I would draw the line at like 8-9 million right now for those free agency years. No way I’m going higher than that right now for a guy who hasn’t thrown 180 inning at the big league level – which is probably why an agreement will not be reached.

I’ll be in a car driving down to Philly for a Rehersal Dinner on Friday night, October 5th. Friggin brutal.

As the father of a PeeWee Football Cheerleader, I’ll be at the homecoming parade that afternoon. I’m praying the Braves get the prime-time slot, because I doubt I’ll be able to hear Jim Powell on the MLB At-Bat App over all of the ruckus that afternoon.

I’ll even add an extra million to each year….

2013: $3M 2014: $5M 2015: $7M 2016: $7M 2017: $8M club option ($1M buyout)

Four years, $23 million. Five years, $30 million if the option is exercised.

I’m thinking that total amount makes sense, but I’d expect the distribution to be a bit different:

2013: $2M 2014: $4M 2015: $6.5M 2016: $8.5M 2017: $10M club option ($1.5M buyout)

Four years, $22.5 (with buyout). Five years, $31 with option exercised.

The reality is, when one is making millions of dollars – period – that if it’s taken care of, there’s no need to “make it back” at some point…..

You think? A kid such as Medlen will probably live another 60 years. That’s several economic cycles, which may or may not be kind to any investments made with his money or to businesses he may have founded with his money. There are only about a gazillion ways you can fail to protect assets, and the longer the time-frame of protection sought, the more likely the protections will fail.

but whenever I think that I have to remind myself that it doesn’t make him any better for getting an extra 4/5 HR at this point

Nonsense. It makes him 4 or 5 HR better. ( :

… the nice round numbers and the proximity to certifiable HOF hurdles, I believe, will push him over the top with any BWAA voters who a) don’t hold the line of no-first-ballot-players yet b) look for certain career thresholds to be achieved. I call ‘em swing voters.

And lastly, it is hardly true of a “lot of people.” It is true of truly great players. But a lot of people would never hit 500HR in the majors over a 20 year span. It just isn’t easy to do, even if healthy for 20 years.

Get used to seeing Constanza in CF…if we can’t re-sign Bourn, I have a feeling Constanza will replace him there. Of course, Heyward could move over and Constanza could take RF or LF. That’s why, as great as it would be to win the division, if there is a chance at a tie after 162 games (for THAT one-game playoff) you really have to consider exactly WHO you would start in that game, which is not the do-or-die game. I assume that game would have the expanded, September rosters, which could impact strategy.

I could probably guess 6 of the 7 relievers and then the final spot would either go down to Gearrin or Moylan I would imagine….

So that would be Avilan, Durbin, Kimbrel, Martinez, O’Flaherty, and Venters….

Then I would guess the 3 starters would be Medlen, Huddy, and Minor…but like I said, thats a HUGE guess….I would think Maholm would be unavailable as he is scheduled to throw in the final series and more than likely will…..(as Hanson may throw in PIT as well)

For the position players….

McCann
Ross
Freeman
Uggla
Simmons
Jones
Prado
Bourn
Heyward
Johnson
Pastornicky
Francisco
Constanza
Baker (only because he’s another RH bat)
Hinske (only because he hasnt stunk quite as bad as Overbay — but barely!)

I would doubt they’d carry a 3rd catcher for a single game….

You can be the hotter team, you can be the BETTER team by 10-plus games (the Braves are currently 5-plus ahead of the Cardinals), and all of that is rendered moot by the outcome of a single wildcard playoff game. They win and they go on, they lose and the season is over…so much for the better effort up to that point (not to mention any hope of Chipper Jones being able to bookend his career with World Series championships). There’s no question that I’d feel more comfortable with the Braves being able to win the division and bypass this sorry excuse for a “round”. The extra wildcard team and especially the one-game playoff are two of the stupidest things ever done by MLB, and I can’t hope enough that both ideas get scrapped as soon as humanly possible.

It’s exceedingly rare for a team with a negative run differential to make the playoffs. In fact, just five have done so: the 1984 Royals (-13), 1987 Twins (-20), 1997 Giants (-9), 2005 Padres (-44) and 2007 Diamondbacks (-20). The Twins, who went 85-77, are the only one of those teams to win the World Series, with the Diamondbacks the only other team in that group to win a postseason series;

Regarding the parking issue on Friday,

The way we always do it for a big game is to park in a private lot off Ralph David Abernathy blvd and Central Ave (Google map it). Easiest way is to get off from southbound I75/85 at Fulton St and go right (away from the stadium) where everyone else is going left, then turn left at the bottom of the hill. Go straight to RDA blvd and turn left. You will quickly see private parking opportunities on both sides

There is a barrier in RDA but it has a gap where you can U-turn and then park at a lot at the corner of Central Avenue. This is the perfect lot because after the game, with a massive crush of cars everywhere else, all you do is turn right on Central Avenue, then you will have several chances to get back on Interstate 75/85 North (assuming you need to go north) – by turning right on Ellis or on John Wesley Dobbs. If you miss those, you will end up on Peachtree Street, from which you will have still another chance to turn onto I-85 later.

The roughest part of the season was May into June. The Braves lost eight games in a row, the eighth coming on Memorial Day. Two weeks later, they were swept at home by the Yankees, and the clamor over Gonzalez’s handling of the eighth inning of Game 2 — the Braves had taken a 4-0 lead behind Minor, but Alex Rodriguez hit a tying grand slam off Venters and Nick Swisher hoisted the game-winner off Cory Gearrin — was deafening on AJC.com blogs.

Over the next few days, this correspondent asked four men whose salaries are paid by the Braves if Gonzalez was in any trouble. All four of the men were surprised by the question. They felt he had the respect of his players, and they believed those players would continue to play hard for him. (The consensus of the four, just so you know, was that Gonzalez had not totally bungled that eighth inning.) And that, at the big-league level, is more than half the managerial battle.

Had they been working under a man they despised, a man given to hurling invective and furniture after losses, the Braves would have gone belly-up three months ago. They stayed the course, and — please pardon the Chipper-like mixing of metaphors — and Fredi Gonzalez steered the ship. Maybe he doesn’t bunt enough for your liking, or maybe he bunts too much, but this is a good manager who has done fine work.
