d rather depend on the decision made by the Braves braintrust, than a vote of the fans on the blog.
the Marta issue is an endless debate. One or two crimes get plastered all over the media and it’s enough to freak people out for years.
I can assure you that any variance in crime rates on Atlanta public transportation are statistically insigifnicant from any other major city.
The big problem is that people don’t use it, so when they should or need to use it, they don’t know how to use it.
My personal opinion is that learning your city’s public transportation system is one of the smartest things you can do. You never know when you might need it.
Well, I was a 1st time MARTA rider on Thu and by Fri I felt like a pro….It was not difficult…the only real trick to it was when the Red lines shut down around 9p and you are at the North end and had to connect at Lindbergh….
But still, piece of cake….and while there are plenty of colorful characters, everyone is pretty friendly on the trains….
In fact, for the people that are really scared to ride….they sure as hell wouldn’t dare want to ride a Chicago train, because Midwesterners AREN’T friendly (for the most part)

And T-Hawkin….thats not right either…..he has NO power….he hasn’t had an XBH in ages and hasn’t hit a HR in even longer than that…..

you are right about the traffic.
won’t help game time attendance, or the possibility of shadows (not sure exactly when those will hit – they may actually be in the worst position at the start of the game. Seems like in the past, we’d start around 3:30 or 4, and they’d be really nasty in the middle innings).
BTW, weather is supposed to be beautiful tomorrow.

P-town,
Go BRAVES!

Mac does have good numbers in a tie game… let him PH off the bench in a tie game, he’s hitting .280 there. He’s not hitting late&close, RISP, RISP&2outs. Also not hitting well when we’re behind or ahead, just tied.

I agree with Shaun. I suspect that McCann’s injuries are worse than are being reported. Ross got a lot more playing time the last couple of weeks than was justified by McCann’s slumping.
I think the decision on who catches will say a lot about McCann’s actual health then anything else.
On the other hand, if he’s truly injured, he should probably not be on the roster.

the Marta issue is an endless debate.
