WAR does not necessarily equal value. Especially when all of it is defensive relative value. Martin Prado is the Braves MVP.
There are plenty of ways to determine value. WAR is one way that can help you. There are others.
Prado is a fine choice, as is Bourn, as is Heyward. Not much distinguishes those three players, with any sort of serious attempt to determine player value. Now I can speak to the attempts that aren’t serious or the attempts to assume one player is most valuable then working backwards in an attempt to prove that he is. The appropriate way is to probably be open to any possibility and to accept wherever the determination of player values takes you, no matter what your biases say about who should be MVP.
Kris Medlen, Mike Minor, Tim Hudson, Paul Maholm and then Hanson. Teheran and Delgado close to being ready. A couple of other guys that might be a year away.
And let’s not forget about our mid season “acquisition” in Brandon Beachy.
Guys, I could be wrong, but I really don’t see starting pitching being a big priority for FW this winter. My guess is he’s more worried about replacing Jones’ and Bourns’ bats and Michael’s defense.
I’m taking my family, including two school-age kids, to Friday’s game. Would MLB really delay announcing a start time for Braves until Thursday, if Orioles end up having to play a tiebreaker with the Yankees?
Prado finishes with a .301/.359/.438 line for the 2012 season. Solid bounceback offensive season for Prado. Great defense and versatility. Hoping he is one of the first to be locked up this winter.
Can anyone tell me the last time Francisco got a hit?
Was it the walk-off dribbler through the left side?!
I for the life of me can’t recall such a bad group of bench players….and that is considering we traded for the best PH-er in the game today in Reed Johnson….
Fransisco has no duty in being part of Friday game vs Cardinals. This guy is worthless. He will end the rally. I would take Hinske and Overbay over Fransisco
Yes, a total of 200 ft worth of hits, but 2 hits indeed. But sure I’m game with playing him now. At least he has now felt first base under his feet again.
Mac also had what, a 4-5 in NY…. has hit .186 since then. He’s not fixed by any means. Can’t decide to start him now based on 1 game. Still is nice to see him hitting, hope it continues.
“Fransisco has no duty in being part of Friday game vs Cardinals. This guy is worthless. ”
Are You serious? The Dude was Brought in to Platoon…Because of him that Posse at 3rd is amongst the best in the league in overall production, and he takes no chunks out of the payroll
When you start hurling insults and can’t build a case rationally and respectfully, you’ve lost the debate.
Yep, it is an opinion based on various stats and weights. Same thing with Trout and Cabrera.
Sorry. I firmly disagree that “value” is subjective or an opinion. If that were the case, I could argue Jeff Francoeur as the AL MVP. I could point to things like his apparently excellent work ethic, the fact that he seems like a nice guy, etc. as reasons he is the most valuable player. Or I could argue Yunel Escobar is the MVP because I like the way he plays. Perhaps that’s why the MVP choice is often a joke, because the voters actually view it this way, as subjective or as an opinion.
This doesn’t mean most valuable is always clear-cut and there are no serious debates to be had in many cases. In the NL this season, for example, there are a number of fine candidates and a serious debate to be had. But “value” has an objective definition.

Exactly, that is why if Trout or Cabrera wins it would be acceptable. To act as though it is an obvious choice is absurd. All depends on the weighting of various factors. You seem to think making the playoffs isn’t important, others might think it is. You seem to think leading your team down the stretch isn’t important, others might.
But it is hard to be the MVP when you haven’t added the value of making the playoffs to your MVP resume.
