Series preview: vs. Mets

When (TV): 7:35 p.m. Friday (WPCH), 7:10 p.m. Saturday (WPCH), 1:35 p.m. Sunday (FSSO)

Radio: 680, 93.7, 100.5

Probable starting pitchers:

Friday: Braves RH Tim Hudson (16-6, 3.61 ERA) vs. LH Jonathon Niese (12-9, 3.49)

Saturday: Braves LH Mike Minor (10-10, 4.27) vs. RH Chris Young (4-8, 4.21)

Sunday: Braves RH Kris Medlen (9-1, 1.64) vs. RH Jenrry Mejia (1-1, 4.91)

About the Braves:

Batting: The weekend’s honoree Chipper Jones has hit .311 with 46 doubles, four triples, 49 HRs and 159 RBIs in his career against the Mets. Martin Prado was leading the National League with 59 multi-hit games entering Thursday. He was batting .353 (30-for-85) in 22 games in September to raise his season average to .306. Brian McCann went 5-for-9 with two home runs and six RBIs in two games against the Mets in New York Sept. 8-9.

Pitching: Hudson is trying to reach 17 wins for the second time in three seasons. He is coming off a dominant outing at Citizens Bank Park in which he gave up only one unearned run on two hits in 7 1/3 innings of a 2-1 win. The Braves are gunning for a 23rd straight win behind Medlen on Sunday, which would give him the longest such streak in the live ball era (since 1920), breaking a tie with Carl Hubbell and Whitey Ford.

Miscellaneous: The Braves reached 90 wins on Wednesday night, their 26th 90-win season in franchise history and 15th in the past 22 years. They lead the season series with the Mets 10-5, including 5-1 at Turner Field.

About the Mets:

Batting: The Mets have scored six runs in each of their past four games. Ruben Tejada is on a nine-game hitting streak, batting .417 (15-for-36) over that span with one double, three RBIs and two steals. Ike Davis hit his 31st home run on Thursday against the Pirates, his 19th since the All-Star break. Daniel Murphy is hitting .346 (28-for-81) in September with five doubles, two home runs and 12 RBIs.

Pitching: The Braves miss recent 20-game winner R.A. Dickey, the knuckleballer and NL Cy Young candidate, for a third straight series. Niese is 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA in three starts against the Braves this year, allowing only five earned runs in 20 innings. He has made seven straight quality starts, going 4-3 with a 2.51 ERA.

Miscellaneous: The Mets have won six of their past seven games. Third baseman David Wright became the Mets’ all-time leading hitter on Wednesday with his 1,419th career hit. He added two more Thursday for his third straight multi-hit game.

The Mets exceeded expectations for about 5 weeks, then reality set in, and alas, they were once again, just the Mets. GO BRAVES!
