If your the Braves, I think you want the Cards to throw Lohse. We have over 100 combined ABs against each of their top 4 starters, and over 160 for him, Carpenter, and Wainwright. In fact, the Braves have the most ABs against Lohse. They’ve combined for a .320 avg. against Lohse, it’s under .270 for every other pitcher.

One observation. Lately, Fredi has been giving Overbay & Baker almost every pinch hitting opp he could give when not giving it to Hinske. Juan Francisco has been invisible this month. Either Juan has been eating way too much, or he is deep in the doghouse. Just been a zero.

Well, here’s hoping that Medlen breaks the record tomorrow in grand style. Couldn’t happen to a nicer dude, to say nothing of a very nice series win.

Since mid-June, Braves pitching has been nothing short of remarkable and amazing. Absolutely awesome!

It’s really unbelievable to watch what the O’s and A’s have done this season.

Who would have picked either team to finish the season with a winning record let alone 90 plus wins?

It’s really disappointing to see how many teams each year, with seemingly nothing in their favor, so frequently shatter expectation like the O’s and A’s, the Nationals and consistently the Rays.

And yet the Braves are never better than what they are easily capable of and show no signs of evolving.

If you’ve seen them in person up close, and tonight in particular, you have ample evidence their offense is non-competitive and incapable.

You cannot score three runs in two games against Mets pitching on the eve of the playoffs.

Craig Kimbrel should not be making stress pitches at this point because Braves batters can’t do their jobs.

They’ve completely blown opportunity after opportunity to catch the Nats.

The fact that they were criticized for once by the media for celebrating a playoff clinching win and not for falling short of a division title for the seventh consecutive season says it all.

They should just admit defeat and do everything possible to prepare for the Cardinals and a game they will not win unless Kris Medlen is perfect.

Let’s get the win today, and see what happens. My guess is the NATS clinch today, but we should keep the pressure on them.

However under ANY circumstance, I would not let MEDS pitch beyond 80, unless he’s in the ninth. In fact, if it were not for the consecutive win record, I would give him a day off. He’s wearing down late in games his last two starts it seems to me. I don’t want a tired arm going into the play-in game.

KIMBREL should be ready to go, but if we’re out of the division race, I would not use him consistantly, game-in game-out.

BTW, I said the NATS would be the team we needed to beat like a tom-tom this season. Anybody care to guess where we’d be right now with the season’s record between us reversed?

So how good are the BRAVES? They addressed their need for a leadoff hitter by acquiring one of the best in the game, Marquis Grissom, from the Expos. The pitching staff, anchored by three-time Cy Young winner Greg Maddux, appears to be as formidable as ever (now that Maddux is over the chicken pox). And sluggers Fred McGriff (34 homers in 1994), David Justice (19) and Ryan Klesko (17) seem ready to pick up where they left off. The only significant loss from ‘94 is third baseman Terry Pendleton, who signed with the Florida Marlins as a free agent. But taking Pendleton’s spot is rookie Chipper Jones, a player whom Atlanta manager Bobby Cox considers “the best athlete on the team.”

Jones, the No. 1 pick in the 1990 amateur draft, was a star shortstop in the minor leagues. With Jeff Blauser manning that position for the Braves, Jones was moved to leftfield last spring to get his bat (.325 and 13 home runs in Triple A in ‘93) into the lineup. But less than three weeks before the ‘94 season opener, Jones tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and was sidelined for the year.

“I’m flattered that every time there’s a position open, I’m put in the mix.” says Jones, who last played third base nine years ago—in the Babe Ruth League. “I feel I can play all seven positions behind the pitcher; I have speed, a good arm and good range. Third base is more of a reaction position. I might be better at it. At Shortstop, the more I think, the more trouble I get into.”

Washington clinches the NL East today with a win or a loss by the Braves. Over in the AL, still no team has clinched even a playoff spot, but several are close. In fact, it’s possible today that all AL playoff teams except the AL Central winner will have clinched a spot.

Texas clinches today by beating the Angels in either one of their two double-header games. New York and Baltimore are now tied atop the AL East, and that one’s going down to the wire. Either one of them would clinch a playoff spot today with a win and a loss by the Angels. Or they both would clinch if Texas sweeps the double header from the Angels. Finally, Oakland would clinch a playoff spot with a win and a sweep by Texas.
Also of note: Texas would clinch the AL West with a sweep and a loss by Oakland.

Got all that? Here are the updated magic numbers:

NL East – Washington – 1
NL Central – Cincinnati – clinched
NL West – San Francisco – clinched

NL Playoffs (relative to Los Angeles)
Washington – clinched
Cincinnati – clinched
San Francisco – clinched
Atlanta – clinched
St. Louis – 3

NL #1 seed – Washington – 3 (relative to Cincinnati)
NL #1 wild card – Atlanta – clinched

AL East – New York/Baltimore – 5
AL Central – Detroit – 3
AL West – Texas – 3

AL Playoffs (relative to Los Angeles)
Texas – 1
New York – 2
Baltimore – 2
Oakland – 3
Detroit – 3 (relative to Chicago for division)

AL #1 seed – Texas – 4
AL #1 wild card – New York/Baltimore – 4

The only elimination that happened yesterday was Detroit being eliminated from AL wild card contention. As we’ve suspected for a while, they now officially only have hope of winning the AL Central. They do have control there.

Milwaukee is finally eliminated if they lose today, or if St. Louis wins. Tampa Bay would be eliminated from the playoffs today with a loss and a win by Oakland. The Angels would be eliminated with 2 double-header losses and a win by Oakland.

Here are the updated elimination numbers:

NL Playoffs (relative to St. Louis)
Los Angeles – 3
Milwaukee – 1

AL Playoffs (relative to Oakland)
Los Angeles – 3
Chicago – 3 (relative to Detroit for division)
Tampa Bay – 2

Brian from SC

For Oakland to clinch a playoff spot today they need a win, 2 losses by the Angels, AND a loss by Tampa Bay.

Stop it. Stop it. Stop it. Think about something else.

October 16, 1995, SI, Tim Kurkjian.

Jones ended the [NLDS] series batting .389 with four RBIs and three standout defensive plays, despite playing with a sore left knee and an aching back.

It was a performance that was in keeping with his regular season, for which he should be awarded National League Rookie of the Year honors next month. Hitting third most of the season, Jones belted 23 homers and drove in 86 runs. “Every time I see him he impresses me more,” says Rocky shortstop Walt Weiss.

GET up!! This is it. Last day. Last day at Turner. Tribute time…

October 4, 1999, Tom Verducci.

On the first day of spring training this year in Kissimmee, Fla., Don Baylor, the new Atlanta Braves hitting coach, introduced himself to switch-hitting third baseman Chipper Jones the way a double espresso does to your synapses first thing in the morning. “Tell me your philosophy of hitting,” Baylor said.

“Have good at bats, hit .300 from both sides of the plate and get runners in from scoring position,” Jones, a three-time All-Star, said proudly.

“Bulls—-,” Baylor barked. “You hit third for the best team in the National League, and I expect you to drive the ball out of the park.”

So much for “Howdy” and a firm handshake. Later, when a lefthanded batting practice pitcher didn’t show, Jones left the cage after hitting left-handed. “Hey,” Baylor said, “where do you think you’re going? You aren’t leaving until you hit righthanded.”

That night Jones went to his parents’ home in Pierson, about a hundred miles from Kissimmee, walked in and announced, practically before the door had closed behind him, “The worm has turned, Dad. The worm has turned.”

Thus began a season of change and growth for Jones, 27, who knew he was in for a lesson in plate tectonics.

And this is why a one game play in game makes for everyone to be very nervous, or should be.

Who can leave out the toes? July 11, 2005…

Chipper Jones, Atlanta’s third baseman and mainstay slugger, went on the disabled list with an injured toe ligament on June 6. Five days later the Braves’ second Jones for the past nine seasons metamorphosed into the Second Coming–in a metaphoric way, of course. From June 11 through last Sunday and despite hitting virtually naked in the lineup, he did not go more than 13 at bats without a home run. In 22 games he had 14 homers, 30 RBIs, a .329 batting average and a mere 13 strikeouts in 98 plate appearances. He was leading the majors in homers, with 26, which helped earn the 28-year-old Jones his fourth All-Star Game appearance

Murray Chass, September 24, 1999. LA rry LA rry…

The main question raised by Jones’s one-man onslaught was about the wisdom the Mets displayed in continuing to challenge Jones instead of telling him to pass the batter’s box and go directly from the on-deck circle to first base without collecting $200, or a playoff share.

”That’s easy to say now,” Dave Wallace, the Mets’ pitching coach, said.

Walk Chipper Jones? Not me, said Orel Hershiser, who threw the home run pitch in Wednesday night’s game. ”That was very early in the game,” Hershiser said of the first-inning, first-base-open situation. ”It’s not the time you win or lose games.”

Walk Chipper Jones? Not me, said Al Leiter, who threw yesterday’s home run pitch. ”I’m not going to walk him unless someone tells me to walk him to load the bases,” Leiter said.

“Anybody who has hit .400 for this long will tell you that you don’t hit this well without a little bit of luck,” Jones said. “That being said, I’m no Ted Williams.”

For now, he is. Jones is batting .409, after going 0 for 3 on Saturday, a number that put him in a different stratosphere from every other major leaguer. Jones has always been a productive switch-hitter, a player with such a sweet swing that teammates gush about it the way they gush about a signing bonus. Craig Kimbrel is holding opponents to a .124 avg, the lowest since 1900. His .357 OPS is the lowest in the Expansion Era. #Braves

Kimbrel for Cy Young!!!

and we had to walk ten miles to school every day in the sleet and snow…uphill both ways

Nowadays there’s bus stops at adjacent driveways….it’s pretty annoying

Starting pitchers finished a lot more of what they started and it did not hurt them, Managers had a longer bench to work with. BTW nolie have you read any if LEE CHILDS books? He is very good.

And no iPod, either. Only the sound of sockless feet, crunching in the knee deep snow, sliding across the frozen creek.

Uggla hitting .291/.387/.456/.843 this month, with only 2 HR and 7 doubles though…. 13 RBI, and 13 BB vs. 16 Ks. He needs 1 more HR to have 7 consecutive seasons of 20+ HR

Here’s where I can’t participate anymore. I went to school with a CD player. And thought I was hot stuff with it too.

From Twitter… ‏@JimBowdenESPNxm Schuerholz just told us that Chipper Jones is going to take year off but knows when he wants to put the uniform back on he knows who to call

That is very good news. I thought they would offer him something. I would kind of like to see him in TV booth, he speaks well.

truth is that when I went to school there were no shorts, no jeans, no collarless shirts, and no appliances of any kind other than a slide rule.

Well, the Cards got the best of us in 82, and they took us handily in an NLDS early in the last decade, so reflecting on the 82 Braves team is bad karma.

Back in the mid-90’s, we stole one from the Cards on a way to a WS berth. THAT is what I’d rather focus on. That, and Medlen twirling a sparkling gem against those pretenders from the Midwest next Friday.

I am gonna take the afternoon OFF, don my real-deal (not actual, just authentic) Dale Murphy road jersey and matching cap, get my food and drink ON, and watch the Braves send the Cards to Hell.

Yup I am just finishing his newest. Did you know Lee is a very big baseball fan?, that is part of the reason he moved to this country.
