Braves consider roster options for WC game

PITTSBURGH – Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said he might carry 16 position players and nine pitchers on his 25-man roster for Friday’s Wild Card game against the Cardinals, instead of his initial plan of 15 and 10.

He said he might carry a third catcher to give them flexibility to pinch-run early in the game for the catcher, if necessary.

He plans to carry three starting pitchers — Kris Medlen, Tim Hudson, Mike Minor — for the Wild Card game. Hudson would be available to start if anything — i.e. injury or sickness — happened to Medlen, and Minor would be an emergency pitcher if the game became an extra-innings marathon like the 18-inning playoff game the Braves played at Houston in 2005.

The 25-man roster would change for the Division Series if the Braves advance.

A one game roster? Why would this even be a question? How many pitchers do you need for 1 game?

@ reality. If we go into extras who knows. Three starters and six relievers sounds like a good plan to me. How many position players do you think we need 15 or 16 is plenty. Especially when you have mr. Six positions!

Not a bad idea, have YOUR BEST ready to go if there’s an issue with Meds. Shouldn’t be, but you never know.

3 catchers? Do you really want J.C. Boscan taking up one of those spots? I guess with McCann being injured it might be smart, but… hell, I mean between Overbay, Baker and Hinske, especially with Hinseke. There’s not too much upside, so I guess you can give Boscan a spot.

@cig… you know how fredi feels about using his last catcher ever. I like that hes thinking about how he may need to manufacture some runs early by pinch running if necessary!

One option the Braves should consider as they prepare for Friday’s WC game is winning these last two against the Pirates. I know, I know, they don’t mean anything–right? WRONG! It’s called “winning mentality” or a “culture of winning”–something ATL pro teams have ALWAYS struggled to develop/maintain.

The last thing we want to do is limp into Friday’s do-or-die on the heels of a three-game losing streak to a sub-.500 team that won’t even make the playoffs this year.

If you carry JC, you then have the option of also using Mac or Ross as a pinch hitter without the fear of losing your back up catcher.
The bench of Ross, Johnson, and Francisco is obvious, but after that, it will probably be Hinske, Baker, Boscan, Overbay, and Constanza. Not much there scares an opponent at this time.

I like the idea of being overprepared. 3 starters and 3 catchers sounds like that Fredi is looking at all possible scenarios. After all, the loser of this game will be watching the playoffs from a recliner at home. Thing is, nobody knows what is going to happen during the course of the game (rain delay, sickness, injury, extra innings). Fredi has thought this through and if Medlen gets touched up early, look for Hudor Minor to come in early. As enemic as our offense has been, we’ll have to look at manufacturing runs any way we can, and if it means Boscan pinch running then so be it. This will be one game that they will have to give their best errort as a team and leave it all on the field.

Believe Pastornicky makes it over one of the above. He plays SS and has speed as a PR, so I think he makes the team. Constanza makes it because of speed. Obviously, Ross, Johnson. The other 4 are likely to be Boscan, and 3 out of Overbay, Baker, Francisco, and Hinske. If Boscan makes it, Hinske most likely doesn’t.

9 pitchers: Minor, Hudson, and Medlin. Kimbrel, Venters, O’Flahery, Durbin, Avilan, and Gearin. Moylan and Martinez likely don’t make the WC team.

Cards are one out from losing tonight so if that holds and the Dodgers win, then tomorrow night gets very interesting. The Braves would certainly love seeing the Dodgers and Cards play a one-game playoff for the second Wild Card and the winner traveling from Los Angeles to Atlanta the very next night or day for that WC game.

“In case he has to pinch run for a catcher early on in the game”???? So if McCann hits a 3rd inning double he’s going to pinch run for him and put Ross back there? Sooooooo we in effect, lose McCann for the next 6 innings?? Interesting game plan.

Hoping Fredi will give the regulars two or three swings today. Monday until Friday layoff without seeing live pitching is too much. And put me down for Pastornicky over Baker (speed and bat) and Moylan rather than Gearrin. Peter has been there before.

Re: Coach 13

Probably not that scenario. Something more like we are down 3 runs and we’ve got 1st and 2nd with 0 outs and Mccann is at 1st. with a good batter up. That kind of scenario.

Fredi is planning for all possible scenarios which is smart in one game.

Hinske is definitely in even though he’s struggled off the bench this year. He’s one of the better options we’ve got off the bench unfortunately. And he’s had some big hits in playoff games in the past. Remember 2010? The 8th inning 2 run bomb to give us the lead. Turner Field went hysteria. Then Conrad gave it up with 2 errors – glad we’re much improved on defense since that night.

Go BRAVES! :)

We won’t know Friday’s game yet until the AL is decided.

Speculation would say that if the A’s and Orioles play in the WC game (which would mean the Yanks win tonight and clinch the division), then it would seem that the west coast game would be a 4pm start, and the Braves would play at 8 pm on Friday.

If by some craziness, the Yanks fall in the division and assume the WC spot (a LOT would have to happen for that), then we would have the 4pm game on Friday and the Yanks the 8pm game.

A big decision will be whether to start the inferior catcher (McCann) over Ross. Ross is a better hitter and a much better catcher defensively. Ross also calls a much better game.

Metro Coach

McCann will start, mostly because he is the starter, plus Lohse is a righty. Wouldn’t be surprised to see a scenario where the Braves are up 1, down 1, or tied and w/ McCann on base he gets PR for and Ross come in to finish the game. Hopefully McCann can get through his injuries and be a contributor in the playoffs.

I think it would be really cool if Orioles & A’s win divisions and the AL WC was Rangers/Yankees. Friggin Raul Ibanez just had to tie it up last night night in 9th. Rangers pitching Dumpster today so that is reason enough for Braves fans to root for A’s.

If Orioles & Yanks both win, Orioles will host AL WC game no matter what happens out west. Then I would expect Braves/Cards to be primetime late game. If somehow Yankees or Rangers are in the WC game I expect MLB will put them on in primetime.

Gerrin over Moylan for the last pitching spot. If they only carry 9, C. Martinez is out. Overbay over Henske on the bench. Pastornicy over Baker. JC Boscan makes it as 3rd catcher. If 16 position players, Baker makes it
Hope they start Ross over McCann. Love McCann, but do you know what he’s batting since the end of Aug? Horrid! No need to pinch run for him. He won’t get on.
Also hope Fredi doesn’t make a fatal strategic blunder

Cards only lefty starter is Garcia and he pitched Monday and Carpenter yesterday. I have no idea why Cards are indicating Lohse will pitch WC game when Wainwright and Lynn would be available on normal rest. Granted Lohse has had a nice rebound year but I would think they would be more comfortable with Wainwright in a win or go home game. Then he could backup his talk. It is as if Cards are looking past Braves to have NLDS rotation setup. Have they not heard Braves have not lost the past 23 games Medlen has started? 2 runs could probably be enough to advance.

The MLB channel is getting just as bad as ESPN. It’s American League all the time now. Most of that usually the Yankees. Every time I turn over to MLB or ESPN last night or this AM they are on the AL. What gives? ESPN has always been bad and with their nature and location it’s expected, but MLB is supposed to be neutral and showed both the NL and AL equally. Don’t get it.

Sadly I am feeling we are going to be one and done too, do not know why just have a bad feeling. A part of me feels like Turner Field has always been bad for us in the playoffs. Compared to Fulton-County where we had “Magic” the Ted feels like always a sad place during October baseball.
