Jones defends champagne celebration; Cox’s advice for Gonzalez

One thing that got Jones riled up Wednesday morning, he said, was hearing the Braves criticized on a local radio station for their champagne celebration after clinching a berth in the wild card playoff game. He made no apologies.

“If our season ends on October 5, we got to celebrate and that’s something these guys haven’t gotten to do,” Jones said of his younger teammates. “Why take it away from us? Every time we advance, you know what? We’re going to celebrate whether you like it or not, whether it’s apropos or not, we’ve earned it. And quite frankly we can afford to pop a top on some champagne bottles and some beer cans if we want to.”

The last man standing from the 14 consecutive division titles remembers the criticisms Bobby Cox-led teams took for being too buttoned-down and reserved.

“We finally let our hair down and we still get bad-mouthed, so what’s it going to be?” Jones said. “Make up your mind.”

Cox advice

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said he tossed and turned Tuesday night, first in excitement over the Braves playoff-clinching victory, and then concern over how to keep his roster healthy the rest of the regular season.

A conversation Wednesday morning with former Braves manager Bobby Cox helped put his mind at ease.

“He goes you know what? Don’t worry about that,” Gonzalez said. “With the injury stuff, you can’t help it….You can’t put them in a bubble. You’ve got to play them. He goes, ‘Enjoy it.’”

Gonzalez would like to get bench players Lyle Overbay, Eric Hinske, Reed Johnson and Jeff Baker more at-bats in the final eight games but will keep playing his lineup straight for the next few days as the Braves continue to try to make a dent in the Nationals’ lead in the NL East.

Would probably be John Kincaide. He’s an unabashed Phillies fan and a loudmouth know-it-all arse. I turn off 680 between 12 and 3, they’re just terrible.

I know it wasn’t the afternoon drive guys, they said the same thing that Glav, Chip, and Joe just said on the TV broadcast. To wit: Sure, we as fans have seen it before, but 18 of those guys hadn’t ever been there, and pop another bottle boys, you earned it.

These guys worked hard and deserve to celebrate their postseason clinch. I know John was referencing the fact that he’s worried they’ll be satisfied only by clinching. They won’t be, they’re going for it, but they ARE celebrating because it’s almost therapeutic, and gets a huge monkey off this team’s back, and they’re doing something that only five teams in a league of 16 can do, and that’s make the playoffs. That’s a great accomplishment. They aren’t happy, but still very hungry.

Each person has an opinion, and if Kincaid or Kincade expresses his and it differs from yours what is the fuss all about? I too thought they should try and catch the Nats then celebrate, and celebrate again when they win the NLCS, because I believe these are goals they can achieve. I had picked this team to win 96 games at the start of the season and though it seems unlikely it is still possible. But then again I picked them to win the division last year and we all saw how that worked out.
I was not in favor of the wild card celebration, but I later realize that several of the guys had never been to the post season. However please remember that this years wild card could just be one and done, not like in previous years when there was only one wild card team.

I listen to their show because of the Braves, not because I’m enamoured over one of their personalities.

We’re about to have 3 talk sports stations in the area. Some very smart people make these programming decisions. If the talk stations depended on my listernership, two of them would go out of business right away an the other would be teetering on the brink. FG needs to keep the regulars in for as much as possible. I think that’s one of the reasons the 90s teams usually saw some early exits …. they would clinch the Division early in September, rest players and have a hard time getting hot again once the playoffs started and would get booted by a team who was fighting up until almost the end in order to get in

“Gonzalez would like to get (the horrible bench and) Reed Johnson more at-bats in the final eight games”

Putting Ross/Reed in for a few games to give Mac/Bourn some extra rest, maybe some spot starts for Juan Fran at 3rd for Chipper would be fine but just don’t go all out Team B once you know what’s happening with the division

Amazing. The first time a single negative or derisive comment has been made by the Atlanta media regarding the Atlanta Braves that’s actually about the Braves!

That’s a piece of history right there, folks.

Do they ever talk about the lack of post-season series victories over the last eleven years?

Has a sports radio host in this town expressed the slightest degree of dismay over the Washington Nationals ascending to the very top of the division from the deepest of cellars ever this season?

No. Why would they? There was a controversial ending to a football game Monday night that took place on the other side of the continent!

Clearly more important than Chipper Jones’ Braves.

Then all of a sudden, after Chuck Oliver has just completed five consecutive hours of Conference USA analysis, they’re all surprised nobody in this cares about baseball.

And when John Kincade is not making jokes about meager crowds on Monday nights, he’s excoriating the dozens and dozens of parents waiting in line for autographs with their kids at the Braves caravans in February on a school day.

So for once, we’re not being ridiculed and criticized and blamed for all that ails the team.

Forget what the A’s and O’s are doing… winning with cast-offs and non-existent payroll… or what the Rays have done for four years now with an empty stadium every Saturday night.

The only way the Braves could possibly be capable of competing is for you fans to do your job and sell out Turner Field on a nightly basis.

Otherwise, don’t complain that big name free agents don’t want to come here.

But considering how universally forgiving the Atlanta media is for the organization’s many failures and disappointments in the last ten years and how bereft we are of championships always, the only argument that could reasonably be made is if they didn’t or hadn’t celebrated enough.

They won the game on a walk-off home run.

We’ve seen only four such game winning hits in two years.

It’s worthy of a celebration whether it preserves a playoff spot or not.

I’m as disgruntled and haterish as it gets. It was worth it.

I want and hope to see it happen again. I want to be a part of it.

F 680 the fan and 790.

They f’ing blow. They all think they’re f*ing big shots… in one of the most disappointing, loser sports cities in America.

Perry Laurentino, Matt Chernoff, John Kincade, Steak Shapiro, Two Live Stews, etc. **** **** for a living.

Mitchell

There was not one soul in the Atlanta media who dared to point a finger at Bobby Cox for the NLDS against the Giants and for leaving Brooks Conrad at second base in the 9th inning of Game 3 after we had just taken a lead.

Not one. The people who called in to radio shows and rightly blamed him for losing the game were yelled off the air.

The lone defense any one of them could make was “Who are you going to put in there, Diory Hernandez?”

Christian Martinez would have been a better choice at that point than Brooks Conrad given how extensively well documented his defensive blunders had become.

The real journalists in the real media were not deterred by sworn loyalty and eternal deference from reporting the truth: That not replacing Conrad cost us the game and the series.

But why remember his countless late-inning heroics that got the Braves to the post-season and were seen even in his first at-bat with the team the year before on a pinch hit three run home run against the Nationals that won the game when it’s so much easier to throw him under the bus alone to protect Bobby Cox, the infallible?

It was also Bobby Cox who took Craig Kimbrel out of the game and replaced him with Mike Dunn to face a left-handed batter. What followed was Dunn blowing the game, giving up the run that made the score tied and handed the Giants all the momentum they would need.

It was a collective circus of failure orchestrated by Bobby Cox but any time the 2010 playoffs are even mentioned it’s “blame it on Brooks” and move on.

Brooks Conrad’s obituary is going to be in the New York Times fifty years from now for letting a ball go through his legs in a playoff game because his idiot manager (who was NEVER criticized in his entire career in Atlanta) left him in to play the 9th inning when anyone with the least bit of knowledge or awareness would have known better.

Fans get criticized. Indefensible journeymen bench players they criticize.

The manager who lost four World Series in nine years.

Not once.

Ok, so here we are….again! Braves have yet another opportunity for a shot at the World Series and are playing out the end of the regular season against the scrubs of our devision. ONE thing from this season that should be front and center of everyones mind now, is that the Braves CAN’T beat the teams that they will be playing, IF they find a way to win the one-game play-in, which should be a mission that they can complete. but then again, DON’T count on it…WOW, can’t believe this team actually celebrated, with champainge, the right to become the fist team to be eliminated during the tourney to advance towards a Series Championship!! Un-REAL… What is the season record against the Cards, Brewers, Giants, Nats? Pathetic…waste of money to and emotions to root for this team.

Anyway, for those of us that do….give’m hell…o!

Kincade is a legend in his own mind – the sound of his voice makes me sick to my stomach – I even know a friend of his from Philly and he thinks the guy’s a schmuck!

It is a shame that the Braves are on 680 – the station doesn’t have the chops (no pun intended) to carry a professional franchise of any type on it’s airwaves – hopefully the Braves will avoid that mistake again when the contract is over and award it to 790 or back to WSB where it belongs, if only because of the strength of it’s AM signal.

Now all you Bobby Cox and Chipper Jones haters will have to find someone else to hate on when Chipper’s gone, and I’m sure you will – y’all must be really fun to live with – I pity your poor wives (that is if you have ‘em), or are you living in your mom’s basement???????? HMMMMMMMM?

Agree with Chipper Jones’ comments. There are a lot of young guys on the team and this is their first time earning a spot in the post season. What in the world is wrong with a clubhouse celebration – especially after a dramatic win? The post season is the post season. Not the Braves fault they have to play through a Wild Card elimination game.

The Braves have a terrific record and should be proud of what they’ve accomplished so far.

Having said that, Chipper Jones again proves he’s a complete doofus when it comes to PR. Do we really need to be reminded that ball players make a lot of money (”…quite frankly we can afford to pop a top on some champagne bottles and some beer cans if we want to.”).

That’s a pretty silly and juvenile response coming from a 40 year old man.

But that’s Chipper Jones. Graced with a breathtaking swing and blessed with more God-given baseball talent than just about anybody you can name.

But he’s a bit empty between the ears still.

From what I’m gathering here from the comments, 680 The Fan made the criticisms of the Braves’ Tuesday night celebration? You’re kidding me! They’re one of the flagship stations in the Braves Radio Network!! This is why I wish WSB Radio still carried Braves’ games! And to think I had started listening to 680 during my evening drive-time commutes. That MIGHT just begin changing now.

Chipper’s right! CELEBRATE!!! It was a hard-earned achievement. And they achieved their first goal to get a playoff spot. Now they’re trying to see if they can change the outcome of the NL East division final standings or not. The naysayers always have to complain about something. DON’T listen to them!

I was there Tuesday and I didn’t want to leave. I wanted to party too. We get so few times in life where we take time to celebrate. Criticising the celebration for making the playoffs is ridiculous. They are a great team, they’ve dealt with adversity all year and they are going to the playoffs. There is no luck involved here. It doesn’t mean they aren’t trying to win the division or anything larger. They are just taking time to recognise achievements accomplished, they washed off last year in an ocean of champagne.

Now go win the Division, the League and the Series!

Kincaid, ever wonder why so many of Atlanta’s sports-talk radio personalities are from the north? I’ll bet you think it’s because you’re better talkers than we southerners are.

Well keep talking, big-mouth. You may be better at talking about sports, but southerners are better at playing them.

The SEC absolutely RULES college football.

Ever notice how many professional baseball players came from the south?

On the Braves alone, Heyward, McCann and Ross are from Georgia, Chipper and Pastornicky are from Florida, Hudson and Kimbrell are from Alabama, Sheets is from Louisiana, Bourn is from Texas, Maholm is from Mississippi, Uggla and Venters are from Kentucky, and Minor and Gearrin are from Tennessee.

None of the Braves except Varvaro (NJ) are from the northeast. None are from Pennsylvania.

None of the Phillies are from the northeast, either, except Kratz (PA).

Southerners play ball. Northeasterners talk about it. No questions asked.

Great job managing, Fredi. Let ‘er rip in the post-season. I expect this will be the first of many post-season appearances for teams you manage. This year you managed the pitching superbly, allowed Heyward to rebound and Freeman to grow, made Chipper your partner in the clubhouse, managed the shortstop situation deftly, got some good miles out of Sheets, brought Medlen along nicely, kept the pressure off of Uggla (HE OWES YOU ONE!) and weathered McCann’s slide. Braves Fan 1963 – I bet if we could look behind the computer screen and view the lives of these posters who judge everything in a negative manner, you will find a large number of people who are struggling with their own personal failures. Rather than take some personal responsibility, these people would rather drag others down with there negative judgments. I could be wrong.

Lets put this in prespective, the Braves are only ahead of three other teams to make payoffs.
In college two teams out of 120 or so make the playoff.

I can’t believe anyone is giving the Braves grief for celebrating. Good grief, this may be the only opportunity they get to celebrate this season. And whether you like Chipper or not, he has been with the Braves for his entire career. That kind of loyalty isn’t seen too often in sports anymore and I, for one, applaud it.

What’s almost as sweet as the Braves getting into the wildcard, is that it was the Braves beating the Phillies almost every game this season that precisely put Philly OUT of the wildcard. Braves win, and Braves ensure the Phillies brief, oh-so-very-brief, playoff run is OVER. sweeeeeeeeeet!

Always been a big Chipper fan. Chipper’s comments on the MORONS.. Dead On! It is very apparent that these idiots have never played the game, for that matter, any competitive sports. It hurts like hell, in your heart when you lose, and it is utter joy when you win something like this. Keep the celebrations going!!! Way to go Chipper!!
