Braves postgame quotes after Wednesday’s win vs. Marlins

PAUL MAHOLM

On wanting to continue the momentum from Tuesday night:

“Yeah, obviously we’ve clinched a spot in the playoffs but we’ve still got some work to do to keep moving up. our goal is still for the division. We know it’s going to be tough but we’ve got to come in and play hard for the rest of the seven games and for me, I had a little over a week off, so I’m trying to make sure I’m sharp enough. Going out there the first few innings were trying to find the rhythm and get back into it. And going out for the third I felt like I found my rhythm and was able to pretty much throw every pitch for a strike.”

On last couple starts put him in a good frame going into playoffs:

“Yeah you can look at it, I had two out of three good starts, and then the start before I had two out of three bad starts. So for me, it comes down to executing pitches. I’m not going to blow it by anybody. I’m not going to go out there with stuff, where I’m going to strike out a bunch of guys. I’ve got to go out there and pitch, I’ve got to go out there and execute my pitches and mix speeds and get ahead and get ground balls and keep the defense going. Tonight I felt comfortable and obviously with Prads getting the first inning homer, that helps you out going out there. You’re able to relax a little bit more. You want to be able to pitch well going into the playoffs and obviously I’ve never been in this position in my career, so I tried to do as much as I could to treat it like a playoff game to where I’m going to go out there and I’m going to win the game and try and set the tone. The defense made some plays and obviously putting up some runs helps.”

On how it feels to pitch in meaningful games this last week, and walk off to ovation:

“It’s awesome. Obviously this is what you play for. You want to play in October, you want to play in the postseason. Obviously clinching last night and getting in the playoffs and coming out tonight and playing a good game and getting a win, it’s fun. When you’re on teams that have 90-plus losses obviously you’re wanting to go out there and win every start but you’re kind of in shutdown mode. You’ve got offseason plans. You’ve got other things. It’s fun to come to the park and know that there’s an added pressure to try and win and do things and make sure you’re prepared and you’re ready to go day in and day out.”

On what he thought when he saw squeeze sign:

“Don’t screw it up. Obviously the ball was way out of the zone. As a pitcher you’re taught just to do whatever you can to get the bat on it. I tried to go one-hand just trying to get it up there and get to it, but luckily I didn’t foul it off and it went to the backstop and we scored. Squeezes, it’s not like it’s the most pressure-packed situation but you don’t want to screw it up. You don’t want to look like a fool up there.”

On what last night was like for Maholm:

“It was awesome. As a player I’ve never played against a team that’s won on our field or gotten to celebrate. But in the offseason you’ve gotten to watch people do the champagne and do everything. That’s something you want to do in your career and hopefully it’s the first of a few for us this season. It was fun. We didn’t celebrate too much. We enjoyed the moment and came back out and we’re still playing for something. We’re still going to try and keep creeping up the division and see where we go.”

MARTIN PRADO

On the win:

“The way we’re playing right now, we’ve just got to keep going, all the way to the end and don’t forget that it took a long time. it’s been a long season and the way we’ve been playing is pretty consistent. So we’re just trying to finish strong and win as many games as we can win from now on. I like our chances though and the way that our pitchers and everybody has been playing. It’s good to see that at this point we’ve got a pretty good chance.”

On using some of Johnson’s power:

“He’s always a tough contender. I’m glad I didn’t swing at the slider before that pitch and I could put a good swing on that fastball in. I didn’t know that I hit it out but fortunately for me and for my team, it was huge in that first inning to get that run. Paul was great, and he used that run to deal all game and got the win.”

On if saw Constanza score:

“I saw that and I saw the replay and I saw when we went back out there and I saw he had dirt here. I was like ‘you dove like (to) a bag. Dirt on the back of his shoulder. Guys were like ‘he almost hit his face on the ground.’ But that’s the way we’re playing. Everybody is contributing. Everybody is playing hard, and that’s all that matters.”

On if anybody tried to come after him with dirt today:

“No I escaped that. Don’t say that too loud.”

On if people watching Nats game:

“You know, that’s what I like about this team. You see everybody just relax and they’re probably just thinking about tomorrow, not thinking who’s playing who.”

FREDI GONZALEZ

On Maholm:

“He did a nice job. He gave us 6 2/3 pretty good innings there and mixed his pitches well. He got himself in a pretty good flow there the middle innings and just kept going mixing up pitches and did a nice job. Durbin came in with a big out there in the seventh and O’Flaherty and Kimbrel did a heck of a job. The only offense was Prado really. Solo home run and an RBI single and we snuck one in there with a squeeze was just a wild pitch…Stolen base? OK.”

On four strikeouts for Kimbrel:

“That’s not something we should be proud of. It’s a tough pitch in the dirt but nevertheless he got out of that jam.”

On how much watching other scores:

“I still think you still watch. We came in here and it was first and third and two outs and Frandsen at the plate and Clippard, so we were watching. And he punched him out. It’s a fun part of the year….It’s going to be a difficult task (to win the division) but it could be done. We need some help. We’ve just got to win, take care of ourselves and win and see what happens.”

On way team responding coming back in after last night:

“Yeah but that didn’t bother me. I think there’s still something to be played for and they know that. With Paul going, I knew we were going to get a good performance.”

On if McCann OK, he swung funny:

“Mac is beat up. he’s got a shoulder thing. he’s got the knee. Maybe we’ll give him a breather here in the next couple days and get him recharged again. He’s beat up but this is the time of year where we’ll rest in the offseason. We’ll rest when we don’t have any more games left.”

On went for Maholm because he was up over 100 pitches:

“It was 100 in the seventh. the first couple innings for both sides, both pitchers cranked up some serious pitch counts. In the fourth inning, JJ had 80 something and Paulie had in the 80s. Both pitchers labored a little bit and they both settled down and got deep in the ball game.”

Paulie?? Makes me think of that less than mediocre, non-funny actor (Shore). Why can’t we have more respectable nicknames for Braves players…!?!!! At least give Maholm credit for calling Prado “Prads” instead of the expected “Pradi” or “Martini”. But, Maholm’s not been with the Braves long enough to conform to the standard list of Braves nicknames with the required “eee” sound at the end.

Of course, this brings up the point — how did Chipper avoid being “Chippy” or “Jonesy”..?

BUT, if the Braves can WIN the World Series with kindergarten-level nicknames, it’s totally OK….!!!

Just when you think Kimbrel can absolutely not get any better – he strikes out 4 batters in one inning!

I appreciate Brian McCann’s career with the Braves, but he is absolutely an albatross around an offense trying to get started, and is scarcely better at defense. Bases loaded with 1 out, what does he do? Not even a fly ball to get at least 1 run in. He strikes out.

If he is injured, damn I wish he would just go on the DL. Bring up the kid and rotate him with Ross. The announcers keep saying we need Mac.

I say we need Mac to SIT . . .

All this crap about “THE CELEBRATION”, give it a break. After last season, and doing what they have done this year, they needed to put an end to the bad taste left in many mouths. For Freeman to do the complete opposite, a walk off, two run homer, instead of hitting into game ending double play, let the corks pop. How many other teams would love to be in our cleats today. Enjoy the ride.

As for iggy, I think he use to be Philly Phanatic, now all he has to hang onto is Mike!! I’d hang my head too.

Let’s dig a little deeper. Do you consider yourself a Braves’ fan? What is the reasoning behind all your negative troll-like postings? You do realize that several Wild Card teams in the past have gone onto winning the World Series. I just want to understand why you want to make yourself appear to be a troll.

Iggy – It is not a matter of believing. It actually has happened that Wild Card teams have won many past World Series. So, why are you so convinced the Braves cannot win this year’s World Series?

Brian McCann needs to be sat down,he could not make the throw to first base last night becauseof his shoulder. His offense is not good enough to offset his bad defense.Uggla has to sit also,he’s back to his old ways.

I’m happy to be heading back to the playoffs. It’s appropriate for Chipper’s last season. I’ll ignore the idiotic Iggy. There was a nice piece on Yahoo today about Chipper’s ranking among switch hitters. It’s pretty good particularly coming from a non-Braves fan.
